Part 2 - Stanley Jacobs and Edgie Christian of the TSK band join Neville James as they discuss the upcoming Crucian Christmas Serenade, scratch music, quelbe and music in the Virgin Islands.
On a visit to the U.S. Virgin Islands in winter 2018, we took the pulse of the national music of St. Croix – quelbe. Rarely recorded, rarely exported, quelbe is an energetic form, led by sax or flute with percussion and banjo, and it fuels the traditional dance style, quadrille. St Croix is the largest of the U.S. Virgin Islands, and sits alone 42 miles south of St. Thomas and St. John. That's part of why traditional music and dance forms have remained strong on St. Croix. Meet bandleaders Stanley Jacobs of Stanley and the 10 Sleepless Knights, and Dmitri Copemann of the Renaissance Band, who are cultivating a vibrant next generation. Produced by Marika Partridge and Banning Eyre. APWW #782 Originally produced in 2018

An entertaining, enlightening and fun BEHIND THE LENS with producer/talent manager BYRON BEANE in town from NY to co-pilot the show. And what a show! Always a delight to have Byron on board, his industry expertise as a producer and talent manager adds a great dynamic to every interview and discussion and does so with this episode. Joining us live at the mid-point of the show is STANLEY JACOBS, writer/director/producer and jack-of-all-trades of 96 SOULS! Filmmakers will appreciate hearing what Stanley has to say about his filmmaking process, putting out a quality film with a very minimal budget, casting a film without benefit of a casting agent and some resources to aid you, the visual design and benefits of the Red Dragon camera and Leica lens for in-camera visual effects, plus things he learned that will change his approach in the future. Also, hilarity ensues as we hear clips of Kevin Hart, Thomas Middleditch and Ed Helms as they chime in at the recent press conference about CAPTAIN UNDERPANTS: THE FIRST EPIC MOVIE. It's official!!! The show goes live on the air Saturday, September 27, 2014, at 12:00 noon EST/AST! It will continue at 12:00 noon each and every Saturday. So get your questions ready and call-in during the show. A new talk show with a focus on the old times of the US Virgin Islands with no other that my childhood buddy and fellow-Boy Scout, Dr. Leonard Richardson. Called "The Walking Encyclopedia", Dr. Richardson will take you down Memory Lane and engage you to dates, places, and people, past and present, on St. Thomas, the Virgin Islands, and the Caribbean. Nothing is too far-fetched for the Doc., whether it be linguistics, local flora and fauna, local dishes, old-time remedies, and much more. Come, join in the fun! Call-in with your questions and comments! Attempt to fool him! To give you a running start, I'm going to let you have the call-in number in advance. It's (347) 237-4374 Note: Quelbe ("kwell bay") music is the official music of the Virgin Islands and Stanley (on flute) and his band, Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights (TSK), are the Kings of Quelbe. Also called "scratch" or "fungi", quelbe is a form of folk story and is the real deal when it comes to island music. The quadrille dancers turn out when Stanley and TSK are playing. The combination of his music and the costumed dancers are just great to watch. Mr. Stanley has graciously granted us permission to play his song, "General Buddhoe" as our theme song. Contact Stanley by mail at Stanley Jacobs, PO Box 411, Christiansted, St. Croix, VI 00821 * Telephone: 340-773-2378. Be sure to view TSK on YouTube.
