In their conversation Kevin gives us a little bit of his history and then Stephen joins and we discuss the “Sky Chiefs” debut album and how it was recorded and produce 36 years ago and the Personel on the album and they take us through the musical styles on the album. Stephen tells us about his time in California playing with the Long Ryders The two tell us how they met while Kevin was in a band called “the Dads” and moved from LA to back to Richmond, VA. Stephen talks about his main guitar a tele style guitar with a b-bender “string bender” installed by Gene Parsons, the inventor of the string bender Gene is interviewed in episode 117 of this podcast. The two both tell us about the gear not just for the album but also what they're using now. Stephen discusses seeing Danny Gatton play many times early on. The two describe the few shows they did 36 years ago and they talk about plans for shows upcoming and discuss the support they're receiving from Sirius/XM's Outlaw Country. Stuart Young, Program Manager, Tactical Technology Office, DARPA joined Grayson Brulte on The Road to Autonomy podcast to discuss DARPA's RACER (Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency) Program and the development of high-speed autonomous vehicles capable of navigating unstructured off-road terrain without maps or GPS.The operational backbone of this program is a departure from the breadcrumb approach of the Grand Challenge, challenging robots to navigate complex, unstructured environments at speeds faster than manned formations. By removing the dependency on pre-existing maps and GPS, DARPA is forcing the autonomous systems to generalize across environments.In the field, RACER has rigorously tested platforms ranging from modified Polaris RZRs to Textron M5 tracked vehicles across diverse landscapes, including the Mojave Desert, Camp Roberts, and Fort Hood. 247 - Philip Shouse (Solo, the Rock and Roll Residency, Accept, Ace Frehley, Gene Simmons) In episode 247 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with Philip Shouse, who has a solo EP called “Side 1” out and is currently a member of Accept he also is a part the Rock and Roll Residency and has been a part of both Gene Simmons and Ace Frehley”s solo bands. Much like the “big, beautiful bill” language we've all heard tossed around in political discourse, design's buzzwords can distract from what actually matters. They generate attention, not meaning. They look good on social media, not necessarily in the lived experience of a home, workplace, or public square. So instead of centering our design conversations around fleeting edits, let's pivot toward the global innovations that are transforming the built world in ways that truly matter. Rethinking the Shelter Space For years I described architecture as a language, design as a dialect, and landscape as the narrative. Mies van der Rohe famously introduced the concept of architecture as language. It caught on, and then the bandwagon effect took over. But today, the metaphor feels insufficient—especially for the shelter space, where people spend their lives, raise families, work, heal, and age. The shelter space isn't like a retail store or restaurant, where design is often intended for those who pass through briefly while the people who labor there navigate the leftover space. But these questions don't define design. They only outline it. There is no universal purpose of architecture or design, no single philosophy, no singular “right” answer. The shelter space varies as widely as the people living within it. So instead of treating architecture and design as technical processes, we should approach them philosophically. A Philosophical Framework for Design Stoicism offers clarity: Accept that budget overruns and changes will occur. Respect the expertise of the designer you hired. Invest in authenticity rather than dupes. Create environments that support health—clean air, clean water, noise reduction, resilience. Utilitarianism reminds us that choices have consequences. 239 - Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon239 - Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon In episode 239 of “Have Guitar Will Travel”, presented by Vintage Guitar Magazine, host James Patrick Regan speaks with singer/songwriters and guitarists Tom Paxton and John McCutcheon who is also a multi-instrumentalist. He first spoke to John in episode 150. In their conversation he starts with Tom and he tells us about his home in Alexandria, VA, right across the river from Washington, DC and he tells us about starting on trumpet before starting on guitar as a senior in high school. The two tells us about when they first met in Boston in the early '80's and how they came together as songwriting partners during Covid. John describes recording their album “Together Again” in the same room with the exception of Stuart Duncan on fiddle. “Together Again” being their second collaboration after their first “Together”. John discusses his instruments on the album an Ome banjo and Huss and Dalton guitars and Tom tells us about his Martin M-38 he has at home. Tom talks about why he retired from touring and John tells us about his upcoming tour plans and the two tell us about their writing projects. The two discuss their holiday traditions, Tom renting a Virginia ski cabin and John with a huge Cuban Christmas Eve feast and the two have a traditional of writing unconventional Christmas songs.
