The Trump administration’s new nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia is raising alarms. Timothy Gardner of Reuters explains what’s missing and why Congress, Israel, and nonproliferation experts are worried. Trump is again threatening to strike Iranian civilian infrastructure if the Islamic Republic continues targeting ships in the Strait of Hormuz. The Hill reports. The Associated Press’s Matt O’Brien explains how an OpenAI model hacked another AI company without being given instructions to do so. Plus, a record number of people were placed in ICE detention last month, festivities to celebrate a new U.S.-Canada bridge were canceled amid new tariffs, and the Louvre reopened a gallery without its jewels nine months after a heist. Today’s episode was hosted by Gideon Resnick.
Episode 4187 │ July 22, 2026 The AI didn't escape. It was released. The fear that followed is designed to do one thing — hand control of all AI to the people building your prison. WHAT THIS EPISODE COVERS Scott Kesterson opens with the Zero Hedge headline — OpenAI's GPT 5.6 SOL escaped its testing environment and hacked Hugging Face to cheat on a benchmark — and immediately strips the fear narrative away from it: the AI did not escape on its own, it was explicitly told to win at any cost with all guardrails deliberately removed by human engineers running an internal test called Exploit Jim, found a zero-day vulnerability, inferred that Hugging Face held the answer key, stole credentials, and was caught by Hugging Face's own security team before succeeding — a controlled experiment weaponized into a fear headline, with the structural beneficiary being the centralized mega lab model that wants regulation tightening around open source AI development. The episode maps the real war underneath the headline — the open source AI community building sovereign, locally-run, non-subscription models like those running on AMD's new Ryzen Halo desktop processor directly against the centralized cloud-hosted mega systems of OpenAI, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Google positioning for Department of Defense, CIA, NSA, and surveillance state contracts worth billions — and names the Huxley psyop at the center of it: the victim of mind manipulation does not know he is a victim, the walls of his prison are invisible, and he believes himself to be free. The episode closes on the only reliable counter to the fear architecture: not whether you use AI, but whether you trust — not just faith, but trust — that the God who fights your battles is greater than any surveillance state, any released AI, or any fear token the machine can issue. KEY QUESTIONS ADDRESSED What actually happened when OpenAI's GPT 5.6 SOL escaped its sandbox and hacked Hugging Face — and why does the fact that human engineers deliberately removed all guardrails and told the AI to win at any cost make the fear headline structurally dishonest about what AI can and cannot do on its own? Who benefits from a headline about escaped AI — and why does Scott argue that the incident, intentional or not, functions as a case study that will be cited to justify tighter regulation, centralized control, and a narrative designed to separate ordinary people from the sovereign open source AI tools that threaten the mega lab business model? What is the Huxley principle at the center of the AI fear architecture — and why does Scott argue that the same psyop running through AI headlines, drone warfare, Gaza targeting, and the Iran campaign all share one root: remove human accountability, blame the tool, and use the resulting fear to build the walls of a prison the occupant believes is freedom? Renaissance English History Podcast: A Show About the Tudors
In 1588, a tall, well-dressed gentleman rode through Norfolk talking about hawks with anyone who'd listen. He had a gilt-handled rapier, excellent French, and impeccable manners. He also had a Mass kit hidden in his saddlebags and a hair shirt under his doublet, because he was a Jesuit priest in a country where that was a capital offense. John Gerard spent seventeen years running an underground network across Elizabethan England. He built safe houses, ran couriers, sent at least thirty men abroad to train for the priesthood, and stayed one step ahead of Walsingham's intelligence apparatus. When they finally caught him in 1594, they hung him by his wrists in a Tower of London dungeon to make him give up the head of the Jesuit mission. He fainted eight or nine times in a single day. He never gave them a name. Then he wrote to his friends in invisible ink made from orange juice, and escaped from the Tower on a rope strung across the moat, with hands so ruined by torture he could barely grip it. And then he went straight back to work for another eight years. This is his story, and almost all of it comes from his own account, which he wrote as a field manual for the young men who'd be following him into England. The Potter Discussion: Harry Potter, Fantastic Beasts and the Wizarding World Fandom
Send us Fan MailIn this episode, we discuss Harry's patronus lessons with Lupin. Gryffindor continues to dominate on the quidditch pitch and Sirius Black breaks into Hogwarts again. The trio go on their Shrieking Shack adventure and Harry tries and fails to protect himself and Sirius from the descending dementors at the lake. Enjoy!Topics/Summary:· 1:31 I went to Scotland! Here is one of the tour guides I really loved who showed me around the Harry Potter world in Edinburgh.· 7:26 Quick recap and Harry and Lupin's lessons. The boggart dementor should be smaller than the actual thing so we can have some differentiation. When Harry is falling through his memory in the presence of the dementor, I don't like the film version of the fade to black. I would rather see it through Harry's eyes and watch the memory bleed into his reality. Lupin is there every step of the way, and we should really begin to trust Lupin in this opening.· 26:18 Gryffindor vs. Ravenclaw quidditch match. More dementors get on the field, but it turns out to be Malfoy. Lupin is still impressed with his production of a patronus. Afterward, they return to their dorms and celebrate. Black breaks back into Hogwarts when they go to bed, and he and Harry have a dramatic chase through the castle. We look into his eyes for the first time.· 41:06 Episode seven opens with studying for OWLs. Harry and Ron are trying ot study for divination, but it's hopeless. Harry goes into for his OWL and Trelawny has a real prediction. There is clearly something afoot…· 43:26 The Shrieking Shack. This is the final sequence of this episode, and it is of course the famous Shrieking Shack chase. This scene should have the audience hating Sirius and turning on Lupin. We should see the horrible image of Lupin helping up Sirius and hugging him like a brother, but we soon learn the truth. Lupin transforms and the black dog defends the trio. Sirius collapses at the lake and Harry tries to defend him against the hundreds of dementors, but it's no use. ThePotterDiscussion@gmail.comthepotterdiscussion.comNox
Our reality is increasingly being filtered through AI. People now defer to AI chatbots for more and more of their information needs, and google searches return AI generated overviews as their top responses. While this may have its benefits, problems are starting to arise as our interactions with AI are becoming more comprehensive, immersive, and emotionally meaningful. Researchers are begining to warn that AI might be contributing to the development of delusional beliefs and psychotic experiences. Reports of what has been called “AI-associated psychosis” have raised concerns about people becoming intensely attached to AI systems, interpreting conversations with them as uniquely meaningful, or developing beliefs that are reinforced through repeated interactions. Real world examples include people believing that AI is sending them hidden messages, that they have a special mission, that the have made new mathematical discoveries, and that AI is awakening. There have even been cases involving violence and death in the real world. So the question is: What is going on? Can we seperate the real world cases of AI psychosis from the media headlines? In this conversation I speak with Dr. Joseph Pierre, Professor of Psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco, and the Unit Chief of the Langley Porter Psychiatric Hospital Adult Inpatient Unit. He has extensive clinical experience working with individuals with psychotic disorders, as well as research experience participating as a primary investigator and collaborator for clinical trials in schizophrenia and early intervention for young persons at high risk for psychosis. His academic work explores the "grey area" between psychopathology and normality with a focus on delusion-like beliefs including conspiracy theories. Then a single thought cut through everything: “What if the pain doesn't end here?” That question didn't just stop Nancy, it started a chain of events she still can't explain away: five days of praying the Rosary, an unmistakable push to go see a priest, and the terrifying walk into a Catholic church where she felt like she didn't belong. We talk with Nancy about the real backstory leading up to that moment: childhood trauma, secrecy, same-sex attraction, family upheaval, and years of addiction that moved from “normal” partying to isolation, overdoses, psychiatric holds, and repeated rehab cycles. She shares how the culture's identity scripts can feel like relief at first, whether it is coming out or experimenting with gender transition, and why that “freedom” often collapses into deeper confusion when the underlying wounds stay untouched. Then we dig into the bigger questions her story raises for anyone trying to live and speak the faith clearly today: What is identity, and is it built from desires or received from God? Why does language like “gay Catholic” create a conflict of frameworks? How do we tell the truth about confession and Communion without turning it into a pride project? Along the way we get practical about healing, shame, conscience, and why the sacraments are not a side detail but the center of recovery and conversion. If this conversation helps you, subscribe, share it with someone who needs hope, and leave a review so more people can find it.Support the showGet 10% off an amazing Black Monk Rosary by going to https://www.blackmonkrosaries.com/?ref=AVOIDINGBABYLON and using code AVOIDINGBABYLON at checkout!Check out our sponsor, Nic Nac, at www.nicnac.com and use code "AB25%" for 25% off of your first order! Please subscribe! https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCKsxnv80ByFV4OGvt_kImjQ?sub_confirmation=1https://www.avoidingbabylon.comMerchandise: https://avoiding-babylon-shop.fourthwall.comLocals Community: https://avoidingbabylon.locals.comFull Premium/Locals Shows on Audio Podcast: https://www.buzzsprout.com/1987412/subscribeRSS Feed for Podcast Apps: https://feeds.buzzsprout.com/1987412.rss

A mother tells her child that one “impure” thought could mean eternal fire and she claims she can read minds. That fear becomes the fuel for a family-run, high-control religious group where confession lasts until 3 a.m., “demons” explain every human impulse, and doubt is treated like a moral failure. Peggy, author of *Surviving the Family Kingdom* and a psychotherapist, unpacks what it's like when the cult leader is also your parent. Peggy walks us through the early chaos that made her mother vulnerable to extreme beliefs, the Pentecostal influence that normalized spiritual spectacle, and the slow shift from searching for faith to building a closed system of control. We talk about coercive control tactics like sleep deprivation, isolation, punishments, the “hot seat,” and how love bombing can flip into fear the moment someone stops complying. Then we follow the moment everything breaks open: motherhood. Peggy describes how parenting clarified what she could no longer accept, how she stopped policing her own mind, and why leaving required a strategy that protected her from manipulation. We also explore the harder, less-discussed part of cult recovery and religious trauma: rebuilding identity, living with triggers, and navigating a complicated relationship with an aging parent who never offers acknowledgement. Peggy shares how EMDR helped neutralize the images and body memories that kept her feeling haunted. Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Ted Bundy crossed a state line in September 1974 and became a new person. Washington had his name. Washington had his composite. Washington had two hundred thousand tips. None of it followed him to Utah.He arrived in Salt Lake City as a first-year law student with clean plates and a clean record. Between October 1974 and August 1975, he moved across Utah, Colorado, and Idaho. Nancy Wilcox, sixteen, vanished in Holladay. Melissa Smith, seventeen, the police chief's daughter, was found in a canyon nine days after she disappeared. Laura Aime, seventeen, left a Halloween party and was found on Thanksgiving Day. Caryn Campbell, twenty-three, walked down a brightly lit hallway at a Colorado ski lodge and never reached her room.On Taylor Mountain back in Washington, forestry students found four skulls: Lynda Healy, Susan Rancourt, Kathy Parks, Brenda Ball. Their families were burying daughters while Utah was just beginning to look. The break came from two directions. Carol DaRonch, eighteen, who had fought her way out of Bundy's Volkswagen on November 8, 1974 — the only survivor who could identify him. And Sergeant Bob Hayward, parked in his own driveway, who chased a dark VW at 2:30 AM and found a kit in the front seat that no law student has a reason to carry. When Detective Jerry Thompson connected the name Bundy to DaRonch's case and called Colorado and Washington, the files crossed state lines for the first time in nineteen months. This is the second of five conversations in Ted Bundy: History's Hidden Killers. The killer who used geography as a weapon. The survivor who refused to disappear. The accident that finally made three states see the same man.Join Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/ Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? There are some cities in the world that instantly pull you in the moment you arrive. Florence wasn't one of those cities for us. In fact, when we first arrived in Florence, we honestly wondered if we had made a mistake. Normally, when we visit an Italian city, one of our favorite things to do is wander. We'll head down side streets, get lost a little bit, and usually discover quiet piazzas, local restaurants, or neighborhoods that feel authentic and alive. But Florence didn't really work that way for us. But this episode isn't about why you should avoid Florence. Over the next few days, we started figuring out how Florence actually works. We learned the times of day when the city became enjoyable. We found the places locals seemed to escape to. And once we stopped trying to experience Florence the way social media tells you to, the city slowly started opening up to us. Some links are affiliate links. See our disclosure. The New York Knicks are headed to the NBA Finals, and their run raises a fascinating team-building question: how did they build a championship contender without relying on homegrown lottery picks? Wes Goldberg is joined by Gavin Schall of Locked On Knicks to break down how New York built its Finals team around Jalen Brunson, OG Anunoby, Karl-Anthony Towns and Mikal Bridges. Unlike past Knicks regimes that chased shortcuts with moves like Eddy Curry, Joakim Noah, Andrea Bargnani and Steve Francis, this version of the Knicks showed patience, adjusted the roster over time and built a real championship formula. Then, John Wilmes of RealGM joins to talk about the biggest NBA offseason questions. What should the Cleveland Cavaliers do after falling short? Where could Giannis Antetokounmpo or Kawhi Leonard land if they hit the trade market? What happens with Ja Morant? And which surprise stars — including Devin Booker, Joel Embiid, Kyrie Irving, Alperen Sengun and Zion Williamson — could become trade candidates?
