What do you think about the Bible instructing us to rejoice when we go through grief and suffering? What does it mean to rejoice? How do you rejoice when earthly circumstances are ripping your life apart? Why Can’t God just save His children & then make life easy? Does our faith really need to be tested for it to be reliable? Perhaps this one of those things in scripture we all nod w/a serious face & say “Amen”, hoping it doesn’t happen to us. How should Christians respond to suffering? Does rejoice mean we smile, remain stoic, strong, brave, act unphased? Is it possible our view of suffering is too narcissistic? What if the testing our faith isn’t for our benefit at all? What if our suffering is necessary… for others see our faith being successfully tested, so they are inspired to believe?

Every so often, when I am listening to the radio in my car, a loud blaring sound will come over the radio for about 15 seconds and then someone will come on and say, “This was only a test. If this had been an actual emergency, you would have been told what to do.” Tests are designed to help us learn and know what to do in life.

Have you ever needed a pep talk when you found yourself struggling? From a friend, a coach, a boss? That is what the Apostle Peter was doing in his letter to the early Christians. From 1 Peter 1:6-9 (NIV), 1. Rejoice in spite of life’s realities. (v.6) 2. Proven faith brings praise to God. (v.7) 3. Love + “Believe In” = Faith (v.8) “Believe In” = Trust 4. End result of faith journey is salvation. (v.9) We are in trouble if our faith is dependent on us. Thankfully our faith is in the source of our faith, that being Jesus Christ. Application: Where are you with Jesus? Curious? Ask questions and learn more. Ready? Consider baptism. Committed? How can you trust more?

The strangest bedfellows - 1) the strangeness of joy and grief; 2) the strangeness of the crucible, refining our faith; 3) the strangeness of loving the unseen - how to redeem this tension - seeing and loving the unseen.
