Tim Leffel is a veteran travel writer and editor who left the music industry to explore the world, building a location-independent career along the way. He's reviewed over 1,500 hotels across dozens of countries and now publishes insights on remote work and global living. Susan and Tim talk about fear, freedom, and finding value in travel. Why travel fears are overblown (and what's actually risky) What it really takes to become a digital nomad Why remote work is easier now—and maybe lonelier What 1,500 hotel reviews teach you about quality How to spot a great hotel before booking Why aggregator sites are just the starting point Where to find hidden hotels not on major platforms Why digital nomads aren't ruining entire cities How governments are incentivizing relocation globally Why hotels fail when they try to "do everything" Why lighting, outlets, and alarms matter more than luxury *** Our Top Three Takeaways 1. Perception often distorts reality in travel, especially around hot topics like safety and overtourism. Fear of international travel is largely driven by media amplification and unfamiliarity, not actual risk, with many destinations objectively safer than the U.S. At the same time, overtourism is real but highly localized to specific neighborhoods, not entire cities or countries, and can often be addressed through policy and distribution. 2. The digital nomad shift is real, but hotels haven't figured out how to serve it well. Technology has made location-independent work mainstream, but hotels struggle to compete with short-term rentals that offer space, kitchens, and livability. The opportunity exists for hotels to stop trying to serve everyone and instead design specifically for a targeted segment, such as solo, long-stay remote workers. 3. Small, practical details define the guest experience more than big concepts. After reviewing 1,500+ hotels, Tim emphasizes that the basics (functional lighting, clear labeling, comfortable workspaces, and eliminating small annoyances) have an outsized impact on satisfaction. Many of these issues persist because hotel teams don't regularly experience their own product as guests. This week a listener question has prompted us to discuss iron absorption and the effect of anti-nutrients. In particular, do phytates and oxalates in plant foods put us at risk of iron deficiency? Daisy and Clare conclude the answer as ever may be to focus on eating a diverse range of plant foods and not to go too much into the weeds (unless of course they are dandelions- an important source of iron we forgot to mention!)If you'd like to support our work and be part of a growing community of like-minded people working towards creating a healthier and more sustainable future please join the Plant-Based Health Professionals UK following the link below:https://plantbasedhealthprofessionals.com/membershipYou don't have to be a health care professional to join, but by doing so you're not only supporting our work, you'll be improving your own health; with membership starting from as little as £15 a year, join us now and be part of the change you want to see.References:https://plantbasedhealthprofessionals.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/12/IronFactsheet201123.pdfhttps://www.bda.uk.com/resource/iron-rich-foods-iron-deficiency.htmlPires SMG, Reis RS, Cardoso SM, Pezzani R, Paredes-Osses E, Seilkhan A, Ydyrys A, Martorell M, Sönmez Gürer E, Setzer WN, Abdull Razis AF, Modu B, Calina D, Sharifi-Rad J. The word "fascism" gets thrown around a lot these days, sometimes so freely that it starts to lose its edge. But what would it actually mean to develop a philosophy of anti-fascism, a sustained, rigorous intellectual framework for understanding how fascism takes hold and what might inoculate us against it? That question feels newly urgent in a political moment when the ideological infrastructure of authoritarianism is being actively rebuilt, and when the thinkers who laid the groundwork for that infrastructure — including, notoriously, Leo Strauss — are being drafted into its service. Can a philosopher be anti-fascist in method and intention and still have their ideas weaponized by fascists? Is writing that resists easy comprehension — writing that forces its readers to slow down, struggle, and think — a form of resistance or a form of elitism? And is there a meaningful difference between "thinking for yourself" and "doing your own research," or has that distinction collapsed entirely in the age of the meme and the algorithm? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Jeffrey A. Bernstein, Professor of Philosophy and Department Chair at the College of the Holy Cross, whose forthcoming book Adorno and Strauss: An Anti-Fascist Philosophy (SUNY Press) makes the provocative case that these two thinkers — usually filed under opposite ends of the intellectual spectrum — are surprisingly complementary resources for building a philosophical resistance to fascism. Jeff identifies four key areas of convergence: their shared use of Jewish thought as a resource for critiquing political authority; their resistance to what he calls "universal communicability" and the fascist reduction of thought to soundbites and slogans; their critique of the primacy of the practical; and their rejection of teleological conceptions of history. What emerges is a picture of anti-fascism that is less about boots on the ground than about rebuilding the capacity to think in a culture that is doing everything it can to prevent that.Grab a drink and join us as we sit down with two of philosophy's strangest bedfellows — and discover that the most unexpected intellectual partnerships sometimes make for the most urgent conversations.Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/strange-bedfellows---------------------SUBSCRIBE to the podcast now to automatically download new episodes!SUPPORT Hotel Bar Sessions podcast on Patreon here! The final chapter of Reflector's tour of LGBTQ activism examines some of the controversies currently roiling society—starting with a look at one of the most contentious subjects in American history: sex education. With interviews with some of the minds behind the National Sex Education Standards, reporter Ben Kawaller offers a rare look into the philosophical underpinnings of the new ideas about sex and gender that have taken root throughout American society, what they reveal about the tensions between “gay” and “queer,” and what they might spell for the future of the movement—and for America. Can some of Dr. Craig's logic also be used by gender identity theorists?
The episode you're about to hear is the first in a new series from our friends at Longview Investigations, the podcast company run by Matt Boll and Andy Mills, both familiar voices if you've been listening to our show for a while. The series is called Strange Bedfellows, and when Andy first asked if we'd be interested in sharing it with our listeners, I said absolutely not because I'm still bitter that the Moose likes Andy better than me and because every time we drop something new into the feed, at least a couple of you complain and then Jesse starts crying and sweating and it's this whole thing. But after hearing the first episode, I changed my mind.Strange Bedfellows is exactly the kind of thing Blocked and Reported listeners will be into. It's about how LGB became LGBTQ, what brought that sometimes uneasy coalition together, and why it now seems to be coming apart. The series is hosted by Ben Kawaller (also a BAR alum), and it's smart, funny, and genuinely thought-provoking.And here's the bonus offer: Andy and Matt have generously offered three months free of Longview's membership program for our Primo subscribers. If you take them up on that and subscribe now, you'll get access to the full three-part series before it's released publicly. This offer is only available to Primos and the link to join is right… To hear more, visit www.blockedandreported.org

With his usual immunity from embarrassment, Ben Kawaller explores how a movement for civil rights became a project to shape society's understanding of sex and gender. With humility, humor, and an almost compulsive lack of piety, reporter Ben Kawaller explores the origin story of one of the most polarizing abbreviations of the modern age, telling the story of how gays and lesbians became LGBT. Voltaire once said that if God didn't exist, we would've invented him. There's something deep within the human psyche that needs to follow after something. We crave it. Yet, we need to be careful that what we invent or what we follow after does not destroy us. The world is full of idols. A world that God created. They compete for allegiance. Our job is to pick our alliance well. It determines the course of our life. I've been meditating on Jeremiah over the Christmas break. What it has come to reveal to me is that in this new year, our sole focus requires a realignment to one single voice that will not compete with others. A voice so particular, so steady, it does not stutter. It's a voice in the wilderness crying out. Will we attune our ears? In other words, the Christian life comes down to being attentive to the voice of our creator. He calls out. He reveals his plan. He comforts. He draws us close. He affirms.
In this thought-provoking episode of The Hen Report, Mariann Sullivan is joined by Cornell Law professor and animal advocate Michael Dorf to explore the complex phenomenon of “strange bedfellows” in the animal rights movement. They examine how activists navigate situations where they find themselves aligned with unexpected allies on animal issues, while potentially disagreeing on other social and political matters. This…
I do not understand how these individuals have survived so long without me. They should be commended. Like when a small child learns to walk. It is something they need to do and should come naturally to ensure its survival. Myself- I was walking almost the moment I was born but I am to understand not everyone is as gifted. There is something to be commended about the Great General Pip Manadarin, even though he understands how to walk, he will still crawl to give himself, I presume, some sort of tactical advantage. No matter how shameful or dishonourable it might appear from the outside looking in. He truly is a dragonborn that doesn't care what people think of him, which must be a great relief to himself and those that he surrounds himself with. ...Because no one thinks very highly of the man you see.If you're still wanting to pledge for the Jarren's Outpost Board Game you can right here! Epstein is in the news again. Everyone is looking for answers and hoping that the powerful will be held accountable, but this seems less likely by the day. Although this scandal is in the news everyday, it is amazing how little we actually know about the individuals involve. In part one of what will likely be a multipart series, David takes us on an Epstein deep dive. It is a story of unlikely connections, crazy coincidence, and strage bedfellows. If it wasn't for all the evidence David provides, I wouldn't believe it. If you want to listen ad-free, check out our substack at hemisphericpress.substack.com. In this essential episode of the Sex with Emily podcast, Dr. Emily sits down with Dr. Ina Park, associate professor at UCSF School of Medicine and author of "Strange Bedfellows: Adventures in the Science, History, and Surprising Secrets of STDs." From her early days as a peer educator dressed as a giant condom at UC Berkeley to becoming a leading expert in sexual health, Dr. Park brings both humor and expertise to one of the most stigmatized topics in sexual wellness. We dive deep into the myths and realities surrounding STIs, exploring why HPV is truly "the common cold of the genitals" that nearly everyone will encounter, how herpes stigma far outweighs its actual health impact, and why people who know their status are actually safer partners than those who don't. Dr. Park shares fascinating insights about everything from The Bachelor's problematic STI testing to the connection between pubic hair grooming and infection risk. This conversation tackles the shame and fear that keep us from having honest discussions about sexual health, while providing practical advice on testing, disclosure, and maintaining healthy relationships regardless of STI status. We also explore the vaginal microbiome, why some people are more susceptible to infections, and promising new treatments on the horizon. Key Topics Covered: HPV: Why it's unavoidable and how to think about it differently Herpes disclosure and reducing transmission risk The truth about oral sex and STI transmission Pubic hair, Brazilian waxes, and infection risk Vaginal health and the microbiome Why knowing your status makes you a safer partner Breaking down STI stigma and shame Dr. Park's refreshing approach reminds us that STIs are simply part of being sexually active humans, and that knowledge, communication, and compassion are our best tools for sexual wellness.
