Monique Rodriguez, Founder & CEO of Mielle Organics, shares how a hobby in her kitchen became a global haircare brand and the highest exit of any Black woman in history. After the devastating loss of her son, Monique turned to social media and haircare as an outlet for grief. What began as sharing homemade recipes online evolved into a business built on real connection that took over the natural hair space. Within months of launching, she left her nursing career. Within five years, she faced a $2M financial hole that nearly cost her everything. In this conversation, Monique opens up about betting on herself before she felt ready, building without mentors, mismanaging early capital, walking away from a 40% investment deal, and ultimately securing the right partner. Her story is a grounded look at what it really takes to scale through pain, risk, faith, and battle-tested business lessons. Key Takeaways and Topics Turning personal grief into creative purpose Building community before building product Leaving nursing to go all in on a kitchen hobby $300K in year one with no business background Skipping the playbook and trusting her gut Bootstrapping for six years before raising capital The $2M accounting mistake that almost ended everything Walking away from a 40% equity deal Finding the right investor (and why it's like dating) The P&G acquisition and the backlash that followed Why she reframes "selling out" as building Black wealth Links The Failure Factor Podcast was brought to you by Off The Field Coaching. Darby McDevitt is a narrative director and writer at Ubisoft . He's worked on multiple games in the Assassin's Creed franchise, which spans time periods from Ancient Greece to Victorian England. But what does it mean to be a writer on a massive video game where your character is mostly running, climbing, jumping and fighting? The key to his work lies in historical research, but he is sometimes torn between what would actually happen and what pop culture has trained us to expect from different eras of history. We also discuss his new novel, The Halter, which imagines a future where virtual reality is so realistic and addictive that people abandon their real lives and have to be tracked down. This is the first episode in a multi-part series on video games. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

A remarkable Coloradan - and an American pioneer - celebrated his 92nd birthday in September. Ed Dwight was the first Black man to be selected for astronaut training more than 60 years ago. And six decades later, he became the oldest person to go to space. Dwight's history-making didn't stop there. He went on to become a celebrated artist, sculpting important monuments to Black legends. His body of work appears in Denver and at memorials across the country, and in museums like the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C. This year, he was nominated for a Congressional Gold Medal. On this day in history, 19th November 1604, one of the most gifted churchmen of Elizabethan and early Jacobean England died - Richard Edes, Dean of Worcester, royal chaplain, poet, playwright, and one of the scholars appointed to help translate the King James Bible. Edes was only fifty years old when he died, and his death came just months after the great translation project began. He never lived to take part in the work that would define English religious life for centuries, yet his story opens a remarkable window into the world of late Tudor scholarship. In today's episode, I explore the life of this remarkable but often overlooked scholar: • His rise through Tudor academia • The plays and poems he composed as a young man • Queen Elizabeth's affectionate joke about her “three cousins” from the Isle of Wight • His church career and court connections • And the legacy he left behind at Worcester, Oxford, and beyond Join me as we remember Richard Edes, a man who stood at the crossroads of faith, learning, and language. If you enjoy discovering forgotten Tudor figures, don't forget to like, subscribe, and ring the bell for more daily Tudor history. #TudorHistory #RichardEdes #KingJamesBible #ElizabethI #JamesI #OnThisDay #ClaireRidgway #TheAnneBoleynFiles
