In this week's episode of PSA: The Mental Health Podcast, Izzy teams up with special guest Alyce Rose for an unfiltered conversation on race, masculinity, grief, and group identity. This Mental Man Monday deep dive unpacks three trending and controversial stories dominating headlines and timelines alike. First, actor Malik Yoba, best known for his role in Why Did I Get Married, recently stated that he no longer identifies as Black, choosing instead to describe himself as "non-white." Alyce and Izzy explore whether this is a protective move in a racially charged society—or a form of self-denial that could create more confusion than clarity, especially in professional spaces.Next, the duo reacts to Houston rapper Sauce Walka, who was shot in Memphis and quickly returned to social media with upbeat posts, despite his close friend being fatally wounded. Is his behavior a trauma response, a street image tactic, or something more concerning? Izzy draws parallels to past incidents involving other rappers, raising critical questions about how grief and survival are handled publicly. Finally, Jim Jones goes viral for his comments on fraternities, likening them to gang culture. Alyce, who has first-hand Greek experience, pushes back hard. The conversation also reflects on the recent hazing-related death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson and what this says about accountability, tradition, and the mental toll of belonging. This episode is real, thought-provoking, and layered—perfect for listeners navigating identity, cultural pressures, and emotional growth in today's world. Antiochus sought to impose a worldview where the physical world was disconnected from any divine or spiritual purpose. To him, there was no room for the idea that the material and spiritual are interconnected-that the physical world itself reflects the infinite light of Hashem ✨. The Jewish story stands in direct opposition to this notion. It is a story of bridging the seen and unseen, of recognizing that the source of all existence is transcendent yet present in every detail of creation. We see this so clearly in the way Judaism emphasizes sanctifying the physical, transforming mundane actions into acts of divine connection and meaning. Chanukah reminds us that light, even a small flicker, has the power to illuminate profound truths: that the physical world isn't separate from Hashem's light but is an expression of it. This is our story, and it continues to shine through the ages To watch Torah Thoughts in video format: Episode HERE Channel HERE Subscribe to the Torah Thoughts BLOG for exclusive written content! When archaeologists in Egypt discovered a papyrus in 2022 that appears to hold fragments of work from the ancient Greek tragedian Euripides, it set in motion a chain of events that culminates in Boulder this weekend. A pair of scholars from the University of Colorado Boulder, Yvona Trnka-Amrhein and John Gibert will be part of a symposium centered around the find. After the discovery of the papyrus, the duo have worked on deciphering and interpreting the text, which they say contains portions from two of his plays.

The Vice President came of age inside collegiate institutions that have shaped Black, middle-class culture for generations. She says they imprinted deeply upon her as well. Kamala Harris's story is remarkable in numerous ways. If elected president, she'll be the first coming from several life experiences, including one that many Black commentators have noticed: She'd be the first president who's a graduate of an HBCU, and a member of one of the “Divine Nine” Black sororities and fraternities. She called her time at Howard University, and her membership in the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority, an important part of her journey. So what can we learn about the would-be president by looking at those institutions? In this episode, host Kai Wright discusses who the “Divine Nine” are and why they were created with Lawrence Ross, and then chats with historian Dr. Natalie Hopkinson. Political analyst Dr. Christina Greer gives us cultural context on how HBCUs like Howard shaped not only Harris, but a whole generation of Black university students. She talks about the influence of Black Greek life, and the nuanced politics of the 1980s. Every summer we crowdsource a Spotify playlist with our listeners built around a particular theme. In this episode, we discuss our personal experiences with greek life. What was rush week like? What are the differences between fraternities and sororities? Is it cliquey? While greek life may not have been the best fit for us, we are so grateful for the few strong friendships we did make from it. This episode is no shade to the girls who were in our particular sorority, but more so about the system of greek life as a whole. We hope you enjoy this episode, let us know what you want to hear next

This episode is sponsored by BetterHelp. Newsflash: Culty, culty college frats and sororities are still fraught with peril. Where do we even start? There's the deadly hazing incidents…the rampant sexual assaults…the blatant racism. And while we're talking about it: There are also far too many red Solo Cups coming out of frats and sororities. (Microplastics are very scary, yo!) It's a lot to grapple with. Luckily, we brought in some pro help to cover the state of campus Greek Life with us, and specifically the state of a nightmare called: Fraternity hazing. SNAPPED podcast creator and activist Lucy Taylor returns in this episode to cover what's happened since we first met, and to discuss a tragic frat hazing case that has cast a dark cloud over a well-known university. Be warned that this episode gets into gritty territory and listening to conversations like this can be triggering as hell, so please listen with care. Joining me for this roundtable are 4 impactful college-aged women who represent each of the D9 sororities. Their names are Ryann Phillips, Valesha Rhodes, Trinity Perkins, and Tumi Adeyoju (UH-DAY-JEW). They are members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Incorporated, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Incorporated, respectively.
With new developments surrounding the tragic death of Riley Strain, we reconvene with Dan Catullo and, eventually, Eric Oakes to dissect the latest information and pose the crucial question: where were Riley's Delta Chi fraternity brothers when it was time to search for him? This inquiry delves deep into fraternity behavior and accountability. Eric Oakes, the father of the late Adam Oakes, who met a similarly tragic fate in February 2021 after attending a Delta Chi fraternity event at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), shares his firsthand experience. Adam, a freshman at the time, became the center of attention due to the circumstances surrounding his passing. His death shed light on the pervasive issues of fraternity culture, hazing, and student safety on college campuses. Investigations into Adam Oakes' death were initiated to uncover the truth behind the events leading to his untimely demise. The incident sparked widespread discourse on the hazards of hazing and catalyzed calls for more stringent oversight and regulation of fraternity activities. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/justin0260/support

In recent years, Greek life faced a crisis as the pandemic cast a shadow on recruitment, and the “abolish Greek life” movement grew across campuses. But then came #RushTok — a flurry of TikToks documenting the sorority recruitment process among university campuses, especially in the South. One tag, in particular, soared to remarkable heights: #BamaRush. It chronicled the rush process at the University of Alabama and has garnered an astonishing 3 billion TikTok views (and counting). This week we speak to writer, journalist, and former sorority sister Anne Helen Petersen, who has been documenting the phenomenon. Why are the videos dominating our feeds? And what does RushTok's popularity say about its stars... and its biggest stans? Anne Helen Petersen is a writer and journalist whose writing has appeared in BuzzFeed News, The New York Times, Vox, The Atlantic, and more. Her books include Out of the Office: The Big Problem and Bigger Promise of Working From Home and Can't Even: How Millennials Became the Burnout Generation. She writes a Substack newsletter called Culture Study. To learn more about how CNN protects listener privacy, visit cnn.com/privacy
