Sunday, February 16, 2025 – We continue our study of 1 John, and Pastor Mike has titled the message “Walk in the Light.” In this discussion, we will see that God truly desires a relationship with us rather than just a form of religion concerning Him. Our text is 1 John 1:5-10. He begins by making it clear to his readers that the message he is sharing comes directly from Jesus; this is not something John is making up on his own in the moment. He then declares something very interesting about God: He says God is light, and there is no darkness in Him. Of all the characteristics of God, isn't it fascinating that John emphasizes that God is light over other descriptions? Why is light so significant? That’s what we’ll discuss in this week’s message. Light reveals things hidden in darkness. John clearly states in this letter and also in the Gospel of John that men love darkness because their deeds are evil, and they hate the light. They despise the light because they are afraid of having their deeds exposed. But remember, the reason God’s light exposes sin is so that men can be forgiven if they would only seek it. God’s promise is to forgive all those who ask. Worship and study with us as we walk in the Light.

Amid a culture that is constantly about sin, self, and secularism, is it even possible to live a pure life? The Apostle John would answer with a resounding yes. This morning as we look to 1 John 1:5-10, we’ll learn how to prioritize living a pure life before the Lord.

The prophet Amos continues speaking as God's voice of judgement against the Northern Kingdom (Israel). God speaks judgment by acknowledging the failures of Israel to honor HIS WORD, failure to honor HIS Glory, failure to honor HIM in worship. There are both spiritual and social failures at fault here. God says here that 'because' of these failures, God's protective hand will withdraw leaving Israel vulnerable to her enemies. Further, Amos 3:7 has been used by the Church of Latter Day Saints as a proof text to justify the 'secrets' of God to HIS prophets ... particularly the false prophet Joseph Smith. But the context of this warning of God shows that Amos 3:7 does not speak of any 'secret' knowledge of God that is hidden.

John knows that sorts of people who can sidetrack a community and lead people astray--today we'll identify them and recognize that they might be us! And then we'll see what we can do about it.

God’s forgiveness is there for us when we fall, but not there so we can jump safely into fellowship with the darkness. Turn on the light. Build a bond with God, His word, and His people who speak His word into you. Our lying heart needs that.
God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. And He invites us to keep walking with Him in the light each day.
We are starting with the promise that, in many ways, is the greatest evidence of our Christianity: nothing demonstrates to us and the world the tangible reality of Jesus Christ crucified, risen and coming again more than our ability to forgive as we have first been forgiven
God calls us to walk in humility in reverence of the Lord to show one's heart turned towards the Lord.

There is no sin in God - there is no darkness in Him at all. This sounds so basic and simple and yet, all of Christian doctrine hangs on this truth. John uses the word "light" here to contrast God’s eternal holiness with mankind’s inherent darkness. If we are going to think correctly about God & Jesus, then we have to think correctly about sin. John addresses three unresolved sin problems when we: - we lie to others by our inconsistent walk - we lie to ourselves by our refusal to admit sin - we lie about God when we claim to be without sin For the person who recognizes their sin and confesses it, verse 9 tells us that God is faithful to forgive that person’s sins and to cleanse them from all unrighteousness, every bit of it.

Lies are always dangerous. The lies that are the most dangerous are the ones we believe. As God's Word breaks the power of the lies, we are given the opportunity to live in freedom. Christ brought into fellowship with God; walk in his light by confessing you sin and seeking forgiveness in him
God is holy. We are not. Our sin disrupts our fellowship with him, but God forgives us in Christ when we repent.
