The Kent Wildlife Trust and Buglife – two UK-based conservation groups – compared the number of dead insects on vehicles in 2004 […]
Host Beth Garner and Co-host Joanne Szupka discuss two hot topics from the 2022 AICPA Employee Benefits Plans Conference in Nashville, TN. These include Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investing, as well as cybersecurity.Key Takeaways:[0:55] Beth and Joanne attended this year's conference and had the opportunity to hear directly from regulatory agencies.[1:59] A broad range of topics were discussed at the conference, which were mainly geared towards CPAs who audit plans.[2:19] Two key takeaways from the conference though, which are especially relevant for plan sponsors, included ESG investing and cybersecurity.[3:14] The meaning of ESG investing, along with the implication of the Department of Labor's (DOL's) 2021 ruling on it, is examined.[11:37] What can you do to ensure your ESG investment goals are met? [14:07] The scope of the DOL issued guidance on cybersecurity is explored.[15:31] Alarming stats on cybersecurity are reviewed, which underscores the importance of being diligent. Ep. 081 - The whole idea of freezing your eggs is becoming more appealing to women each year. Instead of being bound by her (God-designed) biological clock, women can delay having children until their 40s, without the worry of having to produce healthy eggs. The basic idea is that you freeze your strong eggs when you're in your 20s, and then use them when you're in your 40s.Women, young and old, are loving this new freezing technology because it frees them up from having to “settle down” too early. They can pursue their career, delay marriage, be independent, and still have a chance to be a mom – on their own timeframe. As Christian women, we have to view everything, including this egg freezing technology, through a Biblical worldview.Let's take a deep dive in today's episode. From trade to technology to military might, competition between the United States and China dominates the foreign policy landscape. But this battle for global influence is also playing out in a strange and unexpected arena: the movies. The film industry, Wall Street Journal reporter Erich Schwartzel explains, is the latest battleground in the tense and complex rivalry between these two world powers. In recent decades, as China has grown into a giant of the international economy, it has become a crucial source of revenue for the American film industry. Hollywood studios are now bending over backward to make movies that will appeal to China's citizens—and gain approval from severe Communist Party censors. At the same time, and with America's unwitting help, China has built its own film industry into an essential arm of its plan to export its national agenda to the rest of the world. The competition between these two movie businesses is a Cold War for this century, a clash that determines whether democratic or authoritarian values will be broadcast most powerfully around the world. Red Carpet: Hollywood, China, and the Global Battle for Cultural Supremacy (Penguin, 2022) is packed with memorable characters who have—knowingly or otherwise—played key roles in this tangled industry web: not only A-list stars like Matt Damon, Angelina Jolie, and Richard Gere but also eccentric Chinese billionaires, zany expatriate filmmakers, and starlets who disappear from public life without explanation or trace. Schwartzel combines original reporting, political history, and show-biz intrigue in an exhilarating tour of global entertainment, from propaganda film sets in Beijing to the boardrooms of Hollywood studios to the living rooms in Kenya where families decide whether to watch an American or Chinese movie. Alarming, occasionally absurd, and wildly entertaining, Red Carpet will not only alter the way we watch movies but also offer essential new perspective on the power struggle of this century. Mom Tameka Diaz followed her gut that something was off with her daughter Evely (and had suspicions confirmed) not once, not twice, but three times! In each instance, she faced resistance of medical professionals and felt like she was on trial to prove that her daughter deserved tests and screens. The first time, Evely's profound heart failure was discovered. The second time, Evely received a sleep study after much resistance and found she had severe sleep apnea and required surgeries and machines to help her breathe at night. And most recently, they found epilepsy after another round of fighting doctors to give her daughter the tests to look into her concerns. Because of these experiences, Tameka is passionate in empowering other parents to follow our gut and never stop fighting for them. In this episode, she shares each of these three experiences and gives us advice on fighting for our own medically-complex children. She also speaks to the emotional breaking point she hit from all the stress and the necessity for caring for ourselves, too. In episode 272, Kestrel welcomes Angela Weinberg, the cofounder of Kolorete, to the show. A luxury color cosmetics brand, KOLORETE is focused on creating hydrating lipsticks made with organic ingredients. “Lip balms and lip products are traditionally very underregulated. So, when we think of this organic, consumerism ecosystem and conversation, what do we usually think about? I think we usually think about food … it's less common, less mainstream to think about how the lipstick that we apply to our lips or even the makeup we apply to our face — you know, our skin is an organ, and especially with lipstick, it's connected to our mouth so we can really consume lipstick the same way we would consume our food.” This week, we're talking lipstick … that oh-so-fun tint so many of us don our lips with. Taking a step back — you could say lipstick is popular. According to Allied Market Research, the lipstick market size was valued at $8.2 billion in 2018, and is expected to reach $12.5 billion by 2026. But just like fashion – the beauty industry is largely unregulated, making it another prime space notorious for greenwashing its way into the “sustainability scene”. This week's guest is working to build a more thoughtful lipstick brand – it's made of 98% organic ingredients, and she actually dreamed up the recipe in her own kitchen. But most lipsticks today aren't that clean. In a 2013 study done at UC Berkeley, 32 different lipsticks and lip glosses commonly found in drugstores and department stores were tested. Through this research, they detected lead, cadmium, chromium, aluminum and five other metals, some of them being at levels that could raise potential health concerns. Alarming? For sure. As this week's guest points out, synthetic ingredients dominate conventional beauty product recipes. Can you guess one of the recurring synthetic ingredients in lip colors? Yup, it's petroleum, AKA oil, again — petroleum fashion and petroleum beauty. What can we watch for when we seek out beauty products? What can we do to advocate better options in the marketplace? What regulation is missing from the equation in the U.S. today? These are just a few of the questions we explore with Angela. Quotes & links from the conversation: "One of the things I wanted to bring to KOLORETE is that idea that quality matters — the quality of the ingredients, the quality of the manufacturing, the materials, the people, the messaging — and quality should be available at any price point and it should be very accessible.” -Angela *Kestrel misspoke on the documentary she recently started watching — it was actually called Toxic Beauty Kolorete's Website > Follow Kolorete on Instagram > This week's episode is brought to you by Organic Basics is a carbon-neutral, Copenhagen-based brand creating underwear, activewear and everyday essentials. With each passing day, we are losing our nation under the deranged 'leadership' of the Biden Administration. While many Americans slept, Pelosi and the gangsters agreed on a $40 billion spending bill to arm Ukraine; money that will likely flow back into the pockets of the lawmakers and lobbyists that created it. Savage breaks down how Washington is acting like the mobsters on The Sopranos. While the creatures of D.C. veer closer to global warfare, unelected officials like Assistant Secretary of Health Rachel Levine push for the moral collapse of our youth, claiming that 'gender-affirming' care such as puberty blockers are universally accepted in the medical community. Then, listen back to a speech that was truly before its time; Savage's address to the Commonwealth Club of California foretelling the demise of the free press and the dangers of the Government Media Complex.
