“It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it works, and you don't know if it works unless you experiment with it. In order to get good at everything you got to break it all up and pull it apart. Find the common thread, that's how the styles will merge.” -- Erik PaulsonMy guest on this episode is Erik Paulson who is an Encyclopedia of Martial Arts and the first American to win the World Light Heavyweight Shooto Championship in Japan. He was trained by legendary instructors like Guro Dan Inosanto, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Gene Lebell, Yori Nakamura, Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie, Tim Tackett, Ajarn Chai, and Billy Robinson. He is a multi-style Black Belt and master instructor of Jeet Kune Do, Kick Boxing, Savate, Shoot Fighting, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, and a 6'th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling and STX Kickboxing. He runs the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, where he has trained MMA Fighters like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Cub Swanson, Sean Sherk, James Wilks, and Brock Lesnar. This episode is all about connection and seeking the common thread in all martial arts. My key takeaway is that martial arts is a creative act. We must be humble and open so that we can learn and absorb from all sources. What we learn must be tested so that we know that we can make it work, and the only way to test it is to experiment with it. Martial Arts is a creative process, of transforming knowledge, wisdom, to understanding. Erik Paulson is a true genius of the game, his understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of martial arts sets him apart and allows him to mentor and guide his students toward excellence. This is a special episode, filled with insight and old-school stories of Jeet Kune Do and the development of MMA from someone who has first-hand knowledge and experience. Tune in for an unforgettable episode.

Host: Larry Bernstein. Guests are Ari Ciment and Tim Tackett
Tim Tackett was my High School drama teacher. He was smarter than smart. He still is. I don't think I realized until I had worked professionally in theatre, the gold mine I had in his instruction and direction as a 14 year old, young budding actress. The dude knows what he's talking about. And all while he is managing a rather talented group of high school aged theatre students, he was being invited to instruct in material arts circles all around the world. A house hold name of sorts in and beyond the martial arts circles, Tackett knew his stuff and still does. He is one fascinating person, and I still feel honored that I hung with him for four years of my formative life. I am grateful beyond measure. Treat yourself to a little under an hour of conversation with a wonderfully captivating man.
On this episode it is my absolute pleasure to interview Sifu Dwight Woods "The JKD Rebel"!! Sifu Dwight Woods, is a martial artist who has over 40 years of experience, 30+ of which have been dedicated to the study and practice of Bruce Lee's Jeet Kune Do. Sifu Dwight is a native of Trinidad & Tobago, West Indies, but grew up on the neighbouring island of Barbados. In 1983, he was the first Caribbean resident to attend a California Martial Arts Academy seminar where he met and trained under Dan Inosanto, Cass Magda, Francis Fong, Paul Vunak, Larry Hartsell and Tim Tackett. Before Dwight left California, Sifu Inosanto said to him, “You know, one of the best ways to get this stuff is to teach it as you learn. So since you're the first person from your part of the world to come out to us, you have my permission to share it when you get home.” Dwight is also a prolific podcast creator, so this is great chance to get him on the other side of the mic!
Tim Tackett is a martial arts instructor and author from Redlands, California who runs a non-profit group dedicated to preserving Bruce Lee's art of Jeet Kune Do. The new book Essential Jeet Kune Do - This book will serve way to decide what will work the best for you and what aspects of JKD you need to keep, as well as throw away. I feel that it would be impossible to learn this from your instructor, as he will mainly focus on what works best for him. I have been fortunate to have learned from many of the senior students of Bruce Lee and have noticed that they all focus on certain things and not on what some the others are doing. For some it may be the boxing aspects. For some it may be footwork. For others it was trapping energy and the Wing Chun elements. It was only when we started focusing on the Western fencing aspects of JKD that I was able to understand and focus on what has become my essence of JKD. Of course, an instructor cannot just hand you what will become your essence or foundation of your own JKD. This is something that you must discover for yourself as you work to become more a more efficient JKD practitioner. The purpose of this book is too show you most of what we teach in my garage and the basic principles behind each. Once you have worked on these you will come to realize what will work for you and what will not. Some of you will want to focus on distance and footwork. Others will feel comfortable crashing the line. Whatever works for you is the main thing. Just use the book as guideline to discover your own essential JKD.

Ken Gullette interviews Jeet Kune Do instructor Tim Tackett, a veteran martial artist who became a senior instructor under Dan Inosanto in 1973. Tim first studied martial arts in Taiwan, where he learned Hsing-I and Tai Chi. He authored two books on Hsing-I for O'Hara Publications in the late 70s and early 80s, but his main art is JKD. At age 75, he still teaches a Wedneday night class in his garage in Redlands, California. In this interview, Tim talks about studying in Taiwan, how he got into JKD, and some of his fighting philosophies.
“Don’t be bound by anything, the truth is always outside any fixed patterns.” Martial arts legend, Tim Tackett’s final words to me resounded not just for the field of martial arts but also for a whole worldview. Tim has had 3 love affairs in his life. His wife who he met after High School, his
