Welcome to the inaugural episode of Season 6 of the Perspectivalist! Today, I'm joined by Mr. Jarrod Richey, Director of Music at Church of the Redeemer in West Monroe, Louisiana, and Academic Dean of the Redeemer School of the Arts. "I'm convinced they hate us," says Luke Richey, co-founder of Gravity Jack, referring to gaming giants like Roblox and Fortnite - companies he believes knowingly endanger children for profit. His wife and co-founder, Jennifer Richey, adds that 63% of human trafficking involving Gen A and Gen Z now originates through gaming platforms. In 2023 alone, Roblox reported over 13,000 child exploitation incidents - a figure they admit is likely just the tip of the iceberg.Maybe it's not hate, but indifference that leads kids to trafficking and suicide feels like total disregard for human life.Luke, one of the pioneers of augmented reality for Pokémon Go, recalls how early AR games helped lower suicide rates as kids went outside and connected in real life. But instead of building on that positive impact, many gaming companies adopted Big Tech's “engagement at all costs” model, prioritizing time spent and revenue over safety. Now, we're left with games and chat platforms rife with violence, profanity, and harm. It's a grim reality that Gravity Jack is determined to change. As Jennifer and Luke build safer alternatives, they offer three key guidelines for parents:No chat is safe without live, active moderation (something they're actively developing). If a game is “freemium” with in-app purchases, it's likely predatory.Play the game yourself before letting your child in.Resource: Family Gaming DatabaseIn this episode, we dive into virtual reality, AI's role in gaming, and more. Don't miss this vital conversation with Jennifer, Luke, and Nicki from Scrolling 2 Death.Connect with Jen & Luke at Gravity Jack.About Jen & LukeJennifer Richey is a tech entrepreneur, strategist, and co-founder of Gravity Jack, where she helps brands like Ford, Intel, and NASA create cutting-edge augmented and virtual reality experiences. She also holds multiple patents in the AR space.Outside of work, Jennifer is a wife, mom, and proud grandma to three amazing grandchildren. This week we are joined by three students from University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley, School of Podiatric Medicine; James Hughes, representing the Class of 2026, Nader Ramza from the Class of 2027, and Jessica Sima, from the Class of 2028. Students share their path to discovering podiatric medicine, to applying to what is now eleven schools and colleges of podiatric medicine, to the first and second year of didactics, Boards Part 1 and 2, and clinical experiences and opportunities. We do some professor shout-outs and discuss student services, extracurricular activities, and student life at each school. In this episode, Drs. Jensen and Richey and the students discuss the significance of shadowing various health professionals to determine career preferences and find satisfaction in their chosen field. The hosts specifically mention that podiatrists tend to be very happy with their careers due to the wide range of specialization options available to them. They explain that podiatrists can focus on areas they truly enjoy, which contributes to their overall job satisfaction. The students mention their personal experiences with shadowing and how it influenced their career decisions. The students emphasize the importance of shadowing multiple specialties to determine personal preferences. They emphasize that understanding other specialties is valuable even for those pursuing podiatry, as it helps in comprehending the body's other systems and treating patients holistically. The students note that many podiatrists they have worked with and shadowed are incredibly satisfied with their careers. While they acknowledge that satisfaction can be found in other specialties as well, they observe this as a common theme within the podiatry profession. They also mention that students from all schools of podiatric medicine are incredibly happy with their choice to pursue podiatry. Overall, the episode emphasizes the benefits of shadowing different health professionals to help students determine their career preferences and find satisfaction in their chosen field. It underscores the importance of exploring various specialties, including podiatry, and understanding different aspects of healthcare to make informed decisions. https://www.apmsa.org/ https://bakodx.com/ https://bmef.org/ www.explorepodmed.org https://podiatrist2be.com/ https://higherlearninghub.com/
Dean's Chat hosts, Dr. Jensen and Richey, welcome Dr. Tiffany Hughes to Dean's Chat! Dr. Tiffany Hughes is Assistant Professor in the Master of Public Health Program at Midwestern. She holds a Ph.D. in Aging Studies, M.P.H. in Epidemiology, and M.B.A. in Healthcare Administration. She completed post-doctoral training at the University of Pittsburgh in geriatric psychiatry. Her area of expertise is public health and aging with a focus on dementia and falls prevention. She is also interested in geriatric education and providing experiential opportunities to get students interested in working with the aging population. She became involved with the Walk with a Doc program and the Ohio Older Adult Falls Prevention Coalition while faculty at Youngstown State University. She is now a member of the Arizona Falls Prevention Coalition and their partner in the Walk with a Doc initiative with Midwestern University. Listen as we discuss the topics that interested her as a young student and how this impacted her career. From dementia to fall risk, to prevention techniques and strategies to maintain mobility and independence we discuss how all these important topics are covered in multi-disciplinary ways. The Walk with a Doc program helps foster relationships for patients and hopes to “inspire communities through movement and conversation! With an aim to make health and happiness accessible to everyone, walk with a dock offers free walking programs in communities around the world led by local doctors, healthcare providers, or medical students. These ongoing events allow participants to safely walk, parentheses or role parentheses, learn about current health, topics, and meet new people.” Tune in as we discuss the Midwestern University first “Walk with a Doc” Event on the Glendale campus hosted by Dean's Chat co-host Dr. Richey! The event was a success with community, student, and faculty engagement on the topic of Fall Risk Reduction. We started the event with a welcome chat about the importance of activity/movement and its impact on fall risk reduction. In podiatry, our goal is focus on pain reduction and improvement of function specifically as it relates to the foot and ankle and lower extremity, so that our patients can maintain an active healthy lifestyle with the highest quality of life and maintain their independence. Falls are a significant problem in America. It is estimated that every second an older adult falls; One quarter of adults over 65 will hall at home and half won't tell their healthcare provider. This leads to roughly 36 million falls, which account for ~8 million injuries contributing to 3 million Emergency Room visits and roughly 950,000 hospitalizations. What is truly alarming is that of these 950,000 hospitalizations, around 32,000 patients will die. While these are scary statistics, we focused our event on the empowerment that FALLS ARE PREVENTABLE! There has been a lot of research around falls and fall risk prevention. We focused our discussion on the CDC's STEADI approach to fall risk reduction which includes “screening, assessing and intervening.” The STEADI approach has been clinically shown to reduce fall risk by 20%. We distributed information to the participants about this method and discussed 3 key questions as we walked through campus. “Have you fallen in the past year?” “Do you feel unsteady when standing or walking?” “Do you worry about falling?” This helped spark conversation amongst the participants including our student “future doctors” about the importance of asking these 3 simple questions to normalize the discussion about fall risk. We hope you enjoy! https://walkwithadoc.org/ https://www.midwestern.edu/academics/degrees-programs/college-graduate-studies/master-arts-biomedical-sciences www.apma.org www.stepintopodiatry.com www.explorepodmed.org
