On this episode of Great Practice, Great Life, Steve sits down with Chris Barron, the inspiring lead singer of the Spin Doctors, for a deep dive into his incredible journey—one marked by relentless resilience, reinvention, and raw determination. Chris shares his story of overcoming a tough childhood, dyslexia, vocal paralysis, and the heartbreaking loss of his brother—all while forging a legendary career in music. His secret? A relentless work ethic, a sharp mind, and a unique approach to handling setbacks. He embraces what he calls “guided moping,” allowing himself time to process challenges before shifting into creative problem-solving mode. From the Spin Doctors' early days recording on a Tascam four-track cassette to crafting hits like “Little Miss Can't Be Wrong,” Chris has always turned adversity into art—something most business owners can relate to. He shares his unique analogy of running the band like a pirate ship, emphasizing the power of collaboration and teamwork. He also offers insights into how musicians, much like lawyers, find success when they align their personal aspirations with the broader goals of their team. But Chris isn't just about music, his insatiable curiosity fuels everything he does. Twice facing vocal paralysis, he adapted with resilience and ingenuity, proving that persistence beats the odds. Whether it's photography, chess, or studying ancient Greek, he's constantly evolving, refusing to be defined by his struggles. No matter your path—music, law, or any dream worth chasing—Chris's story is a testament to how hard work, heart, and resilience can shape a lasting legacy. Season 07 Episode 11: From ‘Command & Control' to ‘Customer Service' – Beyond ‘hazard salad' in psychosocial risk management. The team revel in debate about the new Queensland state and Commonwealth government literature on psychosocial risk management. Sara is relieved to see updates to regulations on psychosocial risks (Work Health and Safety [Psychosocial Risks] Amendment Regulation 2022) because of their focus on work design. Trajce explains aspects of The Commonwealth Code of Practice: Managing Psychosocial Hazards at Work (Dec 2023) which includes “intrusive surveillance” as a psychosocial hazard, requiring employer risk management and interventions. The team reference Season 01 Episode 05: Kozorov and The Need for Purpose – an episode devoted to discussions on vicarious trauma in the workplace.Much to Alan's amusement, Sara reveals her anthem song, “Little Miss Can't Be Wrong,” by the Spin Doctors, while lamenting common central office approaches to operate like ‘command and control centres.' “That might work in times of conscription,” she says, “but it fails to incorporate service design to recognise employees as internal customers to the work experience.” She references Dart Lindsey in his view of “Work as a Product,” an idea populated in his recent Harvard Business Review publication.

The Trinity Debate: Is It Better to Be a Heretic Than to Be Wrong? The interplay between faith and reason is a dynamic and ongoing conversation within religious circles. Throughout history, believers have grappled with reconciling their spiritual convictions with the demands of rational inquiry. This dialogue is particularly evident in discussions surrounding the nature of God, the interpretation of sacred texts, and the compatibility of religious beliefs with scientific discoveries. Some argue that faith and reason are inherently at odds, each demanding exclusive allegiance from adherents. Others contend that they are complementary, each offering unique insights into the mysteries of existence. This latter perspective encourages a holistic approach to understanding, where faith provides meaning and purpose, while reason offers clarity and precision. By engaging with both dimensions, individuals can cultivate a more robust and resilient spirituality, capable of navigating the complexities of modern life. This synthesis invites believers to embrace curiosity and critical thinking, fostering a spirit of exploration and discovery that enriches their faith journey. Ultimately, the integration of faith and reason reflects a commitment to seeking truth, wherever it may be found, and honoring the diverse ways in which humans experience the divine. #PriesthoodBelievers #AnotherJesusWorship #RestoredGospelAnswers #MissionaryToolsAtheists #NoAuthorityNeeded #BibleTeachings #GodCreatorEvil --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wardradio/support

GOING SOLO: Everything You Need to Start Your Business and Succeed as Your Own Boss, with Jean-Benoît Nadeau, drawing on the couple's three decades of experience as freelance writers. Born in Sherbrooke, Quebec, and a political science graduate of McGill University, Jean-Benoît Nadeau once held a job for 29 days and has been self-employed for 35 years. A regular reporter and columnist for L'actualité (Canada's leading national French magazine), he has also been a past contributor to the Report on Business Magazine. He has signed papers for various American, Canadian, and French publications. His freelancer status has allowed him to live in various venues like Phoenix, Toronto, Paris, and Montreal and undertake radio, film, and book projects, some of which with his spouse and partner Julie Barlow. They currently work as journalists based in Canada. He also published "The Story of French," "The Story of Spanish," and "The Bonjour Effect: The Secret Codes of French Conversation Revealed. " Their books have been translated into French, Dutch, Mandarin, and Japanese. Check out the latest episode of our Conversational Selling podcast to learn more about Julie and Jean-Benoît.In this episode, Nancy, Julie, and Jean discuss the following:Writers' transition from a creative role to the business aspectThe key messages in "Going Solo"Working more hours vs. thinking differentlyThe importance of understanding the client's expectations and needsThe value of negotiating on multiple levels simultaneouslyThe significance of saying "no" as a critical term in negotiationsConstructive refusal tips: polite ways to decline offersKey Takeaways:I'm a writer and a creator, but I'm also a business person, and I realized that I was the hierarchical equal of my client. You won't earn more if you work more; you'll earn more if you think things differently. The important thing that you do when you want to go solo is to understand your purpose and to love what you want to do.You immediately have intellectual property whenever you write something definite and not a list."The book is really for anybody who wants to start a business. But we're working from experience and maybe addressing more people in the creative field. Mind you, starting a business is creative, period. And I think one of the issues probably applies to all entrepreneurs. You know, you want to do something, be self-employed, and work from your passion. And then you very quickly must understand that it's a business. And it's hard for people to switch from being passionate about something to being business-like. And so, the book takes everybody through from the very beginning, writing your business plan through negotiation and operations and management and all the things you need to understand to make your passion make a living for you." – JULIE"It depends on whom you sell. Sometimes, the market that you have is very small. In effect, when we're magazine writers like us, we sell to about five or six publications. A lot of people publish these publications. But the person we must convince, the gatekeeper, is the editor-in-chief. And so, in that case, convincing them is putting together what we call the ingredients of a good idea, what's in it for them, what's so special about it. Sometimes, we have clients who are completely unknown to us. Some people want us to write a book on them. And so, in that case, most of the selling is just teaching the person how our business works because they have no clue. And if we do a good job there, we will have a client that will understand better where they will evolve." – JEAN"The book is about communication, particularly understanding your client's expectations and needs. So, for instance, we have people who want writing projects who don't really understand what involved the time and the work and what is involved in putting together some writing. So, part of our job is finding out how much they understand. And it's important to do that work sort of upstream from signing a contract with somebody and because it's all going to figure into how much you charge for it." – JULIE"I would say that you will quickly be busy once you have your business going. A very important thing is figuring out your purpose. Julie alluded to that. But you know, if you start a school for social dancing, you're not going to make all the hundreds of little decisions, whether your purpose is to start a franchise of school dancing or have your clients win the Olympics of social dancing or create a shoe for social dancing. You will not choose your clients in the same way as your venue, and you won't publicize in the same way. So, the idea of having a purpose, which is what you are doing this for, is very important. It's the essence of a business plan, which is not a 200-page document but a really, really a document about yourself. And knowing thyself better is the old Socrates motto, really applies to self-employed people." – JEANConnect with Julie Barlow and Jean-Benoît Nadeau:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/juliebarlow/LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jean-benoit-nadeau/Website: https://nadeaubarlow.com/Try Our Proven, 3-Step System, Guaranteeing Accountability and Transparency that Drives RESULTS by clicking on this link: https://oneofakindsales.com/call-center-in-a-box/ Connect with Nancy Calabrese:Twitter:https://twitter.com/oneofakindsalesFacebook:https://www.facebook.com/One-Of-A-Kind-Sales-304978633264832/Website:https://oneofakindsales.comPhone: 908-879-2911LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ncalabrese/Email: leads@oneofakindsales.com

If you know any wonderful spiritual people, they likely got that way one correction at a time. It didn't happen in a POOF. They seriously considered the question, "What could I be doing better?" Consider these three steps:BE WRONG. If you hear the Voice of conviction, that is a good thing. Worse is the silence of indifference. This is what Fathers do for sons. The first step is the Holy Spirit crying out: "You can do better here"BE SOFT. Be willing to be corrected. Only you can do this. Put yourself before Him in subjection. It is for your good.BE BETTER. God wishes us to be holy; to bear more of a familial resemblance to Himself. Let's be trained in this way.Join God in this sanctification process by coming back tomorrow by getting an email from bewithme.us or Apple Podcasts or Spotify.

Gurdip and Bec join forces to gush over Bec's very first Elvis album, Elvis' Golden Records, Volume 2, aka 50 Million Elvis Fans Can't Be Wrong. Encapsulating singles released between 1957-1959, this iconic album captures the Elvis of the 50s at perhaps his very best, accompanied on many tracks by more members of the Nashville A-Team. For Song of the Week, Justin tags in for a brief discussion on the obscure song "The Titles Tell," recorded originally by Elvis' Memphis friend Barbara Pittman while under contract with Sam Phillips, but never released at the time and never done by any other artist - yet we have a home recording of Elvis singing a very credible version of it in Germany! Gurdip, interestingly enough, goes for another Germany home recording, picking "Oh Lonesome Me," the Don Gibson hit, of which Elvis' home version only first surfaced in 2018. We welcome guest speaker John W. Traphagan to our audio series. Today's presentation, Neoliberalism and the Quantification of Quality in Higher Education is based on his recently published FutureU commentary, So You Want to be a University Administrator? Professor Traphagan analyzes the ongoing infusion of metrics into all aspects of “measuring” quality in higher education. From course surveys to rubrics, the overarching approach is to quantify all aspects of higher ed around a simple equation: good metrics —> good optics —> marketing opportunities. Dr. J. W. Traphagan is an anthropologist and a Visiting Professor at the Center for International Education at Waseda University in Tokyo. He is also a Professor Emeritus in the Program in Human Dimensions of Organizations at the University of Texas at Austin. His research has appeared in numerous scientific journals. His most recent books on Japan include Cosmopolitan Rurality, Depopulation, and Entrepreneurial Ecosystems in 21st Century Japan (2020) and The Blood of Gutoku: A Jack Riddley Mystery in Japan (2021). His popular podcast series, How to Be Wrong, is available on the New Books Network. Joining Dr. Traphagan today is Forum host Rubén O. Martinez, professor emeritus of sociology and director emeritus of the Julian Samora Research Institute at Michigan State University, and FutureU's founder. George Styles a biochemist with broad-ranging interests, including critical thinking, philosophy, and science, offers commentary as a discussant. Dr. Style's podcast, The Socratic Method, is available on YouTube. Lewis (Terry) Dibble, a humanities professor at Indiana University Purdue University Columbus, offers comments. Frank Fear produced the program for FutureU on June 20, 2023. The cover graphic is courtesy of Curatti.

But I bet you regaled your sweetheart with quite the tale of indignation! Has How Not to Be Wrong been on your reading list for a while? Learn the key insights now. We're scratching the surface here. If you don't already have Jordan Ellenberg's popular book on science and mathematical thinking, order it here or get the audiobook for free on Amazon to learn the juicy details. Introduction Wouldn't you love to never be wrong? You're not alone, and it's hardly a surprise. In our work, relationships, and even our hobbies, we learn from a young age that being wrong is a mistake. Constant correct thinking is a concept that seems almost impossible, right? Wrong (ironically!). How Not to Be Wrong by Jordan Ellenberg discusses ways we can make life simpler by thinking mathematically. The book dives into the world of mathematics and explores its applications in everyday life. By looking at simple and complex decisions, Ellenberg reveals our mistaken beliefs that lead to common errors in our thinking. “Mathematics is the study of things that come out a certain way because there is no other way they could possibly be.” — Jordan Ellenberg About Jordan Ellenberg Jordan Ellenberg is a mathematician and author. He is a professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has written several books on math and its application in various fields. He received his Ph.D. in math from Harvard University in 1998 and has written for publications like The New York Times, The Washington Post, and Wired. How Not to Be Wrong is a popular book that explores the ways mathematical thinking can help us understand and solve everyday problems. StoryShot #1: Think in a Nonlinear Way Nonlinear thinking means thinking logically about what you can and cannot control. Consider the following statement: "Where you should go depends on where you are." This nonlinear way of thinking helps you develop the skill of critical thinking and be better equipped to avoid mistakes. Imagine yourself in a car at a crossroads. When the light turns green, you drive across the road directly in front of you, not diagonally to the opposite side. This is linear thinking. Thinking in a nonlinear way gives us freedom to make choices and move forward with our lives. It also prompts more questions, which leads to more answers. This allows us to acknowledge changes in our lives, even if we have no control over these changes. Linear regression is a statistical technique that looks for a linear relationship between two or more variables. For example, there is a statistic that shows that for every extra $10,000 someone earns, they are 3% more likely to vote Republican. Linear regression can help you understand how different factors influence an outcome and make predictions based on new data. However, to avoid reaching false conclusions, we must be aware that linear regression can't be used for every set of data and, if misused, produces misleading results. StoryShot #2: Understand That Math Is Part of Everything You Do StoryShot #3: Math Can Help You Win the Lottery StoryShot #4: Math Can Help Us Make Better Decisions StoryShot #5: Consider the Triumph in Mediocrity StoryShot #6: Public Opinion Doesn't Exist and Doesn't Matter Learn more about your ad choices. How much of your life do you attribute to luck? It's a discussion even our producer, Darrell, couldn't wait to weigh in on in this edition of Doing What Works! Here are your show notes…How Not to Be Wrong, by Jordan Ellenberg, is a book about the power of mathematical thinking.“I cleaned out my refrigerator and now I can switch careers.” ~ Someone told Gretchen Rubin that, and Gretchen knew exactly what she meant.Brooks Palmer suggests you move something to a different room to see it for what it is (probably clutter).“Leave equal time for action as reflection.” ~ That's from Dick Bolles.
School board races have become some of the most contentious elections of the 2022 midterms. These used to be mostly local affairs, with candidates typically raising less than $1,000 from friends and family. But now it’s not uncommon for big national political action committees to sink tens of thousands into a single race. It’s a trend that goes back more than a decade and has been supercharged by culture war issues and the pandemic. Today, we talk with Rebecca Jacobsen, a professor of education policy at Michigan State University, about the implications of outside money in school board elections for education policy and local democracy. In the News Fix, we’ll discuss what’s being done to address voter intimidation at the polls. Plus, two cryptocurrency giants are joining forces. Then, we’ll hear from a listener who wonders if the universe is sending us an Election Day message, and a mathematician who has thought a lot about “How Not to Be Wrong” answers the “Make Me Smart” question. Here’s everything we talked about today: “Conservative groups are spending big on school board races” from Marketplace National Super PACS are spending on local school board races from USA Today CZ’s Binance to Buy Rival FTX After Sam Bankman-Fried Faces Liquidity Crunch from Bloomberg “Justice Dept. dispatching Election Day monitors to 64 jurisdictions” from The Washington Post This hotline is ready to troubleshoot your voting related issues Next Up in the Night Sky: A Total Lunar Eclipse from The New York Times Meet the mathematician who answered this week’s “Make Me Smart” question We want to hear your answer to the “Make Me Smart” question. Is anyone so bad it is easier and happier when he/she is gone you ask? Well, the Spin Doctors believe so and from the opening line, they deliver all the reasons why. "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" is a masterfully written song wrapped with sarcasm paper and tied with hiliarious ribbon. Knowing the story of why frontman Chris Barron wrote this song makes it even better...not to mention his 2019 tweet about the amount of plays it has accumulated in 25+ years. We -we being you the listener and Tressa- find out something we did not know about Joey (shocking)! And now, Tressa is on a journey Joey advises her to not take. Plus, who would get Bob if the show ever causes a breakUP of the 30+ year friendship instead of the breakDOWN of our favorite songs? We discuss.
In 1992, New York City based rock 'n' roll band The Spin Doctors released their hit song "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" from their 1991 album Pocket Full of Kryptonite, which hit #17 on the pop charts.Virtually everyone at the time assumed the song was written about an ex-girlfriend of frontman and songwriter, Chris Barron. But 27 years later, Barron tweeted the truth; the song was written about his step-mom, who bullied him, told him he would never amount to anything and he would "die in a gutter."Well Barron use this abuse as fuel for his fire and wrote a song about her. Here's the tweet that went viral:"My stepmom told me I'd be a janitor [nothing wrong with that] and live in the basement of a school and play guitar for the rats. I wrote a song about her. It's called Little Miss Can't Be Wrong. It's been played on the radio three million time."To stay connected with Better Place Project and for updates and behind the scenes info, please follow us on social media:Website:https://www.betterplaceproject.org/Instagram: @BetterPlaceProj To follow Steve & Erin on Instagram:@SteveNorrisOfficial @ErinorrisFacebook: Facebook.com/BetterPlaceProjectPodcastTwitter: @BetterPlaceProjEmail: BetterPlaceProjectPodcast@gmail.com
Our Season 9 finale finds us in deep conversation with Spin Doctors frontman Chris Barron, as part of our loving coverage of 1991's firecracker album "Pocket Full of Kryptonite," an album we both dearly love. And the hits, oh the hits! From "Two Princes," "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong," and our favorite jukebox jam "Shinbone Alley/Hard to Exist," we'll squeeze the juice out of every delicious track. We'll get into our usual shenanigans and excited musings, and we'll talk with Chris about everything from his surprising vocal background to his feelings about playing second fiddle to Pearl Jam. It’s hard to start. It’s hard to finish. It’s hard to choose. Sometimes writers (especially those who have had to step back from a professional journalism job for family or other reasons) have all the ideas and in some sense, all the time to execute them, and the result isn’t wild productivity, but a frustrating spinning of wheels—because if everything is possible, how do you choose? What if you choose wrong? Everything looks like a shiny opportunity, but when you write the first few sentences, it turns out the shiny thing was just a gum wrapper. It blows, and it can go on for a long time (and even forever)—because when you’re used to externally imposed topic and deadlines, it’s hard to shift into creating your own—and putting in the time you need to finish them and turn them into something real. KJ talks to former CBC national reporter and occasional freelancer Alison Myers about harnessing your strengths and the way you work best to get things done instead of starting and stopping a million things. Here’s what Alison said in her email: Hello from Canada, the country that used to be known for being polite and apologetic but more recently seems to be inspiring people around the world to be horn-honking jerks. You have no idea how relieved I was to hear you both talk about writing for an audience on a recent show. I used to be a big deal radio reporter before I had kids so I’m used to writing and performing for the sake of other people (i.e., feedback). I always stacked it up to what must be the raging dissatisfaction of my massive ego, that evil thing I'm supposed to suppress. As cliché as this sounds, you guys made me feel like less of an a*****e for wanting people to read my words. I have ideas coming out the wazoo and can write well when I commit to it. My problem is it has no purpose (read: audience). I have 52 untitled documents open with half-written essays that I haven't finished because I don’t know where this is all going. They’re like a million bowls of soggy cereal waiting for someone to pour them down the train. There’s no structure, no roadmap and, most importantly, no one on the other end waiting to receive. Alison agreed to come on and talk through her version of Shiny Thing Syndrome (which manifests differently than the one Jennie Nash and I talk about here). There’s a LOT of useful stuff here about getting your writing habit started or restarted and how to get to where we all want to be—you know, butt in chair, head in game.Links from the podBecca Syme episode, her website, Clifton StrengthsGretchen Rubin episodeLaura VanderkamJess and I on the “not today, muse” episodeHugo Lindgrin, Be Wrong as Fast as You Can KJ on being on time George Saunders’ SubstackWriters and Lovers, Lily KingThe Menopause Manifesto, Dr Jen Gunter (read about her take on Goop here.)@allmyinklings on IG COMING JULY 1: It’s the #AmWriting Blueprint for a Book Challenge! 10 episodes, 10 guests, 10 weeks to you being ready to write your best novel, memoir or non-fiction book this fall.
