Penn State first-year student Timothy Piazza was the kind of guy everybody wanted to be around. But in 2017, Tim's parents, Jim and Evelyn Piazza, faced the unthinkable when Tim died after being forced to consume a lethal quantity of alcohol during a fraternity hazing ritual called the Gauntlet. Jim and Evelyn took part in the new documentary “House of Horrors: Secrets of College Greek Life” (now streaming on A&E) and talked candidly with me about the lack of accountability on the part of the fraternity and the university, the legal battle they waged after Tim's death, and the measures now put in place as a result of their waking nightmare. Surveillance video shows Santulli lying on a couch for hours, with people walking by, even moving Santulli back onto the couch when he fell off. Ultimately the teen is taken to University Hospital suffering cardiac arrest. February 4th: Death of Tim Piazza (2017) Going into college can be an exciting yet terrifying moment in your life. Everything is new, everything is different and, for the first time in your life, you are 100% free and clear to make all of the decisions that will impact your life. For many, that decision is to join a fraternity or sorority and gain friendships that will last a lifetime. On February 4th 2017 a young man hoping to join one of those fraternities took part in an age-old tradition that, you would hope, would not exist in the year 2017. The dangerous ritual of hazing. https://www.post-gazette.com/news/crime-courts/2020/08/28/Former-Penn-State-fraternity-member-sentenced-in-death-of-Timothy-Piazza/stories/202008280105#:~:text=%E2%80%94%20A%20former%20Penn%20State%20fraternity,the%20Beta%20Theta%20Pi%20house., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Tim_Piazza, https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/04/03/penn-state-timothy-piazza-first-jail-terms-issued-hazing-death/3353467002/, https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/11/a-death-at-penn-state/540657/, https://www.centredaily.com/news/local/community/state-college/article225340915.html, https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/parents-penn-state-student-timothy-piazza-who-died-during-pledge-n966071, https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2019/05/22/sentences-reduced-former-penn-state-fraternity-brothers-piazza-hazing-case, https://abcnews.go.com/US/penn-state-fraternity-brothers-sentenced-pledges-hazing-death/story?id=62132847, https://www.mycentraljersey.com/story/news/crime/2019/08/26/tim-piazza-case-fraternity-house-manager-gets-two-years-probation-5-000-fine/2120038001/

With about three months to go before the midterm elections, Facebook has identified an ongoing political influence campaign on the social media network. Facebook has admitted that it is still early in their investigation so they could not identify who the bad actors were, but it did resemble the activity of Russian interference in 2016. Kyle Cheney, Congressional reporter for Politico joins us for more on how these pages sought to inflame social and political tensions. Next, Sara Fischer, media reporter for Axios joins us to talk about media bias. We know there is left and right bias in politics, but in the mainstream media it can extend beyond that to stories on terrorism, missing minorities, even climate change. A lot of the times decisions in big national newsrooms may be made because of financial pressures or wanting the next big viral story. It might be time to take a closer look at your local news or even podcasts… Finally, an update in the hazing death of Timothy Piazza, the Penn State student who was neglected by his frat brothers and didn't get medical help until the next morning after falling down 15 feet of stairs. Mike Deak, reporter for the Courier News tells us about Ryan Burke, the “rush chair” who gave Piazza vodka during the hazing ritual and is only getting three months of probation. On this episode of Case In Point, Aaron Freiwald, Managing Partner of Freiwald Law, talks about the Center County PA, Grand Jury report where they investigated the death of Timothy Piazza. The Grand Jury’s report, linked below, outlines Penn State’s responsibility in the death of Tim Piazza. The report highlights the fact that Penn State knew there was a hazing problem since at least 2009, when they investigated the death of Joe Dodo at the same fraternity that Timothy Piazza died at. Penn State is not the only institution with problems with hazing, as we’ve seen, other institutions like LSU, UWF, FSU, and even the Military. However, Penn State is in the spot light because it has fostered a culture that not only supports, but encourages hazing and the mistreatment of their students. You can see the full press conference here: https://www.facebook.com/PennLive/videos/10155254347706647/ The Grand Jury’s report can be found here: https://www.scribd.com/document/367258824/Centre-County-grand-jury-findings-on-Penn-State-fraternities-hazing-and-alcohol#from_embed As always, let us know what you think!
