John Safran burst into the public consciousness in 1997 as a contestant in the ABC TV show Race Around the World, where young filmmakers travelled the world making four-minute films in just 10 days. Safran won the popular vote on the reality show after running through Jerusalem naked, and asking a voodoo priest to put a curse on an ex-girlfriend. Almost 30 years on, the show is back, with Safran as a judge. Today’s conversation is hosted by Good Weekend senior writer Gay Alcorn, who talks to Safran about that early experience, but also growing up Jewish, antisemitism and the contradictions and limits of free speech.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What if the words you use (and the stories you tell) are the currency of your career and business? Aurora Winter has built multiple 7-figure companies, won awards for her books, and been featured everywhere from ABC-TV to Oprah Radio. And her thesis is: communication isn't a soft skill. It's the foundation of everything! In this episode, Colleen and Ashleigh sit down with Aurora to dig into the neuroscience of communication, why your words are quite literally triggering (or killing) buying decisions, and what Steve Jobs knew about storytelling that most people don't. Whether you're trying to grow a business, launch a book, or just get people to actually listen to you, this one's packed! We talk about why thought leaders need to be authors (even in an AI world), how to turn one idea into multiple streams of income and impact, and why Aurora finally sat down to write the YA fantasy series she's been thinking about since she was nine.Aurora Winter

Bestselling novelist Holly Ringland on writing from joy instead of fear, the toolkit she built to meet the inner critic with self-compassion, and finding the first true sentence of her debut after decades of silence. We discuss Why the pain of not writing eventually outweighs the pain of writing. What grief and loss can crack open in a writer that nothing else can. How the first true line of a novel can arrive once you stop listening to the reasons you can't write it. A bullet-point approach to plotting that protects the nervous system from the blank page. What to ask for from early readers, and what to refuse. The distinction between self-doubt and the inner critic, and why it matters. At 29 years old, Matt Grace weighed 129 pounds and walked into his mother's house after a three-day crack and alcohol binge. She told him that if he was going to die, it would not be in her house. That was the boundary that started everything. On this episode of The Hard Way, Joe De Sena sits down with Matt Grace, author of God Doesn't Relapse: Sex, Drugs, and the Life That Almost Killed Me, a former ABC TV reporter who overdosed in a newsroom and spent 13 years destroying every relationship through addiction, manipulation, and enabling. Matt breaks down how his father's well-intentioned spoiling robbed him of grit and ambition, how his family's enabling nearly killed him, and what happened the morning he got on his knees with a rifle beside him and prayed out of sheer desperation. They also dig into why parents loving their kids too much can be a death sentence, why service is the foundation of lasting recovery, and how structured accountability and community pull people out of destruction. Things You Will Learn: Why enabling and over-providing destroys a young person's ambition and capacity to endure hardship. The difference between a boundary that saves a life and a rescue that ends one, and what it takes to hold the line. Why service and community replace the void that addiction fills, and why recovery without purpose does not hold. Tools & Frameworks Covered: Hard Boundary Setting: Draw the line. Hold the line. Let consequences teach what words cannot. Service as Structure: Replace self-obsession with outward action. One hour helping someone else is one hour not destroying yourself. Earned Identity Over Given Identity: Stop handing outcomes to your kids. Let them grind. Let them earn. The struggle builds the person. If this episode moved you, do not just listen. Do something about it. Sign up. Show up. Do the work. Spartan.com. No more excuses. Matt Grace is an author and transformational recovery expert who has spent more than two decades sober after overcoming addiction himself. With a degree in Addiction Studies and over 10,000 hours mentoring individuals and families, he has dedicated his life to helping people break destructive cycles and rebuild their lives. As Israel and the United States continue their war with Iran, even promising to assassinate the new and hardline ayatollah, Pope Leo has emerged as a champion of international law. He's called for an immediate ceasefire. Tens of millions of people maybe hearing him, but does the leadership in Jerusalem, Washington and Tehran care? Leo understands the brutal history of Iran's regime, but he's worried about the strongest nations behaving as they choose, without restraint. What balance is he trying to strike? This week, as part of the ABC's look at the persistence of antisemitism in Australia and the world, the Religion and Ethics team partnered with ABC TV and Big Ideas here on Radio National. In a special episode of Big Ideas, we explored the religious roots of anti-Jewish prejudice because certain Christian and Muslim texts have been manipulated to fit political ideologies. A key turning point came in the 1800s, when a racial form of antisemitism began to supplant religious bigotry, with the most lethal consequence by the 1930s and 1940s. Geoff Levey of the University of New South Wales explained this change to me and my colleague Scott Stephens. The bookshelves of the Dalai Lama are groaning with awards for peace and justice work, including the Nobel Peace Prize. But he recently added a more unusual accolade – a Grammy award for the best spoken-word book recording. It's another example of how religion and popular culture are deeply enmeshed. Research by the US-based Faith and Media Initiative suggests audiences, including those with no religious belief, love religious themes on the big and small screens. THE CROSSROADS is a gripping, family-centered mystery for both loyal fans and newcomers. Readers love Joe Pickett—a likeable, dogged hero who always tries to do the right thing—and this time, his three daughters share the spotlight. Set against the fierce beauty of the modern West, where energy empires, cartels, and powerful families vie for control of the land, Box delivers a timely, emotionally charged thriller about family, loyalty, and the cost of standing for what's right in a world where corruption runs deep.At the heart of C.J. Box's appeal is his creation of game warden, Joe Pickett, an unlikely hero who has nonetheless become one of the most beloved protagonists in contemporary crime fiction. Joe is not a hard-drinking big-city detective or a noir antihero; he's a polite, hard-working game warden in rural Wyoming, a family man who “lives paycheck to paycheck” and is deeply fond of his wife and daughters (no brooding lone wolf clichés here). He's human and fallible – he sometimes screws up, doubts himself, or gets in over his head – but he always tries to do the right thing. That said, he's encountered some very grisly scenes and insane villains. And game wardens are unique because they can legitimately be involved in just about every major event or situation that involves the outdoors and the rough edges of the rural new west.C. J. Box is the #1 New York Times of twenty-six Joe Pickett novels, eight stand-alone novels, and a story collection. He has won the Edgar, Anthony, Macavity, Gumshoe, and two Barry awards, as well as the French Prix Calibre .38, the Western Heritage Award for Literature, and two Spur Awards. An avid outdoorsman, Box has hunted, fished, hiked, ridden, and skied throughout Wyoming and the Mountain West. He has been executive producer on shows based on his books, including ABC TV's Big Sky and Joe Pickett on Paramount+.#cjbox#speakingofwriterspodcast#authorpodcast#joepickett#bookpodcast

MEET BILL BENNETT Bill Bennett studied Journalism at the University of Queensland before joining the ABC as a journalist. He's made 17 feature films as writer, producer and director. He's won Australian Film Institute Awards (Australia's equivalent of the Oscar) for Best Film and Best Director and been nominated a further twelve times. He's had two films in Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival and four films selected for the Toronto Film Festival. As an author, Penguin Random House has published his YA supernatural thriller trilogy, Palace of Fires. MEET JENNIFER CLUFF Jennifer Cluff is a producer of feature films and a dramaturge who has taken her skills from theatre into literature and film. She began her career as an actress, at the tender age of 17, starring in the classic ABC TV series, SEVEN LITTLE AUSTRALIANS. Then followed more TV, some movies, and theatre – at the Sydney Theatre Company and the Queensland Theatre Company. During this time she worked with playwrights on the development of their material. She later script edited Bill Bennett's first feature screenplay for the film A STREET TO DIE, which was nominated for five AFI Awards, including Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay. As Bill's partner, she subsequently script edited all his screenplays, including the multiple AFI Award winner KISS OR KILL – a film which she also produced with Bill. Jennifer has since produced, along with Bill, 10 feature films, all of which were released theatrically. #youonthecamino #caminodesantiago #firsttimepilgrim #thecaminoexperience #caminopodcast

Start with the gut. Though most of us rarely think about that organ, unless we're among the 90 million people who have gastrointestinal problems each year, the gut is the source of many seemingly unrelated physical and mental disorders that afflict millions of Americans—such as kidney stones, asthma, a ruptured abdominal aorta, and even cancer or a heart attack. Most people assume everything's fine until something hurts. But by then the trouble has been brewing a long time. To be really health savvy, we need to understand the role the gut plays in health, which goes far beyond digestion, and begin taking care of it. A graduate of Columbia University and New York University School of Medicine.Dr. Lamm is the recipient of numerous honors, including American Bariatric Society Recognition Award, Alpha Omega Alpha Award, New York Founders Day Award. Dr. Lamm is active in clinical research and is a panel physician for the New York State Athletic Commission. ESPN, HBO, CNN, ABC-TV, E, FOX News, Good Morning AmericaIt takes an Intense Passion & Enthusiasm to achieve Success in your Business, Fitness & Lifestyle Goals. My guest is Entreprener, Celebrity Nutritionist & Fitness Specialist ~ Robert Ferguson, MS, CN. Healthful living and lifestyle changes work," said the author of Conquering the Munchie Monster. "What so many look for is a quick fix; but at the end of the day, they are less than successful because they don't believe they can be successful." Ferguson, who owns the company Diet Free Life, has been helping people achieve weight loss through healthful living since 1998.A former U.S. Marine, he works with both the general population and celebrities. He also is a physical conditioning and nutrition specialist for professional boxers on Showtime®, HBO®, ESPN® and "The Contender." One of Ferguson's goals is to bridge the gap within the African American community between knowing what is healthful and practicing what it knows. He conducts free live cooking demonstrations and fitness programs, and delivers motivational speeches in urban areas across the country. Ferguson teaches people how to make their favorite recipes more healthful, and he shows his clients how to incorporate good health into their existing lifestyles with diet and fitness plans customized to meet each person's needs. "There is a misconception that healthful living is boring, bland and difficult to maintain. But it really can be enjoyable, fun and easy," he said. "Many people who want to be healthy feel like they have to walk away from their cultural identities," he added. "They have an all-or-nothing mindset: either eat bland and boring -- steamed broccoli and salmon -- or go back to eating fried chicken every day." Friends and family often are the biggest stumbling blocks to living a healthful lifestyle."There's an internal battle between being healthy and being accepted," Ferguson said."People are always thinking about what they'll lose by upgrading their lifestyle with nutrition and fitness. When people start to eat healthfully, and all their friends and family continue to eat unhealthfully, they feel like they stand out." But Ferguson believes that when healthful efforts are viewed as a lifestyle change rather than as a diet, individuals will become self-reliant and empowered -- and therefore experience long-term success. They also will set positive examples for those closest to them. "I want to open eyes and minds to show that life can be lived and experienced differently without the word DIET," Ferguson said ~ dietfreelife.com© 2025 All Rights Reserved© 2025 BuildingAbundantSuccess!!Join Me on ~ iHeart Media @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASAmazon Music ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy: https://tinyurl.com/BASAudSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23ba
