Jonathan Pritchard is a man who lives a very uncommon life. He's made his way through the world as a mentalist, juggler and magician of sorts, creating a path for himself that veers well off of the beaten path. Along the way, he realized that the skills he had developed to engage an audience and to lead them into a perception of the world that was different than the one they walked into his room with could be used to create a lasting and beneficial difference in their lives. So, he set about doing just that. Motivational Mentalist might seem like an odd career path, but nevertheless, the man has chosen it and built it into what can only be described as a unique legacy. We talked about physical reality and it's relationship with imagination, mental tools and frames to help catalyze change in your life, his fascinating history and quite a bit more. There's something for everyone in here, and don't let the idea of "woo-woo" so often attached to a man in Jonathan's industry scare you off, he's got a very grounded perspective and makes sure to tie his ideas into the real-world in a very clear and understandable way. It was great getting to know Jonathan, and I'm pleased to share this conversation with you. Want more from Jonathan Pritchard? Tory and Mikah explore the history of dreams in mythology before interpreting three dreams from listeners. Featuring: space, dead bodies, wizards, smart home tech, and drama club. Notes and links Dreams in Mythology Greek & Roman Mythology Oneiroi: Morpheus, Phobetor, and Phantasos Dreams are messages from the gods. Norse Mythology Dreams can predict the future. Dreams are messages from the gods. Dreams are a way to speak with mystical beings. Egyptian Mythology Egyptian dream dictionaries were among the first examples of dream interpretation. Dreams were sorted between good omens and bad omens. Hawaiian Mythology Dreams are "soul sleep," a time to communicate with one's ancestral guardians. Dreams can teach us songs, dances, cures for ailments, and provide us with guidance. Japanese Mythology The Baku is a mostly benevolent dream devourer shaped from a bear, elephant, and ox. It will eat away one's nightmares. Nightmares Nightmares aren't dark, spooky horses. Mares are a mythological fiend that rests on the chest of sleeping victims, suffocating them. Many, many languages have a word for nightmare that uses "mare" as its root. It was believed that sage, blessed amulets, the Baku, a dreamcatcher, a prayer, a worry doll, and more could ward off nightmares. Dreams Listener Markus: A dream about space, dead bodies, competence, and, perplexingly, a kitten in a fish bowl. Listener Brian: A dream about a whimsical wizard that loves to talk about smart home tech — particularly his smart trash can and smart sewing machine. Listener Wei: A dream about drama club, sponsorship, leadership, and anxiety. Welcome to Power Strangers! This episode Ryan finally gets some answers from a man that feels like a racist stereotype of a race that has yet to be discovered! Zombie monsters, a budding bromance, stupid new dimensions, and a whole bunch of weird chanting. This is truly an episode full of things no one came close to asking for. On filler recap Nick can't believe there was actually a clip show this season and he can't stand it. All this and more in episode 16 (That's Magic?!)
This Thanksgiving Day special brings back one of my favorite episodes from last year, plus an all-new interview with Whitestone Motions Pictures producer and film composer Nick Kirk.Last year during Thanksgiving, we had a special about the dark origin of the Tin-Man from the Wizard of Oz and the lessons filmmakers and other artists can learn from that story. The basis for that episode was Whitestone Motion Pictures director Brandon McCormick talking about the making of their film "Heartless," their version of the aforementioned Tin-Man origin story. This Thanksgiving we bring that episode back, plus a brand new interview with Whitestone's film composer Nick Kirk. This whole episode is chock full of artistic inspiration.Music in this EpisodeMusic from today’s episode was curated from the Song Freedom. The inspirational rise and fall (and rise again) story of how Whitestone Motion Pictures came from the brink of throwing in the towel, to shooting a project for The History Channel. If you've been listening to this podcast since the beginning, you know that there is only one person who's been featured on the show more times than show regulars JD and Yolanda. That person is Atlanta filmmaker Brandon McCormick of Whitestone Motion Pictures. After posting last week's bonus episode about Brandon's incredible database of feature film screenshots, it occurred to me that out of all the episodes in which he's appeared, I've never really given any kind of in-depth story about the history of Whitestone and his journey as a filmmaker. So today, that's what I have. This week's episode is a tad longer than normal, but I promise you'll savor every inspirational minute. We cover such topics as:How and why they do the kind of work they doHis affection for nostalgic and period piecesHis thoughts on artists vs. artisans and the significance of the differenceThe trials and tribulations of almost making their first feature film and the lessons he learnedHow the History Channel project came aboutAnd of course, it wouldn't be a Brandon McCormick episode without some profoundly poignant ending that makes you wanna go out and conquer the world!Music in this EpisodeIn order of appearance, the music in this episode:Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairyby Kevin MacLeod (CC BY)The rest of the songs are from the soundtrack of "That's Magic," music and lyrics by Nicholas Kirk, courtesy of Whitestone Motion Pictures. It's a powerful and creative film about an important topic.
