The husband-and-wife duo from South Carolina specialize in rootsy, bluesy rock, Americana, and alt-country, but they don't confine themselves to traditional two-piece arrangements. They switch off on vocal, guitar, percussion, and synth duty throughout their shows, orchestrating a full-band ruckus with all available limbs.Their seventh full-length, Something Is Working Up Above My Head, released in September last year, and while touring in support of it, they stopped at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl in late February. Happy holidays. With Gemini celebrating in the Southern Hemisphere, and Las Vegas in holiday mode, Al and Rich avoided the temptation to take a week off, and put in just enough effort to create an abbreviated episode. But it's still packed with good stuff – especially if you're a fan of Michael Mina. Al talked to Mina just hours before the new Bourbon Steak in the Four Seasons resort opened its doors to the public. But before we even get to that, Al will tell you about his experience getting bites in the Bourbon Steak lounge. Other restaurant reports this week include visits to William B's in the Suncoast, Brooklyn Bowl, New York Bagel and Bakery, and The George Sportsmen's Lounge. And Al drops by The Gambler pop-up at Amari, and speaks to Mina Group veteran Chef Adam Sobel and Amari GM Jason Rocheleau.

This week for What Where When-sday, we discuss Blue June Music Fest with John Vincent III. Happening at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday, the touring one-day music fest will highlight folk, Americana, roots and country through local and non-local artists from Cece Coakley, Kara Jackson, and Vincent himself. He joined us to talk about how the event came together.
I never thought I'd have a live event, and I certainly never thought I'd have to cancel one. My sincerest apologies. And I couldn't figure out how else to spread the word except like this. I'm not a fan of Eventbrite events where you RSVP but the RSVP doesn't really get you anything, so I didn't do one. Now I wish I did. You can't upload a podcast episode without audio, so please enjoy my favorite Jack Straw ever: 7/24/87 JS only got longer, more fun, dirtier, and-- I'd argue-- better as time went on (up until 1990, of course). Here we are with Rachel Rose. Connecticut-born, Austin-launched, and Brooklyn-based indie folk/rock singer/songwriter Rachel Rose, known for her rich, nostalgic sound blending soul, folk, rock, and pop. Her debut EP "100/10/1" dropped in 2020, followed by the second EP "And One More Thing," produced by Charles Myers. Collaborations with industry heavyweights like John Alagia and Tyler Chester underscore her rising prominence. With sold-out shows at Rockwood Music Hall and Babys All Right, Rachel's career soared when she opened the Hootenanny Sessions at Cafe Wha? post a 50-year hiatus. A recent 3-month residency at The Bitter End and a slot as a featured artist at SXSW 2024 cement her status. She's shared stages with Juliet Ivy, Theo Kandel, and more, even gracing The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Her original track "Back To The Beginning" made waves, landing in NPR Tiny Desk's Top Shelf Segment. Rachel's brand partnerships, including AEA Microphones and Virgin Hotels, showcase her versatility, while her performance of the national anthem at a Rangers MSG game underscored her impact beyond music. We will get to hear about one of the biggest risks--quitting her full-time job to pursue a full-time career in music. She will be performing at the Brooklyn Bowl on May 9th.

American Songwriter writes that the Asheville, NC based group, “filters 60's/70's psychedelia and 90's alternative rock through a modern lens–as if Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and Nirvana co-wrote an album produced by Danger Mouse and Dan Auerbach.” The Get Right Band formed in 2011, built around the musical brotherhood that guitarist/singer/songwriter Silas Durocher and bassist Jesse Gentry have formed playing music together since middle school (25 years!). Durocher, who is a trained composer and has been commissioned to write for symphonies and chamber groups, has guitar chops that can soothe or rage, with a charismatic swagger as frontman and singer. Gentry's virtuosic bass playing “catapults from elastic to nasty” (The Mountain Xpress). Over the years, GRB has defined their sound through constant evolution, building to the hook-driven, synth-heavy pop/rock/psych band they are today. The Huffington Post writes, “their songs are infectious and take you immediately to a place. The lyrics are smart and bear weight.” “The Get Right Band are the type of performers that you just know will break out. Their songs are infectious and take you immediately to a place. They have released four studio albums and a live album, and their latest LP, iTopia, dropped on April 7, 2023. Based in the sprawling Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, The Sleeping Cliffs is a solo studio project from multi-instrumentalist Todd Glidewell. Combining elements of indietronica, post-rock, alternative, funk, jazz-fusion and ambient electronica, The Sleeping Cliffs produce emotive, cinematic, instrumental songs. Though not boxed in by any one genre, the songs share an undertow of gritty bass lines, layers of guitar, and big rock drums.

From then on, he's been roaring around the world, bringing his mix of downhome Delta-informed blues and sophisticated turns incorporating funk licks, Hendrix fantasias, jazz runs, and inspired improvisation to club and festival audiences. Late last year, he was a guest performer at BMI's Troubadour Awards presentation for fan Billy Gibbons. His second album, 662, named after his hometown's area code, also topped the blues chart and won him a Grammy. The lyrics are smart and bear weight.” – The Huffington Post The Get Right Band has shared the stage with Dr. Dog, Everclear, Cracker, UB40, Rusted Root, Smash Mouth, and Lifehouse; been featured on NPR's World Cafe, Paste Studio, and WTF with Marc Maron; and performed at major venues and festivals including The Fillmore, Brooklyn Bowl, Theatre of the Living Arts, The Orange Peel, FloydFest, Bristol Rhythm & Roots, and Riverbend Fest. They have released four studio albums and a live album, and their latest LP, iTopia, dropped on April 7, 2023. Stress Dolls is the moniker of Chelsea O'Donnell, a songwriter from Buffalo, NY. She writes songs inspired by life experiences, ranging from dealing with chronic illness, to learning to live with anxiety, and even a few love songs thrown in for good measure. Currently, Stress Dolls takes on several forms live: solo with O'Donnell and her acoustic guitar; as a duo when joined by longtime collaborator Sally Schaefer on violin; or as a band when combined with members TJ Luckman (bass), Jordan Smith (lead guitar), and Josh English (drums). The project's sound has drawn such comparisons as "Joni Mitchell meets Nirvana," "Avril Lavigne and Foo Fighters in a blender," and "Kathleen Hanna fronting Modest Mouse."
“Gear is meant to be destroyed in the line of duty,” laughs Ruban Nielson. “I realize I prefer to see my equipment all dinged up rather than sitting perfect in my basement—that's a dorky thing to do.”That doesn't mean Nielson doesn't care about his sound. He noted in a 2015 interview with PG that he spends countless hours in his basement tinkering on breadboard circuits and swapping out components, trying to maximize a pedal for his needs. “I like the idea that instead of buying your sound, you're building your sound,” he said.Over the course of 14 years, five albums, and thousands of touring miles, Nielsen has been custom-fabricating his guitar voice. But as we all know, the quest is never-ending, like trying to catch the horizon. After all, isn't it the journey, not the destination, that matters?“I used to be too much of a savage to care about a clean boost or headroom,” says Nielson. “‘Just give me a distortion pedal already!' But now I'm exploring the intricacies, subtleties, and nuances of guitar.”Ahead of Unknown Mortal Orchestra's headlining performance at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, Ruban Nielson welcomed PG's Chris Kies onstage to explore his current sonic lab. Nielson covers his two space-age guitars (and what inspired them), explains how he convinced Benson to put a Monarch inside a vintage solid-state Yamaha, and details the pedals—including a few of his own designs—that extract a kaleidoscope of moods.Brought to you by D'Addario.
"I feel strange when I talk to a lot of people around my age sometimes because they are getting out of college, and they still don't know what it is they want to do. The 15-year history of Rig Rundown has established that guitar gear fascination (and obsession) runs deep in our community. It's the life blood of our show. But if there was ever antithetical example to guitar gluttony and equipment idolatry, it would be American Football. Their original self-proclaimed “bedroom college project” focused on self-expression, musical creativity, and working with what you had, which wasn't much. For the recording of their pioneering American Football album released in 1999, they borrowed most of their gear, shared a single guitar cable and tuner, didn't use bass, and formulated odd open tunings that allowed for sinuously melodic cinematic passages between Kinsella and Holmes. Their exploration of unique open tunings inspire a legion of players include 6-string virtuoso Yvette Young. (She now ships all her signature Ibanez guitars in a tricky open tuning—F–A–C–G–B–E—derived from American Football.) Their ingenious and scrappy methods went on to inform the brand of Midwest emo that simmered a devoted fanbase waiting for their return after disbanding in 2000. First returning to the stage in 2014 and delivering two more American Football albums in 2016 and 2019, the band continues using minimal gear for maximum art.Ahead of American Football's headlining show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl, cofounding members Mike Kinsella (vocals/guitar) and Steve Holmes (guitar) invited PG's Perry Bean onstage for a refreshingly practical gear chat. Kinsella recalls the band's basic beginnings and explains how he starts every American Football demo. Then, Holmes shows off his “gorgeous and favorite” Tele. Plus, we encounter a Rig Rundown first where the tech has veto power over setlists.Brought to you by D'Addario Trigger Capo.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Boy Named Banjo over Zoom video!Boy Named Banjo has announced their major label debut album Dusk, due out September 29 via Mercury Records Nashville. On Dusk, the Nashville-native group explores the full emotional spectrum of the rich, eclectic sound they've honed over the last decade. Along with the announcement, the band also shares their wistful new single “Lonely In This Town."Produced by longtime collaborator Oscar Charles (Caroline Spence, Charlie Worsham), Dusk is an electrifying dose of lightning in a bottle over its nine tracks, running a gamut of late-night, fall-in-love party anthems and stripped-down meditations. Boy Named Banjo's songwriting is as incisive as ever, artfully grappling with lust and longing, hope and heartbreak. Sonically, the band's performances on the record are nothing short of exhilarating, blurring the lines between Music Row and Laurel Canyon with lush harmonies and bold cinematic arrangements. The end result is a masterfully crafted, larger-than-life major label debut from a group that continues to grow by leaps and bounds with every release.Widely beloved by loyal fans nationwide for their high-octane live shows, Boy Named Banjo will kick off their coast-to-coast Dusk Til Dawn Tour next month on September 14 in Atlanta – tickets can be found here and a full list of dates can be found below. Audiences will be treated to performances from their extensive catalog and new music from Dusk, in addition to their recent uplifting anthem “What Keeps Me Going” which earned praise from CMT, Holler, Taste of Country, Whiskey Riff and more. 2023 has already shaped up to be another banner year for the band following their Grand Ole Opry debut, a momentous milestone that was documented at People.Expertly melding an array of musical influences, the five-piece band is a fusion of contemporary country, Americana and folk-rock stacked on a foundation of bluegrass. Their self-released 2012 debut The Tanglewood Sessions helped earn the band a spot at Bonnaroo, while their 2014 follow-up, Long Story Short, led to festival slots everywhere from Hangout Fest to Dierks Bentley's Seven Peaks. After signing with Mercury Records Nashville in 2020, the following year saw the release of their genre-defying EP Circles, which landed them a performance at the historic Ryman Auditorium alongside dates supporting the likes of Kip Moore, Hank Williams, Jr., Old Crow Medicine Show, and The Cadillac Three. In 2022, Boy Named Banjo made their CMA Fest debut playing at the Ascend Amphitheatre Nighttime Concert as well as a sold-out hometown show at Nashville's Brooklyn Bowl. Formed in their teens, Boy Named Banjo includes Barton Davies (banjo), Ford Garrard (bass/standing bass), Sam McCullough (drums) Willard Logan (mandolin, acoustic/electric guitar) and William Reames (acoustic guitar/harmonica).We want to hear from you! Hi everybody and welcome to this week's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is entertainment writer and contributing editor, Jordan Hoffman. I first became of Jordan through his twitter feed, and we tried for a while to set up a show and a date to record. After a while, Jordan chose what is, at the time of this recording, chose the second live performance NOT from Phish. But as we discuss early in the episode, it is Phish-adjacent: today we're talking about TAB–the Trey Anastasio Band–and their show from April 29, 2019 at Brooklyn Bowl in Williamsburg. When Jordan and I began speaking, his enthusiasm and excitement to tell his story about this show was immediately apparent. Normally, I like to think of myself as being pretty quick on my feet when discussing Phish, and although TAB is just one degree of separation, there have been so many iterations of the band and so many songs I don't know that I had to let Jordan take the wheel for much of the conversation. And man, I am so glad that was the case. Jordan takes us on an emotional and always entertaining journey about how he found his way through trauma and hope to end up just a few rows back from one of his favorite bands at the legendary New York City club.So let's join Jordan to talk about They Live, Peaches en Regalia, and Bonnie Raitt as we discuss the Trey Anastasio Band's show from April 29, 2019 at Brooklyn Bowl.
We are so stoked to have our brother Will Hanza of Escaper back on No Simple Road this week! Escaper was formed in 2015 by Will Hanza (guitar, vocals) as a musical collective that pushed creative freedom. Joined in 2017 by Phil Kadet (keys, vocal), the band has become known for fun and fiery sets throughout northeast venues and music festivals. The band has welcomed sit-ins with members of bands such as the Disco Biscuits, Brazilian Girls, Thievery Corporation, Rubblebucket, Dopapod, Cabinet, Turkuaz and more. They have previously shared bills at Brooklyn Bowl with Jon Fishman (Phish), Karl Denson, and many other top performers. After a hiatus during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been joined by drummer Sam Crespo and bassist Luke Bemand.
