As we continue our study through the book of 1 John, Sunday's passage begins to unveil John's evidences written to give believers God-ordained grounds for assurance of eternal life. After false teachers left the church and caused some to doubt the sufficiency of the gospel, John writes to show his readers the evidence of genuine salvation. Throughout the book, John will circle around three categories of evidence: (broadly stated) right doctrine, obedience, and love. In 1 John 1:5–2:2, having just said that the message of life gives fellowship with the Father and the Son, John explains what this fellowship looks like and what it does not. He calls this "walking in the light" (v. 7), but explains that it is not about doing better or being good, but acknowledging and confessing sin and trusting in Jesus, who is cleansing us from all sin (v. 7; 9). Christians only walk in the light (as John says) because of the transforming work God does in those He saves through the gospel. The main point is that fellowship with God results in a life of growing holiness, requires honest acknowledgment of our sin, and is possible only through Jesus Christ our advocate and propitiation. I. Fellowship With God Results In A Life Growing In Holiness (v. 5-7) II. Fellowship With God Requires Acknowledging Our Sin (v. 8-10) III. Fellowship With God Only Come Through Our Savior (2:1-2)
A sermon by Kelly Brady from 1 John 1:5-2:2
What is Christianity actually about? In this opening message of our series on 1 John, Pastor Mark begins where John begins: with eyewitness testimony. John declares that he and the other apostles heard, saw, and touched the Word of Life — and that claim was not made in a corner. It was a public proclamation of a real Savior who entered history in an actual human body.Drawing on the historical context of early Gnosticism, which denied the goodness of the physical world and infiltrated the early church like a parasite, this sermon unpacks why the bodily reality of Jesus matters so much. Our deepest problem isn't a lack of enlightenment — it's sin before a holy God. And our only hope is the real, historical, bodily work of Jesus Christ, testified to by eyewitnesses and proclaimed so that our joy may be complete.
Let us thank the Lord today that His Word is not only forever settled in heaven (Ps 119:89), but it also purifies our soul. Are you saved now? Are you one of God's children? Do you remember, we were all once in darkness, in a filthy place, rolling around in sin like scarlet and crimson from Isaiah 1:18, we were like pigs in a pigsty. Filthy muddy from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head, enjoying the pleasures of our flesh, but seemingly lost. Never having experienced the cleansing power of the Love, Nature and the Blood of Christ Jesus, and how His Word is able to cleanse us of all of that filth. Even today, we are born again and we still make mistakes. It ‘s not the Lord's will for us to keep sinning, His will is for us to be grow up into Christ. Being like Him by our obedience to His Word, to His commandments, and by the power of the holy Spirit we are transformed when we slow down and chew, meditate on His Word, according to Romans 12:1 and 2.So if and when you slip up, and you feel dirty and guilty inside, in your soul, your mind, will and emotions…… let us read how the blood, the finished Works of Jesus, the Word of Life now benefits us when it comes to being set free from all sin and sickness. God has made provision by the blood of Jesus, the Word of God, the Word of Life, for us to be cleansed. This program covers the following Scriptures from the Amplified Classic version (AMPC): Psalm 119:89, Romans 12:1-2, 1 John 1:1-10, Ephesians 5:25-26, Matthew 5:16, Romans 11:36, 2 Corinthians 5:17.Support the showClick Here to Send Us Your Prayer Request.

This Sunday, we are blessed to observe both the ordinances of Baptism and the Lord's Supper at the beginning of the 11:00 A.M. service. We are also beginning our study of the book of 1 John. This short book was written to give believers the God-ordained grounds of assurance. John's first readers were being confused by false teachers who had separated from the church (1 John 2:19) and claimed to have the true knowledge of God and salvation (2:20-21). This led gospel believers to question their standing with God through Jesus. Throughout the book, John will provide tests by which the reader can "know they have eternal life" (5:13), which is the purpose of the book. Assurance is a wonderful blessing and a necessity for following Christ joyfully and faithfully, but assurance not based on God's own word is presumption rather than real assurance. Only God's word gives us the grounds of assurance to examine and know that we have eternal life. But before John launches into any tests of assurance, he immediately proclaims the identity of Jesus. Only the true Jesus, whom the apostles proclaimed, is able to save. If we are wrong about Jesus, it doesn't matter what we are right about. If we are wrong about Jesus, it doesn't matter how morally we live or what spiritual knowledge we have. Everything rests on this foundation: The Christ whom the apostles proclaim is fully God and fully man, and He is the only Word of Life and the only fellowship with God. I. Only the True Jesus Is The Word of Life (v. 1-2) II. Only the True Jesus Gives Fellowship with God (v. 3-4)

As we continue in our journey through First Epistle of John, Pastor Sean leads us through 1 John 1:5–10, where we are reminded that God is completely holy and full of light, with no darkness in Him at all. The message challenges us to live with honesty before God rather than hiding sin behind appearances or empty words. Pastor Sean emphasizes that walking with Christ means continually bringing our sin into the light, trusting in God's grace and forgiveness instead of pretending we have it all together. It's a humbling and hopeful reminder that real freedom is found not in perfection, but in confession and dependence on Jesus.

As we begin our new series through the letters of John, Pastor Kevin leads us through 1 John 1:1–4, pointing us to the truth that Jesus Himself is life. The message centers on the importance of truly knowing Christ and resting in the reality that we are deeply loved by Him. Pastor Kevin emphasizes that our faith is not meant to be distant or transactional, but rooted in a real relationship with the living Savior who invites us into joy, fellowship, and closeness with Him. It's a powerful reminder that lasting hope and fullness of life are only found in Jesus.

In a world that constantly tries to reshape God into someone more comfortable and manageable, John reminds us that we cannot separate God's mercy from his holiness or forgiveness from repentance. The God who is light invites us into honest fellowship with him, but you can't have that genuine fellowship while intentionally walking in darkness. Are you managing darkness privately or walking honestly in God's light?
Pastor Mitch Helmkamp preaches from 1 John 1:5-10 and shares that true fellowship with God begins when we rightly behold His holiness and majesty, which humbles us and exposes how small and sinful we truly are. John shows that fake fellowship claims closeness to God while continuing in darkness, but genuine fellowship with God is marked by walking in the light, and honestly confessing sin.
In a world of deepfakes and digital deception, how can we know what's spiritually authentic? John faced the same challenge with false teachers in the early church. His solution? Stay rooted in the historical reality of Jesus Christ—the Word of life that was heard, seen, and touched by eyewitnesses. An authentic relationship with Jesus leads to genuine fellowship with God's people, where joy is found together. The question we're left with is simple: are we settling for substitutes, or are we experiencing the real thing?

“If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth.” (1 John 1:8 NLT) Visitors to San Francisco can’t help but be amazed at the architectural marvel that is the Golden Gate Bridge. But its beauty and innovation came at a tremendous cost. During the initial phases of construction, several workers lost their balance and plunged to their deaths in the San Francisco Bay. The builders were concerned about the human tragedy, of course. But they were also concerned about the delays in the schedule because of the deaths. They needed to find a way to keep their workers safe under the most dangerous conditions. The solution they arrived at was something that had never been done before. The builders installed a giant safety net under the construction area. The workers knew that if they fell, the net would catch them. The experience wouldn’t necessarily be pleasant for the unfortunate worker, but at least he would live to tell about it. Thanks to the net, workers could go about their business without the fear of dying. With the threat removed, they were able to move quickly and finish the project. Did you know that God has put a safety net under you? By that I mean, when you slip, when you fall, when you make a mistake, you don’t have to worry that your name will be blotted out of the Book of Life. You don’t have to face the prospect of becoming persona non grata with God. The apostle Paul wrote, “For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard. Yet God, in his grace, freely makes us right in his sight. He did this through Christ Jesus when he freed us from the penalty for our sins. For God presented Jesus as the sacrifice for sin. People are made right with God when they believe that Jesus sacrificed his life, shedding his blood” (Romans 3:23–25 NLT). If you believe in Christ, you have a spiritual safety net. You have a barrier against spiritual death. Because Jesus came into your heart, forgave you, and committed Himself to you, He now protects you, seals you, and justifies you because of that commitment. The fact is that we as Christians will sin and fall short. The Scriptures, as well as our own experiences in life, tell us this is true. According to 1 John 1:8, “If we claim we have no sin, we are only fooling ourselves and not living in the truth” (NLT). This isn’t an excuse for ungodly living. Nor is it a license for sin. It’s a simple acknowledgment of reality. Yet Paul wrote, “I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love” (Romans 8:38 NLT). Nothing can dismantle our safety net. Reflection question: What does your spiritual safety net mean to you?
