From the early audition that proved to Kate Mara's mother that she had what it takes to become an actor to scoring a role in Brokeback Mountain, working with Ridley Scott on The Martian and then some, we’re covering as much of it as possible on Collider Ladies Night in honor of Mara’s latest release, A Teacher. Mara leads the FX series as Claire Wilson, a teacher starting a new job at a high school in Texas. While her home life with her husband Matt (Ashley Zukerman) isn’t perfect and Claire struggles with strained relationship with her family, this new gig is off to a promising start and offers hope. However, when Claire begins tutoring one of the students (Nick Robinson) on the side, lines are crossed with Claire leaving irreparable damage in her wake. Not only does the show mark some of Mara’s best work yet, but it’s also her first time serving as an executive producer on a series. Whether it’s gaining experience as a producer or using her knowhow and voice to advocate for stellar talent, like suggesting Gabriela Cowperthwaite to direct Megan Leavey, Mara is clearly making moves to not just wow crowds in front of the lens, but also to create successful working environments behind them, making her an ideal guest for Collider Ladies Night.

Season 3:  Episode 75 - Longtime Companion/It Comes At Night   Longtime Companion (1990) Considered one of the first major films to deal with the AIDS crisis of the 80’s would be considered a triumphant upon its release.  Told from the point of view of a group of friends in a ten year period would show the impact the disease would have.  The title comes from what the New York Times would use for the surviving same sex partner who had died from the AIDS virus.   Norman Rene and Craig Lucas would bring this amazing story to the screen.  Rene would die of the AIDS virus in 1996.  Craig Lucas is a multi-talented stage performer, director and writer and has won numerous awards for his work on Broadway.   The film stars Mary Louise Parker, Bruce Davison, Campbell Scott, Patrick Cassidy, Dermot Mulroney and Michael Schoeffling. It Comes at Night (2017)   Written and directed by Trey Edward Shults following the death of his father, the film tells the story about a family who take refuge from a contagious disease in a house deep in the woods and the effects this has on the family.    The film takes its cue from the 1562 oil painting, The Triumph of Death whilst being influenced by the work of Paul Thomas Anderson and John Cassavettes.  It also gives a nod to The Shining and Night of the Living Dead.  This is a totally original work that surpassed expectation upon its initial release beating out big budget Hollywood films such as The Mummy and Megan Leavey.   The film stars Joel Edgerton, Carmen Ejogo, Christopher Abbott, Kelvin Harrison Jr and Riley Keough.    Opening Credits (.20); Introduction (5.13); Forming the Plot (9.46); Film Trailer (18.31); Page to Page (21.39); Outlining the Script (54.17); Film Trailer (57.17); In Sequence (1:00.51); Lights, Camera, Action (1:01.25); Epilogue (1:30.04); End Credits (1:33.49); Closing Theme (1:35.02)   Opening Credits – Go West – by The Village People from the album Go West In The Navy   Closing Credits – Our Perfect Disease – by The Wombats from the album The Wombats Proudly Present….The Modern Glitch   All songs rights reserved   All music available through Amazon.

In this pt. 2 episode we talk more about Tim’s father and some of the men he worked with as an L.A. cop in the late 70’s and 80’s. I refer incorrectly to an article I read about police officers with college degrees being less likely to draw their weapon than officers without a degree.  I’ll address that in the close along with a link to the actual article below the description. We discuss the ways our fathers and men of the 60’s and certainly through the 70’s and 80’s dealt with their emotional issues themselves as opposed to now in what Tim calls the post psycho-therapy era.  How do you deal with your emotions? How do you deal with PTSD? How does law enforcement and other first responders deal with some of the horrific things that they see on a weekly basis? Fun and hilarious stuff like that. We talk about the different ways Tim might tell his father’s story visually in terms of a feature film versus a long form content like television… not broadcast television but the binge watching type of content we’ve become used to like Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Dexter and on and on and on.  See how much TV you watch? And we start out this session by wrapping up our discussion of Megan Leavey, the marine corporal from the movie of the same name.  Apparently her purple heart had been stolen and returned to her in a ceremony at Yankee Stadium. Plus her dog Sgt. Rex’s very different reactions to two Yankee players; Nick Swisher and Alex Rodriguez.  Apparently Rex can sniff out Steroids as well as bombs. The link to that video will be at the bottom of the description as well. The Modern Moron talks about feelings and television and police work… all the good stuff with hardly any laughs!  Thank you for listening. Corporal Megan Leavey and Sgt. Rex Honored at Yankee Stadium U.S. Police: Education levels and the use of force - MSNBC 2014

A beloved actor, Emmy, SAG and Golden Globe winner Edie Falco, will star in Law & Order True Crime: The Menendez Murders. I spoke with her on Employee of the Month, about her marriage and off-screen relationship with James Gandolfini on The Sopranos, shifting priorities, and challenges single parents face. She talked about making money, her rise early on as an indie film queen after SUNY Purchase, and theater ticket prices. Edie mentions Brad, as in The West Wing's Bradley Whitford, as we discuss the pitfalls with certain acting teachers, MFA's and BFA's. The two co-star in a new film Megan Leavey, and you can hear my interview with him up next. Plus, Edie Falco and Stephen Wallem, Nurse Jacki alum, give a special surprise treat, you can't miss.
