Stephen K Schuster is a New York based photographer who co-hosts the brilliant Emulsions podcast with friend Hollis Monk Thayer. When the pair appeared on the show a couple of weeks ago I asked he'd be up for coming back to talk about his long running project City Kids. He agreed and here we are! We forego lenses in favour of a conversation about image making, terrible ideas, good ideas and we open with a Prime Lenses favourite, A Question of Color. More about this show:A camera is just a tool but spend enough time with photographers and you'll see them go misty eyed when they talk about their first camera or a small fast prime that they had in their youth. Prime Lenses is a series of interviews with photographers talking about their photography by way of three lenses that mean a lot to them. These can be interchangeable, attached to a camera, integrated into a gadget, I'm interested in the sometimes complex relationship we have with the tools we choose, why they can mean so much and how they make us feel.
Stephen recaps his show that was 20 years in the making, talks about the fine art world and his DIY show, the legacy of City Kids on its young subjects, the excitement around the show, printing to sell to art buyers, different cross sections of art and culture appreciating the exhibition, the future of City Kids and more!
For half a decade, the Kansas City nonprofit WeCode/KC has offered hands-on computer and coding classes primarily to Black students, to make a difference in the tech industry. Plus: A Kansas business processes film for photographers, cinematographers and even pop stars like Megan Thee Stallion.
Doctors who treat eating disorders in Kansas City are seeing more cases among younger people. But resources for "accepting" treatments are not meeting the demand. Plus: Wildlife in the Midwest and Great Plains are suffering from persistent drought.
You have a story to tell
Stephen talks about his film photography project that's been 18 years in the making, why scanning and printing choices make a big difference, finishing a project about teenagers before social media and smart phones, the moment he knew this would be a long form project, why it took a while for the show and book to happen, why now is the perfect time for a project about teenagers from the y2k era, supporting future generations of artists and more!
Does the bible really say not to have sex before marriage? Or just not to have sex outside of marriage? And if I'm not ever planning to get married, does it really matter if I have sex now, since it's not hurting a future spouse? (2:08)What does the bible say about masturbation? Is it okay or not okay? (8:57)Why is praying with your significant other so important, and how should you pray with your significant other? How do you spend time with God, together with them? (19:48)How do you navigate sex in a marriage when the wife has gone through a lot of childbirth trauma? Especially when that has caused a lot of postpartum depression and anxiety around sex. (23:55)How can married people and people with families practically love single people in their lives? (32:19)How do you set good boundaries for physical touch in singleness? (39:37) How does the gospel apply to people on the other side of sexual assault (i.e. offenders and abusers)? (49:34)How can I talk to my kids about sex, preferably without scarring them for life? (56:36)At (1:05:10), Kent mentions a video course called The Birds & the Bees, which you can find here.Given how common sexual abuse sometimes is in churches, what steps is City Kids taking to help prevent sexual abuse from happening on Sundays? (1:05:42)

This week the girls are joined by the guest they've been referencing on *literally* every episode, the one and only @kristipartyof6 (and soon to be party of 7!). Kristi talks all about her blended family, her pregnancy journey thus far, and how she met the love of her life. She then shares the pros and cons of raising kids in nyc (hint: it's a major grind), and how she's able to get it all done while somehow keeping a positive perspective throughout all the chaos. They end the episode with some nyc-specific recs for the two things that matter most in this world: food and beauty. Follow @kristiipartyof6 on IG and TikTok for more (and while you're at it follow @honeywerehomepod on IG, duh).

Over the course of the last year here at the Acton Institute, we've been bringing in local social providers so that our staff can gain a better understanding of the critical work that they do here in the Grand Rapids, Michigan, metro region to help alleviate poverty. Today, Eric Kohn sits down to talk with the leader of one of those social service providers, Trevor Rubingh of New City Kids.New City Kids offers after school programming for local low-income youth. Children and teens get a chance to explore music and academics in a creative and fun environment. Though there are many challenges of urban life, especially for youth, these programs give children a safe place to feel and hear that they are valued and loved. New City Kids aims to draw children into hope by developing in them skills, talents, and desires for their future. By surrounding them with a community of love and development, we strive to set youth on a path of transformation that will carry them forward for the rest of their lives.Subscribe to our podcastsApply Now for Acton UniversityNew City Kids Hosted on Acast.
