June 12, 1993. Santa Clara, California. 21-year old U.S. Army Private Justin Burgwinkel leaves his girlfriend's apartment and never returns. One week earlier, Justin had gone AWOL from Fort Lewis, the post where he was stationed in Washington state, and kept hinting to his girlfriend that he was working on some sort of secret mission. Three months later, Justin's abandoned car is found at a motel in Monterey with his military dog tags and most of his personal items inside. While the Army denies that Justin was ever involved in any secret operations, no trace of him is ever found. Did Justin Burgwinkel go missing because he became involved in something sinister? Or did he suffer some sort of mental breakdown and lose his grip on reality? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unsolved disappearance of a soldier who has not been seen in three decades. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Clinton Police Department at (978) 365-4111. October 18, 1949. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Dorothy Forstein, the 40-year old wife of a local magistrate, is discovered to be missing from her home. Even though there are no signs of forced entry, Dorothy's nine-year old stepdaughter, Marcy, claims that an unidentified man entered Dorothy's bedroom and carried her unconscious body out of the residence. There is speculation that Dorothy's disappearance might be connected to another incident from nearly five years earlier where she was violently attacked by an unknown individual inside her house, but no trace of her is ever found. Could the same person who attacked Dorothy have been responsible for her disappearance? Is Marcy's story about the abduction an accurate account of what happened? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a perplexing disappearance which has managed to remain unsolved for over 70 years. August 10, 1991. Martinsburg, West Virginia. The nude body of 44-year old freelance investigative journalist Danny Casolaro is discovered inside the bathtub of his hotel room. Each of his wrists have been slashed multiple times, but since a suicide note is found and there is no evidence of foul play, the authorities conclude that Danny took his own life. In the year prior to his death, Danny claimed he was working on a massive story about widespread government corruption which he titled “The Octopus” and had supposedly travelled to Martinsburg to meet a source who would provide him with important information. Since the investigation contains number of suspicious mistakes and discrepancies, Danny's loved ones believe he was murdered and that a cover-up took place. Did Danny Casolaro's death actually a suicide or did his investigation into “The Octopus” put his life at risk and cause him to become the victim of foul play? This week, “The Trail Went Cold” will be presenting one of the longest and most convoluted episodes we've ever done, as we explore a truly controversial unexplained death. January 29, 1976. Auckland, New Zealand. 13-year old Tracey Ann Patient leaves her friend's house to walk home, but never arrives. The following day, Tracey's body is discovered in some bushes located sixteen kilometres from where she was last seen. She has been strangled to death with a pair of pantyhose which were tightened around her neck with a stick. Nearly two years later, police receive an anonymous phone call from a man who claims that a missing signet ring Tracey had worn can be found in a rubbish bin and he also provides a series of numbers which he says are connected to the case. Even though investigators do recover the ring from this location, they are unable to figure out the meaning of the caller's numbers and Tracey's killer is never identified. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel down under to New Zealand to explore one of their most prominent unsolved murder cases. December 14, 1981. St. John's, Newfoundland. 14-year old Dana Bradley leaves her friend's residence to head back home, but she never arrives and eyewitnesses report seeing her hitchhiking and climbing into a vehicle driven by an unidentified man. Four days later, Dana's body is found in a remote wooded area and she has been killed by multiple blows to the skull with a blunt instrument. Over the next four decades, investigators explore a number of different leads, included a confession from a suspect that is later recanted and an account from a witness who claims he was present when Dana's murder took place, but these leads never pan out and all attempts to identify the killer are unsuccessful. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we return to our podcast's home country of Canada to explore what is probably the most famous unsolved cold case from the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Newfoundland & Labrador divisional headquarters of the RCMP at (709) 772-5400 or the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). July 7, 1973. Tampa, Florida. The nude body of 34-year old Earlene Barksdale is discovered in the back office of the children's clothing store she owns and she has been raped and shot in the head in an apparent robbery. Police soon focus on a suspect named Joseph Green Brown, who was involved in a similar robbery at another location on the exact same date. After he is implicated by an accomplice, Brown is charged, convinced and sentenced to death for Earlene's murder. However, even though Brown comes dangerously close to being executed, the case against him is fraught with problems, so his conviction is eventually overturned and he is released from prison in 1987. Even though there seems to be evidence which implicates Earlene's spouse as a possible alternate suspect, no one else is ever charged with her murder. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a very controversial and complex murder case which has contained a number of shocking developments over the past five decades. May 26, 1991. Grand Rapids, Michigan. 28-year old Gordon Page Jr. is discovered to be missing from his room at the Cascade Foster Care Home, a residential treatment centre for individuals with autism. Since a man matching Gordon's description is seen hitchhiking on a nearby interstate, it is theorized that he escaped from the home in order to travel to Florida to see his family. There are additional reported eyewitness sightings of Gordon and a baseball card collection which is believed to belong to him is found underneath an overpass in the weeks following his disappearance, but he continues to remain a missing person. August 10, 1993. Mendocino County, California. 22-year old Kristi Krebs leaves her job at a pizza parlour, but never returns home and her abandoned car is found stuck in some mud in a remote wooded area the following day. The scene mirrors an incident from three years earlier where a car Kristi was driving caught fire in another wooded area and she suffered a psychotic trauma-related breakdown which caused her to temporarily lose her memory. Since there are multiple reports of a disoriented-looking woman matching Kristi's description hitchhiking throughout the country, there is fear that she suffered another breakdown and completely forgot who she was, but Kristi is never found. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a pair of missing persons cases which were featured on “Unsolved Mysteries” and are still without a resolution three decades later. If you have any information about the disappearance of Gordon Page Jr., please contact the Kent County Sheriff's Office at (616) 632-6100. November 25, 1991. Middle Township, New Jersey. 11-year old Mark Himebaugh leaves his residence in order to watch firefighters extinguishing a brush fire, but he never returns home. A search turns up Mark's left shoe on a nearby beach and while eyewitnesses place Mark in the company of multiple unidentified individuals on the afternoon he went missing, he cannot be found. Over one year later, a witness tells police that a sex offender named Thomas Butcavage screened a video of himself sexually assaulting Mark before confessing to his murder, but the alleged videotape is never found and no evidence links him to Mark's disappearance. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore one of the more disturbing missing children's cases we've covered. November 12, 1988. Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. After he is not heard from in over 24 hours, the body of 36-year old Byron Carr is discovered inside the bedroom of his residence. He has been strangled with a towel and stabbed with a kitchen knife and the words, “I will kill again”, are scrawled on the bedroom wall. The evidence indicates that Byron had sex with another man before he was murdered, but even though the perpetrator left his DNA behind, all attempts to match it to anyone are unsuccessful. Over the years, investigators receive a number of compelling tips, including the name of an accomplice who supposedly helped the killer cover up the crime, but the killer himself remains unidentified. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will travel back to our podcast's home country of Canada to explore the only known unsolved homicide from Prince Edward Island. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Charlottetown Police Service at (902) 629-4172 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). January 18, 1976. Colwyn Bay, Wales. The family of 15-year old Peter Watts returns to their residence and discovers he has left behind a note to say that he went to see a friend. Ten hours later, Peter's unconscious body is discovered on the Euston Road underpass in London over 250 miles away and he dies after being rushed to the hospital. While Peter's injuries are consistent with a fall from a great height, his body and clothing appear to have been washed, suggesting that he was seriously injured at another location before someone placed his body on the underpass. While an inquest jury rules that Peter's death was murder, there are no conclusive answers about who killed him or why he made a lengthy trip to London to begin with. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a truly baffling mystery from the United Kingdom about a victim who wound up dead at a location they had no known connection to. April 16, 2003. Kendall County, Texas. 54-year old Colonel Philip Shue, who works as a staff psychiatrist for the United States Air Force, leaves his residence to drive to work. Two-and-a-half hours later, Colonel Shue's car is seen driving erratically down the interstate before it crashes into some trees and Shue is found dead in the driver's seat. Even though his death is ruled to be a staged suicide, there are a number of suspicious discrepancies, as duct tape is wrapped around Shue's wrists and feet, a large gash is carved into his chest, and both of his nipples have been removed. There is suspicion that Shue's ex-wife had him tortured and killed in order to cash in on some life insurance policies, but even though a judge later makes a public ruling at a civil trial that Shue was the victim of a homicide, his official cause of death is never changed. Did Colonel Shue intentionally crash his car and take his own life, or did was killed while attempting to escape from someone who did him harm? We're going to explore both sides of this perplexing case on this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, which chronicles one of the most bizarre unexplained deaths you'll ever hear about. May 3, 2002. Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Seven-year old Alexis Patterson is walked to school by her stepfather, who claims that he last sees her crossing the street and heading in the direction of the school playground. Even though numerous students report seeing Alexis crying on the playground that day, she never attends any of her classes and is eventually reported missing. January 10, 1999. Moscow, Idaho. While attending a party at an apartment complex, 25-year old University of Idaho theatre student Wil Hendrick vanishes without explanation and his abandoned car is soon discovered downtown. Three-and-a-half years later, Wil's skull and jawbone are found in a rural wooded area and even though his exact cause of death cannot be determined, he is ruled to be the victim of a homicide. Since Wil was gay, it is speculated that his murder might have been a hate crime. While investigators explore a number of different angles, including the involvement of a truck driver who had once worked for Wil's partner, no conclusive answers are ever found. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the perplexing unsolved death of a beloved stage actor. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Moscow Police Department at (208) 882-2677. December 17, 1993. Merced, California. 27-year old Paul Armstrong, a tow truck operator employed by RTS Towing, vanishes without explanation from his home. Later that day, 34-year old Steven Lombard, another tow truck operator from the same company, goes to the towing yard to pick up his paycheque before he also disappears and his abandoned pick-up truck is found in a K-Mart parking lot the following morning. Over 15 years later, the owner of RTS Towing, Randal Wright, becomes a person of interest in the disappearance of his 50-year old estranged wife, Karen Wright, who vanishes from their vacation home in Mexico. While there is suspicion that Randal might have been involved in all of these disappearances, no trace of any of the victims is ever found. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will be covering a trio of unsolved missing persons cases and explore whether or not they are actually connected to each other. After that… the trail went cold. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Merced County Sheriff's Office at (209) 385-7445. Thanks Ana Luisa. March 14, 1998. Roger Mills County, Oklahoma. 39-year old Leonard Dirickson prepares breakfast for his son, Jared, before a man driving a pick-up truck shows up at their ranch. After Leonard goes outside and speaks to the driver, he tells Jared that the man is interested in looking at one of his stud horses and he will accompany him to the locations where they are being kept. After Leonard climbs into the pick-up truck and leaves, he does not return and is eventually reported missing. Even though there are a couple of reported sightings to suggest that Leonard might still be alive, he cannot be found and the driver of the pick-up truck is never identified. Could Leonard Dirickson have staged his own disappearance or did he become the victim of foul play? And if he was murdered, what could the motive have been? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a truly perplexing missing persons case and we'll also take some time to briefly examine the unsolved disappearance of 56-year old Lee Young, who vanished from Scottsdale, Arizona in May 1990. If you have any information on the disappearance of Leonard Dirickson, please contact the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation at 1-800-522-8017. October 25, 1978. Las Vegas, Nevada. Six-year old Cary Sayegh disappears from his schoolyard during lunchtime recess and a student reports seeing Cary being forced into a vehicle by a man. Hours later, the Sayegh family receives a phone call from a kidnapper demanding a sizable ransom for Cary's safe return, but the caller never makes contact with them again. A man named Jerry Burgess draws suspicion from the authorities when he keeps inserting himself into the investigation and he is eventually charged with Cary's kidnapping in 1981. However, Burgess winds up being acquitted of the kidnapping charge at his trial and all attempts to find Cary are unsuccessful. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we chronicle the frustrating story of an unsolved ransom kidnapping which would become one of the infamous cold cases in the history of Las Vegas. July 9, 1970. Lansing, Michigan. 16-year old Laurie Murninghan, the daughter of the city's former mayor, is abducted from her workplace by a black male during a robbery gone wrong. Eleven days later, Laurie's decomposed body is discovered in a remote swampy pond and her cause of death is determined to be manual strangulation. Since Laurie's employer witnessed the abduction, she picks out a promising suspect from a photo line-up who has an extensive criminal record. However, the authorities do not believe they have enough evidence to arrest this man, so the murder is never solved. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover the unsolved abduction and murder of Laurie Murningham and we will also briefly discuss another cold case involving the murder of 14-year old Karen Oatley, which took place in Lansing nine years later. Special thanks to listener Michelle Beleski for narrating the opening of this episode. August 12, 1989. Halifax, Nova Scotia. After her shift ends 40 minutes earlier than scheduled, 19-year old Kimberly McAndrew clocks out and leaves her workplace before she vanishes without a trace. Over the years, investigators check out a number of different leads and even consult with a so-called “psychic detective”, but fail to find any conclusive answers about what happened to Kim. Even though a sex offender named Andrew Paul Johnson is looked at as a potential suspect in Kim's disappearance and a couple of other unsolved murders from the Halifax area, there is no conclusive evidence to implicate him. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we travel back to our podcast's home country of Canada to explore one of the most prominent unsolved missing persons cases from the province of Nova Scotia. February 27, 1995. Springfield, Missouri. The bodies of 35-year old Cheryl Feeney and her two children – six-year old Tyler and 19-month old Jennifer – are all discovered inside their separate bedrooms at their residence. Cheryl and Tyler have been bludgeoned to death while Jennifer was strangled and the house is completely ransacked. Even though the family's 35-year old patriarch, Jon Feeney, was attending a conference at a resort 90 miles away, investigators suspect that he drove back home in the middle of the night to commit the crime before driving back to the resort to fabricate an alibi for himself. One year later, Jon is charged with three counts of murder, but since no conclusive evidence links him to the crime scene, he winds up being acquitted at trial. Did Jon Feeney get away with the murders of his wife and children or was someone else responsible? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the controversial saga of the Feeney family murders. August 22, 1992. Brandon, Mississippi. While driving his girlfriend home, 18-year old Andre Jones is stopped at a police sobriety checkpoint and is arrested on a number of charges after his pick-up truck is determined to be stolen. Andre is transferred to the Simpson County Jail, but over 19 hours after his arrival, he is found hanging by one of his own shoelaces in a holding cell's shower stall and the authorities rule his death to be a suicide. However, since Andre's mother and stepfather were prominent black activists in the community, they believe he was the victim of a racially motivated murder and cover-up. A federal investigation is launched to explore a number of suspicious hanging deaths which took place in various Mississippi jails during this time period, but no conclusive evidence is found to overturn Andre's suicide ruling. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the tragic and controversial death of Andre Jones. May 21, 1983. Yukon, Canada. The remains of a male homicide victim are discovered in a shallow grave in a remote area and since he cannot be identified, he becomes known as the “Dawson City John Doe”. Thirty-eight years later, DNA testing identifies the victim as 46-year old Theodore Kampf, who had left his home in New Jersey in 1981 to make a cross-country road trip to Canada before he disappeared. It turns out that an unknown individual cashed Theodore's traveller's cheques and stole his pick-up truck before abandoning it in Montana, but the actual circumstances of how Theodore was killed are unclear. June 23, 1989. Winnipeg, Manitoba. After completing his shift, 20-year old Patrick Rosner vanishes without a trace and his abandoned car is discovered two blocks away from his workplace. One year later, skeletal remains are found in a remote field over 220 kilometres away and the victim is initially believed to be female. However, in 2012, DNA testing shows that the remains actually belong to a male and he is eventually identified as Patrick Rosner, but no one knows how he wound up dead at that location. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover a pair of Canadian cases involving male victims whose remains were discovered a great distance away from their hometowns, but their deaths remain unsolved. Special thanks to listener Natalie Galloway for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information about the death of Theodore Kampf, please call the Yukon RCMP's Historic Case tip line at (867) 667-5500. If you have any information about the death of Patrick Rosner, please contact the Manitoba RCMP's Historical Case Unit at (204) 984-6447 or call Manitoba Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). April 15, 2005. Bellefonte, Pennsylvania. After taking the day off work and leaving on a road trip, 59-year old Centre County District Attorney Ray Gricar fails to return home and is reported missing. The following day, Ray's abandoned car is discovered 60 miles away in the town of Lewisburg, parked across the street from an antiques mall. Over the course of the next several months, Ray's county-issued work laptop and its hard drive are discovered in the nearby Susquehanna River, but the hard drive is too damaged to recover any data. A number of different theories are pushed forward, which include Ray disappeared voluntarily, completing suicide by jumping into the river, or becoming the victim of foul play, possibly in connection to the infamous Penn State child sex abuse scandal. However, there is no conclusive evidence pointing to any of these theories and Ray Gricar is never found. After 268 full-length episodes and 32 minisodes, “The Trail Went Cold” has finally reached the milestone of our 300th episode and to commemorate the occasion, we are covering one of our most highly requested cold cases. February 1, 1999. DeSoto County, Mississippi. While living in a farmhouse with her two children and her boyfriend, 27-year old Katherine Lowery vanishes without explanation. Months later, Katherine's boyfriend takes the children and abruptly moves to Wyoming, but he winds up being arrested when Katherine's daughter accuses him of sexual abuse. It turns out the boyfriend has been living under an alias and his real name is Steven DeLoge. Investigators soon learn that Steven's 23-year old half-sister, Elizabeth Eisel, also vanished under suspicious circumstances in Bellevue, Washington in September 1985. Even though Steven goes to prison for multiple counts of sexual assault, he fails to provide any answers about what actually happened to Elizabeth and Katherine. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a truly bizarre story involving two women who went missing in different states over 13 years apart. If you have any information on the disappearance of Elizabeth Eisel, please contact the Bellevue Police Department at (425) 452-6917. If you have any information about the disappearance of Katherine Lowery, please contact the DeSoto County Sheriff's Department at (662) 469-8500. June 11, 1955. Salt Lake City, Utah. 22-year old Jocelyn Hickenlooper, who suffers from developmental disabilities and scoliosis, vanishes without explanation from her home. Over two weeks later, Jocelyn's decomposed body is discovered in a shallow grave located near Parley's Canyon. After a two-year investigation, a suspect named Bernt Murphy, who also has developmental disabilities, confesses to killing Jocelyn. Even after Bernt recants his confession and the murder charge against him is dropped, a district court judge rules Bernt to be legally insane and he is committed to the Utah State Hospital. When the Utah Supreme Court overturns this decision in 1988, Bernt is released from the hospital, but due to a number of troubling inconsistencies in his own original confession, there is a lot of doubt about whether he was actually responsible for Jocelyn's murder. Did Bernt Murphy kill Jocelyn Hickenlooper, or was he nothing more than a convenient scapegoat while the real perpetrator got away with it? This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” marks the first time we have covered a cold case from Utah, which means podcast has now officially explored at least one unsolved mystery from all fifty American states. June 11, 1962. San Francisco, California. 35-year old Frank Morris, 32-year old John Anglin and his 31-year old brother, Clarence Anglin, attempt an elaborate escape from the Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on Alcatraz Island. After sneaking out of their cells during the night, the three convicts enter the water in order to cross San Francisco Bay on a homemade inflatable raft, but an extensive manhunt fails to find them. While the authorities are inclined to believe the escapees drowned, certain pieces of evidence, including a photograph that was allegedly taken of the Anglin brothers in Brazil in 1975, suggest they might have survived. In Part One of our special six-anniversary episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we shared the basic facts of the Alcatraz escape. This week, in Part Two, we shall explore all the different theories surrounding the escape attempt and determine the likelihood of whether or not any of the three missing convicts could have gotten away with it. If you have any information about this case, please contact the U.S. Marshals Service's San Francisco office at (415) 436-7677. February 14, 1985. Colorado Springs, Colorado. The bodies of 37-year old Cassandra Rundle and her two children, 12-year old Detrick Sturm and 10-year old Melanie Sturm, are discovered inside their respective bedrooms at their residence. The two females were sexually assaulted and beaten and all three victims have been strangled to death. Since Cassandra had placed some personal ads in a local newspaper and received responses from a number of men, there is speculation that this might be connected to the crime. Years later, Philip Wilkinson, an inmate serving time on death row for the similar murders of another family, is looked at as a possible suspect, but there is no conclusive evidence to implicate him or anyone else. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore an unsolved Valentine's Day cold case involving a mother and her children which is sometimes referred to as the “Lonely Hearts Murders”. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Colorado Springs Police Department at (719) 444-7000 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). December 31, 2010. Wilmington, Delaware. The body of 66-year old Jack Wheeler is discovered in a trash heap at the Cherry Island Landfill and his cause of death is determined to be blunt force trauma. Days earlier, Jack had left his residence in New York City to travel to Delaware and numerous eyewitnesses would report seeing Jack at numerous locations, displaying erratic behaviour which may have been caused by his struggles with bipolar disorder. It is believed that Jack's body was transported to the landfill after he wound up inside a dumpster which was picked up by a garbage truck, but even though investigators think his injuries are consistent with a homicide, the exact circumstances of how Jack died are unclear. Was Jack Wheeler actually the victim of foul play or was his death a tragic accident brought on by a mental health crisis? December 26, 1983. Austin, Texas. After leaving her workplace, 39-year old Gracie Nash vanishes without a trace and her abandoned car is soon discovered with a large amount of blood inside. Just over one month later, Gracie's brother, 43-year old John Davis Jr., is fatally shot outside his residence. Suspicion falls upon a woman named Naomi Easley, who had launched a campaign of harassment and violence against the victims' brother, Melvin Davis, after a tumultuous break-up. Even though Naomi eventually goes to prison for another murder, no evidence links her to Gracie's disappearance or John's death. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we detail the tragic story of a family who lost two siblings just over one month apart and never received conclusive answers about what happened. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Austin Police Department at (512) 974-5000. June 23, 1997. San Francisco, California. After completing her shift at a coffee shop at the Crocker Galleria, 18-year old Kristen Modafferi vanishes without a trace. Even though co-workers report seeing Kristen with a blonde woman at the mall, this woman is never identified, and a police bloodhound tracks Kristen's scent to the edge of the Pacific Ocean at Lands End over six miles away. Weeks later, a man named Jon Onuma phones in a fake tip in which he falsely accuses two women of murdering Kristen, but even though Onuma does a number of suspicious things and multiple women accuse him of abuse, no conclusive evidence can be found to link him to Kristen's disappearance. Was Kristen Modafferi harmed by Jon Onuma? If not, then how did she wind up going missing? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the perplexing disappearance of a young university student where all the pieces of the puzzle just don't seem to fit together. August 19, 1992. Menasha, Wisconsin. After leaving her workplace, 20-year old Laurie Depies drives to her boyfriend's apartment complex and parks her car before she vanishes without a trace. Even though witnesses heard her vehicle pull into the lot, they do not report hearing or seeing anything unusual and the only evidence is a cup of soda left on top of the car's roof. Eighteen years later, a convicted kidnapper named Larry DeWayne Hall confesses to abducting and murdering Laurie, but a search for her remains turns up nothing and no corroborating evidence is found to support his story. Was Larry DeWayne Hall actually responsible for Laurie Depies' disappearance or could she have been abducted and harmed by someone she knew? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unsolved disappearance of a young woman who seemingly vanished into thin air during a very narrow window of time. Since “The Trail Went Cold” originally launched in February 2016, we have featured over 300 cold cases and unsolved mysteries on the podcast and a decent amount of them have either wound up being solved or had significant developments take place. Two years ago, we released a special “update” episode which detailed a lot of these developments, but there have since been many more new updates to share. Examples include the identification of the Sumter County Does; an arrest in the murders of Bobbie Jo Oberholtzer and Annette Schnee, a.k.a. “The Orange Sock Murders”; the overturning of a wrongful conviction for the murders of Harold and Thelma Swain, and a number of shocking revelations in the murder of 12-year old Jonelle Matthews. These are just a few of the cases we are going to discuss in our second special “update” episode of “The Trail Went Cold”. Christmas Eve 1924. Babbs Switch, Oklahoma. A fire breaks out at a Christmas party taking place at a schoolhouse and claims the lives of 36 people. The remains of one of the presumed victims, three-year old Mary Elizabeth Edens, cannot be found and since Mary's aunt recalls handing the child to an unknown person, her family believes Mary might have been abducted. Over 32 years later, evidence is found to suggest that a California woman named Grace Reynolds might be Mary and she winds up having a reunion with the Edens family. However, in 1999, it is revealed that additional evidence was uncovered to indicate that Grace was not actually Mary after all, so the actual fate of the missing child remains unknown. For this year's final holiday-themed episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we will be exploring a tragic Christmas Eve mystery that has gone from unsolved to solved to back unsolved again over the course of a century. December 5, 1998. Klamath County, Oregon. Eight-year old Derrick Engebretson travels to Winema National Forest with his father and grandfather in order to get a Christmas tree, but winds up becoming separated from them. An extensive search effort fails to find Derrick, though an eyewitness reports having seen a boy matching Derrick's description struggling with an unidentified man near the road. Years later, a convicted child predator named Frank Milligan confesses to Derrick's murder, but he fails to lead authorities to his body and soon recants his confession, so Derrick remains a missing person. August 31, 1975. Chain of Ponds, Maine. While on a camping trip with his family at the Natanis Point Campground, four-year old Kurt Newton sees his father driving away from the campsite to go chop some firewood and decides to follow him on his tricycle. A short time later, Kurt's abandoned tricycle is found eight-tenths of a mile away next to a dumpsite, but Kurt himself has disappeared and an extensive search fails to turn up any trace of the boy. Since the campground is located only six miles from the United States-Canada border, Kurt's family fears that he may have been abducted and taken into Quebec, but there is no evidence to indicate what happened. May 14, 1991. Vidor, Texas. 34-year old Kathy Page is found dead inside her car after an apparent crash into a drainage ditch just over 100 yards from her residence. While the scene resembles an accident, the evidence shows that Kathy was actually strangled to death before the crash was staged. Since Kathy's marriage to her estranged husband, Steve Page, was falling apart and there were a number of suspicious actions on his part, Kathy's family believe that Steve was responsible for her death. Out of frustration, they put up a series of billboards accusing Steve of murder and the local authorities of orchestrating a cover-up, but no charges are ever filed. Was Kathy Page killed by her husband? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a controversial cold case which was the inspiration for the critically acclaimed film, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”. October 8, 2009. Latimer County, Oklahoma. 44-year old Bobby Jamison, his 40-year old wife, Sherilynn Jamison, and their six-year old daughter, Madyson Jamison, leave their home to go look at a plot of land in a remote mountainous area, but never return. Eight days later, their abandoned pick-up truck is discovered on a dirt road located thirty miles from their residence, but even though the family's dog and many of their personal items are locked inside the truck and a bag containing $32,000 is hidden under the driver's seat, the Jamisons are missing. In November 2013, the skeletal remains of Bobby, Sherilynn and Madyson are discovered in a wooded area less than three miles from where their truck had been parked, but since the authorities are unable to determine an exact cause of death, no one knows what actually happened to them. Were the Jamisons killed by an outside party? Could have they have orchestrated a murder-suicide? Did they simply wander off and succumb to the elements? This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” explores a truly baffling case involving the disappearance and death of a family which has yet to find a conclusive resolution. Special thanks to listener Jenny Kapur for narrating the opening of this episode. If you have any information about this case, please contact the Latimer County Sheriff's Office at (918) 465-2161. May 25, 2000. Mercer County, Pennsylvania. After last being seen at a convenience store, 46-year old Sandra Kay Baker supposedly phones her fiancée, Billy Crea Jr., to say that she is in danger and cannot return home, but she is never heard from again. Five years later, Billy is named as a suspect in Sandy's disappearance after a private detective he had once hired named Clifford Aley is charged with lying to law enforcement. Aley reveals that he heard Billy confess to Sandy's murder, but there are a number of credibility issues with his story, so without a body or any other corroborating evidence, no charges are ever filed against Billy. Was Sandra Kay Baker murdered by her spouse? If so, did Clifford Aley have direct involvement in the crime? This week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold” explores a controversial missing persons case which has yet to reach a conclusive resolution after two decades. June 15, 1994. Loxahatchee, Florida. 31-year old Moses Lall and his 36-year old aunt, Lila Buerattan, are discovered to be missing from their ranch, where they run a business breeding and selling exotic birds. They were last heard from eleven days earlier and one of their employees, Daljeet “Hari” Gobin, had reportedly shared a story about seeing them get abducted at gunpoint by two men. Investigators soon learn that Gobin was picked up by police in Georgia while driving Moses' van and using his driver's licence, but he jumps bail and disappears before he can be questioned and is never tracked down. Did Hari Gobin actually witness Moses and Lila get kidnapped or was he personally responsible for their disappearances? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore an unsolved cold case involving three missing people – two victims and one person of interest – who have not been heard from in three decades. June 12, 1987. Flagstaff, Arizona. After finishing her shift at the Flagstaff Medical Center, 40-year old Navajo woman Sarah Saganitso never returns home and her nude body is found in a nearby wooded area the following day. Her exact cause of death is asphyxiation via suffocation and there appear to be bite marks around her left breast. Nearly two months later, a suspect named George Abney is charged with the murder after making a confession, but he maintains that it was coerced. At trial, Abney's defence team alleges that the crime is a ritualistic killing linked to witchcraft which may have been committed by a Navajo “skin-walker” and the jury ends up finding Abney “not guilty”. Was George Abney actually responsible for the murder of Sarah Saganitso? Or was the real killer a practitioner of Navajo witchcraft? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore a bizarre case which may be the only documented murder trial in which the crime was blamed on a “skin-walker”. Nutley, New Jersey. 36-year old Susan Walsh leaves her son in the care of her estranged husband and says she needs to step out to make some phone calls, but she never returns to her apartment and is not heard from again. At the time, Susan had been working as a freelance journalist and an exotic dancer, but was also struggling with substance abuse and mental health issues. The investigation into Susan's disappearance explores a number of different angles – including Russian mobsters, underground vampire clubs, and an obsessive stalker – and even looks into the possibility that she ran away voluntarily, but there are no conclusive answers. On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we cover a perplexing missing persons case which has remained unsolved for the past 25 years. February 14, 1945. Lower Quinton, England. 74-year old farm labourer Charles Walton leaves his home in order to spending the day slashing hedges on the slopes of Meon Hill. Later that evening, Charles' body is discovered next to the hedgerow and he has been beaten with his walking stick, had his throat slashed with a billhook, and been stabbed with a pitchfork. While the original investigation turns up a potential suspect, there is not enough evidence to implicate him, but as the years go on, Charles' death becomes surrounded with stories involving witchcraft and the occult. Was Charles Walton's murder some sort of ritualistic killing? If not, what could the actual motive have been? On this month's first Halloween-themed episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore an infamous unsolved cold case from the United Kingdom which has been clouded by sensationalistic urban legends. Over one year later, Jimmie Terrell Smith, who had previously lived in the upstairs apartment at Yasmin's residence, is charged with a series of sex crimes and mentions of Smith's name are found in Yasmin's diary. July 19, 1996. Westwego, Louisiana. After leaving her apartment to walk to a supermarket, 14-year old Crystal Champagne fails to return and is found strangled to death in a wooded area the following evening. When Crystal's 22-year old step-cousin, Damon Thibodeaux, is interrogated by police, he confesses to her murder and is subsequently convicted and sentenced to death. However, Damon maintains that his confession was coerced and none of the physical evidence from the crime matches him, so after 16 years of incarceration, Damon's conviction is vacated and he is released from death row. But who was actually responsible for the death of Crystal Champagne? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the tragic story of an horrific murder which led to a wrongful conviction. March 27, 2004. London, England. 50-year old Richard Lancelyn Green, considered to be the world's foremost scholar on Sherlock Holmes, is discovered dead on top of his bed inside his flat. His cause of death is determined to be asphyxiation, as he was garrotted with a shoelace which was tightened around his neck with a wooden spoon. Prior to his death, Lancelyn Green told people his life was in danger over a dispute involving a collection of rare documents from author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, but since there is no definitive evidence pointing towards homicide or suicide, the coroner returns an open verdict on his death. Was Richard Lancelyn Green the victim of foul play or did he intentionally stage a very unusual and elaborate suicide? On this week's episode of “The Trail Went Cold”, we explore the unexplained death of a Sherlock Holmes expert which resembles a scene from a fictional murder mystery. October 28, 1991. Wheeling, Illinois. A 911 dispatcher receives an anonymous call from a payphone by a man asking for medical attention for a woman. When paramedics arrive at the address the caller provides, they discover the unconscious body of 27-year old exotic dancer Jamie Santos on her bedroom floor and it turns out she has been suffocated with a pillow. There is ambiguity about whether the caller was Jamie's killer or an innocent bystander who found her body, but he cannot be identified and Jamie's murder is never solved. May 1, 1991. Palm Beach County, Florida. The Miami Police Department receives a 911 call from a Spanish-speaking man calling himself “Antonio”, who claims he had witnessed the brutal murder of an African-American woman in a remote sugar can field one week earlier. When police check out the location Antonio described, they find the decomposed body of 26-year old Rebecca Young, who was fatally attacked with a machete. Even though investigators eventually turn up a promising suspect, they lack the evidence to make an arrest and the mysterious “Antonio” is never tracked down. New York City. 54-year old Michael Sullivan and his 36-year old girlfriend, Camden Sylvia, vanish without explanation from their loft in Manhattan and are reported missing six days later.
