The problem with an independent IFC is something that needs to be discussed. Jim Piazza is the father of Tim Piazza, who died as a result of a fraternity hazing event in February 2017. Jim and his wife, Evelyn, are natives of New Jersey and have become anti-hazing advocates since their son's passing. In that role, they are working with universities and national fraternities to make Greek life safer. In episode 551 of the Fraternity Foodie Podcast, we find out all the details of what happened to Tim Piazza in February of 2017 at Penn State University, whether Jim feels that justice was served, whether the Timothy Piazza Anti-Hazing Law will be effective in deterring students from engaging in hazing behavior, what his reaction was when the Stop Campus Hazing Act passed into federal law, how we can get students to come forward and report hazing incidents, why Jim was so disappointed when he saw the independent IFC form at Penn State, Jim's advice to other students considering an independent IFC on other campuses, what questions students (and parents) should be asking when they join a fraternity or sorority, and what else we can be doing to eliminate hazing.

February 4th: Death of Tim Piazza (2017) Going into college can be an exciting yet terrifying moment in your life. Everything is new, everything is different and, for the first time in your life, you are 100% free and clear to make all of the decisions that will impact your life. For many, that decision is to join a fraternity or sorority and gain friendships that will last a lifetime. On February 4th 2017 a young man hoping to join one of those fraternities took part in an age-old tradition that, you would hope, would not exist in the year 2017. The dangerous ritual of hazing.  https://www.post-gazette.com/news/crime-courts/2020/08/28/Former-Penn-State-fraternity-member-sentenced-in-death-of-Timothy-Piazza/stories/202008280105#:~:text=%E2%80%94%20A%20former%20Penn%20State%20fraternity,the%20Beta%20Theta%20Pi%20house., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Tim_Piazza, https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/04/03/penn-state-timothy-piazza-first-jail-terms-issued-hazing-death/3353467002/, https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/11/a-death-at-penn-state/540657/, https://www.centredaily.com/news/local/community/state-college/article225340915.html, https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/parents-penn-state-student-timothy-piazza-who-died-during-pledge-n966071, https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2019/05/22/sentences-reduced-former-penn-state-fraternity-brothers-piazza-hazing-case, https://abcnews.go.com/US/penn-state-fraternity-brothers-sentenced-pledges-hazing-death/story?id=62132847, https://www.mycentraljersey.com/story/news/crime/2019/08/26/tim-piazza-case-fraternity-house-manager-gets-two-years-probation-5-000-fine/2120038001/

On this episode of Case In Point, Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law, talks about the Center County PA, Grand Jury report where they investigated the death of Timothy Piazza.   The Grand Jury’s report, linked below, outlines Penn State’s responsibility in the death of Tim Piazza. The report highlights the fact that Penn State knew there was a hazing problem since at least 2009, when they investigated the death of Joe Dodo at the same fraternity that Timothy Piazza died at.   Penn State is not the only institution with problems with hazing, as we’ve seen, other institutions like LSU, UWF, FSU, and even the Military. However, Penn State is in the spot light because it has fostered a culture that not only supports, but encourages hazing and the mistreatment of their students.   You can see the full press conference here: https://www.facebook.com/PennLive/videos/10155254347706647/ The Grand Jury’s report can be found here: https://www.scribd.com/document/367258824/Centre-County-grand-jury-findings-on-Penn-State-fraternities-hazing-and-alcohol#from_embed   As always, let us know what you think!     Intro Music: 5 Cents Back by Audionautix is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution license (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) Artist: http://audionautix.com/

On Case In Point, Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law, talks about a topic in the news that has significant impact on our society. In this clip, Aaron discusses the recent ruling by the Centre Country PA court. The ruling dismissing all the most serious charges against the fraternity members, leaving only the misdemeanor charges.   Tim Pizza was a freshman at Penn State University in the process of pledging the fraternity Beta Theta Pi. On February 4th 2017, he tragically passed away after a night of hazing that resulted in Timothy drinking incredible amounts of liquor, falling down a set of stairs, and being left unattended for 12 hours with life threatening injuries. By the time medical professionals were called, it was too late.   After Tim passed away, 18 of his fraternity brothers were charged with various crimes, including manslaughter. This past week, a judge dismissed the manslaughter charges against 8 of the men charged, leaving the alcohol violations, hazing, and reckless endangerment charges against 12 of the brothers.     Disclosure: Freiwald Law Represents Penn State Whistleblower James Vivenzio.   To see the full article about the most recent developments click here. On a tragic and sobering edition of After Hours AM/The Criminal Code — with hosts Joel Sturgis, Eric Olsen, and secret weapon, forensic psychologist Dr. Clarissa Cole — we peer into the shocking February death of Penn State fraternity pledge Tim Piazza after an alcohol-saturated hazing ritual that has resulted in criminal charges against 18 Beta Theta Pi fraternity members. We talk with journalist Charlie Thompson, who is covering the case for the Patriot-News and PennLive, and author/social critic Caitlin Flanagan, whose article “The Dark Power of Fraternities” in The Atlantic is a classic in the field. Caitlin and Charlie will join us in hour 2; Hour 1, Clarissa will lead us through the week’s most notable True Crime news. Caitlin Flanagan Caitlin Flanagan’s 2014 article for THE ATLANTIC, “The Dark Power of Fraternities” is a scabrous and at times hilarious look into the dangers and allure of fraternity life, the contradictions of freedom and conformity, and their seemingly intractable role in American college life. By the way, hazing isn’t close to being the most dangerous frat activity. Flanagan began her magazine-writing career, in 2001 with a series of extended book reviews about the conflicts at the heart of modern domestic life as it is lived by professional-class women. Flanagan quickly established herself as a highly entertaining social critic unafraid to take on self-indulgence and political correctness, and her reviews provide penetrating and witheringly funny observations about the sexes and their discontents. Her ATLANTIC articles have been named as finalists for the National Magazine Award five times, and her essay “Confessions of a Prep School College Counselor” was included in the 2002 compilation of Best American Magazine Writing. Her work has also been included in Best American Essays 2003 and Best American Magazine Writing 2003. She is th
