His book describes what you will experience as you die. Giving details of the death process and your journey into the afterlife based on the author's own Near-Death experience where he died, went out-of-body into the afterlife, and returned to a second life in the same body. His experiences are collated with the Tibetan Book of the Dead; the Egyptian Book of the Dead; and current research on the Near Death-experience by the International Association for Near Death Studies (IANDS); Dr. Ian Stevensens's research on Children who Remember Past Lives at the University of Virginia; and studies of After-Death Communication at the University of Arizona. In this episode, I look at the Bangs sisters, two of the most famous spirit mediums working in Chicago in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Lizzie and May Bangs became especially well known for their “precipitated” spirit portraits: images said to appear on prepared canvases during sittings, rather than being painted in the ordinary way before the audience's eyes. The episode focuses on who the sisters were, how their portrait sittings were described, and why the paintings became such an important part of American Spiritualist culture. I examine the methods later associated with their work, including the use of framed canvases, window light, and controlled viewing conditions, and I discuss why these portraits were treated as something more than séance curiosities. They were framed, preserved, displayed, and compared with photographs of the dead, which gave them a lasting place in Spiritualist collections. I also spend time on the pictures themselves as physical objects. Did they look like ordinary oil paintings? The historical descriptions suggest something more unusual. Later writers and museum accounts often describe the Bangs portraits as smooth in finish, with little or no visible brushwork, rich color, and an appearance closer to softly blended portraiture than to heavily worked oil paint. Some accounts compared the effect to airbrushing. The episode also covers specific surviving examples, including portraits linked to Queen Victoria and to Emily and Rose Carson in the Camp Chesterfield collection. Just as important, I look at reports from sitters who said the finished image resembled the deceased closely, sometimes down to details such as beard style, jewelry, or coloring. "Sincerely held religious belief" is now a common phrase in discussions of American religious freedom, from opinions handed down by the US Supreme Court to local controversies. The "sincerity test" of religious belief has become a cornerstone of US jurisprudence, framing what counts as legitimate grounds for First Amendment claims in the eyes of the law. In Sincerely Held: American Secularism and Its Believers (U Chicago Press, 2022), Charles McCrary provides an original account of how sincerely held religious belief became the primary standard for determining what legally counts as authentic religion. McCrary skillfully traces the interlocking histories of American sincerity, religion, and secularism starting in the mid-nineteenth century. He analyzes a diverse archive, including Herman Melville's novel The Confidence-Man, vice-suppressing police, Spiritualist women accused of being fortune-tellers, eclectic conscientious objectors, secularization theorists, Black revolutionaries, and anti-LGBTQ litigants. Across this history, McCrary reveals how sincerity and sincerely held religious belief developed as technologies of secular governance, determining what does and doesn't entitle a person to receive protections from the state. The "sincerity test" of religious belief has become a cornerstone of US jurisprudence, framing what counts as legitimate grounds for First Amendment claims in the eyes of the law. In Sincerely Held: American Secularism and Its Believers (U Chicago Press, 2022), Charles McCrary provides an original account of how sincerely held religious belief became the primary standard for determining what legally counts as authentic religion. McCrary skillfully traces the interlocking histories of American sincerity, religion, and secularism starting in the mid-nineteenth century. He analyzes a diverse archive, including Herman Melville's novel The Confidence-Man, vice-suppressing police, Spiritualist women accused of being fortune-tellers, eclectic conscientious objectors, secularization theorists, Black revolutionaries, and anti-LGBTQ litigants. Across this history, McCrary reveals how sincerity and sincerely held religious belief developed as technologies of secular governance, determining what does and doesn't entitle a person to receive protections from the state. This fresh analysis of secularism in the United States invites further reflection on the role of sincerity in public life and religious studies scholarship, asking why sincerity has come to matter so much in a supposedly "post-truth" era. Dr. Charles McCrary is a scholar of American religion, focusing on secularism, religious freedom, race, and science. His work has been published in academic journals including the Journal of the American Academy of Religion, Religion & American Culture, and Religion. There are two main Spiritualist Camps in America dating back to the Victorian Era: Lilydale in New York and Cassadaga in Florida. We've visited Cassadaga several times, which is known as the Psychic Capital of the World. Almost as often as St. Augustine, and like St. Augustine, Cassadaga oozes spiritual energy. While some people might think that Spiritualism was just a craze during the Victorian Era, it is a real religion that still exists today and is recognized by the military as a standard religion.
