“Are you thirsty? Are you hungry? Are you hurting? Are you tired?  Oh my God, thank you for asking. I still might be afraid to give you my real answer. But at least you are opening the door. At least you are giving me the opportunity. At least you are giving truth a chance, to take her first breath, to make her first cry. And Jesus knows the answer before we can open our mouths. It's why he asks the question.  Jesus is setting a table in the wilderness and saying, ‘if anyone thirsts, come to me and drink.'  And even before we can give our yes, Jesus also knows how afraid we can be to give us.  And so even before we can give our yes, Jesus doesn't call us weak, he doesn't tell us to get over it and … he doesn't make it all go away. Jesus asks the question and then says ‘Come here. Don't be afraid. Come here. Your vulnerability is your strength. Come here … let me kiss it and make it better.'” Sermon by Mike Kinman from worship at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 24, 2021 at All Saints Church, Pasadena. “With the guidance of our rector, vestry, staff, and lay leadership, within the ever widening circle of compassion, we stand with those whose dignity is being denied. We locate ourselves with the poor, the powerless, and the voiceless. We are ready to open our doors to protect the demonized until the demonizing stops. May we listen to that which is deepest within us and may love and justice for all prevail in our hearts, our nation, and the world.” Sermon by Sally Howard at All Saints Church, Pasadena, on Sunday, June 23, 2019. 4 March 2018 - Rev. David Pileggi looks at the cleansing of the temple. After turning water into wine, Jesus enters the temple demanding holiness and passion for God. This ultimately gets Him killed. The cleansing is mentioned in all four gospels, but we should note that there is a difference in John’s account. In John, Jesus is not coming to confront religious corruption and abuse. The issue here is about buying and selling; the temple has been turned into a marketplace. For the temple to work there had to be buying and selling …. but not inside the temple! Only in John’s gospel do we hear Jesus say, “My Father’s House.” All of the events of our life do not make sense unless we see them in the light of the cross. Only after the resurrection do the disciples understand. What does building a spiritual temple look like? The first temple was in Eden. 1. The body of Jesus is the temple. 2. The Church is the temple. 3. There is a temple in heaven - God’s Throne room. How does this apply to us? The Church is called to be faithful. Faithfulness should come before success. We are a community that Jesus inhabits. The temple had many flaws …. but Jesus still loved that temple. He longed for its reform and restoration. "The zeal for your house has consumed me." Readings: I Kings 8: 1- 14, Psalm 84, John 2:13-22 Additional scriptures: Romans 11:33-36, Romans 12:1-2, 9-13; 2 Corinthians 6:14-18 & 7:1
