The '90s were a strange time. From Gregorian chants to swing bands, you never knew what would make it onto the radio. But some of the strangest groups to improbably infiltrate the mainstream came from the post-Grateful Dead jam band scene. Our guest today is Mike Ayers, author of Sharing in the Groove: The Untold Story of the '90s Jam Band Explosion and the Scene that Followed. The book, an oral history, is really a blast. It covers all the big players of the era: Phish, Blues Traveler, Spin Doctors, Widespread Panic, Dave Matthews Band, but Ayers takes it to the next level by expanding the definition of "jam band" to include Medeski, Martin and Wood, Greyboy and the acid jazz scene, New Orleans funk band Galactic, and John Zorn and the Knitting Factory downtown NYC scene, and much more. This episode, guest host (and Transmissions audio editor) Andrew Horton, Jason P. Woodbury, and Ayers sit down to hash out the era in which even Sonic Youth and Yo La Tengo embraced their jammiest free improv tendencies. What are the limits of the whole "jam band" thing really? Come along with us as we dig into Sharing in the Groove. Transmissions is created in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. We're brought to you by Aquarium Drunkard, an independent music media crew headed by Justin Gage. Over at Aquarium Drunkard, you'll gain access to 20 years of music writing, playlist, essays, mixtapes, radio special, podcasts, videos and more.
This week we're talking about an album that attempted to ruin the harmonica for an entire generation. A band that is simultaneously so talented, repetitive, and even at times boring that it defies all logic. We are of course talking about Blues Traveler and their album Four, released September 13, 1994. In this episode we discuss what season we are currently in, heated debate about what a hepcat is, David Letterman's obsession with drums, how many harmonica solos are too many, Tim's terrible hobbies, falling for traveling clowns, fighting a shark, how to pull a prank live on the podcast and so much more! This week, I'm hanging out with Jaret Reddick, the lead singer, guitarist, and all-around creative engine behind Bowling For Soup, as he looks back on three decades of pop-punk chaos, catchy hooks, and perfectly timed humor. We get into how the band balances goofy songs with genuine heartfelt moments, why “Belgium” keeps reinventing itself, and how BFS ended up becoming a Radio Disney staple. Jaret talks about the band's wide-ranging covers—from Miley Cyrus to Hanson to Taylor Swift—our shared love of power ballads (including his personal top three), and how he wound up becoming the voice of Chuck E. Cheese. We also dig into the impact of the band's Grammy nomination, collaborations with Blues Traveler, The Dollyrots, and Bret Michaels of Poison, the long-running “Stacy's Mom” misconception, and the real story behind “1985,” SR-71, and Butch Walker. Jaret also breaks down what it was like writing a song for Alexa Bliss and teaming up with WWE for the music video. Whether you've been blasting BFS since the '90s (when they had horns) or you're discovering their world for the first time, this episode delivers laughs, nostalgia, and a glimpse at what's next for the band in 2026 and beyond!

Journey back to the summer of 1970 as we explore the legendary Isle of Wight Festival, where music lovers converged on a small island off England's southern coast for five days of extraordinary performances. What makes this festival particularly special is how well it was documented – allowing us to experience these historic performances through recordings and film footage decades later. From Chicago's early hits to The Who's powerful performance of "Tommy," the festival showcased artists at pivotal moments in their careers. Jim Morrison's haunting performance with The Doors stands as one of his final shows. Meanwhile, Miles Davis demonstrated how jazz could captivate rock audiences, and Jimi Hendrix delivered unforgettable performances just weeks before his death. We'll also transport you to the 1995 HORDE Festival in Atlanta, a touring concert series that helped bands like The Black Crowes and Blues Traveler reach larger audiences by combining their fan bases. Along the way, we explore summer hits that defined their eras – from KC and the Sunshine Band's disco anthem "Get Down Tonight" to The Kings' double-hit "This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide." We'll also examine how The Cure's 1985 album "Head on the Door" marked their transition to mainstream success with its distinctive sound. These weren't just concerts – they were cultural touchstones that helped define musical movements and create the shared experiences that bind music fans together. Join us as we celebrate the festivals, songs, and albums that shaped rock history and continue to influence how we experience music today.“Music In My Shoes" where music and memories intertwine.Learn Something New orRemember Something OldVisit our Facebook and Instagram pages and spread the word if you enjoy the podcast.
