Nadia Lubowski, the director of the Anton Lubowski Educational Trust (ALET), faced the trauma of her father being assassinated in front of their home in Namibia when she was just nine years old. Having to deal with this trauma, she has adopted a leading art-based, trauma-informed approach to early childhood education in Philippi on the Cape Flats, where she teaches pre-school children. In an interview with Biznews, Lubowski highlighted the stark disparities in educational experiences between children in affluent suburbs and those in townships like Philippi, an area marked by violence. She recounts the harrowing story of a child in her programme who witnessed a classmate being shot. It is children like this that Lubowski wants to help, using art therapy to express their emotions and cope with trauma. Having identified a suitable piece of land, she is currently planning an art centre that would provide a safe space for parents, mothers, and young children to gather. ALET is in the process of raising R27 million for the project, and Lubowski emphasises that while forming a partnership with a corporate entity would be beneficial, it is essential that the initiative remains rooted in collaboration with the community to truly make a difference in the lives of Philippi's children.
In this wide-ranging interview with BizNews, Ian Cameron, the Chairperson of Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Police, takes viewers behind the scenes in the fight for a better police force. He covers the latest crime statistics; upcoming skills audits; the “carnage and chaos” and “dirty political fight” at Crime Intelligence; the “pushback” Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has been getting internally after “questioning certain things”; the significant challenge of working with certain senior managers in SAPS; the dangers of taking actions that directly impact on “especially the financial well-being of certain criminal figures”; and the horrific working conditions at the Anti-Gang Unit where he was shocked - on an unannounced oversight visit - to run into the very captain in whose vehicle a known Cape Flats hitman posed with a big smile a few years ago. Cameron also shares the successful outcomes of a number of the committee's ground-level visits and departmental hearings. “I hope that these kinds of cases will set a bit of an example to potential wrongdoers in the South African Police Service….Something…that's encouraging to me is the fact that from all the different parties or entities sides there are questions. So it makes it very difficult for anyone to hide because everyone has different contact points and different persons that they speak to. So I think it's becoming a very uncomfortable environment to be in.”
Short documentary, 31 Chatham Street, was launched on Tuesday 11 Feb, which was also the 59th Anniversary of the declaration of District Six as a white area, under the group areas act. As some of you may remember, more than 60 000 people were forcibly removed to sub-housing areas, specifically created for them on the desolate Cape Flats, on the 11 February 1966. Today we chat to Soraya Maltheze about the documentary and about her experiences living in Dry Dock in District Six . She was 11 years old when she left..The film was produced by the Vuselela Ons Luister, which is an oral history programme run by the District Six Museum. EJ Von Lyrik hails from a township called Mitchell's Plain on the Cape Flats, Cape Town, South Africa. She has been writing and performing her own material ever since she started working on music as a career in 1997. Having a distinct interest in music production, she started producing her own instrumentals in 2001.Her music is an eclectic mix of funk, rock, dancehall, hip hop and roots reggae. She is a strong advocate for human upliftment and inspiration through the medium of music and therefore her music carries positive messages in her lyrics. E.J feels the reason for this cross-over of musical genres is to reach out to a more diverse audience because the music is message orientated. She has performed on various international stages as well as collaborating with some hefty names in the music industry, and was a member of the (now disbanded) legendary, female hip hop group Godessa. This is a collection of her work spanning 20 years as a solo artist and also one third of the iconic and legendary African female rap group, Goddessa. I've had the honour of being the group DJ to both Godessa & EJ Von Lyrik performing within South Africa and abroad and her body of work is something to behold. 1.Intro Chuck D & Flava Flav 2.Conquerer (single - High Voltage Entertainment - prod Grenville Williams 2013) 3.Open your eyes ( (taken off debut album, Method in the Madness 2007, High Voltage Entertainment - prod. The operating environment in South Africa for ride-hailing services like Bolt is fraught with complexity, while the country's crime problem only contributes to the challenge of getting passengers safely from A to B. This complexity is compounded by the nuances of operating in different areas. Municipal districts have different permitting requirements, while competitive elements from other transport sector players, like taxi associations, presents further challenges. Fulfilling a ride request in the Cape Flats at 11pm is a different proposition to one in Sandton at 2pm. Simo Kalajdzic, senior operations manager at Bolt South Africa, tells TechCentral's business technology show, TCS+, about how Bolt is approaching these challenges. He delves into: • The overall problem that Bolt is trying to solve for South Africans; • Bolt's strategic approach to safety on the platform; • The £100-million investment into safety Bolt has pledged at a global level; • The technological solutions baked into the Bolt app for both drivers and passengers; • The industry-wide collaborations Bolt has undertaken to address safety from an ecosystem perspective; • How drivers and riders are empowered to be safe on the platform; • Feedback from a recent stakeholder engagement meeting held in Cape Town; and • Bolt's long-term vision for safety in the South African context. In the hero's journey, the hero or heroine is called to adventure. Often in the form of a quest, a challenge, or an adversity,And often in unexpected ways. One of the things that's interesting about the hero's journey is that shortly after the call a helper enters the picture.A mentor, sage, guide, or a coach of some sort. They help the hero:Navigate the adventureStrengthen themselvesAnd ultimately transform in ways that allow them to meet their life from a wiser, more skillful, and more responsive place. As we looked at starting a new series featuring everyday heroes, the role of the helper was striking. And we couldn't help but think this new series would be incomplete if we didn't include episodes featuring helpers. So here we are.Launching our next episode in this new adventure.Conversations featuring inspiring stories from everyday heroes and the helpers who walk beside them.Today I am honored and excited to share another beautiful helpers conversation, with Hayley Philander.Hayley is a Lawyer who cofounded an organization called IseeU.On the organization's website they share:Every morning young women from the Cape Flats face an overwhelming challenge – they wake to a community with some of the highest rates of gangsterism and drug addiction in South Africa. They also face an epidemic of gender based violence alongside a failing education system. It is from this environment that our young women begin to formulate their identity, their sense of potential and their dreams for the future.IseeU was launched eight years and offers a three-year mentorship programme supporting young female students from Grade 10 to 12, who are from the Cape Flats. The name IseeU was inspired by one of the young women participating in the programme – who shared that she felt seen, for the first time in her life. Building a future starts with feeling seen.Today, we'll explore some of Hayley's journey in co-founding IseeU, including:Growing up in Apartheid South Africa and the story of a mentor who saw her potential, believed in her, and helped her to feel deeply seen. More about the mission of IseeU and the incredible work they are doingTools and practices that have helped young women in their program move from reactivity, to responsiveness, dream about their future and find hope in the face of immense challenges. With South Africa at “boiling point” and running gun battles on the Cape Flats, negotiations for the country's new Government of National Unity (GNU) took some dramatic turns this week as more parties (including the EFF and BOSA) entered into coalition talks with the ruling African National Congress (ANC) while the Democratic Alliance (DA) teetered on the brink of going back to the opposition benches. In this interview with BizNews, United Independent Movement (UIM) President Neil de Beer speaks about the DA's fight for the economic cluster and the portfolios that are critical to the movement of the basic economy, lifestyle, and stability of the country. He describes President Cyril Ramaphosa re-emerging as the “the Cyril of the CODESA negotiations…and putting down his iron rod”. De Beer also dissects the East-West factions inside the GNU and warns of a looming foreign policy battle. Meanwhile, he reminds the current president that there are factions inside the ANC, the government, the police, the army, and the intelligence services that remain loyal to former President Jacob Zuma.

The Cape Flats in South Africa is an area plagued by gang violence and drug abuse. The situation has been so dire that the army was sent into the townships in 2019 to control the situation. Exposure to the violence is particularly distressing for children who are caught in the crossfire. It is for these children that the Cape Kids Foundation, a non-profit organisation based in Muizenberg in the Western Cape, aims to ensure better outcomes. The Foundation takes in teens from the age of 14 and provides learning support for them throughout their adult life. Vicky Bauer, the Director of the Foundation, said in an interview with Biznews that the foundation, established in 2017, is for curious and determined young people who come to them for a place where they can feel safe and experience the power of being part of a family. From their initial program working with young adults, the foundation has evolved into a residential program with a strong emphasis on trauma counselling, and a school, the Alex School, was established in Muizenberg. Bauer said that The Cape Kids Foundation is in the process of designing an outdoor environmental education program on a site that they have acquired on a mountain peak in Glencairn. They are clearing the site of alien vegetation and making it safe for the neighbourhood that has experienced devastating wildfires in the past. She highlighted that students who come to them are children who don't have dreams because they are merely surviving.
The DA-led City of Cape Town has faced criticism for removing the Palestinian flag mural in Lavender Hill, whilst residents said gang-related graffiti had persisted across the Cape Flats without being removed for years.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) is becoming an “iron fist” for the African National Congress (ANC) in certain parts of South Africa. Crime fighter Ian Cameron of Action Society speaks to BizNews about the latest abuses of power and lack of accountability in SAPS. He describes how Police Minister Bheki Cele was escorted by six Flying Squad vehicles, three Public Order Policing (POP) vehicles and three mini buses from TRT to an ANC meeting on the Cape Flats. “…is the South African Police Service now a private security service for the ANC?” Cameron is fuming that eight “Blue Light Mafia” members who publicly assaulted civilians are back at work after their suspensions lapsed. He points out that the Presidential Protection Unit reports to Wally Rhoode who mainly reports directly to the President Cyril Ramaphosa. “So it's basically this little private security force that they've built on the side with police power that benefits a certain group of politicians.” Cameron also speaks about the submission Action Society made to Parliament today (Tuesday 25 October) on the new IPID bill that would give the Minister of Police “a complete monopoly on law enforcement in South Africa”. - Chris Steyn

South Africa once had the most abundant and cheap electricity on the continent. Now, it is experiencing power blackouts. It's called loadshedding, the process by which the power company Eskom occasionally reduces the demand for electricity on the national grid. For many South Africans this means no electricity for up to ten hours a day, almost every day. The result is disruption to everyday life, impacting on work, education, sanitation, food and heating. In 1994 Nelson Mandela's African National Congress party promised a better life for all South Africans. So why is South Africa's infrastructure crumbling? Kaaps is a language widely spoken in the bleak townships of Cape Town, South Africa. It's often denigrated as a lesser form of Afrikaans – the language that was used as a tool of white supremacy during the apartheid era. Spoken predominately by working class people on the Cape Flats, Kaaps is associated with negative stereotypes – its speakers denigrated as uneducated, "ghetto" layabouts involved in gang culture. But a new, burgeoning movement led by hip-hop artists, academics, writers and film makers is actively changing that perception. They want to reclaim Afrikaaps to restore the linguistic, cultural and racial dignity of a formerly disenfranchised people. The writer Lindsay Johns travels to Cape Town to meet the activists determined to assert the worth and pride of the people who speak Afrikaaps. When 18-year-old Lekita Moore was found murdered in Valhalla Park, the route to her killer was pretty direct. It would be all of the revelations that spilled over after the arrest of Cameron Wilson, though, that would soon underpin the true horror of what had happened on the Cape Flats over preceding two years (24-hr trauma helpline 082-821-3447) (Support the show on Patreon https://www.patreon.com/truecrimesa) (Support the show on PayPal https://www.paypal.me/truecrimesa)
