Jill and Tom open the show discussing Ford's decision to import from China the compact Lincoln Corsair, this after briefly dropping the model due to manufacturing complications here in the U.S. The hosts go on to discuss news that Acura will be bringing to the North American market a 3-row crossover larger than the brand's popular midsize MDX. Note that the MDX is also offered with a 3rd seating row, though the accommodations are less than generous. Also discussed in the first segment is Nissan's plan to pull ahead the launch of the redesigned Rogue compact crossover. Already rescheduled from a mid-2027 rollout to a January introduction, the Rogue is now expected as early as this September. Listen in to learn why this updated crossover is so important to the Japanese carmaker. In the second segment the hosts welcome Tim Esterdahl of Pickup Truck plus SUV Talk (pickuptrucktalk.com). Tim shared insights into the massive ongoing Toyota-truck V6-engine recall, which will in some cases require a complete engine replacement. How long does it take to replace a truck engine? Listen in for details. Tim also shares news regarding his new WeTalkCars.com project, which expands his coverage beyond trucks and crossovers, and will include car reviews, consumer information, and buying guides. In the last segment, Jill is subjected to Tom's "Ten Years Later" quiz. Tom also shares some insights regarding EV startup carmaker Lucid, and its construction of a car factor in Saudi Arabia. Sony's mishandling of its games-as-a-service initiative is well-worn territory here on Sacred Symbols, but that doesn't mean the fallout doesn't persist. This time around, Guerrilla's new multiplayer title Horizon: Hunters Gathering is the focal point. Based on recent reporting, it appears Sony is having the dev team rework the game to remove live service and other persistent elements, and its fate will be decided by December, with cancellation still very much on the table. Bungie and Marathon, Haven and Fairgames, Firewalk and Concord, Naughty Dog and The Last of Us Online, the Deviation-turned-Dark Outlaw project, Bluepoint and God of War Online, a cancelled multiplayer Spider-Man game at Insomniac, Twisted Metal never getting far off the ground at Lucid... Truly, it's enough already. Plus: Until Dawn star Hayden Panettiere sadly passes away at 37 years old, Grand Theft Auto VI suffers a catastrophic leak, Hiroko Totoki talks to the Wall Street Journal about Sony's move away from tech and towards entertainment, Square Enix swears Kingdom Hearts IV will launch in 2027, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Is Naughty Dog's high-caliber approach ultimately unsustainable? Have we lost sight of the reality of how bad the experience of using physical media actually is? How can we both run Sacred Symbols effectively while ignoring the endless, persistent, and unrealistic negativity? Will Colin ultimately push Dustin over the line by insisting he's Japanese? Initial output is 30,000 units a year, with Dutch prices from €27,995 ($32,000) and the next-generation BAYON and i20 to follow next year.HYUNDAI OPENS IONIQ 3 ORDER BOOKSHyundai Motor UK has opened orders for the IONIQ 3 compact hatchback from £22,245 on-the-road, positioning it against the Kia EV2, Renault 5 and VW ID Polo. Buyers choose a 42.2kWh battery with up to 213 miles or a 61kWh version with up to 308 miles, both charging 10-80% in about 30 minutes, and the car debuts Hyundai's Android Automotive-based PleOS Connect system. Grant eligibility is still pending.LUCID UNVEILS GRAVITY GT-SLucid's 2027 Gravity GT-S produces 1,070hp from a dual-motor powertrain and hits 0-60mph in 3.1 seconds, priced from $127,750 — about $14,000 below the outgoing Dream Edition. It comes with rear-wheel steering and adaptive air suspension as standard, while a 926V architecture supports 400kW charging that Lucid says adds 200 miles in under 12 minutes.FRANCE TO BACK USED ELECTRIC VEHICLESFrom September, France will subsidise used EV purchases and leases through the Energy Savings Certificates scheme, funded by energy suppliers including EDF, Engie and TotalEnergies under the polluter-pays principle. Cars must have been first registered in France between 2017 and 2023 and retain at least 80% battery capacity, with buyers required to keep the vehicle three years and to purchase through a dealer rather than privately.PORSCHE REPORTS POINT TO TAYCAN PHASE-OUTPorsche is reported to have agreed in principle with employee representatives to end Taycan production by 2029 or 2030, closing a roughly decade-long run, though nothing has been formalised or confirmed. Output has collapsed from 39,397 cars in 2023 to 11,510 in 2025, with first-half 2026 deliveries down 25% and no successor named as Porsche appears set to prioritise the electric Macan and Cayenne.TESLA ADDS V2L TO MODEL Y PREMIUMTesla has enabled vehicle-to-load for the Model Y Premium in the US and Puerto Rico, delivering 2.4kW at 120V via an $80 adapter that requires the Gen 3 Mobile Connector. Eligibility is narrower than the badge suggests, with reports indicating only newer Juniper-built cars from around May 2026 carry the necessary hardware, and Tesla still trails rivals offering up to 10.2kW.TESLA LEASES POWERWALL BACKUP IN TEXASTesla Electric is offering a whole-home Powerwall lease in selected Texas retail-choice areas for roughly $35 a month plus tax in year one, achieved by applying an $87 monthly credit to a two-unit lease costing about $122. The deal carries a 3% annual escalator, a $100 order fee, a 20% minimum backup reserve for virtual power plant dispatch, and credits that may not start until two billing cycles after installation and utility approval.CORVUS TO SUPPLY BATTERIES FOR BC FERRIES SUMMIT CLASSCorvus Energy will supply 40MWh of battery storage across four hybrid-electric Summit Class ferries for BC Ferries, each carrying 360 vehicles and 2,100 people and fitted with a 10MWh Dolphin NxtGen system. The hardware is scalable to 70MWh per vessel for near-zero-emission running once shore charging exists, with China Merchants' Weihai Shipyard delivering the first ship in 2029 and all four in service by 2031.FERRARI LUCE SELLS FOR $40 MILLIONChassis 0 of the Ferrari Luce, the marque's first EV and a one-off Tailor Made build designed by Sir Jony Ive's LoveFrom, sold for $40 million at RM Sotheby's Monterey auction, over 36 times its estimate and a record for a new car. The sale was offered without reserve and with no buyer's premium, sending the full amount to The Ferrari Foundation, with winning bidder Dr Herbert Wertheim taking delivery early next year.

Uber is going all-in on autonomous vehicles, committing roughly $10 billion across more than 30 AV partnerships. But how many of those bets will actually produce commercially viable robotaxis—and does Uber ultimately become the Expedia of autonomous transportation? In this episode of The Autonocast, Alex Roy, Ed Niedermeyer, and Kirsten Korosec break down Uber's sprawling autonomy strategy and debate which partners have the best chance of reaching meaningful scale. The discussion covers Waymo's relationship with Uber, Wayve's prospects in London, the Lucid-Nuro robotaxi program, Rivian's autonomy ambitions, and whether consumers will ultimately book directly with robotaxi brands or through aggregators like Uber. The crew also examines Lucid's operational reset, including major cost reductions, leadership changes, its delayed midsize EV, Saudi manufacturing plans, and why the Uber-Nuro robotaxi partnership could become critical to Lucid's future. Then it's on to Ford's proposed $30,000 electric pickup, what it could mean for affordable EV adoption, and whether Ford's scale and manufacturing experience threaten EV startup Slate. The hosts debate Ford's opportunity to finally build a profitable mass-market EV platform, the importance of quality and reliability, and whether consumers really want the stripped-down, analog experience Slate is promising.Plus: Joby vs. Archer in the eVTOL race, the Porsche Cayenne EV, Tesla FSD and ADAS as a purchasing decision, Alex's increasingly eccentric car collection—and what he should buy next.Topics include: Uber robotaxis, autonomous vehicles, Waymo, Wayve, Nuro, Lucid Motors, Rivian, Tesla FSD, Ford EVs, Slate Auto, affordable electric vehicles, Joby Aviation, Archer Aviation, eVTOL, robotaxi economics, AV regulation, self-driving cars, EV manufacturing, ADAS, and the future of mobility.

Every trim gets a large touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, BlueCruise, bidirectional charging, a digital key, a native NACS port and the first embedded Apple Maps navigation, with pre-orders and the full reveal due in early 2027 and customer deliveries later that year.CALIFORNIA'S MYFIRSTEV REBATES START PAYING OUTCalifornia's MyFirstEV programme has begun paying out $3,500 off a new EV and $1,750 off a used EV at the point of sale, funded by $135.5 million from the state matched by $135.5 million from manufacturers for a $271 million pot that could support more than 73,000 clean vehicles, with new vehicles capped at $50,000 MSRP, used at $25,000, and buyers required to attest they have never owned an EV. The caveats are significant: the price caps do not apply to California-headquartered makers Lucid and Rivian, carmakers choose which models and trims qualify, CARB judges eligibility on base-trim MSRP so pricier variants like the Model Y Performance still qualify, and used EVs must be certified pre-owned from franchised dealerships and at least two model years old.BMW STARTS I3 PRODUCTION IN MUNICHBMW began series production of the i3 at Plant Munich on 6 August, making it the second Neue Klasse model to reach series production after the iX3, with orders opening in mid-June and demand forcing an unusually steep ramp-up curve. Plant Munich head Peter Weber said the launch cuts manufacturing costs by a further 10% through forward planning, supplier collaboration, targeted automation, digitalisation and the Neue Klasse architecture, with the First Edition priced at €75,340 ($87,100) and the later base i3 50 xDrive at €65,900 ($76,180).ŠKODA STARTS PEAQ PRODUCTION IN MLADÁ BOLESLAVŠkoda Auto has started series production of the Peaq, its largest and most expensive electric model, at Mladá Boleslav, where it shares a line with the electric Elroq, electric Enyaq and combustion Octavia Combi, allowing output to shift between powertrains as demand changes; the model went on sale in June and had almost 8,500 orders by the end of July. Batteries are assembled on site, with a 91 kWh gross/86 kWh net pack offering more than 640 km (398 miles) of range and a smaller 63 kWh gross/59 kWh net pack starting at €49,990 (about $58,000).CHINESE BRANDS GAIN GROUND IN GERMANYChinese brands took 3.8% of German registrations in the first half of 2026, up from 2.2% in 2025, achieved in Europe's largest car market while overall demand stayed flat. Research from Deutsche Automobil Treuhand found Korean-brand owners most open to switching, with nearly one in two considering a Chinese model and one in five certain to buy, against nearly one in three of Japanese-brand owners and roughly one in four German-brand owners, though the German figures are not presented on a comparable basis and stated intent does not prove actual defection.ROYAL MAIL HITS 9,000 ELECTRIC VANSRoyal Mail has taken delivery of its 9,000th electric van, assigned to the Colchester Delivery Office, in what it calls Britain's largest electric delivery fleet, with 44 delivery sites now diesel-free and almost a third of routes zero-emission. The programme began in 2017 with an order for 100 vans and is justified by lower running and maintenance costs on short urban rounds, and now extends beyond the last mile with the first electric HGV added in December 2025 and more than 100 micro electric vehicles being deployed across the UK.KIA PV5 TAKES 37% OF EUROPEAN MARKETKia's first electric van, the PV5, arrived at the end of 2025, beat the company's own launch forecasts and now holds 37% of Europe's small electric van market according to ACEA data, leading its segment in 12 countries including the UK and Germany across Passenger, Cargo and Chassis forms. In Britain the PV5 Cargo leads all electric vans on 2026 registrations to date, and July brought Kia's first four-figure electric van month with 1,019 registrations, split 784 Cargo and 235 Passenger.ARNOLD CLARK ADDS £8.99 CHARGING SUBSCRIPTIONArnold Clark has launched an £8.99 ($12) monthly subscription on its Arnold Clark Charge network, available only through Octopus Electroverse, cutting ultra-rapid charging to 39p/kWh from the 55p/kWh standard tariff, a 16p/kWh saving that repays the fee at roughly 56kWh a month or about one and a half fills of a mid-size battery. The move carries weight because Arnold Clark is Britain's largest independent dealer group, with 140 service centres, 16 accident repair sites, 38 rental branches and Central Car Auctions, and recently reported annual revenue above £5.56bn ($7.5bn) with new-car sales up 11.2% in 2025 on the back of new EV franchises.VAUXHALL CORSA GSE STARTS AT £32,995Vauxhall has priced the electric Corsa GSE at £32,995 ($44,400) after the UK Electric Car Grant, with order books opening in September and first deliveries due in winter. Built on Stellantis's electric hot-hatch version of the e-CMP platform and shared with the Opel Corsa GSE, it uses a 207 kW (278 hp) front motor for a claimed 0-62 mph in 5.5 seconds, making it the quickest-accelerating production Vauxhall on sale and the most powerful Corsa ever, and positioning it as successor to the Nova GTE/GSi, Corsa GSi and Corsa VXR.NEW YORK TO ADD 600 CURBSIDE CHARGERSNew York City's Department of Transportation plans to add 600 curbside charging points to the PlugNYC network across all five boroughs over three years, lifting public curbside Level 2 points from 88 to 688, with each site carrying at least two posts and four charging points plus spare electrical connections for future e-mobility uses where grid capacity allows. Priority goes to dense neighbourhoods with little off-street parking and high numbers of taxi and ride-hailing drivers as well as low- and moderate-income communities, with Commissioner Mike Flynn tying the scheme to the Mamdani administration's 2050 net-zero goal, while a separate expansion at municipal parking facilities will add 92 fast and 180 Level 2 charging points procured and built by the New York Power Authority. One flag worth raising: the Ford story contains an error in the source copy — "$29,945, or £22,30" is a malformed sterling conversion. Also, your instruction was two sentences per story, but several of these items carry more load-bearing detail than two sentences comfortably hold; I've kept to two, but the Ford and California summaries in particular are doing a lot of work in single sentences and would read better at three or four if the format allows it.

The Neue Klasse flagship uses sixth-generation eDrive tech and a 108.7 kWh battery, charges at up to 400 kW to add 373 km (231 miles) in ten minutes, and starts at €73,925 ($85,200) in Germany for the iX3 50 xDrive with up to 805 km (500 miles) of WLTP range.BMW TO BUILD IX5 BATTERY PACKS IN SOUTH CAROLINABMW will begin mass production of iX5 high-voltage battery packs in December at its new Plant Woodruff in South Carolina, near Plant Spartanburg where the iX5 is assembled, keeping pack assembly in-house to build a local supply chain, cut geopolitical risk and reduce logistics costs. AESC, now majority-owned by China's Envision Group, supplies the 120 mm cylindrical cells — which deliver 30% more usable energy than the iX3's 95 mm cells — giving the US iX5 a 144 kWh pack (141 kWh in Europe), an estimated 435 miles of range, 460 kW peak charging and a 10-80% charge in 22 minutes.ZEEKR 9X ARRIVES IN EUROPEZeekr has launched the 9X Ultra 6-Seater in Europe as a luxury SUV and its first Super Hybrid, pairing a 900V dual-motor system with a 2.0-litre turbo engine used purely as a generator for 897 horsepower, 0-100 km/h in 4.1 seconds, up to 737 km of range and a 10-80% DC charge in 9.5 minutes. Designed in Gothenburg with adaptive air suspension and CDC dampers, it offers reclining, massaging first and second rows, an onboard refrigerator, a ceiling-mounted 17-inch 3K OLED screen and a 32-speaker Naim system, and marks Zeekr's fifth European model in three years across 16 markets.SK ON AND FACTORIAL TARGET SOLID-STATE SCALESK On and Factorial Energy have partnered to push solid-state batteries towards production, combining Factorial's FEST cell technology with SK On's manufacturing network to tackle the scaling problem that has held back a chemistry promising higher energy density, longer range and faster charging than lithium-ion. Factorial is already testing cells in North America and has integrated them into Stellantis' Dodge Charger Daytona prototype, claiming 375 Wh/kg energy density, while its work with Mercedes-Benz produced a modified EQS that covered over 745 miles on a single charge.TESLA SHIP LOAD SETS SHANGHAI RECORDThe Chinese-built car carrier Glovis Nova loaded 7,738 electric vehicles — all Tesla Model 3 and Model Y cars — at Shanghai's South Port Terminal on Sunday, a domestic record for a single voyage, and set sail for Zeebrugge, Belgium, for distribution across Europe. The 10,800-car vessel and its sister ship Glovis Leader, which berthed the same day before heading to Busan, were built by Guangzhou Shipyard International, a China State Shipbuilding Corporation subsidiary, and rank among the largest of their kind in the world.NORWAY LEADS GLOBAL EV ADOPTION INDEXNorway tops the latest Global EV Adoption Index with 73.2 out of 100, ahead of Denmark on 64.7 and China on 64.5, backed by a 92% EV sales share in 2024, 32 public chargers per 1,000 battery vehicles and 41.9% fast-charger coverage. Denmark climbed 40 percentage points since 2020 to a 56% sales share with 73 chargers per 1,000 EVs, China recorded a 48% share and 103 chargers per 1,000 vehicles, and Tesla led brand interest across 75 countries with 71.6 million Google queries in the past year.MITSUBISHI RETURNS TO NORTH AMERICA WITH LEAF EVMitsubishi will re-enter the North American EV market with the 2027 Eclipse Sportback EV, on sale in the US and Canada by late summer or early fall of 2026 through around 300 dealerships. Billed as all-new, it is in fact based on the next-generation Nissan Leaf via the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance, sharing its 75 kWh liquid-cooled battery, native NACS port, Supercharger access and 150 kW charging (10-80% in about 35 minutes) beneath new fascias, lighting and alloys, with range and pricing still undisclosed.LEPAS L8 TARGETS EUROPE ON VALUEChery has launched the Lepas L8, a D-segment family SUV priced from £34,900 to £37,900, using the upmarket Lepas brand to challenge BMW and Volkswagen on space, equipment and price alongside stablemates such as the Jaecoo 7, Omoda 7 and Chery Tiggo 8. Power comes from Chery's Super Hybrid system combining a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and 18.4 kWh battery, while the cabin offers an upmarket feel, generous tech, vast rear legroom and headroom despite the panoramic roof, and a 507-litre boot comparable to a Nissan Qashqai's.KERBSIDE CHARGING SEARCHES JUMP AS EV COST SCRUTINY GROWSVertu reports that searches for "kerbside EV charging" rose 125% over the past three months while searches for "cheapest EV tariff" climbed 173%, suggesting buyers are weighing access and running costs together before switching. The trend matters because government figures published in 2024 found 40% of UK households have no access to off-street parking, leaving a large share of the market dependent on public charging and highly sensitive to the cost of every kilowatt-hour.PRINCE AL WALEED RAISES LUCID STAKEPrince Al Waleed bin Talal's investment office bought just over 19 million Lucid shares, lifting his stake to about 5% according to an SEC filing, with the prince saying he bought when Lucid's market cap was below $2 billion following speculation — since denied by Lucid — about bankruptcy or a take-private deal. The purchase, which Lucid welcomed as an independent vote of confidence, comes as the company restructures under new CEO Silvio Napoli after cutting 18% of staff in June on top of an earlier 12% lay-off, and adds to Saudi ownership alongside the Public Investment Fund's roughly 60% stake held since the 2021 SPAC merger.

Jill and Tom open the show by wishing Chicago radio friend and legend Steve King a happy birthday. Steve shares his birthday with none other than Mick Jagger. Tom shares details--what few there are--regarding a new Range Rover model due in U.S. showrooms within the next 36 months. The Range Rover GT is a sedan-like midsize/large crossover that will debut as an EV, and be made available later as a gasoline/hybrid model. Given its low profile, Tom questions the extent to which the GT will be a true off-road performer, like other Range Rover models. The hosts talk about the planned hiatus of the Honda Ridgeline midsize pickup truck. The truck is schedule to disappear from Honda showrooms after the 2026 model year, reappearing for the 2028 or 2029 model year. The new Ridgeline will be completely redesigned, and is said to feature a hybrid V6 powertrain. Still in the first segment, Jill and Tom review the new Lucid Gravity electric midsize crossover. The high-design EV mostly impresses, but a few software glitches left the hosts scratching their heads. In the second segment Jill and Tom welcome industry analyst Jamie Butters to the program. Jamie shares news regarding his new radio show, and walks the hosts through a number of big stories that broke this past week, including Ford opening a factory in Spain to Chinese-car production. In the last segment, Jill is subjected to Tom's "Which is Cheaper?" quiz, and the duo chat with producer Margaret about the team's group visit to Chicago's legendary Superdawg Drive-in. Listen in to hear what Tom, a vegetarian, orders at the Midwest's most-popular Drive-in.   Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. And we explore the courage it takes to prune not just the dead branches, but the living ones that are just no longer doing the job they could.MENTIONED:"Clean Your Room". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vp9599kwnhM✨☕This episode is sponsored by www.BecomeLucid.com Lucid is a functional mushroom and nootropic brand designed to fuel mental clarity, focus, and long-term brain health. Thirteen major automakers—including Tesla, Ford, GM, Toyota, Rivian, and Lucid—have joined the initiative, which is expected to launch later this summer. After learning her Minnesota assisted-living community could not legally serve drinks at social events, Anita LeBrun, 82, helped change state law. This week on Autonomy Markets, Grayson Brulte and Walter Piecyk discuss Tesla increasing their robotaxi inventory in Texas, a controversial autonomous vehicle bill in Washington DC, Uber's acquisition of Delivery Hero, and WeRide‘s global expansion strategies.Data from the Texas DMV shows that Tesla has 175 robotaxis registered in Texas, a quadrupling in just six weeks from 42 on June 1st. This is a trend that is not isolated to Texas, as Grayson has noted in his Robotaxi Miami Field Report that Tesla is also ramping up operations in that market as well.In Washington DC, a new district bill introduced by Councilmember Charles Allen aims to update the 2012 AV Act to allow commercial autonomous operations. However, the bill introduces highly restrictive mandates, including a requirement for autonomous vehicle operators to log over 250,000 testing miles within the district before receiving a commercial permit that could lead to regulatory capture for incumbents.Shifting to the delivery sector, Uber made a major move by earmarking approximately €2 billion through 2031 for European expansion, explicitly including autonomous vehicle initiatives alongside its acquisition of Delivery Hero. Meanwhile, Uber's autonomous delivery partner, Avride, launched sidewalk street robot operations in Miami via Uber Eats, having already completed 60,000 trips. On the Foreign Autonomy Desk, Grayson and Walt discuss WeRide's global Level 2++ on-road validation testing alongside Bosch in Germany, France, and Japan. Additionally, government data from Hong Kong reveals that 63 autonomous driving licenses have been issued across seven companies, with Baidu logging 149,129 miles with safety drivers on pre-approved roads.Closing out the show Grayson and Walt analyze Baidu‘s expansion into Kazakhstan and predict local robotaxi manufacturing could begin there within the next 12 to 18 months.Episode Chapters0:00 Tesla's Growing Robotaxi Fleet4:52 Washington DC's Autonomous Vehicle Bill12:03 Uber Acquires Delivery Hero and Bets on Autonomous Delivery18:07 Lucid's Selloff and the Nuro Partner Risk23:19 WeRide's Level 2++ Expansion24:57 Foreign Autonomy Desk27:10 Next WeekFollow The Road to Autonomy Indices--------About The Road to AutonomyThe Road to Autonomy is the leading applied intelligence platform covering the convergence of automation, autonomy, and the Autonomy Economy.™.Through our podcasts, newsletter, and proprietary applied intelligence, we set the narrative for institutional investors, industry executives, and policymakers navigating the convergence of automation, autonomy, and economic growth.Join institutional investors and industry leaders who read This Week in The Autonomy Economy every Sunday.
