Colossians 1:9–14 reminds us that spiritual maturity doesn’t come from trying harder but from praying deeper. Just as children grow in understanding, God desires His people to grow in faith and wisdom. Paul’s prayer for the Colossians teaches us how to pray for that kind of growth: to know God’s will, to live in ways that please Him, and to remember all that Christ has already done for us. When God’s people pray for maturity, we ask not only for help in life’s challenges but for hearts that reflect His character—fruitful, faithful, and full of gratitude for His redeeming grace.

Pastor Blair continues our sermon series through Colossians: Complete in Christ, by drawing our attention to a portion of Paul's prayer for the church in Colossae which reminds us that a life that's pleasing to God is marked by gratitude in Christ.
And so, from the day we heard, we have not ceased to pray for you, asking that you may be filled with the knowledge of his will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him: -Colossians 1:9-10 ESV

Pleasing God isn't about putting a bigger smile on God's face. Pleasing God is about seeking to honor the One who already greatly delights in us.

As believers in Christ, we should desire to walk in a manner worthy of the Name we bear, because He has made us His own… so that our lives will bear fruit and bring us into greater intimacy with God. “For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” [Colossians 3:3]

Colossians 1:9-14
The apostle Paul would traditionally open his epistles with a prayer, and these prayers can be quite moving, and quite revealing. The prayer at the beginning of the Colossian letter is not only a beautiful prayer, but opens up to us what this brother in Christ hoped all churches and believers would experience--a life worth living, and worthy of God.
