Five words, sent to a thirteen-year-old, read aloud by an LAPD detective at the d4vd preliminary hearing, and the answer that came back was two days. This episode covers the July 24 session in the case against David Anthony Burke, the singer known as d4vd, charged with murder in the death of Celeste Rivas Hernandez. Detective Corey Farell, closing out the prosecution's presentation, testified that the messages between Burke and Celeste begin in August 2022, when she was eleven years old, and do not stop until April 23, 2025, the day prosecutors allege she was killed. The January 2024 exchange indicates Celeste was pregnant. It includes Burke's laughing reply to a child carrying that weight, the question about when she would get it done, and one more question he told her his mother advised him to ask, whether it was his. Celeste answered with his name. That name, prosecutors say, was tattooed in red ink on her finger, one of two fingers missing when she was found, and a court brief states they believe that is exactly why. The session also brought Dr. Grant Ho's autopsy testimony. Two sharp-force wounds. A timeline the science could only narrow to at least weeks. And answers her family will never get, because of the condition her remains were left in. Burke has pleaded not guilty to all charges. His attorneys spent the hearing attacking the evidence trail, and the decision on a trial belongs to Judge Charlaine Olmedo alone. Every quote in this episode comes from open court testimony and filings. None of it can be unsaid, none of it leaves this case, and all of it is waiting for a jury if the judge sends it there.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Penn and I have joked about gentle parenting on this podcast more than once. As Gen X parents, it always sounded a little... soft. So when parenting coach Jon Fogel joined us, we figured we'd have a lively debate. Instead, about halfway through the conversation, we looked at each other and thought, "Wait... have we been gentle parenting this whole time?" Also, what is gentle parenting? (Apologies in advance for the many references to Penn getting hit in the balls by a pool noodle.)Jon helped us untangle why so much of what gets labeled "gentle parenting" online isn't really gentle parenting at all, and why kids actually learn better through connection than fear. We even put Jon through a round of our "Hill You'll Die On" game to find out where he stands on everything from pajamas at school and homework to smartphones and curfews.Whether you're raising toddlers, teenagers, or just trying to recover from how you were parented yourself, this conversation might make you rethink a few things. It definitely did for us. We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. (Also send us your weird summer jobs!) “I could not get under oath and swear that I know exactly how Kennedy died in Dallas.” — Ben Barnes, who helped advance JFK's fatal Texas tripIn Texas, there's nothing in the middle of the road, Jim Hightower famously quipped, but yellow stripes and dead armadillos. But Ben Barnes has spent seven decades disproving him. Elected as a Democratic moderate to the Texas legislature at 21, Speaker of the Texas House at 26, and lieutenant governor at 30, Barnes was LBJ's premier protégé and has known every president from Kennedy to Trump. Now 87, he has distilled all his centrist wisdom into Get It Done: Seven Decades of Lessons from a Political Legend.Get It Done is more than just a Texan story. Barnes spent six weeks advancing JFK's fatal 1963 Dallas trip and breakfasted with the president in Fort Worth on the morning of the assassination. He confesses that the Warren Commission “did not get it entirely correct” and notes that the experienced hunter John Connally, who rode in the Presidential limo, always insisted there were four shots, not three. Then there's the equally historic scene at the White House on the day LBJ signed the 1965 Voting Rights Act. Pen in hand, Johnson looked a dozen young Southern Democrats — Barnes among them — straight in the eye and told them he'd just signed away Dixie. “What I'm doing today is probably going to turn the South Republican for thirty or forty years,” LBJ confessed with astonishing prescience. The dirty trickster Richard Nixon, meanwhile, ended Barnes' electoral career. You can hear it on the tapes — Nixon ordering his attorney general, John Mitchell, to “get something on Barnes” before the Texas Democrat got to be governor. Years later, fresh from prison, Mitchell invited Barnes to lunch, apologized over a bowl of spaghetti, then dropped dead on a Washington sidewalk three months later.Barnes forgave Mitchell. He is less forgiving of the current administration, which he says is hammering the final nail into the coffin of LBJ's Voting Rights Act. In the recent Texas Senate runoffs, only seven percent of voters showed up. Seven. Barnes remembers, aged three, watching pickup trucks packed with young men rolling toward the recruiting stations the morning after Pearl Harbor. That generation died for the country. This one, the very alive Texan armadillo quipped, could at least vote to protect American democracy.Five Takeaways• Four Shots, Not Three — But No Conspiracy. Barnes advanced JFK's Texas trip and was at the Fort Worth breakfast on the morning of the assassination. The Warren Commission, he believes, did not get it entirely correct: Connally, a hunter, swore the single-bullet ricochet was a physical impossibility and always counted four shots. Yet Barnes dismantles the grand-plot theories with logistics — Oswald started at the Book Depository thirty days before a motorcade route that wasn't fixed until six days prior, so he could not have known the president would pass. Ted Kennedy assured him before his death that nothing of importance remains unreleased in the files. Sixty years of phone calls from theorists later, Barnes will not swear under oath that he knows how Kennedy died.• The Hostility Began in Los Angeles. The LBJ–Bobby Kennedy feud, in Barnes's telling, started at the 1960 convention, when Bobby went to Johnson's hotel room to talk him out of accepting the vice presidency his brother had just offered. The wound never healed — not through the vice presidency, not through the White House years with Bobby as attorney general. The counter-example was Ted Kennedy, who voted for the civil rights bills, kept a genuine affection for Johnson, and told Barnes three weeks before his own death what a great president LBJ had been.• “This Will Turn the South Republican.” On the day he signed the Voting Rights Act, Johnson looked a dozen young Southern officeholders — Barnes among them — in the eye and told them the bill would probably turn the South Republican for thirty or forty years, and that they would have to work and tell the story over and over again. The prophecy held: Texas, Barnes says, is now the reddest state in America. And the administration's new voting legislation, he warns, would be the final nail in the coffin of Johnson's greatest achievement — making it harder for everyone to vote, and hardest of all for minorities.• “Get Something on Barnes”: Nixon's Vendetta and Mitchell's Spaghetti. Furious that Barnes had helped Humphrey carry Texas in 1968 — and alarmed that he was outpolling every Democrat in the state — Nixon told John Mitchell to go to Texas and manufacture a scandal before Barnes reached the governor's mansion. It's on the tapes, and Barnes keeps copies. His electoral career ended. Years later, out of prison, Mitchell asked him to lunch, apologized over a bowl of spaghetti — “I had time to think in prison” — and died on a Washington sidewalk three months later. Barnes forgave him. The tactics, he notes, are back in fashion.• Seven Percent. Trump, Barnes says, never prepared himself for the presidency — no student of history, bored by his intelligence briefings, and surrounded this term by a team without depth. American prestige is dwindling; NATO is non-negotiable; when America coughs, the world catches pneumonia. At home, racism has resurfaced and women's promotions to the military's top ranks are reportedly frozen. But his sharpest alarm is the emptiest statistic: seven percent turnout in the recent Texas Senate runoffs. The man who watched pickup trucks of volunteers roll toward the recruiting stations after Pearl Harbor asks only that this generation get involved — before the Republic runs out of birthdays.About the GuestBen Barnes was elected to the Texas legislature at 21, became the youngest Speaker of the Texas House at 26, and the youngest lieutenant governor in Texas history at 30. LBJ's “premier protégé,” he has spent the subsequent decades as a consultant, fundraiser, and Democratic power broker, helped establish the LBJ School of Public Affairs, and is founder and CEO of the Ben Barnes Group in Austin. His new book, written with David Ritz, is Get It Done: Seven Decades of Lessons from a Political Legend (Grand Central Publishing, July 14, 2026).References:• Get It Done: Seven Decades of Lessons from a Political Legend by Ben Barnes with David Ritz (Grand Central Publishing, July 14, 2026). Doris Kearns Goodwin: “When a gifted storyteller has a great story to tell, the result is magic.”• The Warren Commission — the 1964 report whose three-shot conclusion John Connally, a hunter who was wounded in the motorcade, never accepted.• Jim Hightower — the Texas populist who actually coined “nothing in the middle of the road but yellow stripes and dead armadillos,” a line usually credited to Ann Richards....

This week on Laugh Lines, Penn and I not only strip down due to our A/C being out... AGAIN! We also tackle two things I never expected to happen in the same podcast: Becoming an (almost) empty nester and hunting down an estrogen patch like it was contraband due to a recent shortage. We discuss my hormones going on strike, and a voicemail from a mom preparing to send her child to college inspired us to share the biggest lessons we've learned after Lola's first year away. We also revisit "Father of the Bride" through Gen Z eyes (Spoiler: George Banks was making a lot of sense), realize that 1991 was somehow 35 years ago, play a very heated game of The Price Is Right, and give a spirited tribute to the late Bonnie Tyler. Yes, Penn got out the recorder. If you're navigating hormones, parenting grown kids, or simply trying to figure out how we all got this old, come laugh with us. We promise you'll leave feeling a little less alone. We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. What do Blockbuster cards, Duke basketball, and a lifelong dream of writing a novel have in common? Somehow they all end up in this episode! This week, Penn and I are joined by #1 New York Times bestselling author Emily Giffin, whose books have defined the modern "beach read" for millions of readers. (And I love a beach read, y'all.) Her latest book, Love You More, just came out this month.Emily shares the path that took her from practicing law to becoming a beloved novelist, and how she creates the messy, relatable characters we can't stop rooting for. Along the way, Emily joins Penn in encouraging me to write my own novel and we explore why there are no truly original ideas - only original voices.Of course, this wouldn't be Laugh Lines without a healthy dose of Gen X nostalgia. We reminisce about Encyclopedia Brown, Blockbuster late fees, and play a game called "Plot Twist," where Emily turns the most ordinary situations into bestselling novels on the spot. We also answer your Laugh Line questions about pickleball etiquette, marriage with ADHD, and the mottos that have shaped our lives. If you learned something from our conversation with Emily, share it with an aspiring writer or somebody who just has a dream that they have wanted to chase. Last year, I was the mom crying in the Target parking lot while buying dorm room supplies. This year? Our daughter Lola is back home after her freshman year of college, and apparently... she knows things. So we handed her the microphone. In this episode of Laugh Lines, Lola shares everything she wishes she'd known before moving into her dorm - from making friends in those first overwhelming weeks to building good study habits, surviving finals, handling competitive clubs, and why you definitely do NOT need twenty athletic tops (I would like the record to show I tried to say this while we were packing). We also asked Lola your questions from Instagram about homesickness, roommates, calling your parents, transferring schools, ADHD organization, dorm must-haves, and what actually matters when you're preparing for college.Whether you're sending your first kid to college, heading there yourself, or just wondering how someone can get hit by a car and still make it to a meeting on time (yes, that happened), we hope this conversation makes the whole transition feel a little less scary. If you have more college questions, let us know - we may have to bring Lola back for another round. We love to hear from you! This week on Laugh Lines, I learned two things about myself: I'm deeply triggered by people yelling at graduation ceremonies and I'm officially old enough to be attacked by Love Island. I also learned that I seriously dislike the phrase "that's the way it is" and feel it needs to be banned immediately.Penn and I cover a lot of important topics from our couch this week, including: Our week without air conditioning, "Gen X revenge" involving a dumpster, and what it's like having a son away in France for 3 weeks. We also spend way more time discussing bidets than any respectable podcast should. Thanks for being here with us... let us know if you're Team Hoot & Holler or Team Follow the Rules, if you're saying yes to more things as you are getting older, and if you unpack immediately or live out of your suitcase. This week on Laugh Lines, we're making a strong case that the Running Man may be more powerful than we ever realized. After reading a fascinating study on dancing and brain health, I convinced Penn to join me for one of my dance classes to see if shaking it off could help keep cognitive decline at bay. What followed was a reminder that Gen X may have one competitive advantage over younger generations: We absolutely crush the Running Man. (Why can't Gen Z do this?!)We talk about the surprising importance of community as we get older, and why getting outside your comfort zone never becomes easy, and we share what we learned speaking to a group of lifelong learners. Plus, we dig through some classic Gen X relics from our attic, including a Trapper Keeper, boombox, globes, metal lunch box, and flip phones. Along the way, Penn debuts options for an Alzheimer's jingle, we discuss a meteorite over Martha's Vineyard, and I continue my quest to get more than one-word text messages from our son on a foreign exchange student trip. Dust off your best Running Man, and join us for a conversation about staying curious, connected, and (hopefully) mentally sharp. We love to hear from you! Easing the mental load, minimizing the to-do list, letting go of the things that don't really matter is a constant work in progress for me – but when I'm in the throes of it all, I often think “there's got to be a better way”. I've invited Sam Bennett, creativity/productivity specialist, to join us to share her 15-minute method with all of us. Sam is the author of the bestselling book Get It Done as well as Start Right Where You Are: How Little Changes Can Make a Big Difference for Overwhelmed Procrastinators, Frustrated Overachievers, and Recovering Perfectionists. Her latest book is called The 15-Minute Method: The Surprisingly Simple Art of Getting It Done. Having spent most of her life working as a professional actor and improvisor, Sam brings a quick wit to her writing and her work as a top instructor on LinkedIn Learning with over a million “learners” worldwide. It will all get narrowed down to those very few things that matter most at the end, so what are we waiting for? Someone else to decide what truly matters for us? A point in time where things all of a sudden get easy and simple? No, we get to decide. And like so many things worth doing, we start small, one step at a time, 15 minutes devoted to what matters most to you. Thank you to our sponsors! Ever found yourself stuck in the paralysis of too many choices? This week, we're joined by Shawn Johnson East and Andrew East to talk about their new book, Courage to Commit. Yes, Shawn is an Olympic gold medalist. Yes, Andrew played in the NFL. And while they are both super talented and successful, their lives have taken commitment and work.We live in a world that constantly tells us to keep our options open. But when you choose something, whether it's a relationship, a career path, a healthy habit, or even a workout routine, it can actually bring more peace and less anxiety. Shawn and Andrew share stories from marriage, parenting, athletics, and business, including the lessons they've learned from sticking with hard things and the mistakes they've made along the way. (Plus, Penn learns more about presidential biographies than he ever wanted to.) If you're feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or just need a reminder that growth usually happens one small commitment at a time, I think you'll really enjoy this one. We love to hear from you! When a visit to a memory care facility turns into a brainstorming session for the ultimate Gen X Retirement Home "in the year of our lord Dolly Parton 2026"... This week on Laugh Lines, Penn and I reflect on a visit with his mom and find ourselves imagining a future filled with Oregon Trail reenactments, Running Man lessons, prank calls, and Pantera during music hour. We talk about the surprising connection between music and memory, why laughter and grief often show up together, and what we'd want waiting for us in our own retirement community. We also dive into a conversation about aging after someone on the internet suggested my eyebrows needed help. That leads to a bigger discussion about beauty standards, the pressure women feel to age "correctly," and why it's so hard to stop caring what other people think. We also explore women supporting women, the loneliness epidemic among men, and what healthy community and connection might look like for all of us. Plus a walk down memory lane with Mr. Microphone, if we should do a psychic podcast, and more Gen X nostalgia. Laugh Liners, don't forget your homework assignments! We love to hear from you! This week, Penn and I are back from vacation and sharing our biggest realizations… including why people who travel with carry-on luggage only might actually be in a cult (but after losing our luggage twice in one trip, we are joining it!) We take official carry-on vows, talk about why you should never have a massage if you think you might crap your pants, and we time travel with music from scrubbing grout on Saturday mornings with Chuck Mangione and to the orthodontist chair with The Alan Parsons Project. (Send us your time travel songs!)We also unpack hearing tests, first class passenger behavior, and why lesbians may be the last remaining defenders of the compact disc. This episode is equal parts chaotic travel reflections, childhood therapy session, and a digestive emergency cautionary tale. (And to the man who proudly knew the Laugh Lines phone number by heart at Jen Hamilton's book event… this is your official invitation to call in and do the credits next episode. We're still impressed.) We love to hear from you! Leave us a message at 323-364-3929 or write the show at podcast@theholdernessfamily.com. This week on Laugh Lines, we invited two of the funniest dads on the internet to join us. We interview Dave Ogleton (@fitdadceo) - the viral King of Dad Jokes and author of So Dad It's Good. And we also talk to Chip Leighton (@the_leighton_show) - the viral creator behind those hilariously confusing teen text exchanges and author of Dad, Can You Not? Dave and Chip help us answer life's biggest parenting questions. Questions like: Does every Dad start laughing before he tells a joke? Is cringe a love language? What time is noon? And can Penn survive a dad joke competition with a professional internet dad? (Results were… humbling.)We laugh our way through your Laugh Line teen texts, accidental family catchphrases (Nana Fell LOL) and the realization that every parent in America is apparently raising the exact same child. We also discuss why your teenager asking you dumb questions and rolling their eyes at your jokes might actually be their weird way of staying connected. This week is funny, painfully relatable, and hopefully makes you feel a little better about this whole parenting thing. (And please enjoy Penn's experimental "thunderpants" joke...) I just got back from three days in New Haven at the 17th Digital Insiders mastermind — 40 entrepreneurs in one room, and somehow these events keep getting better than the last one. In this episode I walk you through the keynote from Michael Roderick on aspirational vs. excellence buyers, the member shares from Emily Green on $15 paid workshops, Amber Housley on the 34 webinars it took before hers converted, Aryeh Sheinbein on a deeply personal credit card story, and Brittany Long on delivering a full done-for-you funnel in 60 minutes using Claude. From there I get into my halftime report on what's still working in 2026, the Three Overs framework I taught on day two, and the Get It Done day where we built AI-powered daily sales rituals — and watched the most skeptical person in the room close a $1,200 sale within 60 minutes of building hers. By the end of three days, three themes kept showing up: discomfort is the price of growth, AI is infrastructure not a project, and being in a room with the right people compounds everything else. If you've ever wondered what a real mastermind is actually supposed to do for your business — or you want to hear how I'm bringing some of this work to my farm this summer with two-day workshops called AI and Sheep — this is the episode for you.
