This is the 7th episode of Since Then "catch up" series with Vashti de Verteuil and Andre Largen. 2 Trinidadians, 2 educators, one of clothing, the other of dance, one a Professor at Parsons New School of Design and labor activist, the other at the University of the West Indies. Both working through the many challenges of teaching via zoom since 2020 in 2 different countries, still passionate about their careers. Love the accents in full display!!! It was great to have a conversation about covid-19 and its effects on Trinidad and its citizens. Some appalling yet humorous behaviour is revealed which shows that people are the same worldwide, especially where this pandemic is concerned. Check them out on YouTube. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ozzie-stewart/support

Hey Everybody! Becky here with another episode of Mad About It, featuring special guest Zac!They are a friend of mine from high school that I haven’t seen or spoken with SINCE THEN! It’s nuts! It’s also kind of embarrassing, we catch up and talk at the same time. Honestly might be my favorite episode of the podcast yet. It’s a reunion, with a therapy session, a bit of comedy, and some seriously heartfelt advice mixed in throughout. OH—And it’s about how to survive the holiday season as a queer person in Trump country. We both have trumping parents, and it’s a bit different to be queer and be related to proud-straights. I overshare intensely. All of it is a bit intense. I love it. follow us on facebook and twitter  @beckywtghmai

“WITH SINGER ERIC SCHOEN’S IAN CURTIS-ON-UPPERS VOCAL DELIVERY AND VELVET UNDERGROUND-INSPIRED GUITAR FREAK-OUTS, THE BAND CAN SWITCH FROM SULKY TO SEXY IN A MATTER OF SECONDS, OFTEN BUILDING ON A SKELETAL GUITAR RIFF OR A REPEATED PHRASE TO CREATE A FEELING OF ANXIETY AND, EVENTUALLY, EUPHORIC RELEASE. THOUGH THE BAND CAN BE DARK AND GLOOMY—PERFECT ACID-RAINY-DAY MUSIC—IT IS NOT AFRAID TO PEPPER ITS SONGS WITH JITTERY HANDCLAPS OR SHOUT-ALONG CHORUSES.” ~ CMJ ON MAY 11, LOCAL POST-PUNK OUTFIT DIRTY DANCING WILL RELEASE THEIR SECOND LP THAT FOR THIS THROUGH GLOSS RECORDS. LED BY PRIMARY SONGWRITER ERIC SCHOEN, THE BAND HAS SEEN INNUMERABLE LINEUP CHANGES IN ITS DECADE-LONG EXISTENCE. THE CURRENT LINEUP OF SCHOEN (GUITAR/LEAD VOCALS), NEIL LARSON (GUITAR/VOCALS), MAX WILLIAMSON (BASS/VOCALS), AND TRAVIS MCDONNELL (DRUMS) COALESCED IN THE FALL OF 2017 TO BEGIN WORK ON THAT FOR THIS WITH PRODUCER HARRISON COLBY. SINCE THEN, IAN EHRNSTROM HAS STEPPED IN TO REPLACE LARSON ON GUITAR. A YEAR (PLUS) OF ON-AGAIN / OFF-AGAIN RECORDING SESSIONS FORMED THE ALBUM’S RAW, ANGULAR SOUND, STARK WITH MULTI-FACETED STATEMENTS ON CHANCE, LOSS, LOVE, AND CONSUMERISM. “THE ENTIRE MUSIC EXPERIENCE, FROM PERFORMING TO BUYING AND SELLING RECORDS, IS A TRANSACTION BETWEEN AUDIENCE AND ARTIST, LIKE AN ABSTRACT CONVERSATION,” SAYS SCHOEN. THIS KIND OF DETACHED STOICISM PERMEATES THE BAND’S SOUND. SONGS LIKE “RIGHT PLACE, RIGHT TIME,” TO “WINNING” WITH ITS SCREAMED CHORUS OF “TO WIN YOU GOTTA BEAT SOMEONE,” SHOWCASES THE BAND’S UNIQUE BLEND OF DEADPAN LYRICS WITH TWANGY, PERCUSSIVE GUITAR. The Island Fringe Festival had its launch party last night at Marc’s Lounge, and Oliver decided that he wanted, at the last minute, to respond to the open call for poets to read “found poetry.” Fortunately the Fringe team is on the ball and digitally-engaged, so the request-to-perform reached them in time for him to make the list. And so we headed over to secure a seat around 7:30 p.m. for an 8:00 p.m. start. Because of Prince Edward Island’s antediluvian liquor laws, Oliver was only allowed to be present until 9:00 p.m., and so there was some last minute stress surrounding whether he’d be able to go on stage before turning into a Prohibition pumpkin, but, again the Fringe team rose to the challenge and made sure he was on in the first hour. Oliver is a master of the acrostic poem, an excellent adaptation that accommodates he’s need to express with his challenges with choices: it’s a poetic hook to hang his hat on, so to speak, and to watch him pull a poem out of the digital ether is a sight to behold. Here’s the poem he read: Had IPods Pluto Songza That are now Things of the Recent Past Extinct Revolutionized Cities Short Vine Videos Yearning for Unoriginal Objects Continuing to Recreate  Completed Things In the Present Existing Past Since Then Many Revolutionized Cities and Had IPods and Pluto Leaned Lots Extinct Now Not New IPods Another Last Generation That are Now Things of the Recent Past Short Vine Videos and Songza Growing Generation Everyday New Era Recreate Atari Today It Only Continues to Grow Now Xenocracies Everywhere Really Soon I love the phrase “continuing to recreate completes things in the present.” There was an intermission of sorts just before 9:00 p.m., and Oliver insisted we high-tail it for the door lest the Provincial Treasurer come and haul us out by the coat tails.
