This is a segment of episode 338 of Last Born In The Wilderness, “Chaos in Brasília: Why The Bolsonaristas Can't Quit, Won't Quit w/ Brian Mier.” Listen to the full episode: https://www.lastborninthewilderness.com/episodes/brian-mier-3 Journalist Brian Mier, co-editor at Brasil Wire and correspondent for teleSUR English, returns to the podcast to discuss the recent chaos in Brazil, days after the inauguration of popular center-left President Lula da Silva. In previous interviews I've conducted with Brian Mier, I asked him to detail the complex circumstances in Brazil giving rise to far-right politician Jair Bolsonaro and his victory in the 2018 presidential election. Mier's analysis detailed the well-documented consequences of the so-called anti-corruption scandal that led to the ousting of center-left president Dilma Rousseff in 2016, the imprisonment of former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva soon after (as well as his eventual release), and finally, the US government's complicity through all of it. When the time came late last year for Bolsonaro to run for a second term, Lula stepped in as a contender, and won. Leading up to the vote, Bolsonaro and various far-right actors, many of which are linked to Trump in the US, attempted to delegitimize the results of an election that would result in a Bolsonaro loss, engaging in many of the same tactics Trump and his cohorts used in the lead-up to the 2020 US elections, and beyond. On January 8th of this year, days after Lula was inaugurated, thousands of Bolsonaro supporters invaded government buildings in Brasília, in many ways replicating the chaos of January 6th, 2021 in Washington D.C. in the weeks leading up to the inauguration of Joe Biden. What are the Bolsonaristas attempting to accomplish? What guides their actions? Why is this event so similar to the infamous chaos at the US Capitol on January 6th? Brian Mier answers these questions, and more, in this interview. Brian Mier is a writer, geographer and development professional who has lived in Brazil for over 20 years.

We have come a full circle. When we first started our podcast back in 2018, Lula was in prison because of a judicial coup called “Lavajato.” Bolsonaro was the leading candidate. We were trying to understand the coup effort sponsored by the US state department against Lula De Silva. Before he went to prison, Lula gave a very inspiring speech, where he said “ The elites can kill one rose, two roses, or a hundred roses, but they cannot stop the arrival of spring and ours is a fight for spring.”Four years later, it looks like spring is in the air and to understand what happened, we are doing a special super episode, where we go through all our interviews with Brian Mier from BrasilWire where we talk about the judicial coup from start to finish. This super episode is based on three earlier episodes: To support Brian Mier and independent journalism, please visit his patreon. The first round of Brazil's elections has come and gone. As expected, former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was the big winner, with 48%. But he fell short of winning outright. Current President Jair Bolsonaro exceeded expectations and came in just a handful of points behind the former president. And it's going to mean weeks of intense campaigning as Bolsonaro has now become a real contender for the second-round election at the end of the month. In this first update to Brazil on Fire, we look at what it all means and how things stand ahead of the runoff election on Oct. 30. In particular, we analyze the media spin in the wake of the first-round vote in an in-depth interview with Brian Mier, editor of the English-language news site BrasilWire. This is Brazil on Fire, a podcast about Brazil's descent toward fascism under President Jair Bolsonaro. Over these six episodes we look at Bolsonaro's far-right government that has set the country ablaze, and how the United States helped him do it. We'll visit the birthplace of Brazilian Nazism, evangelical churches, and Indigenous villages in the Amazon. Emma hosts Brian Mier, correspondent for teleSUR English, to discuss the upcoming 2nd round of Brazilian elections between former President Lula Da Silva and current President Jair Bolsonaro. Then, Emma is joined by Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss the current projections for the control of state legislatures across the country as the midterm elections approach. Emma first runs through updates on the first week of the new SCOTUS term – likely as they are to uphold Alabama's racial gerrymandering – Trump's request to reverse the circuit 11 rulings opening up his stolen documents to the DOJ, and union-busting efforts by Apple and Amazon before diving deeper into this weekend's Herschel Walker news, as Right-Wing nutjobs come out of the woodworks to defending voting for a hypocrite. Brian Mier then joins as he and Emma get right into contextualizing the results of the first round of the Brazilian presidential election, with Lula's PT workers party actually becoming the first example of an incumbent losing the first round of a presidential election, and likely to keep the steam going with the third and fourth parties rallying behind him, despite the undermining coverage he and his party have gotten from the Right-Wing Brazilian press. Next, they tackle the role of the other parties in the first round of the election, with Ciro Gomes largely funneling his voters to Bolsonaro (despite his party's post-election affiliation to Lula), and why they seemed to be more intent on taking down Lula than Bolsonaro, also touching on the down-ballot success of the workers' party, particularly when it comes to the victories of Afro-Brazilian candidates. Wrapping up they explore the role of voting fraud in the election, and where US-Brazilian relations are likely to go from here. Aaron Kleinman and Emma then give the midterms a heat check as we enter October, exploring how the Dobbs decision bolstered Americans' fears of Right-Wing legislatures, walking through the massive importance of elections in Arizona and Pennsylvania (featuring two of the more heavily anti-democracy legislatures), and emphasizing the importance of on-the-ground organizing in these efforts. They also tackle what to expect in Michigan (and whether the Dems can flip their legislature) and why Maine's incredibly progressive agenda could be challenged by a return of Governor LePage. And in the Fun Half: Emma tackles the pseudo-artsy voyeurism of “Blonde,” Jon calls in to discuss the American coverage of Iran, misinformation, and whom the American left should engage with to learn about this issue. Megan Kelly and Dave Rubin discuss whether it matters that Herschel Walker was an incredibly abusive parent/husband/member of society, and Brian Kilmeade stretches out his Fox-News softball arm in an interview with Herschel himself. Margaret discusses helping introverts to Get Out the Vote, and Emma and the crew dive into updates on Amazon's work stoppage over fire safety issues and the union-busting that followed, plus, your calls and IMs!
