In 1997, a magazine crowned a triathlete "the fittest man on Earth." This article argues he wasn't even close. What Is Fitness? (Part 1) is where CrossFit builds its actual definition of fitness using four different models, from the 10 physical skills to the sickness-wellness-fitness continuum. We're going live to break it down with CrossFit Level 4 (CF-L4) coaches Todd Occhiuto and Kristin Bowen. This series is for aspiring coaches getting ready for their CrossFit Level 1, and for current coaches who want to get better at what they already do.In this episode we unpack the four models CrossFit uses to measure fitness, the three metabolic pathways, and why "fit" and "healthy" are the same thing on one continuum.--▶️ Watch the full series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLDJlFCSlzXko
In Foundations, the oldest article in the CrossFit Level 1 Training Guide, Coach Glassman lays out the case for what fitness actually is and why the marathoner, the powerlifter, and the bodybuilder are all missing it.We're going live to break it down with CrossFit Level 4 (CF-L4) coaches Todd Occhiuto and Kristin Bowen. This series is for aspiring coaches getting ready for their CrossFit Level 1, and for current coaches who want to get better at what they already do.In this episode we unpack the 10 fitness domains, why your grandmother and an Olympic athlete need the same training (differing by degree, not kind), and the "fringe athlete" argument that still starts fights in comment sections today.--

How to become a better CrossFit coach starts with one resource: the CrossFit Level 1 Training Guide. We're going live to break it down with CrossFit Level 4 (CF-L4) coaches Todd Occhiuto and Kristin Bowen. This series is for aspiring coaches getting ready for their CrossFit Level 1, and for current coaches who want to get better at what they already do.In this first episode, we go back to the start of the guide and unpack what most people skim past: the actual aim of CrossFit, the prescription, and the methodology behind it.---
For so many women, the word "metabolism" has become tied to frustration, body shame, and the feeling that something must be wrong with them. You try to eat less, move more, push harder, and still feel like your body is not responding the way you hoped it would. Metabolism gets talked about constantly, but almost never explained correctly. But what if your body is not fighting against you at all, and has actually been trying to protect you this entire time? In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Alyssa Olenick. She holds a PhD in Exercise Physiology, is a certified sports nutritionist, and a CrossFit Level 2 Trainer whose entire research background is rooted in metabolism and metabolic health. She is also a competitive strength athlete and ultramarathon runner who trains the way she teaches. What she brings to this conversation is the kind of clarity around women's health, strength training, and cardiovascular fitness that most women never get access to from a single source. In this episode, you will discover: The part of metabolic health that has nothing to do with calories or weight What most women are never told about how resistance training actually works in the body What your fitness level actually signals about your long term women's health Why endurance training and strength training are not interchangeable, and why that distinction matters How hybrid training fits into a real schedule without overhauling everything you are already doing What cardio workout routines are actually building in your body over time Where athletic performance fits in even if you have never thought of yourself as an athlete This conversation is grounded in science but written for real life, and it meets you exactly where you are with your body and your health. The science of how your body works is not as complicated as it has been made out to be, and this episode shows exactly why. Let's rebrand wellness together! This week's guest would like to apologize. Like many of us before perimenopause hit, Shawna Norton admits she used to quietly doubt—even judge—women who said their bodies changed overnight despite doing nothing differently. Then it happened to her. Now she gets it. And she's genuinely sorry. In this wide-ranging, sometimes raucous, and brutally honest conversation, we dig into her own experience with rapid weight gain, joint pain, brain fog, and the unsettling feeling of living in a body that suddenly feels unfamiliar. We talk cortisol, stress resilience, inflammation, blood sugar management, the complexities of HRT, sleep strategies, and the emotional whiplash of navigating so many unknowns at once. Most of all, we talk about validation—because sometimes the most powerful thing you can hear in this chaotic time of life is: you're not alone.Shawna Norton, M.S., is a kinesiology specialist, strength coach, and nutrition coach dedicated to helping women build resilient, high-performing bodies. She holds a Master of Science in Kinesiology and is a CrossFit Level 1 Trainer as well as a Level 1 Certified Nutrition Coach through Precision Nutrition. Shawna is the founder of Competitive Female Training, a women-only coaching program where she guides athletes in fueling their training, optimizing performance, and focusing on what their bodies can do. She also coaches with Deep End Fitness, integrating stress-resilience and breath-driven performance strategies into athletic development. This week we welcome back our resident reproductive endocrinologist and menopause specialist, Dr. Carla DiGirolamo, for another candid conversation. We pull back the curtain on Carla's own menopause experience—how she navigates her symptoms, what she's learned, and what she practices herself. We also dig into the hard conversations so many of us are having as we navigate this ever-evolving space, and how years of working closely with active midlife women have shaped her thinking on hormone therapy, GLP-1 medications, testosterone, hormone testing, and what actually moves the needle for athletic women in the transition.Carla DiGirolamo, MD, PhD, is a Double Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and Obstetrician/Gynecologist specializing in women's performance and menopausal medicine. In this episode, James discusses Miguel's experiences in taking the CrossFit Level 2 Trainer's Course.
As active women, muscle is the engine that powers us through our lives, no matter what sport we love. When we hit midlife and menopause, it can feel like that 8-cylinder engine drops to six—less punch when we hit the gas, even though we're still training. We may notice less muscle and more body fat when we look in the mirror. Muscle and strength loss during the menopause transition is multifactorial. It's hormonal changes and estrogen decline. It's inflammation. It's symptoms like poor sleep, joint pain, and fatigue. It's body fat gain. It's how we recover and fuel. And, of course, it's aging itself, as both women and men lose muscle with age. Our approach to making and maintaining it has to be multifactorial as well. This week we talk all about muscle and menopause–from basic science to menopause symptoms to hormone therapy–to understand what's going on under the hood and help keep that engine strong.Carla DiGirolamo, MD, PhD, is a Double Board Certified Reproductive Endocrinologist and Obstetrician/Gynecologist specializing in infertility and menopausal medicine.
