Fort Smith in Arkansas was the gateway to the West. The city is over 200 years old and got its start as a military outpost. There are several haunted locations here that are connected to that military heritage. And some are connected to the law, like the US Marshals. And then there are places of ill-repute. Fort Smith was a place where outlaws, bootleggers, gamblers and ladies-of-the-evening flourished on the traffic that came up the Arkansas River. Across northern Canada, geography, distance, and limited infrastructure have long made equitable access to education harder to achieve. Connected North was designed to change that - using interactive video technology to connect northern classrooms with scientists, artists, Elders, and other experts. Launched with support from Cisco Systems and now operated by TakingITGlobal, it is built on a foundation of deep community trust and partnership. But technology is only part of the story. What makes Connected North work is the way it was built - in relationship with communities, not just for them. That distinction matters, and it didn't come without hard-won lessons. In this episode of Let's Imagine, host Bruce MacDonald is joined by Willa Black, who founded the program while at Cisco and now serves as Volunteer Chair of Connected North's Advisory Board, and Paul Boucher, a member of the Rocher River people, residential school survivor, Knowledge and Language Keeper, and Language and Cultural Specialist at Paul William Kaeser High School in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories. Together, they explore what it takes to build credibility and trust with northern communities, what genuine partnership looks like from inside the classroom, how Connected North keeps community voices at the centre as it grows, and what gives them hope about the future of equitable education in the North. This episode draws on insights from Imagine Canada's Partnering for Impact report, which features Connected North as a case study in why partnership-led models matter. After two years of near-misses, Scout finally closes the deal on a longbeard in the Missouri Ozarks. On Sept. 1, 1995, a police officer in Fort Smith, Arkansas pulled over a vehicle. A man named Jerry Cogan was driving and his girlfriend, 24-year-old Lori Murchison, was the passenger. Lori worked at a local nursing home. She had a four year old daughter, Britney, and adored her little girl. But Lori had been battling an addiction to drugs, according to what her friends told police, mainly to methamphetamines and also alcohol. Because of that, Lori had been living with her mother, Nancy, in between staying at different local motels, and Nancy had been taking care of Lori’s daughter on and off. Lori and Jerry had been at a bar that night. When the officer pulled them over, he believed that both of them had been drinking. So, he placed Jerry under arrest for DUI, and Lori for suspicion of public intoxication. Lori was taken to the Sebastian County jail. And she was released sometime after 5 AM on September 2nd. She told detectives that she planned to get money and come back to bail Jerry out. But she never returned to jail. The last time she was seen alive was at the Continental Motel, when she was picking up a key to a room. Her family had no way of knowing where she was - or that the hunt for this missing mother would eventually involve charges of corruption at the highest levels of government. Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell continue their coverage of the Charity Beallis case with a look at what divorce court records say about her marriage and life with Dr. Randy Beallis. Charity was found dead by gunshot along with her 6–year-old twins just one day after her final divorce hearing on Dec. 3, 2025, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Based on the hearing transcript Mandy and Liz share their opinions about what was going on in Charity's relationship with Randy. Also on the show, Charity's lifelong best friend Kayla talks about who Charity was as a friend, a mom and a woman struggling in an allegedly controlling relationship — as well as Charity's surviving son's search for a legal team to help with his mom's investigation (and potentially pursue legal action). As the Sebastian County Sheriff's Office and prosecutor's office continue to operate in the dark, Charity's son, John Powell, is taking on the fight to get justice for his mother and his siblings. To help with John Powell's legal fees, go to staypes.ky/charitygofundme Let's Dive in…
Send us Fan MailIf you've ever thought your vote doesn't really matter, that politics is too confusing, or that the whole system is just... too much, this episode is for you. A lot of us are carrying around this low-grade exhaustion with national politics right now, and it's easy to let that feeling bleed into disengagement. But there's a whole level of government that most people skip over completely, and it's the one that fills potholes, sets school policy, and shapes what your actual daily life looks like. This week we're stepping away from our regularly scheduled programming to participate in Podcasthon, a global event where thousands of podcasters dedicate one episode to a charity that matters to them. Ours was an easy choice: the League of Women Voters. Angela is the vice president of the Washington County chapter and secretary of the League of Women Voters of Arkansas Education Fund C3, and this conversation gave us a chance to dig into what this organization actually does, how it operates, and why it matters right now more than ever. In this episode, we get into:Why the League is nonpartisan but absolutely political (and why that distinction matters)How the League protects democracy by actually suing the government when it breaks its own rulesWhat direct democracy means and the ballot initiative Arkansans can sign right nowA real picture of how local elections are won by fewer votes than you'd thinkConcrete ways to get involved, from $20 memberships to volunteering at voter registration drivesAngela shares what it was actually like to stand on the hill in Athens where the very first democratic assembly happened, why she thinks Arkansas's unexpected ranking in social connectedness matters, and the story of a candidate in Fort Smith who ran unopposed and still lost because not a single person, including himself, voted. Sami gets into her own personal mission: getting Arkansas off the bottom of voter turnout rankings. This episode is part civic education, part pep talk, and a whole lot of two Arkansas women who genuinely care about this stuff. You don't have to run for office. You don't even have to understand how every piece of the system works. You just have to show up. Press play, and let's talk about why that actually means something.Mentioned in this episode:Podcasthon (global podcasting charity event): podcasthon.orgLeague of Women Voters (national): lwv.orgLeague of Women Voters of Arkansas: lwvar.orgLeague of Women Voters of Washington County, AR: lwvarwc.orgVOTE411.org (nonpartisan voter information): vote411.orgSupport the showOrder Traveling Light wherever you get your books!Sign up at bfreakingawesome.com to get the latest news, insights, and episodes straight to your inbox.Follow Be Freaking Awesome on Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, and Instagram.Let us know what questions you want to be answered and discussed by emailing us at podcast@bfreakingawesome.com.
As many of you know, I am serving in this season as the Interim Pastor of Grand Avenue Baptist Church in Fort Smith, Arkansas — a historic and faithful congregation with a rich legacy of gospel ministry. It is a true honor to serve the people who call Grand Avenue home. This past Sunday, I delivered a message entitled “Jesus' Vision for Our Life and Church.” While this sermon was prepared with the people of Grand Avenue and the Fort Smith community specifically in mind, its message speaks to every believer and every church. I want to use this episode of the For Leader podcast to share it with you. I invite you to watch or listen and ask the Lord to speak to you through His Word. May He align our hearts with His vision for our lives and His Church.

Two months since Charity Beallis and her six-year-old twins Eliana and Maverick were found shot to death in Bonanza, Arkansas. No arrest. No suspect named publicly. No official autopsy released. Now her father is speaking out about what he saw.Randy Powell tells Hidden Killers he viewed Charity's body at the morgue. According to Powell, she was shot twice — in the chest and between the eyes. If accurate, two gunshot wounds makes self-infliction essentially impossible. Someone killed her. And no one has been charged. The deaths came one day after Charity's divorce from Dr. Randall Beallis was finalized. According to his attorney, joint custody was awarded and the children were to return to their father December 5th. The bodies were found December 3rd.In February 2025, Randall Beallis was arrested and charged with aggravated assault involving choking, domestic battery, and child endangerment. Charity emailed the medical board: "I had to call 911 on Sunday night for choking & beating me up. My two 6 year olds saw everything. We are traumatized."In July, Arkansas State Police substantiated child maltreatment for both twins. In October, Randall pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic battery and received a suspended sentence.Three days after the bodies were found, a dumpster diver discovered family belongings at an apartment complex in Fort Smith — photos, children's artwork, a necklace with the twins' names. The address matches Randall Beallis' February 2025 arrest report. Investigators have not commented.Randall Beallis has not been arrested or charged in connection with the deaths. His attorney says he was not responsible and is cooperating fully.Someone knows what happened that day.#CharityBeallis #TrueCrimeToday #BonanzaArkansas #RandallBeallis #ElianaBeallis #MaverickBeallis #ArkansasMurder #DomesticViolence #TrueCrimeNews #HiddenKillersJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Text a Message to the ShowFollowing the law should be straightforward and black and white. Following department policy should be the same way. But navigating the murky waters of how to lead and inspire people to do their best work in a competitive and demoralizing environment… well, that's going to take some courage. Our guest today is Travis Yates, who rose up through the police ranks, saw a lot of good and bad leadership, had to practice it himself, and now is ringing the alarm that bad leadership can destroy an agency. Today we're specifically talking about courageous leadership and what it's opposite, cowardly leadership, looks like in a police department.Resources:Travis' website: travisyates.orgMusic is by Chris Haugen Hey Chaplain Podcast Episode 131Tags:Police, Career, Cowardice, Courage, Family, Interviews, Leadership; Police Culture, Politics, Promotions, Ride Alongs, Supervision, Fort Smith, Little Rock, Tulsa, Arkansas, OklahomaSupport the showThanks for Listening! In tonight's show we pick back up on a little “series within a series” I started a couple of years ago entitled “Exploring the Wild, Wild West.” We previously explored Coffeyville and Dodge City, KS as well as the Santa Fe Trail. In tonight's episode, we're going to explore one of the very earliest Wild West towns in America…Fort Smith, Arkansas, home to “Hell on the Border” - one of the nastiest jails ever to house a baddie. We also happen to be the only place I've ever heard of that someone brought a cannon to a fist fight…so if you enjoy a road trip to a place with a long and colorful history, a weekend adventure to Fort Smith might be right up your alley! Luckily for me, this is an easy episode…as I am currently a park ranger at Fort Smith National Historic Site…and tonight's episode is sort of just another day at work! I hope you'll join me tonight to hear all about it! If you'd like to get in touch with me, just shoot an email to mywaywardstory@gmail.com -or- Head on over to www.waywardstories.com
Years before Charity Beallis and her six-year-old twins were found shot to death in their Arkansas home, her own father told police she confessed to murder. According to a police report, Randy Powell said his daughter admitted she "is the one who shot Shawna" — Shawna Beallis, the previous wife of Dr. Randall Beallis. Charity allegedly told her father she was relieved detectives never fingerprinted a wine glass she'd been drinking from at the scene. That wine glass was documented. It was never tested. Shawna's death was ruled a suicide in 2012. The evidence was destroyed. And the woman who allegedly confessed went on to marry the widower. Now she's dead too — found December 3rd, 2025, alongside her children, one day after a court awarded her convicted abuser joint custody. In this episode, we break down the 2012 death scene, the alleged confession captured on body-cam in 2021, and why Fort Smith police reviewed the case and changed nothing. We examine Randall Beallis' own statements to investigators — including his request, hours after his wife's death, to call his lawyer about stopping divorce papers. We look at Charity's nine months of documented warnings, her pleas to prosecutors and lawmakers, and the custody ruling that came one day before she and her children were found dead. Two women connected to this man are now dead by gunshot. Thirteen years apart. A father's story keeps changing. The evidence is gone. And the only person who could have answered the questions that matter is silent forever. The investigation is ongoing. No suspect has been named. The questions don't stop. #CharityBeallis #RandallBeallis #ShawnaBeallis #ArkansasCrime #TrueCrime #DomesticViolence #ColdCase #SebastianCounty #FortSmith #JusticeForCharity Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? As the Passover approaches, the plot to kill Jesus solidifies. A woman anoints Him with expensive ointment, an act the disciples see as waste, but Jesus commends as a proper preparation for his upcoming death and burial. This contrasts with Judas, who has agreed to betray Jesus for thirty pieces of silver. At the Last Supper, Jesus institutes the Sacrament of the Altar which gives us His body and blood for the forgiveness of sins. The Rev. Dr. Richard Davenport, pastor of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Fort Smith, AR, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study Matthew 26:1-30. To learn more about Our Redeemer, visit OurRedeemerFortSmith.360unite.com. The Gospel of Matthew bridges Old and New Testaments, presenting Jesus as the promised Messiah who fulfills the Law we could never keep and establishes His kingdom of grace for all nations. Written by a tax collector transformed by pure grace, Matthew reveals Christ as the true Son of David and Emmanuel (God with us) who challenges us with the crushing demands of the Law in His Sermon on the Mount to the sweet comfort of the Gospel in His death and resurrection. From royal genealogy to glorious resurrection, this verse-by-verse study proclaims the One who conquered sin, death, and the devil for us, now delivering forgiveness, life, and salvation through Word and Sacrament as He remains with His church always, even to the end of the age. Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. This month, we traveled to western Arkansas to visit Miss Laura's Brothel Museum in Fort Smith. In this episode, we discuss our tour, the background of the museum, and the history of brothels. Known for its elegance and high standards, it was a popular establishment in Fort Smith. Today, it has been transformed into a museum that preserves and showcases the vibrant history of Fort Smith, as well as the captivating lives of the women who worked there.Miss Laura's provides a comprehensive educational experience regarding the history of prostitution, women's rights, and women's experiences in Fort Smith and other similar communities.
Fort Smith, Arkansas—historic, quiet, and full of secrets. In this chilling episode, Austin shares two unforgettable experiences from a house bordering the town's historic district. It started with a shadowy figure mistaken for his mother, and ended in a desperate plea to an unseen presence. Years later, as he returned to gather the last of his belongings, the silence broke. Stomping boots, slamming attic doors, and a confrontation even the police couldn't explain. Some spirits honor a truce—but others wait until the house is nearly empty. What really happens in these old homes when no one is watching? If you have a real ghost story or supernatural event to report, please write into our show or call 1-855-853-4802! Six weeks later, animal trackers located Melissa's nude body in an isolated part of the Ozark National Forest and the hunt was on to find her killer. In the thirty years since Melissa Witt's murder, a number of strong suspects have popped up on investigators' radars, including serial killer Charles Ray Vines, yet to this date no one has been charged with her death.
