Today's episode is rated a 3 (on my Serious Crime Scale). With March Madness still somewhat fresh in our minds and brackets either busted or celebrated, I figured it was the perfect time to explore a different kind of madness – one that doesn't involve murder, but still raises serious questions about integrity, pressure, and the high-stakes world of college basketball. In 1994, Stevin “Hedake” Smith was the star point guard at Arizona State University and the leading returning scorer in the Pac-10. But off the court, he was buried in gambling debt. His way out? A dangerous gamble of his own – fixing games in one of the biggest point-shaving scandals in NCAA history. This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale). Now, as you can probably tell from the title on your screen, this is an UPDATE to a previous episode I covered about a year ago, back in March 2024. That episode, Chronicle 72, was titled “Suspension Sparks Murder.”In that episode, I told you the chilling story of Sydney Powell, a college student at the University of Mount Union in Ohio. After being placed on academic suspension for poor grades, Sydney's defense claimed she suffered a psychotic break, which led her to brutally attack and kill her mother, Brenda Powell. But prosecutors argued—and successfully proved in Sydney's September 2023 trial—that she was fully aware of her actions when she beat her mother with an iron skillet and stabbed her roughly 30 times with a steak knife. The jury ultimately found her guilty of murder, and a judge sentenced Sydney Powell, then 23 years old, to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. Now, you might think that would be the end of the story—a conviction, a sentence, and justice served. But as we know, court cases rarely end there. Appeals are a huge part of the process, and in December 2024, an Ohio appeals court made a surprising move: they REVERSED Sydney Powell's conviction for her mother's 2020 murder.Today, I'm bringing you Part 2 of this update in a mini episode, where I will share all the details about the shocking development and where the case stands now, in 2025. This episode is rated a 5 (on my Serious Crime Scale). In March of 2003, 20-year-old community college student Megan McDonald was severely beaten and murdered, and then her lifeless body was dumped in a remote area. Like a real-life “Criminal Minds” story, the Behavioral Analysis Unit, or the BAU (a branch of the FBI), put together a profile of her killer. The BAU determined that Megan's murderer was/is a person with textbook narcissistic personality disorder who couldn't take no for answer. Although they had a good idea of exactly who this person was for years, police never publicly identified Megan's killer – that is, until April 20, 2023. And THIS is where our update comes in. When I first dropped this episode on April 10, 2023, it was just 10 days before police announced that Megan's ex-boyfriend, a man by the name of Edward Holley, had been arrested for her murder. Now, when I first covered this story, all investigators were saying at the time was that they hoped to make an arrest soon… Y'all, I didn't realize they meant like, TEN days away soon… So, that means when I ran the episode, I told the whole story without ever identifying a suspect. In fact, I used the pseudonym of John, instead of using the suspect's real name because I didn't know his real name at the time. So, NOW, I'd like to replay the episode. I'm not going to re-record it, but when you are listening to it this time around (or, perhaps the first time if you're new here), I want you to do so with this guy in mind. Every time I refer to the prime suspect or the pseudonym of John, just know it is this guy, Edward Holley, who police were looking at the whole time. But stick around until the end because not only will I give you additional information about Edward Holley, but as you've probably noticed already from the title of this episode, there is SO much more to this story and SO much more that needs to be told – so much so that I couldn't fit it all into one single episode. I needed to make it a two-parter.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/campus-crime-chronicles/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

When police found 24-year-old University of Florida student Michelle Herndon dead in her home, it appeared that, in an ironic twist of fate, the health-conscious young woman had suddenly and tragically passed away from natural causes. Although rare, situations like these aren't as completely out of the ordinary as one might think. So, investigators began processing the case as such – a bizarre death due to natural circumstances. But the case took a sharp turn when the medical examiner discovered a tiny, meticulous needle prick in Michelle's left arm, which soon led investigators to believe that Michelle had actually been murdered. Ultimately, it would take nearly three years and an international manhunt before her killer would be brought to justice. Listen now to hear the full story. In 1997, Vincennes University student Brook Baker was raped and brutally murdered in her off-campus home. Police interviewed hundreds of potential suspects but were only led to dead ends. That is, until the killer struck again two years later. In 1999, Vincennes University student Erika Norman also was raped and murdered in the same way, and the killer left behind the same type of crime scene. It's one of those truly puzzling stories that will leave you scratching your head, racking your brain, and just really wondering… WHERE IS HE??? In this episode, I tell you the story of University of Massachusetts – Dartmouth student Charles Allen Jr., affectionately known as Charlie to his friends and family. In October of 2007, Charlie made plans to attend a party with his best friend, Mason; but when the two were supposed to meet up on campus to drive to the party together, Charlie never showed. And that wasn't the only odd, out-of-character behavior from Charlie. Earlier that same day, he had a bizarre and frantic conversation with his sister, and he left a separate, panicky, out-of-breath voicemail on each of his parents' cellphones – which was the last time anyone ever heard from him. Charlie has officially been missing since October 12, 2007, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions. But here's where it gets even stranger -- shortly before his disappearance, Charlie legally changed him name to Neo Babson Maximus, adding another layer of complexity to this already perplexing case. The professor, Dr. Amy Bishop, taught at least five different courses in the Department of Biology, and she had been employed at the university since 2003. In 2009, six years after she was hired, Dr. Bishop went through a rigorous tenure application process and review, but her tenure was ultimately denied in March of 2009. This meant that her teaching appointment at the University of Alabama would not be renewed when her contract ended the next year in 2010. This vulnerability becomes stark when young adults navigate relationships without the compass of prior experience. Think about it: this stage of life is often labeled in academic research as emerging adulthood, a time when they're not quite kids, but not fully adults either, and they are just trying to figure things out. In this episode, I unravel the complexities surrounding this vulnerable age group through the story of 18-year-old college freshman Alexandra Kogut, who, for over a year, was in a seemingly picture-perfect relationship with 21-year-old Clayton Whittemore. While their friends and family perceived their relationship as flawless, the reality behind closed doors was far from it. Eventually, Alex and Clayton's relationship took the darkest of turns, which revealed the silent struggles of dating violence – a reality that would ultimately claim a young life.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/campus-crime-chronicles/exclusive-contentAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

In August of 2016, Ithaca College student Anthony Nazaire embarked on what should have been a promising sophomore year as a business administration major. Anthony's journey from a challenging neighborhood in Brooklyn, New York, to college was a testament to his determination. The first in his family to graduate high school and pursue higher education, Anthony aspired to make a mark in the world of finance, with dreams of one day even starting his own bank. But as fate would have it, his aspirations were shattered during a seemingly innocent back-to-school party hosted by a fraternity at Cornell University. When the party was over and party-goers disbursed, the atmosphere took a dark turn, leading to a sudden and chaotic altercation. In a selfless act to protect a friend, Anthony found himself caught in the midst of the melee (may-lay). Tragically, his attempt to save a life cost him his own. Anthony Nazaire was lethally stabbed, and despite efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. But other times, those actions stem from nothing but pure and utter evil. There's simply no explanation other than the fact that the person CHOSE to be violent or commit a heinous crime. It's disgusting and loathsome, and it just plain sucks. This is the story of how one college student became so jealous and allowed so much hate and evil to build up inside of him that he decided he would take another innocent student's life for the sake of taking a life -- for no other explanation than the absolute fact that he wanted to do it. This episode is rated a 4 (on my Serious Crime Scale). The COVID-19 pandemic affected the mental health of college students at very rapid rates. Not only were they navigating the physical health effects of COVID and how it impacted themselves and their loved ones, but they were also having to abruptly adjust to a completely digital world. Just imagine being forced to take courses like statistics and chemistry and molecular biology in a solely online format. They were also forced to move out of their dorms and off campus, not knowing when they would be able to return to their personal belongings and the only “collegiate” atmosphere they knew at the time. The changes and the uncertainty dramatically affected their mental health. For example, depression reported among college students increased by nearly 50% after the start of pandemic, and one in five students reported experiencing suicidal thoughts. The person we're gonna talk about today in this episode, Dane Elkins, is one of these statistics. He was a college student studying at the University of California-Santa Cruz. But in the spring of 2020, 21-year-old Dane decided he couldn't do it anymore. The world of online learning just wasn't his thing. However, as Brittany hung up the phone and made her way inside, an intruder wasn't far behind her. The next call Brittany made was to 9-1-1, but the call was dropped and authorities were never sent to her residence to help. By the time Brittany's fiancé arrived home, it was too late – Brittany had been killed by the intruder.
