Today we're digging into the results of our recent Daily Detroit audience survey to see where our community actually stands on key political issues and values. Using Pew's excellent and long-standing political typology framework of nine groups, I look at the data and break down how our listeners and readers compare to the rest of the country, and what issues where we find a ton of common ground, no matter what party you may have voted for. Per Pew: "Pew Research Center's political typology sorts the American public into nine political groups based on responses to questions about social and political values. The goal of this long-standing project is to go beyond people's partisan leanings or vote choices to provide a deeper understanding of the American political landscape. This is the ninth version since 1987." While our audience spans a wide range of perspectives, the data shows a clear shared commitment to respect, local engagement, and smart, solutions-focused debate. I'll be honest with you. I didn't do any preparation for this interview. I don't generally do much preparation, but this time I didn't have any idea what this conversation was going to be about. I suppose I knew that Mr. Angle hosts a podcast called The Philosophical Angle. I knew that because he emailed me a few weeks ago to say he enjoyed the conversation I had with my friend Brent Freeman recently, and pitch himself as a guest. I've been happily pumping out podcasts lately, and I shamefully didn't take any time, even a moment, in advance of this conversation to consider what we might discuss. It must be my lucky day, because we had what I think is one of the most productive conversations I've had in 5 years of podcasting. When I say productive, I mean in terms of helping me find and refine (we're basically at the "refine" stage at this point) my political identity. I had no idea he just wrote a book called, "The Nature of the Political Left & Right." This was so on point for me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Ahead of next week's 2025 Abundance in DC, Marshall and Steve discuss his new Niskanen Center paper on "The Varieties of Abundance." In Steve's telling, despite broad agreement within the Abundance movement on the need to increase supply, challenge existing incumbents who benefit from scarcity, and the critical role of enhanced state capacity in addressing America's challenges, there are existing and potential varieties of Abundance across the ideological and geographic spectrums. Just as the late 19th- and early 20th-century Progressive Movement held a shared critique of the industrial-era American state, different actors took the project in different directions. Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Woodrow Wilson were all progressives, but operated in separate camps. In Steve's telling, abundance is already operating accordingly. In the paper, he identifies six varieties of Abundance: Red Plenty, Cascadian Abundance, Liberal Abundance, Moderate-Abundance Synthesis, Abundance Dynamism, and Dark Abundance. The aim of the paper is not to be overly inside-baseball, but to offer readers and listeners a framework for understanding the diversity of actors, institutions, and ideologies that have positively engaged with the Abundance framework.
