Sunday, March 2, 2025 – Today’s message continues our study of 1 John and is titled “Light Reveals Love.” The Apostle John, known as the Apostle of Love, had a different disposition in his younger years. He and his brother James were nicknamed the “Sons of Thunder” by Jesus due to their hot-tempered and impulsive nature. However, after years of reflecting on Jesus' teachings and experiencing both physical and spiritual maturity, he recognizes that Love is the better way to navigate life. Love is the central theme of today’s message. How we love others is a significant indicator of whether we are genuine followers of Jesus. We live in a world of spiritual darkness; John tells us that we know we are true followers of Christ if we walk in the light and love our fellow brothers and sisters as Christ does. A clear sign of our love is how far we are willing to limit our spiritual liberties to avoid becoming a stumbling block or, in other words, a negative influence in someone else’s life. Scripture warns strongly against those who would cause a weaker or younger believer to stumble and fall away from God's grace. Our Christian liberties come with serious responsibilities and consequences if we live carelessly. Worship and study with us as we are encouraged and challenged in our exploration.

John in vv3-4 says the reason he is writing this letter is ‘so that we may have fellowship with him – that's John – and with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, that our joy may be full'! He says, v5, “This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: GOD IS LIGHT and in Him is no darkness at all!” Scripture says, in the Beginning God created the Heaven and the earth, and darkness was over the deep, and God said, “LET THERE BE LIGHT!” GOD IS LIGHT! That's why John says, “In Him there is no darkness!” Now John warns in v6ff, “If we claim to have fellowship with Jesus but walk in darkness, we lie – and we don't live by the Truth! But if we walk in the Light, as He is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the Blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin.”
Who is God & What is He like? 1. GOD IS SPIRIT • John 4:24-25 2. GOD IS LIGHT • 1 John 1:5-7 3. GOD IS FIRE • Heb 12:28-13:1 4. GOD IS LOVE (2X) • 1 John 4:8 & 4:16 Why is Love so Special? Because God IS Love! ~ 1 John 4:7-21 Here is why LOVE is so very special? In these four things God IS; Him as LOVE is the most perfect likeness to be fully manifested by us, His Image - Bearers. -You are and have an eternal spirit…yet it is a spirit of and for one man. -You can burn , and your tongue can light a fire, but it is without the consuming power that enables God to purify every other child of His. -You are – according to Jesus – a light to the world around you, but you and I do not carry the responsibility to be the light of the whole cosmos. -You can – and must – love God and love your brother with the exact same love given to you that is the love Father God loved and loves Jesus with. This love is, as Paul declares, “ the greatest of these…” gifts! 1 John 1:5-7
John tells the churches he's writing to that God is light and God is love. What does that mean for us? sLet's find out together as we read 1 John.
Fr Antony Jukes says that St. Athanasius used the analogy of the sun, its light, and its warmth to explain the mystery of the Holy Trinity: just as the sun, light, and warmth are distinct yet inseparable and eternal, so too are the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The sun represents the Father, the light symbolizes the Son, and the warmth reflects the Holy Spirit, illustrating their unity and co-eternity in the divine essence.

This sermon was preached at Crosswater Community Church in Sultan, WA on 12/1/24 This Christmas season we look at 1 John as we reflect on the coming of Jesus, the Light of the World, who transforms every aspect of our lives. We begin by recognizing that God is light, calling us to walk in His truth. As we abide in Him, we live as children of God, experiencing His perfect love and overcoming the darkness of the world through faith in Christ. In turn, we are called to share His light, love, and victory with others, spreading the hope and joy of His coming. "GOD is light and in HIM is no darkness at all" - 1 John 1:5 JESUS came into this world to bring this light and life to those trapped in darkness and death. HIS people are saved by HIM and are called to live by HIS light and make HIM known to the world.

Send us a textThe Apostle John uses a phrase three times in his writings to refer to the nature of God. In1 John 1:5 he makes this declaration: This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.The message he heard and proclaimed was the message of the coming of the Son, the Word into the world. John was his earest disciple along with Andrew and he bears witness to Jesus. This theme is also stated in John chapter 1, He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. The basic truth of the statement, God is light is that in God is absolute moral purity, absolute purity. The context of John's use is contrast between people's walk in darkness, sin and God the pure, holy altogether righteous One.Later the Apostle Paul will use this language of light bearing to refer to Christian witness and living as children of light. This week, for the final message of our summer series on the book of Ephesians, we will be looking at what it means to live as children of light. In a world like ours, with forces at play that are neither safe nor kind, it can be easy to keep parts of our lives hidden in the dark. But when we hide from God and from others, shame grows, and we become less of who we were made to be. This Sunday, we'll look together at God's invitation for us to bring everything into the light of Christ, to be transformed in that light, and to stand in the power of God to overcome darkness as children of light.- Series Description -How often do we lose sight of God's character? We rupture a relationship and feel guilty. We sin and justify ourselves instead of seeking forgiveness. We lose our job and feel devastated. We need to remember who God is. God is powerful. God is alive. God is a unifier who makes us one. God is love. God is generous. God is light. The letter to Ephesus declares who God is, and we will ask God to help us not only believe these truths but walk them out in our lives.
God has given us the vision for His church. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and love your neighbor as yourself. What if we actually did those things? What if the vision was, we obey Jesus?Join us as we walk in the light of Jesus, living honestly, sincerely, and truthfully in faith. Let's start with confession, repentance, and faith. Together, we can change ourselves and the world.
We have so much darkness in our world today. 1 John 1:5 says this... “This is the message which we have heard from Him and declare to you, that God is light and in Him is no darkness at all.” Let's shine that light today on Morning Manna.
"I have come as a light into the world" John 12:46
In 1 John 1:5, John declares the message that he had heard from Jesus: God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. What does it mean that God is light? How does the light change christian living and shape John's message to the church at Ephesus? Note the communication, context, and content of John's message found in 1 John 1:5. /// Reach out to Micah and the Walk Talks team by emailing mdherbster@southlandcamp.org!
