March 11, 1985. Waverly, Georgia. While holding a Bible class at the Rising Daughters Baptist Church, 66-year old deacon Harold Swain is summoned to the vestibule by an unidentified man. Harold is soon shot to death and when his 63-year old wife, Thelma Swain, goes to check on him, she is fatally shot as well. Eighteen years later, a suspect named Dennis Perry is convicted of the murders and receives two life sentences. However, controversy surrounds the conviction, as a lot of crucial evidence went missing, Perry seemed to have a solid alibi, and another suspect allegedly bragged about the murders. Did Dennis Perry actually commit this crime, or has the real killer escaped justice? This week's episode of “The Path Went Chilly” examines an “Unsolved Mysteries” case which may not be as “solved” as everyone thinks.Additional Reading:https://unsolvedmysteries.fandom.com/wiki/Harold_and_Thelma_Swainhttps://www.news4jax.com/news/man-found-guilty-of-1985-church-murdershttps://www.denverpost.com/2007/07/24/key-evidence-goes-missing-in-georgia-church-murders/https://www.georgiainnocenceproject.org/active-cases-2/case-page-perry/https://www.georgiainnocenceproject.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/2015-3-19-PERRY-combined.pdfhttp://matchbin-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/public/sites/2777/assets/A93D_Motion__exhibits_combined_SMALLER.pdfhttp://freedennisperry.blogspot.com/2007/11/This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/4838527/advertisement

Since “The Trail Went Cold” originally launched in February 2016, we have featured over 300 cold cases and unsolved mysteries on the podcast and a decent amount of them have either wound up being solved or had significant developments take place. Two years ago, we released a special “update” episode which detailed a lot of these developments, but there have since been many more new updates to share. Examples include the identification of the Sumter County Does; an arrest in the murders of Bobbie Jo Oberholtzer and Annette Schnee, a.k.a. “The Orange Sock Murders”; the overturning of a wrongful conviction for the murders of Harold and Thelma Swain, and a number of shocking revelations in the murder of 12-year old Jonelle Matthews. These are just a few of the cases we are going to discuss in our second special “update” episode of “The Trail Went Cold”. In 1985 Harold and Thelma Swain were murdered in their church one night after hosting a bible study. Follow Star's riviting covereage (provided by a kick ass article written by Joshua Sharpe). This is a twisted tale of who done it and just the complete lack of professional accurate police work. So pull up a chair, grab a drink and join us for some convos about what's happening in our cosmos.
On Mar. 11, 1985, Harold and Thelma Swain were shot in the vestibule of a Baptist church in rural southeast Georgia during evening Bible study. Witnesses from the black congregation described a white man with shoulder-length hair who fled the scene. Despite years of investigation by both the local sheriff’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, the case had gone cold by the end of the decade; even the leads generated by a 1988 episode of Unsolved Mysteries about the case proved false.
