— Holotropic Breathwork is based on the belief that each of us is guided by our own intrinsic wisdom, and that the opportunity for healing past traumas of the physical and/or emotional body or opportunities for opening a new doorway to creative flow lies within us - always available - as we become more aware of our natural ability to awaken to our authentic selves and our highest potential. Journeying in this expanded state, our psyche allows select biographical, transpersonal or mythological/spiritual material from our internal landscape to float to the surface of our conscious mind. As we feel safely supported, we are more likely to give ourselves the space and permission to work with and integrate this material for deeper understanding. The term ‘holotropic' means “moving toward wholeness.” Valeria interviews Yulia Meshoyrer  — She is a Russian-born distinguished Grof-certified Holotropic Breathwork facilitator dedicated to the transformative technique developed by Stan and Christina Grof.  Her extensive qualifications include an MA degree in General Psychology from Russia and an MA in Transpersonal Psychology from Sofia University. We're taking a little break this week, so here's a recurrance of an episode from April 2023: Series 1, Episode 3 - Symbols in Dreams with Dr Nigel Hamilton. See you in the New Year! ___ The questions we most often get asked usually come down to “What does it mean if I dream about ____?” We all want to know more about what our dreams are saying to us and how to interpret them, and people have been compiling manuals on dream symbolism since the advent of the written word. Even today there are hundreds of books on the subject online. But should we be attached to specific meanings? Does a tooth or cat or a car come with some universal meaning attached that is the same for everyone?  In this episode, Laura and Dave welcome Dr Nigel Hamilton aboard the Dream Boat to talk about personal and universal symbols in dreams and how he works with them as a psychotherapist. Nigel is a highly experienced therapist, teacher, researcher and one of the world's leading pioneers in dream interpretation techniques. He is the founder of one the world's top Transpersonal Psychotherapy colleges, the Centre for Counselling and Psychotherapy Education in London, co-founder of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies and the former UK Representative of the Inayatiyya Sufi Order International. He has spent years studying and pioneering techniques for working with dream symbolism and his book Awakening Through Dreams: Journeys Through the Inner Landscape covers some of his fascinating discoveries. He teaches workshops and leads courses on spiritual approaches to psychotherapy at CCPE.  In this episode, Dr Hamilton discusses the symbolism of colours, symbols of transformation in the alchemical model, and how we can discern the personal from the universal.  For our “Dream of the Week” feature, Nigel shares three brief dreams which marked particular steps in his own process.      Let us know what you think, and submit a dream for us to explore on the podcast!  Instagram @thedreamboatpodcast FaceBook @dreamboatpodcast Twitter @dreamboatpod DRI website: driccpe.org.uk/contact  This podcast is a project of the DRI, the centre for dream studies at CCPE, the psychotherapy college overlooking the canals at London's scenic Little Venice. Beyond lucidity:  For experienced lucid dreamers, at least some of them, the ability to live out endless fantasies gets tired pretty quickly, and they start to use their lucid dreams to explore the nature of their minds, their dreams, consciousness, and existence itself.  In this episode, Laura and Dave talk to someone who has done exactly that, and written about it, and who teaches people who want to do the same: Melinda Powell. They talk about how dreams have shaped and influenced Melinda's life and work, and the powerful messages she has received in dreams, including the directive to teach and write about what she has learned from paying attention to her inner world. Melinda is one of the Co-Founders of the DRI Centre for Dream Studies; she is a psychotherapist and teacher of dreamwork and the art of lucid dreaming, and is the author of two books about dreams, “The Hidden Lives of Dreams: What they can tell us and how they can change our World”, and “Lucid Surrender: the alchemy of the soul in lucid dreaming”. Dave and Laura invite their old teacher Dr Nigel Hamilton back on board to talk about his Waking Dream Process, a therapeutic method for re-imagining a dream and revisiting it as a visualisation. It is used to expand, deepen and embody the experience of the dream and get to its essence. In this episode, Nigel talks about dreams as a journey, not just a narrative. He tells us how we can track consciousness travelling through the body during sleep, and why it is important to connect images to sensations and locate them in the body, and how this releases the transformative power of dreams. He shares images of transformation from his work as a therapist using the Waking Dream Process, including decapitation (as a good thing!) and an emerald green scarab beetle that represents the way out of a nightmare. He also talks about some of his own profound dream experiences that shaped his view of dreams and his development of the Waking Dream Process. In the literary world, it's called the Muse, that spark of inspiration that leads to the creation of original works of art. Some people flow with ideas and have no trouble spinning those thoughts into novels, poems or any innovative work of vision. But many of us – me included at times – often stare at that screen in frustration, unable to bring a single thought to the page.     But there is a way to bring your thoughts to light and that's by using your dreams as your inner Muse. It's not a secret. Many authors of the past, including Mark Twain, Langston Hughes and Samuel Taylor Coleridge, have worked with their dreams to create books and poems that we remember to this day. Another writer and poet that knows this is my guest, Certified Professional Dreamworker Tzivia Gover. Through her Dreaming on the Page workshops and book she has taught others how to use their dreams to bring their own creative thoughts into being. Tzivia tells us:·      Why you never have to struggle with your writing again·      How creativity is connected to dreams·      Who benefits from her writing programs·      The special practice that makes you a better writer·      The subtle shift in how you write down your dreams that makes a better difference·      The best way to use writing prompts·      Exercises that spark your creative mind·      How to use writing to help deal with your nightmares    Tzivia writes this about herself: When I was 23 years old, I wrote in my journal:“I am a writer: A woman who wants to share her dreams. I am a dreamer: a writer without words.” I've grown more deeply into that knowledge of who I am in decades since.      Now, I make a living doing what I love most: writing, thinking, and teaching about dreams and how to live a life full of meaning, purpose, and joy—from the inside out.      I write self-help/inspirational books and memoirs, as well as poems, stories, and essays. I am also a certified dreamwork professional who leads workshops and teaches domestically and abroad, in person and online. I am a member of the International Association for the Study of Dreams and the former education director for the Institute for Dream Studies.     I have synthesized and applied my varied experiences as a journalist, professor, and professional dreamworker, along with my studies of mindfulness, yogic philosophy, and the scientific, psychological, and spiritual aspects of dreams to craft simple, elegant, and effective methods for dreamwork and writing. By sharing my knowledge in these ways, I help my clients, readers, and workshop participants live more empowered, authentic, and joyful lives.     Now I've fulfilled my long-ago aspiration to dream, write, and wake up to my best life. The questions we most often get asked usually come down to “What does it mean if I dream about ____?” We all want to know more about what our dreams are saying to us and how to interpret them, and people have been compiling manuals on dream symbolism since the advent of the written word. Can dreams trigger personal alchemy? We talk to Kat Appleby about her own process, which started with a dream fragment that triggered a major somatic experience which lasted for months and turned into an ancestral memory from an enslaved ancestor. Kat shares with us how, over the last few years, her dreams have led (and are leading) her through a process of learning about her own divinity. She shares dreams of water, fire, rage, snakes, dancing women and more snakes. We talk about cultivating a practice of growing to trust yourself and how you can use ritual to explore your own dreams. We also touch into the idea of the psychoid. BIO: Katrina Appleby was a Certified Professional Dreamworker and a Mentor for the Institute of Dream Studies. Since the age of four Kat has been aware of the importance and power of dreams and dreamt often about snakes. She finds that it is indeed quite normal to meet Gods, Goddesses and power animals in her dreams. Kat joins us today from the UK. What does the Bible teach us about how to understand our own dreams? In this Christmas Eve edition of the Dream Journal, we speak with Carol Oschman about her book, Biblical Dream Study. The Bible mentions dreams 134 times, yet the dreams of modern-life parishioners are rarely mentioned from the pulpit. Carol Oschmann shares with us practical advice about understanding our own dreams derived from looking at the way that the Biblical figures interpreted theirs. She shares many Bible dream stories including Jacob, Solomon and of course, Joseph and his famous interpretation of the dream of the seven fat cows being eaten up by the seven lean cows. For example, Carol suggests that we, like Jacob, turn and face the beings that are chasing us in our own dreams, either in the dream itself or in waking life imagination. She also defines what she calls "Golden Sword" dreams akin to Judas' dream of being given a sword to defeat his enemies. These are dreams in which we are given tools to accomplish our goals. She gives examples of how she and others have been helped by ideas presented in dreams. We finish by touching on how dreams help with the grief of bereavement and Carol shares her own journey of recently losing her husband. BIO: Carol began her journey with dreams due to a spiritual awakening in 1985. She's traveled and spoken across the country and in England, taught dream interpretation in a prison for three years, led several dream groups. The spiritual experience was so exciting, that's all she wanted to talk about. Unfortunately the pastor in her Methodist church didn't agree and asked her not to come back. This book “Biblical Dream Study” in a way is her answer to those Christians who don't believe that God speaks to us in dreams. (Note that the correct way to pronounce Carol's last name is "Osh-man".) Dreams often bring simple moments of magic that can make all the difference, and every dream has hidden jewels ready to be uncovered. We talk today to dream guide and professional gemologist Jane Carleton. Jane describes how she knows when a person has found the right gem for them because their bodies change and their eyes light up. This is similar to dream work when an "Aha!" will light up a dreamer often without them being able to explain it. Jane shares stories about asking for waking life magic and about using talismans to help remember the dream. She also speaks about waking life inner voice experiences and shares a moment where that voice saved her during a carjacking. We take a call from Walter who shares an intense nightmare of a boy who is attacked by two giant gems. BIO. Jane E. Carleton, MA, GG holds two graduate degrees in Dream Studies, and Consciousness and Transformative Studies and has taught graduate courses on dreams at the California Institute of Integral Studies. As a Graduate Gemologist since 1984 she pursues two careers: as a dream specialist and fine jewelry appraiser. She speaks about practices she uses to bring dreams into her waking life including gentle awakening, journaling and mindfully sitting with the feelings of the dream. She suggests that dreaming is a sentient entity that we can be in relationship with and shares with us a song she wrote about a dream that helped her make a major decision for her family. Dr. Jeanette welcomes Tosin King James, author of Soul-Fullness, A 21-Day Do-It-Yourself Program for Spiritual Healing, Prophecy, Dream Study, Inner Guidance, and Total Mastery, to share the signs of our spiritual evolution, one moment in this time. The source of everything is the unit of spirit; the soul. How are you navigating your days and are you connecting your heart and spirit to source energy? We are now navigating the bridge between human and soul; how are we evolving? What are the barriers to our soul expansion and how can we see our part in the collective? Are we living from a cosmic quantum awareness, or from the old theory, validation and reproducibility paradigm of reality? What is soulfulness? We see and hear, feed to the mind, then process the information, and finally make decisions based on what is pushed out as the truth or belief. So how can we operate from a different template to expand our awareness and be more soulful? We are now at the point of collective awareness, and once you step into the new paradigm, you need a new perspective, a new sense of eyes, a new sense of knowing, as it is from spirit and soul that you navigate which is not from the old human paradigm. For more information on Tosin and his work, visit: www.TosinKingJames.comFor a free newsletter and book from Dr. Jeanette visit: www.DrJeanetteGallagher.com Dr. Jeanette helps you navigate the Human Soul expansion through storytelling, healing practices, and spiritual teachings. Jennie starts off by sharing her dream from age 3 in which a wolf bites off a chunk of her head. She has found dream work to be a process of reclaiming her body and setting free her voice. She reads three of poems centered on her dream work (or as she terms it "dream discovery") around the Earth Goddess, otherwise known as the Bird Goddess. We talk about the “odd and precise counsel” that dreams provide, and Jennie describes how she uses the labyrinth that she created in her backyard to deepen to impact that dreams have. Kat also reads a story that she created about snakes called, "We Once Were Dragons." We end with a question from Rick about how to identify gods and goddesses in our dreams. Tory and Mikah talk about a few medicinal sleep aids before interpreting three dreams from listeners. Featuring: house boats, murder scenes, oceans, backpacks, and a number of apocalypses. Notes and links Medicinal Sleep Aids Ambien an oral sedative and a nonbenzodiazepine does not cause racism helps you fall asleep more quickly, but isn't intended to help you stay asleep a gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) agonist, meaning it encourages production of GABA in the brain Ambien has some hypnotic side effects things you did on ambien - Reddit Ambien can cause dependence In very rare cases, Ambien has had some cognition-improving effect on individuals who have experienced brain damage. Antihistamines work by reducing or blocking histamines histamines are little chemicals created by your body that attach to histamine receptors on certain cells in your body histamine is created in the brain in histamine neurons. Histamine promotes wakefulness in the brain and is very effective at doing so. histamine acts on H1 receptors in the hypothalamus of the brain. antihistamines wiggle their way into the brain and keep histamine from connecting with those receptors, so your brain is like, "OK, time for sleeping now." newer, non-drowsy antihistamines affect the H2 receptors in the brain or don't cross the blood brain barrier at all. Melatonin Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland in our brain. It’s referred to as “the sleep hormone.” Melatonin production is controlled by the Suprachiasmatic Nuclei this magical region of the brain in the hypothalamus is connected to our eyesight and there are photosensitive cells in the nuclei. it's responsible for regulating our 24-hour circadian rhythm. between the neurons and the hormones it activates, it uses about 20,000 neurons to keep our shit running like clockwork. Melatonin helps kick your Stage 1 sleep into gear. You start to feel less alert and want to go to sleep. Melatonin production changes with time. shorter periods of production in the summer, longer periods in winter melatonin production drops with age, too. Studies show that Melatonin is a great coach for our body’s natural sleep-wake cycles. it may also shorten the time it takes you to fall asleep it may also improve sleep quality and increase amount of sleep overall Scientists at Ontario’s University of Guelph found that in more than 71 percent of melatonin supplements, the amount of melatonin was more than 10 percent different from what the product label indicated. some products contained as much as 83 percent less melatonin than was on the label other products contained as much as 478 percent more melatonin than was on the label Rozerem a melatonin agonist, meaning it encourages production of melatonin in the brain the only prescription sleep medication not classified as a controlled substance most don’t get the groggy hangover feeling you can sometimes get from other prescription sleep aids OK for long-term use, unlike drugs like Ambien as a prescription medication, it's held to higher standards and regulated better than something like melatonin supplements Dreams Listener Tyler: A dream about a boat house, a giant wall of water, a bathroom murder scene, and prophecy. Tory and Mikah explore the history of dreams in mythology before interpreting three dreams from listeners. Featuring: space, dead bodies, wizards, smart home tech, and drama club. Notes and links Dreams in Mythology Greek & Roman Mythology Oneiroi: Morpheus, Phobetor, and Phantasos Dreams are messages from the gods. Norse Mythology Dreams can predict the future. Dreams are messages from the gods. Dreams are a way to speak with mystical beings. Egyptian Mythology Egyptian dream dictionaries were among the first examples of dream interpretation. Dreams were sorted between good omens and bad omens. Hawaiian Mythology Dreams are "soul sleep," a time to communicate with one's ancestral guardians. Dreams can teach us songs, dances, cures for ailments, and provide us with guidance. Japanese Mythology The Baku is a mostly benevolent dream devourer shaped from a bear, elephant, and ox. It will eat away one's nightmares. Nightmares Nightmares aren't dark, spooky horses. Mares are a mythological fiend that rests on the chest of sleeping victims, suffocating them. Many, many languages have a word for nightmare that uses "mare" as its root. It was believed that sage, blessed amulets, the Baku, a dreamcatcher, a prayer, a worry doll, and more could ward off nightmares. Dreams can increase your emotional IQ. "The creative mind awake and asleep is the same mind." -Ryan Hurd The Cheat Sheet: Do we all dream, whether we remember or not? Why napping is a good thing. One of the top ten most common dreams is what? Dream work vs dream interpretation: what's the difference? What is dream incubation? And so much more... Do you remember your dreams from last night? Whether you do or not science has shown we all dream. Joining us to discuss the science of dreams and other dream-related topics is Ryan Hurd, dream expert and author of several books on dreaming including Dream Like a Boss. On this episode of The Art of Charm we dive into lucid dreaming, how dreaming is akin to creative workshopping your problems and how dreams can act as red flags for health problems. Click Here to Support The Show and Check Out HostGator! More About This Show Ryan's journey into dreams began at a young age. He remembers having very vivid dreams as a child, and being fascinated by them. At 14 he began a dream journal to chronicle his experiences. Although he became a field archaeologist after college, a decade later he returned to school to study his passion: dreams. He earned an MA in the Consciousness Studies program at John F Kennedy along with a Certificate in Dream Studies. He has worked with dream researchers and experts throughout his career. On this episode Ryan shares us with his scientific and practical application of dreaming. Practically speaking sleep is the third pillar of health, without it diet and exercise don't have nearly the same positive impact as they do when we're sleeping properly. We have to start with good sleep before we can do any quality dream work, like lucid dreaming. Once good sleep is in place our dreams can help us understand what's really important (and who), face our fears and anxieties, increase our emotional IQ and come up with solutions to pressing problems. Ryan says if we have a recurring dream about something or someone there's a lesson in it for us, our sleep is trying to tell us something. Have you had several dreams about a former lover from a decade ago? It doesn't necessarily mean you should contact that old flame. Instead, take that feeling you have from the dream and notice when you have that same feeling in real life: your dream is trying to guide you so you can change your response in that situation. Or if you find yourself dreaming about those bullies from elementary school time and again, use that dream to respond differently; you can use your dream to face those bullies, stand up for yourself and finally work through the fear and anxiety you felt in that situation. You'll have become more powerful in your dream and in real life. And you can use dreams to help you with current day issues: if you're faced with a problem or situation that you don't know how to resolve in real life your dreams can provide options and potential solutions. First you must be adapt at remembering your dreams and you can start by keeping a dream journal.Once you're remembering your dreams you can write down your problem before you go to sleep, then write down your dreams when you wake up. Do this for at least 3 nights in a row and your dreams will provide answers. Ryan and I also explore the topic of lucid dreaming, including some of the latest technological advances in this area plus dream incubation and his dream app recommendations.
