In this episode, an Air Atlanta Boeing 747 departs from JFK, headed for Liege, Belgium with some precious cargo. It's very common for top competition horses to be shipped by air between the United States and Europe. While in transit, these animals are placed in compact horse stalls and cared for by highly trained equine professionals to ensure their safety. In this wild clip, a horse actually escaped from the stall after take off and the equine flight attendant couldn't re-secure the animal. The pilot, radios the tower at JFK to return so the situation doesn't escalate. Shipping horses internationally can be a costly, dangerous activity and even requires special insurance due to its risky nature. Refugees are running from something. Starvation, oppression, persecution, floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, forest fires, war — the list is long. More than once God's people found themselves running away from danger. God's refugee people became expert escapologist - some of the time. However, at others they suffered from not heeding the warnings. What relevance does this have for our relationship with God? God's people ran away from danger We could explore Noah running from the flood or Abraham running from famine, but we will concentrate on the flight from Egypt. The exodus was an escape. In a hurry. Even their captors urged them to get on with it, “The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. “For otherwise,” they said, “we will all die!”” (Exodus 12:33 NIV11) God rescued his people from slavery, idolatry and a context in which they were in danger of being assimilated by the prevailing culture. He carried them to safety, “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.” (Exodus 19:4 NIV11) We have been redeemed, restored and rescued. We have been carried from darkness to light. It is worth reflecting on the urgency of that escape to help us with conviction for today. Run away — as fast as possible Israel's track-record of avoiding spiritual danger is patchy. The exile proves that. A Christian is no less vulnerable. The price of freedom can be forgotten. Freedom can be abused, “…do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh; rather, serve one another humbly in love.” (Galatians 5:13 NIV11) One of the reasons we have regular devotional times with God is to keep our spiritual early-warning systems on alert. We need to heed what Paul said to the Corinthians, “Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a person commits are outside the body, but whoever sins sexually, sins against their own body. Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honour God with your bodies.” (1 Corinthians 6:18-20 NIV11) Lot dawdled when he should have been running, “Look, here is a town near enough to run to, and it is small. Let me flee to it—it is very small, isn't it? Then my life will be spared.”” (Genesis 19:20 NIV11) Why not spend some time in prayer asking God to make you alert for the moments when you need to flee?  Please add your comments on this week's topic. Formerly escaped inmate Naseem Roulack was captured Wednesday morning by the U.S. Marshals Service and Fairfax County Police Department. Virginia Department of Corrections Director Chadwick Dotson released the following statement after Roulack's capture: "I want to thank the U.S. Marshals Service, Virginia State Police, Fairfax County Police Department and other local, state and federal law enforcement partners for their tireless efforts assisting the VADOC's Investigators and Officers in the effort to recapture this inmate." 21-year-old Roulack had been on the run since Saturday, August 12, when he escaped from St. Mary's Hospital in Henrico County. At the height of the Civil War in November 1864, nine Union prisoners-of-war escaped from a Confederate Prison known as Camp Sorghum in Columbia, South Carolina. They scrambled north on foot in rags that had once been uniforms of blue. Traveling in brutal winter conditions more than 300 miles with search parties and bloodhounds hot on their trail. On the difficult journey they relied on the help of enslaved men and women, as well as Southerners who sympathized with the North, before finally reaching Union lines on New Years Day 1865.After arriving in Knoxville, Tennessee, and checking in with Union authorities, one of the men had a wonderful idea. The nine officers and their three mountain guides found a local photographer, hoping to commemorate what they had accomplished by posing together for a photograph. The instant, frozen in time, showed twelve ragged men with determination strong on their faces. It was a Civil War selfie. A moment that Captured Freedom.Steve Procko, a documentarian, received a copy of the more than 150-year-old photograph from a descendant of one of the mountain guides. Upon identifying and researching the men in the photograph, he realized their remarkable story had never been told. Procko is today's guest, and he's here to tell the story. On August 31st 2023, 34-year-old convict Danelo Cavalcante escaped Pennsylvania's Chester County Prison by crab-walking between two walls, pushing through razor wire, and fleeing from the roof. For two weeks, Pennsylvania residents lived in fear as authorities worked tirelessly to track down the escaped convict. Cavalcante had been convicted of murdering his girlfriend in 2021 and was wanted in Brazil for a 2017 killing. Finally, on September 13th, Cavalcante was apprehended by Pennsylvania State Police and a Border Patrol tactical unit.
