This week, the boys get all Tom & Huck and head to the Mississippi River to discuss Jeff Nichols' “Mud”. The random year generator spun 2013, and we decided to follow up our recent “Take Shelter” episode to see how Nichols handled the McConaissance. What we didn't expect was finding some of the best youth performances ever by Tye Sheridan and Jacob Lofland in a Stand-By-Me-Meets-Huckleberry-Finn narrative. What made the American funeral industry what it is today? Why do we embalm? How do societal status & funeral styles overlap? Gary Laderman, PhD, is the Goodrich C. White Prof of Amer Religious History & Cultures at Emory University in Georgia, the author of multiple books & featured on The Mortician: an HBO documentary covering a 1980s funeral home who exploited grieving families. In this episode, you'll hear how funeral rituals went from DIY to the elaborate & long list of menu options today, how those options supported or detracted from family status, the spooky status of the death worker themselves, how embalming changed everything (hello capitalism!) & the growing resistance towards the commodification of death If you liked this episode, you'll also like episode 278: MORBID OR SACRED? He didn't just kill himself… he made sure it worked. In this episode, a Grant, a funeral director's assasistant, shares one of the most disturbing and confusing calls of his life. A man everyone loved. A house that should have been filled with Christmas lights. And a suicide so extreme it didn't make sense. He slit both of his arms open. And then started his car.Just in case. But this story isn't just about how he died. It's about trying to understand why.Why someone who seemed happy would do something so violent. Why some suicides feel impulsive… and others feel calculated. And what goes through your mind when you're standing over the body of someone you actually knew. After years working in a funeral home, Grant has seen death in every form. But some scenes don't leave you. This is one of them. And what happened after the call might be even worse.A desperate lie.A moment of guilt. And the realization that sometimes the living don't handle death much better than the dead. This is a raw, unfiltered, true story from inside the funeral industry. Graphic, honest, and deeply human. ⚠️ Listener discretion advised. This episode contains graphic descriptions and discussions of suicide. $ - This episode was previously locked behind a paywall.

Bromance Month continues with the second in our two part serving of THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN MORTICIAN MURDER in which last week's cliffhanger ending gives way to a gunslinging treasure hunt, small town style. As Christopher and Eric serve up the final two episodes of the series, the bodies keep dropping and the skeletons keep coming out of the closet. Meanwhile, your hosts have questions ranging from the urgent to the mundane. Where did the victim's precious gold bars go? Who sabotaged the vintage cars at the Pioneer Day Parade? Why didn't one of the only gays in town spot the gay twist that defined this bonkers tale? And most importantly, in Eric's view, why didn't the police focus on the potential suspects who most benefited from this crime? You'll never look at turkey pot pie the same way again.
Bromance Month begins in a rugged, mountainous American state about which host Eric Shaw Quinn has some controversial opinions relating to altitude, oxygen uptake and mental health. In part 1 of their the two-part serving of THE ROCKY MOUNTAIN MORTICIAN MURDER, Christopher and Eric deliver episode 1 of the three episode series featuring dueling morticians, missed lunch dates, lesbian moms, abusive sons and a cliffhanger ending that will leave you gasping for some of that thin mountain air and the revelations of Part II. Keep your oxygen masks handy.

Byron Paul Griffy was a pillar to his community in Fowler, Colorado. He owned Griffy Family Funeral Home and brought comfort to countless families during their time of grief. He also served on the Fowler School Board for over 13 years. On October 12th, 2012, one day before his 77th birthday, Bryon was found murdered in his home. When police began the investigation, they uncovered more questions than answers. Bryon's case, and his life, was complicated and made solving his murder difficult. --For early, ad free episodes and monthly exclusive bonus content, join our Patreon! Obviously, we love doing this show. For so many awesome reasons. One of our negative duties we take upon ourselves is the announcements and dedications for those of our fallen Metal comrades. Now its Year's End and we decided we wanted to dedicate this episode saying "Horns Up" for those who left us. Its a tough listen but well worth it. In our "News, Views and Tunes", we discuss vinyl reissues and the Spotify "scrapping" incident. Musically, we crank some Blitzkrieg, Mortician, Necrophagia, Heavy Load, Ragnarok, Virus, Lawnmower Deth, Sudden Impact and we introduce Swedish metallers Blazon Stone in our "Indie Spotlight". Horns Up!

David Sconce was not just a mortician. He was the self-proclaimed "Cremation King of California," running what looked like a booming funeral business. In reality, he operated a cremation cartel built on greed, intimidation, and shocking abuse of the dead.Investigators uncovered mass cremations, stolen prosthetics, and allegations that Sconce's crew pulled gold teeth, sold body parts, and trafficked organs on the black market. The truth unraveled inside his desert crematory, where authorities found evidence of dozens of illegal cremations and widespread mutilation of corpses.Sconce eventually pled guilty to multiple crimes, including illegal cremations, theft, and desecration of bodies. But HBO's new documentary "The Mortician" raises disturbing new questions. At the end of the film, Sconce drops cryptic hints about three unsolved murders, including the poisoning death of rival mortician Tim Waters. Was he bragging? Confessing? Or revealing the true depth of his criminal empire?Follow True Crime Recaps for more disturbing cases that challenge everything we think we know.
Join Sandra for a profound and surprisingly uplifting conversation with Victor M. Sweeney, who CNBC calls "the internet's favorite mortician." You may know him from his viral WIRED videos (with nearly 50 million views) where he compassionately answers questions about death. As a small-town funeral director and author of the new book "Now Departing," Victor walks in the world between the living and the dead every single day. He joins Sandra to discuss how this "privileged view" has shaped his practical, yet deeply spiritual, understanding of the afterlife. He describes himself as a natural skeptic but shares the undeniable experiences—like sun breaking through the clouds at the exact moment of a burial—that have convinced him "it's all real." Victor shares his powerful "origin story" of finding his best friend deceased at age three, and the more recent, devastating loss of his second best friend, Alex, to suicide. He tells a stunning story of the sign he received from Alex immediately after the funeral—a specific, goofy hat that proves, as Victor says, "there are no coincidences." This is a moving conversation that explores the sacred importance of the physical body in grieving, the separation of body and soul, and how openly facing death can help us all "see life a little more brightly." Probably when you think of submarine warfare, WWI or WWII comes to mind. Not… the American Civil War. But oh, they had them back then! Or rather, they had one back then, and it worked exactly one time. Dylan is joined by longtime friend of the show Caitlin Doughty, of Ask a Mortician, to talk about one of their shared obsessions: the candle-lit, hand-cranked, Civil War submarine which has one of the most gruesome undersea histories you can imagine.Find more of Caitlin's work: https://caitlindoughty.com/Watch her doc about the HL Hunley: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiDThvhadssVisit the Hunley for yourself: https://www.hunley.org/ Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Sarah had a run-in at Home Depot where she was offered free plants, and she said no! And now she has regrets for being so honest and having integrity. Susie gives a tribute to her beloved Brian Wilson. We find out why Amelia Earhart wasn't actually a great pilot (seems like the disappearance should've tipped us off), but instead was just ahead of her time in...influencing. Susie explains how Amelia's famous flight has disturbing similarities to the Titan submersible tragedy. We learn about a woman who donated her body to science, but ended up blown to bits by the military. We hear why a funeral home was sending people remains of the strangers instead of their loved ones. We discuss an Olympian who has been kicked off the canoeing team for having an OnlyFans account and Susie thinks she should start an account for people whose kink is being insulted. Our Favorite Picks10:37 - Susie shares her love for the amazing Brian Wilson.18:58 - New Yorker article about Amelia Earhart30:11 - Man donated his mother's body to alzheimer's research, only to find out it was later sold on, and blown up!39:13 - Sarah's airfryer analogy45:15 - Olympic canoer pays for training by showing off his skin-paddle on Only Fans50:13 - Gen-Z and their dislike for opening a tab at the bar54:24 - Susie considers starting an Only Fans accountThe End...
