Interview Date: May 11th, 2025Houston Ballet soloist Jacquelyn Long traces her path from living-room pliés with her mom (a former pro) to summer intensives, HBII, and the main company. She shares how relationships and coachability shaped her trajectory, why modern/contemporary versatility now matters as much as classical technique, and how social media helps—but shouldn't replace—the messy, vital process. We dig into audition materials, the “right” photos, favorite roles (Sylvia! Cinderella!), life as a working ballerina (weekly schedule, contracts, AGMA, benefits), pointe-shoe realities, nerves and mindset, longevity habits, and her growing passion for choreography. Plus: where to see her onstage next and practical encouragement for dancers finding their own path.Show Notes:(0:41) - Intro & bio; welcome Jacquelyn Long (2:20) - How she started; early training at home (2:24) - Mom steps back; Janina trains until 11 (3:14) - Houston Ballet intensives begin at 14 (5:31) - “Go where you're liked” scholarships lesson (6:49) - Relationships, coachability, work ethic matter(12:20) - Be versatile: modern/contemporary equals ballet (14:03) - Social media's role; process over perfection (16:03) - Audition toolkit: video, resume, show both styles (18:49) - Best photos: true headshot, first arabesque (20:32) - Favorite roles; Sylvia, Cinderella, new premieres (22:21) - Business mindset: many paths, trust timing (25:38) - Next chapter: choreography alongside performing (45:16) - Contracts, AGMA, pay cadence, key benefits(54:55) - Pointe shoes: custom Bloch, company-paid(57:46) - Final advice; where to see Houston BalletBiography:Jacquelyn Long began her ballet training under the direction of her mother, Suzanne Lownsbury, and Janina Michalski at Ballet Virginia. The Sound Kitchen
France and the EU deficit limit

The Sound Kitchen

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 18, 2025 32:54

This week on The Sound Kitchen, you'll hear the answer to the question about France's budget deficit. There's a lovely French poem, your answers to the bonus question on “The Listener's Corner” with Paul Myers, and a perfect musical dessert from Erwan Rome on “Music from Erwan”. All that and the new quiz and bonus questions too, so click the “Play” button above and enjoy!  Hello everyone! Welcome to The Sound Kitchen weekly podcast, published every Saturday here on our website, or wherever you get your podcasts. You'll hear the winner's names announced and the week's quiz question, along with all the other ingredients you've grown accustomed to: your letters and essays, “On This Day”, quirky facts and news, interviews, and great music … so be sure and listen every week. Erwan and I are busy cooking up special shows with your music requests, so get them in! Send your music requests to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr  Tell us why you like the piece of music, too – it makes it more interesting for us all! Facebook: Be sure to send your photos for the RFI English Listeners Forum banner to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr More tech news: Did you know we have a YouTube channel? Just go to YouTube and write RFI English in the search bar, and there we are! Be sure to subscribe to see all our videos. Would you like to learn French? RFI is here to help you! Our website “Le Français facile avec rfi” has news broadcasts in slow, simple French, as well as bilingual radio dramas (with real actors!) and exercises to practice what you have heard. Go to our website and get started! At the top of the page, click on “Test level”, and you'll be counseled on the best-suited activities for your level according to your score. Do not give up! As Lidwien van Dixhoorn, the head of “Le Français facile” service, told me: “Bathe your ears in the sound of the language, and eventually, you'll get it”. She should know – Lidwien is Dutch and came to France hardly able to say “bonjour” and now she heads this key RFI department – so stick with it! Be sure you check out our wonderful podcasts! In addition to the breaking news articles on our site, with in-depth analysis of current affairs in France and across the globe, we have several podcasts that will leave you hungry for more. There's Spotlight on France, Spotlight on Africa, the International Report, and of course, The Sound Kitchen. We also have an award-winning bilingual series - an old-time radio show, with actors (!) to help you learn French, called Les voisins du 12 bis. Remember, podcasts are radio, too! As you see, sound is still quite present in the RFI English service.  Please keep checking our website for updates on the latest from our excellent staff of journalists. You never know what we'll surprise you with! To listen to our podcasts from your PC, go to our website; you'll see “Podcasts” at the top of the page. You can either listen directly or subscribe and receive them directly on your mobile phone. To listen to our podcasts from your mobile phone, slide through the tabs just under the lead article (the first tab is “Headline News”) until you see “Podcasts”, and choose your show.   Teachers take note!  I save postcards and stamps from all over the world to send to you for your students. If you would like stamps and postcards for your students, just write and let me know. The address is english.service@rfi.fr  If you would like to donate stamps and postcards, feel free! Our address is listed below.  Independent RFI English Clubs: Be sure to always include Audrey Iattoni (audrey.iattoni@rfi.fr) from our Listener Relations department in all your RFI Club correspondence. Remember to copy me (thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr) when you write to her so that I know what is going on, too. N.B.: You do not need to send her your quiz answers! Email overload! This week's quiz: On 30 August, I asked you a question about France's budget problems … since I asked that question, two governments have been dissolved: that of François Bayrou, and that of the next in line, Sébastien Lecornu, who quit after just a few days, but now he's back. It's a high-level game of musical chairs, and we still are not anywhere near coming up with a budget. You were to read our article “French PM puts government on line with call for confidence vote” and send in the answers to these two questions: What is France's budget deficit, and what is the official European Union limit for a country's budget deficit?   The answer is, to quote our article: “After years of overspending, France is on notice to tame a budget deficit that hit 5.8 percent of gross domestic product last year, nearly double the official EU limit of 3 percent.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question: “What is your favorite memory of your mother?” The question was suggested by Liton Rahaman Mia from Naogaon, Bangladesh. Do you have a bonus question idea? Send it to us! The winners are: RFI English listener Debashis Gope from West Bengal, India. Debashis is also this week's bonus question winner. Congratulations on your double win, Debashis. Also on the list of lucky winners this week are Paresh Hazarika, a member of the United RFI Listeners Club in Assam, India, and RFI Listeners Club members Shadman Hosen Ayon from Kishoreganj, Bangladesh, as well as Arne Timm from Harjumaa in Estonia. Last but certainly not least, RFI English listener Rowshan Ara Labone from Dhaka, Bangladesh. Congratulations winners! Here's the music you heard on this week's program: “Les Feuilles Mortes” by Jacques Prévert, set to music by Joseph Kosma and sung by Yves Montand; “Twelfth Street Rag” by Euday L. Bowman; “The Flight of the Bumblebee” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov; “The Cakewalk” from Children's Corner by Claude Debussy, performed by the composer, and “Serenade to a Cuckoo” by Roland Kirk, performed by Kirk and the Roland Kirk Quartet. Do you have a music request? Send it to thesoundkitchen@rfi.fr This week's question ... you must listen to the show to participate. After you've listened to the show, re-read our article “Morocco Gen Z protesters call for 'peaceful sit-ins' to demand reforms”, which will help you with the answer. You have until 10 November to enter this week's quiz; the winners will be announced on the 15 November podcast. When you enter, be sure to send your postal address with your answer, and if you have one, your RFI Listeners Club membership number. There will be three more of these ships arriving here this fall, the last one in October.

Classic Radio Special - August 10, 1945 - Japanese Surrender is in sight-Part 4We conclude our look at the day before VJ Day, August 10, 1945, 80 years ago as broadcast on WEAF in New York, NBC's New York City station. Our final block is Soap Operas with news bulletins along with news and commentary. We start at 5pm Eastern War Time with When a Girl Marries.  Steve and Irma discuss the bucket of water dumped on the floor by Cathy. Steve swears to get even with Harry for what he did to Betty. At 5:15 EWT Portia Faces Life starring Lucille Wall (Far right, pictured).  Cathy confronts Walter face-to-face. He plans to return to Parkerstown...and Portia! Portia however, plans to marry Dr. Byron. At 5:30pm EWT Just Plain Bill.   Nancy and Kerry are chatting on the porch, worrying how Gwen Arthur is taking the death of her mother. Bill tries to help Craig, he urges Craig to forget the past. Gwen refuses to speak to Jeff. Has Sybil at last been successful? At 5:45pm EWT Front Page Farrell.  David Farrell banters with Kate in the newsroom. Alice and Lucy hear a man groaning. Veronica Redfield announces that she's reached a decision! At 6pm EWT The Six O'Clock Report with Lyle Van.  The program starts with late developments on the possibilities of a Japanese surrender. There has been no word as to the Allied reaction to the Japanese condition of the continuance of the Emperor on the throne. The Russians are advancing in Manchuria. Nagasaki is still burning, Allied attacks continue. General Sarnoff's article about atomic bombs - written in July - has appeared in the New York Times. Four hundred and thirty-one naval vessels have been lost since the start of the war. At 6:15pm EWT, Serenade to America.  A Japanese surrender bulletin is heard mid-program. Semi-classical and easy listening music with no internal announcements.  At 6:40pm, EWT Bill Stern Sports.  Bill gives baseball scores, race results, what will the Japanese surrender mean to sports? At 6:45pm EWT  Lowell Thomas and the News. An analysis of the Japanese request to allow the Emperor to remain the head of the government. Mr. Thomas relates his conversation with J.B. Powell, an expert on the Japanese monarchy, who was recently released from captivity. Mr. Thomas tells a fascinating story of how the story broke...in Morse code at only twenty-five words-per-minute. There is an interesting description of the atomic explosions and the implications of atomic bombs. "You can never tell when other nations will develop the atomic bomb on their own." Mr. Thomas gets so enthusiastic about the implication of the bomb that he's still speaking when NBC finally cuts him off the air. Read more about Lowell Thomas here!  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lowell_ThomasMore coming up on Thursday - VJ Day.

(mg)

Within a few years, she was practicing classical music by day and gigging with Belfast bands by night.Suzanne talks about her deep connections with Belfast and its music scene, her varied musical influences, and how she balances her artistic endeavors with practical considerations. Suzanne tells of her jazz influences, international experiences, noteworthy performances, and the important community initiatives she supports in Belfast. In the Duncairn concert, she was backed by her Savage Five string ensemble for an evening of her contemporary art songs, a reminder that there's more than Trad to be had in the first UNESCO City of Music on the island of Ireland.Join us for a journey through the marvelous musical landscape of the stellar Suzanne Savage! And thanks to the Belfast Music Society for their warm welcome.LinksSuzanne SavageFacebookInstagramLinkedInTwitter/XBandcampYouTubePerformance: Singing Leonard Cohen with RTÉ Concert Orchestra Savage FiveWebsiteFacebookSeamus Plug - The People's Kitchen, BelfastFacebookAlbum: Kindness on the StreetsThe Duncairn Centre for Arts & CultureWebsiteFacebookEpisode Details: Season 7, Episode 17; Total Episode Count: 120
