Where does one begin in describing their knowledge of God? Do they begin with propositional or theoretical knowledge? While propositional knowledge of God is good and necessary for the Christian life, there is another knowledge that is just as important. As a matter of fact, it is a knowledge which the apostle Paul prays for in Ephesians. It is the kind of knowledge which is immediate and intimate. It is a personal knowledge of God the Father. Such knowledge is at the heart of the evangelical message. The Christian can have personal fellowship with God the Father through the Lord Jesus Christ. In the new covenant, the Holy Spirit comes into hearts so that the Christian can have direct knowledge of the love of God and the glory of God. In this sermon on Ephesians 1:17 titled “The Christian's Knowledge of God,” Dr. Lloyd-Jones follows Paul's prayer for ordinary Christians to have this exact and experiential knowledge of the true and living God. Listen to this passionate appeal to know Him.

What does it truly mean to know God rather than simply know about Him? That question sits at the heart of everything we explored in this gathering, anchored in the opening verses of 2 Peter. Peter, writing what he likely knew would be his final letter before his execution, wastes no words. He opens by holding two names at once, his birth name and the name Jesus gave him, reminding us that our past and our transformed present are both part of who we are. He calls himself a servant before he calls himself an apostle, placing humility at the foundation of any authority or purpose we carry. And then he delivers something remarkable: the faith we have received is equal in worth and honor to that of the apostles themselves. Not earned, not achieved, but received, assigned to us by divine appointment. Grace and peace, Peter prays, be multiplied through the knowledge of God. Not a static, fixed portion, but a growing, deepening supply that increases as we move from knowing facts about Jesus to actually knowing Him personally. Two young people stood before us and told us the same story in different words: they were surrounded by the truth their whole lives, and yet the moment of real encounter came suddenly, unexpectedly, when their hearts were made ready to receive it. That is the God we serve, the one who meets us where we are and opens what only He can open.

In Part 2 of Growing in the Knowledge of God, Andreas Kyriacou teaches that prayer is far more than asking God for our needs. It is daily fellowship with the Father that transforms our lives, deepens our knowledge of His character, and draws us into a closer relationship with Him. As we seek His face, we grow in faith, confidence, and Christlikeness.

All this week we're looking at some great quotes that help us to look deeply into who we are and how our culture has shaped us and our kids. Journalist Dorothy Day wrote these thought-provoking words: “If I have achieved anything in my life, it has been because I have not been embarrassed to talk about God.” Parents, how much time do you spend talking about God? And when you talk about God, what is it that you tell your kids? Research from the National Study of Youth And Religion points to the fact that America's teenagers and young adults have little or no knowledge about God. When asked to verbalize what they know about God, few have anything to say. Much of their confusion is rooted in the fact that there haven't been any adults committed to teaching them about who God is and who He's called them to be. Parents, study the Scriptures, know God, and teach your kids.

The spiritual life cannot be fully understood or lived until the believer grasps the distinction between positional truth and experiential truth. Learning God's Word is always the starting point for the Christian way of life (1 Pet 2:2; 2 Tim 3:16–17). Until the believer orients to what God has already accomplished at initial salvation, he cannot discern what God now expects in fellowship (Rom 6:3–11). Confusion or neglect of Scripture inevitably drives the Christian into legalism, emotionalism, ritualism, activism, or frustration (Col 2:8, 20–23; Gal 3:1–3). Bible doctrine learned and applied provides the foundation for executing the spiritual life (Rom 12:2; Jam 1:22). God's riches for the believer include both positional and experiential blessings, and the former establishes the ground on which the latter are enjoyed (Eph 1:3; Col 2:6–7). Though He be invisible to us, we are not so to Him. Neither the darkness of night, the closest curtains, nor the deepest dungeon can hide any sinner from the eyes of Omniscience. The trees of the garden were not able to conceal our first parents. No human eye beheld Cain murder his brother, but his Maker witnessed his crime. Sarah might laugh derisively in the seclusion of her tent, yet was it heard by Jehovah. Achan stole a wedge of gold and carefully hid it in the earth, but God brought it to light. David was at much pains to cover up his wickedness, but ere long the all- seeing God sent one of His servants to say to him, "Thou art the man"! And to writer and reader is also said, "Be sure your sin will find you out" (Num 32:23).

"This is eternal life, that they know you the one true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent."  These words of Jesus reveal the importance of coming to know God more and more.  We grow in this knowledge in various ways: study and spiritual reading, personal dealings with Him in our prayer life, living in HIs presence.  To know Jesus fully, however, we also have to enter into his own experience of loving and trusting God in and through the trials of our life.

Our Daily Bread Podcast | Our Daily Bread

As soon as I jumped into the pool, my goggles filled with water, and I could barely see. Despite having no formal swimming instruction, I slowly persevered for the two laps of a race I had entered on a whim. As a teenager, it was an embarrassing experience. But years later, after taking lessons and learning the proper breathing and swimming techniques, I enjoyed learning all four strokes. What a difference it makes when we have the proper training. The same is true with our knowledge of the Bible. When we understand the context and meaning of what we’re reading in Scripture, we can grow in our faith and properly apply it to our lives. The apostle Paul wanted Timothy to stand firm in his faith, avoid quarrels, and not be deceived by false teachers. In his final letter, Paul urged Timothy to study the Scriptures. “Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15). I realized that the more I learned and practiced proper swimming techniques, the better swimmer I became. In our spiritual walk, as we learn and understand the words and concepts in the Bible, we grow in our knowledge of God—enabling us to distinguish truth from falsehood. As we read the Bible, let’s continue to grow “so that [we] may be thoroughly equipped for every good work” (3:17).

Are you truly growing in the knowledge of God, or do you only know about Him? In this Words From The Word daily devotion, Pastor Roderick Webster opens Colossians 1:9-12 (KJV) and walks us through the Apostle Paul's powerful prayer for the believers at Colosse — a prayer that asked for no material things, only that they would know God more deeply, walk worthy of Him, and bear fruit in every good work. You might be asking — what does it mean to walk worthy of the Lord? Why does Paul pray for patience and long suffering with joyfulness? Is there a difference between knowing about God and actually knowing God? How do I grow in the knowledge of God daily?Key points from this devotion:- Paul prayed that believers would be filled with wisdom and spiritual understanding- Walking worthy means our conduct and lifestyle should be pleasing to God- Being fruitful in every good work is part of God's desire for every believer- Increasing in the knowledge of God requires reading, studying, and accepting His Word- Knowing God personally is salvation — knowing Him fully is the journey of a lifetimeIf this devotion encouraged you today, please like, comment, and share it with someone who needs a word.
