In 1716 two princes from Mpfumo—what is today Maputo, the capital of Mozambique—boarded a ship licensed by the East India Company bound for England. Instead, their perfidious captain sold them into slavery in Jamaica. After two years of pleading their case, the princes—known in the historical record as Prince James and Prince John—convinced a lawyer to purchase them, free them, and travel with them to London. The lawyer perished when a hurricane wrecked their ship, but the princes survived and arrived in England in 1720. Even though the East India Company had initially thought that the princes might assist in their aspirations to develop a trade for gold in East Africa and for enslaved labor in Madagascar, its interest waned. The princes would need to look elsewhere to return home. It was at this point that members of the Royal African Company and the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge took up their cause, in the hope that profit and perhaps Christian souls would follow. John would make it home, but tragically, James would end his own life just before the ship sailed for Africa. In The Two Princes of Mpfumo: An Early Eighteenth-Century Journey into and out of Slavery (University of Pennsylvania Press, 2025), Dr. Lindsay O'Neill brings to life individuals caught up in the eighteenth-century slave trade. Dr. O'Neill also shows how the princes' experiences reflect the fragmented, chaotic, and often deadly realities of the early British empire. A fascinating and deeply researched historical narrative, The Two Princes of Mpfumo blurs the boundaries between the Atlantic and Indian ocean worlds; reveals the intertwined networks, powerful individuals, and unstable knowledge that guided British attempts at imperial expansion; and illuminates the power of African polities, which decided who lived and who died on their coasts. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. It's something no one has ever seen before. Pastor Ray Bentley helps us wrap our minds around the spectacle of the rapture. Can you imagine what would the world be like if every true believer in Jesus Christ suddenly were gone from the earth? All those Christians, every conviction, all of it gone. What do you think will happen to the world in a week?
How to be on guard against our spiritual adversary. Satan has a mission, and his real mission is not to create weird, spooky movies and goblins to terrorize people. He'll use that for those that will fall for that or be intimidated by it. But he is at his best.

Jim Ryan's tenure leading PlayStation is officially over (as is Hiroki Totoki's stewardship), and he'll be replaced by a co-CEO format moving forward. Sony veterans Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nashino hope to divide and conquer, turning an ever-growing brand -- and Sony's flagship -- into an efficient gaming powerhouse. But can they deliver? Good question. We discuss. Other news this week revolves around Sony's jam-packed fiscal year financials, Square Enix's abandonment of their by-platform strategy, release dates and timing for the likes of Grand Theft Auto VI, Assassin's Creed: Shadows, and EA NCAA Football 25, a rumored LEGO Horizon game, the cancellation of The Division: Heartland, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Could Helldivers be turned into a mockumentary-style TV show? Would Sony consider stepping in to save Tango Gameworks? Are Chris and Dustin excited about Destiny 2's upcoming The Final Shape expansion? Will we ever stop unintentionally convincing audience members to get divorced? Today on The Odder, we are talking about Edward the 5th and Richard of Shrewsbury, what happened to them and if it was murder, who did it? I hope you paid attention during history class cause we are going to be doing some grave digging today, grab your lockpick and your shovel and let's go!Want to request your own personalized episode? In this week's episode, Danielle talks about the infamous Yoga Twins. They were aspiring reality stares, known for being flashy co-owners of yoga studios. They were inseparable and even sported matching Porches. But, their relationship was co-dependent and toxic. They were also known for their explosive arguments which often turned into physical altercations. So when the twins drove off a cliff in Hawaii, was it intentional or an accident? Then, Sandra talks about the Two Princes in the Tower. Back in England in the 1480's two young princes were the next in line to the throne. They were sent to the Tower of London where they disappeared. According to historians the two princes may have been murdered by their Uncle Richard III who ascended the throne after their disappearance. Today people who visit the Tower of London have reported seeing two little boys wearing nightshirts and holding hands. They frequently are seen in the White Tower and have also been seen playing on the battlements. Some visitors have even reported hearing children giggling.
