Simone Kain is the first to admit that she's reluctant to enter the political sphere, but, in the same breath, recognises the power and influence of the children's books that she has created. Co-creator of the popular George the Farmer books that help educate children about the systems that work to get their food on the table and their clothes on their back, Simone Kain didn't always see herself as connected to agriculture. While Kain spent plenty of time as a child with the animals around her parent's farm, she always preferred to be drawing rather than doing hands-on jobs around the property. This preference for the creative arts meant that for years Simone felt that she wasn't connected to agriculture. Simone is one of the Antola Trading Shirt Ambassadors, celebrating incredible people from right across Australia who are having an impact within their industry or community. If you live in a city, chances are the only time your kids get to see where their food comes from is when they visit a farm stay. Simone Kain and her business partner Ben Hood wanted children across Australia to understand more about farm life, regardless of where they live. Together they created George the Farmer, a character who is teaching children about the journey food takes from paddock to plate. Simone tells us where you can find George, and why it's important to connect the town and country this way.

Simone Kain is the co-creator of George the Farmer, a social enterprise that focuses on educating kids about proper farming practices as well as how food and fiber are produced using apps, music, videos, picture books, and free curriculum-aligned educator’s guides. She drew inspiration from a 2012 survey in Australia that shows 10-12-year-old students don’t know where their food comes from. Simone describes George the Farmer as “everyone’s mate” and tackles the daily activities of Australian farming with passion.   In this episode, Simone explains how George the Farmer educates children. She shares the story behind George the Farmer, how they structured their app, and why knowing where your food comes from is essential. She also discusses the need for people to learn that a career in agriculture is not always about farming and how George the Farmer aims to do just that.     “We try to get kids to start thinking about the amazing opportunities available in agriculture.” – Simone Kain     This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast:    The origins of George the Farmer. How much do you know about where the food you eat comes from or about the people who grow it? Alarming statistics indicate that many Australian students, especially in urban areas, don't understand where their food comes from or how it's grown. My Be The Drop podcast guests this week, "George The Farmer" duo Simone Kain and Ben Hood, are on a mission to turn this around. What started as a business idea to create an informative App and an additional business revenue stream, has grown into a range of books, videos and merchandise to educate an urban audience about rural issues; something they're hugely passionate about. So passionate in fact, this year they performed 5 shows a day for 14 days straight to approximately 400,000 people at the Sydney Royal Show!  In today's episode of Be The Drop, Simone, Ben and I discuss the power of storytelling to educate, we hear an impromptu rendition of one of their most popular songs, and they reveal top tips for leaving a lasting legacy...  SUBSCRIBE to the blog here with the 'unlock my storytelling superpowers' form on the right!
