Step into the hazy swirl of distortion, pain, and beauty that is Siamese Dream, the breakthrough sophomore album from The Smashing Pumpkins. Released in 1993, this record solidified the Chicago band as one of the most important forces in the alternative rock explosion of the early '90s. Crafted under the intense perfectionism of frontman Billy Corgan, Siamese Dream was famously recorded under heavy emotional and psychological strain. With internal band tensions, Corgan’s battles with depression, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin’s drug issues, the album was nearly doomed before it began. But out of chaos came a sonic masterpiece. Produced by Butch Vig (who also produced Nevermind for Nirvana), Siamese Dream is both lush and brutal — blending dense guitar layering with orchestral elements and raw emotion. It opens with the thunderous “Cherub Rock”, a track that sets the tone with explosive drums and swirling fuzz. Other standouts include the beautifully melancholic “Disarm,” the shoegaze-tinged “Mayonaise,” the soaring “Today,” and the crushing “Silverfuck.” The album was a commercial and critical triumph, debuting at #10 on the Billboard 200 and eventually going 4× Platinum. Critics praised its intricate production, emotional intensity, and ambition. Today, we're revisiting our 2022 conversation with Roland Orzabal. ABOUT ROLAND ORZABAL AND TEARS FOR FEARS:Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith formed Tears for Fears in Bath, England, in 1981 and have gone on to sell 30 million albums worldwide. Their major breakthrough in the UK came in 1982 with the Top 5 single “Mad World” and the subsequent platinum-selling album The Hurting. They gained major steam in the US with their sophomore album Songs From the Big Chair, which included the hit singles “Everybody Wants to Rule the World,” “Shout,” and “Head Over Heels.” Featured in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Songs From the Big Chair reached #1 and was certified five times Platinum by the RIAA. Tears for Fears' follow-up single “Sowing the Seeds of Love” was another massive hit, but Curt departed the group not long after. On today's show we are looking at what is happening in precious metals and the narrative attached to these recent record setting prices.This past week gold has hit new all time record highs of just above $3800. Price peaked at $3820 an ounce, surging nearly $40 an ounce in the opening moments of trading on Monday morning. So far gold is up 10% in the last 30 days and up 41% in the past year. Of course the purists out there will probably argue that gold has not risen. It's the dollar that has fallen in reference to gold and that gold is the only true historic store of value.We are seeing similar moves in the other benchmark metals. Silver also hit 14 year highs this week above $47 per ounce as of the time of this recording. That is an increase of 20% for the month and 45% in the past year. It's a similar story for platinum and palladium. Platinum is up 18% for the past month and 58% for the past year. Palladium is up 17% in the past month and 27% in the past 12 months.We know that several things happen in an inflationary environment. Purchasing power for those on fixed income gets wiped out. Savings get wiped out and debt gets wiped out. We can also see asset prices rise unless we are talking about a Venezuelan style inflation where asset prices collapse due to a complete breakdown of the economy.So in an inflationary environment you don't want to be the one holding the debt. In fact the people at Morgan Stanley just updated their recommendation for a balanced portfolio. The traditional Wall Street version of the balanced portfolio has been 60% stocks and 40% bonds.
