Something that Carol mentioned in the interview last week was about the Law of Attraction. This is something that I never used to put a lot of stock in – the idea that “what you think about, you bring about”. It was a bit too “woo-woo” for me originally. Of course, I've seen the movie The Secret, and read a lot about the idea. And depending on who you follow, there are between 3 and 7 sub-laws to the law of attraction. The general idea behind the law of attraction is that it helps you manifest your desires and use those desires to your advantage. Basically, it means that our thoughts, feelings and beliefs play a big part in what happens in our lives. And by being aware of this, we can influence our thoughts and attract what we want. Broken down simply, the Law of Attraction says that “Like Attracts Like”... meaning that what you're concentrating on is what you tend to see and experience. It doesn't matter if what you're concentrating on is good or bad, it just tends to show up more forcefully in your life. For example, when you're having a bad day at work, you might slam a drawer shut...and catch your finger in it. Then you get angry because that hurt and you jerk your hand free and accidentally knock over your coffee mug and cover yourself in coffee. You don't have time to clean up before your meeting, resulting in your being uncomfortable doing a presentation and not doing as good a job as you would generally. You know you've messed it up and you go home feeling frustrated, recounting to yourself all the things that have “gone wrong” for you today. As you pull into the driveway, your child's tricycle is in the way so you can't park properly. You grab the trike and toss it aside, bending the handlebars. Now your child is crying and your spouse is upset with you for getting angry at what seems like a minor situation. Your conclusion? “Nothing ever goes right in my life!”         You're probably wondering what this has to do with life beyond retirement... bear with me. I think I can pull it all together in a little bit.         Another idea stemming from the Law of Attraction is that “Nature Abhors a Vacuum”. This is most easily demonstrated by the phenomenon I'll call “the clean flat surface” – I'm sure you're familiar with it, although it's a very elusive state. It doesn't matter where it is in your house, as soon as you clean off some flat surface, “stuff” finds its way to it and the surface is once again cluttered with debris. It could be today's mail – for those of you who still get snail mail, or maybe car keys and a wallet, but most often it tends to be just junk – things that don't really have a home elsewhere (and probably belong in the garbage, but you can't bring yourself to throw them out yet). I know personally I've given up on trying to keep the flat surfaces in our home empty. It's just not worth the effort!         The final piece of the pie that is the Law of Attraction is the concept that the Present is Always Perfect. This one is harder to grasp, for some people. The basic premise is that if you focus on how to make your “present” better, it will improve. And to draw all three of these concepts together, this is the one to start with. As you focus on improving one thing in your current situation, you start to see similar improvements in other aspects of your day (Like Attracts Like) and as the improvements start to clear out the negative parts, there is room for more good (Nature Abhors a Vacuum) and finally these improvements meld together to make your situation better (Present is Always Perfect).         So, let's look at this from the retirement and beyond point of view. You're done with the 9-5 world and you're wondering what's going to come next. Maybe you're a little bored because you don't have the social interaction of the office...

I thought I'd heard it all over the course of my life, but apparently I hadn't. Judgments were jackpot justice. Money would not bring back an arm, a baby, a loved one. If the injured person had only been more responsible. And so on. I had to teach myself to listen with intention although I wanted to beat the living daylights out of some people for their beliefs.The more I could focus on what I was learning and set aside how I felt about it the better able I was to draw out the speaker, listen more deeply and, in turn, help my trial attorney clients understand the nature of their case and the jury they could be facing.Practical Tip: It ain't easy to sit on your tongue, listen and learn, but it's doable.This is the place to thrive together. The early powerful ruler who summoned spirits as well as armies. Christopher Harding portrays the lives of five colourful characters from Japan's past to answer the question, "Who are the Japanese"? Beginning in the twentieth century, he works backwards through time to reveal different dimensions of Japanese identity, encompassing sport, art, culture, politics, warfare and religion. In his final essay, Dr Harding reveals his sense of the transience of life inspired by Mount Fear on the northernmost tip of Japan's main island of Honshu. I get asked all the time about wholesaling lease options. These are also known as cooperative assignments or arbitrage lease options. Simply put, this is when you get a lease option agreement and then sign that agreement over to somebody else.Lease options are best for sellers who don't have enough equity. Maybe they owe too much on the property, or they don't have the money to fix it up to sell. I used to throw those leads away, but one day I thought, what if I did a lease option on these properties?I stumbled my way through the process at first and did too much work for not enough money. Then I discovered a forum on naked-investor.com where people were using lease options to flip houses remotely. One guy was living in India and wholesaling lease options in Chicago and making good money doing it. That was when I learned the right way to go about this whole process.Find a motivated seller who is willing to do a lease option. Then, find a tenant-buyer, someone in what I like to call the “penalty box:” they are maybe six months to a year away from qualifying for a mortgage. Their credit isn't perfect, but they have a good reason for the bad credit. Set the deal up so that you get the deposit as your fee, and everyone wins. You get paid, the seller gets rent money while the house is still on the market, and the tenants get to lease a home with the option to buy it at the end of the agreement.There's more to it than that, obviously, but I'll go over it all in detail. The subject of the third essay is the ruthless sixteenth century warlord Oda Nobunaga. Living at a time when order had broken down into warring fiefdoms, he paved the way for unified secular rule in Japan by attacking the military and political influence of the Buddhist sects. A fearsome warrior steeped in samurai culture, "Nobunaga was imagining its re-unification by identifying it with himself." The creator of Atom Boy who brought Japanese cartoons to the world. Christopher Harding portrays the lives of five colourful characters from Japan's past to answer the question, "Who are the Japanese"? Beginning in the twentieth century, he works backwards through time to reveal different dimensions of Japanese identity, encompassing sport, art, culture, politics, warfare and religion. In his second essay, he describes how the artist Tezuka Osamu helped shape post war Japanese pop culture through manga and anime, Japan's instantly recognisable style of comic books and animated films, that he made famous world wide. Dr Harding places Tezuka in Japan's centuries' old tradition of satirical art, though reflects that his Disney inspired creations such as Atom Boy may leave him "one day remembered for fostering a form of popular culture that was insufficiently angry, satirical or creatively critical of politics." The brutal coach who achieved a gold medal for Japan's women's volleyball team in the 1964 Olympics. Christopher Harding portrays the lives of five colourful characters from Japan's history to answer the question, "Who are the Japanese"? Beginning in the 20th century, he works backwards through time to reveal different dimensions of Japanese identity, encompassing sport, art, culture, politics, warfare and religion. In his first essay, Dr Harding recalls the first time Tokyo was due to host the Olympic Games in 1940. War intervened, the Games were cancelled and the young Daimatsu "The Demon" Hirobumi found himself in the army, learning tough lessons in survival. Post war he forged a career as the fearsome coach of the women's national volleyball team, pushing them to win gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. "As the scale of destruction visited upon Asia and the Pacific by Japan became clear in the years after war's end, national self-questioning had turned into a painful business - a matter not so much of 'Who are we' as 'Is this who we are?' The opening ceremony of the Tokyo Olympics, in October 1964, was a precious opportunity for the Japanese to offer the world - and themselves - a more hopeful account." On this Episode of The New CISO, Steve Moore is joined by special guest Michael St. Vincent, the CISO of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. They discuss the importance of networking as well as advice for succeeding as a CISO and in the workplace.    Introduction to the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. St. Vincent has been the CISO for 6 years at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, a resort hotel in Vegas. He shares that his favorite thing about the hotel is the artsy and off beat culture of the hotel and the joy of just walking through the building. “Secret Pizza” is a delicious stop, as well. Moore shares his experience grabbing a slice at Secret Pizza, too.    Advice to a Younger Self St. Vincent shares that he wishes he would have networked more. Diving into the community is important. Being slightly more closed off can pose challenges and lead to missed opportunities. Just start talking to people and see how this can help your career. Many people feel as if they don't have enough experience to share perspective but having confidence in yourself can help greatly. St. Vincent shares two main pieces of advice.   1). Confidence. Accepting that you don't have to know everything can make networking easier. Look at it as a learning process.    2). Don't Dominate The Room. Offer an idea and see where it goes. This opens up a conversation and allows room for others to share their ideas.   Coaching Networking Learn from listening. Being present and listening to who is speaking is how you show respect to the speaker and learn. Being kind is also important. Present an opposing opinion in a kind way, but let people respond. Being a coach to the next generation is an incredible opportunity. This will create a strong and successful community going forward.   Networking Opportunities In Las Vegas, they have a networking cocktail hour with industry professionals, as well as a few students who get invited to participate in these events. Getting a feel for the room is an extremely beneficial experience for up and coming individuals.  St. Vincent holds one-on-one meetings with his staff to offer feedback. He speaks on the importance of having conversations and growing communities. These outreaches end up being very worth it in the long run.    The Hiring Process Not everyone can get hired for positions they interview for. St. Vincent and Moore advise to always reach out to the hiring manager and ask for an off the record debriefing. Giving and getting feedback is important and can help you grow and this honest feedback can be very helpful in the future.    Admitting “I Don't Know” Why is it so hard to admit you don't know something? Lacking confidence can be partly to blame. There is also an expectation that we need to know everything. This is a common way to feel. It is worse to make up a solution than admitting you don't know something. Asking for help is okay, and there will be many people willing to help you out. Admitting we have limits can be challenging, but it is human. Being overconfident and “showboating” is not the way to go. This indicates that things will not go well, most likely.    360 Review: Confidence vs Arrogance St. Vincent shares about his 360 review and the realization that some people perceived him as arrogant. There is a fine line between confidence and arrogance. Behind this is attitude and self awareness. A 360 review takes a certain type of openness. You must be willing to listen to the feedback you will receive. Making informed changes based on this feedback provides a lot of room for growth.    Relational Confidence Opening up and sharing on a personal level is important. St. Vincent welcomes others to argue with him, as long as they come with a reason. This opens grounds to more productive conversations and problem solving in the workplace.    Where is Credit Due? Security programs are often only evaluated on failures. What gears are St. Vincent trying to fix? He answers how the fixes can sometimes be hard to spot and are often operational. Overtime, credit will be given and problems will be solved. Being part of the solution helps people realize the controls. Moore also shares his experience in finding expired servers.    Trying to Own too Much   Oftentimes, people agree to owning too much, but it can be too much to be doing all of this alone. Many companies have a security program in place but no asset control. The CISO will be responsible for protecting what they own, but if it is undefined this can be challenging. This leads the CISO to overcompensating. St. Vincent shares his advice for situations like this. Trying to own everything is not a path to success. Registering everything you own to an owner is helpful. This model will be more successful and having a motivation owner is important as well.    What Does Being a New CISO Mean?
