Rickson Gracie underwent hip surgery in his 60s as a direct result of his long career in fighting. This raises a critical question: Is Jiu-Jitsu really the "gentle art"?
Comedian Greg Fitzsimmons returns and they open by talking about the accident that took out his brand-new Mustang, the irony of the NFL using their “End Racism” end zones during a game in Germany, how Greg settled a recent airplane altercation, and the audience reaction to some of his new religious material. They also discuss Greg's “airjack” protocol and why he and all his friends took home the centerpieces from the AVN Awards. Next, Jason “Mayhem” Miller reads the news including stories about a FEMA official who was fired for allegedly telling workers to avoid Florida homes with Trump signs, Mattel mistakenly printing a porn site on Wicked movie doll boxes, a journalist responding to Martha Stewart saying she was dead now, and New York City ending a voucher program that allowed migrant families to buy their own food. Then, jiu-jitsu legend Rickson Gracie joins to talk about his long career in mixed martial arts, how the Gracie family were always open to an invitation to fight, how important controlled breath is while fighting, and his new book “Comfort in Darkness: The Invisible Power of Jiu-Jitsu.” For more with Greg Fitzsimmons: ● COMEDY SPECIAL: “You Know Me” available now on YouTube. ● INSTAGRAM: @gregfitzsimmons ● WEBSITE: gregfitzsimmons.com For more with Rickson Gracie: ● NEW BOOK: “Comfort in Darkness: The Invisible Power of Jiu-Jitsu” available ● INSTAGRAM: @ricksongraciejj ● WEBSITE: ricksongracie.com Thank you for supporting our sponsors: ● http://SimpliSafe.com/Adam ● BotanicTonics.com, use code ADAM ● Chime.com/Adam ● http://OReillyAuto.com/Adam
You guys have heard me talk about Jiu-Jitsu ad nauseum but what you may not have heard me talk too much about is the often-overlooked invisible form of the martial art that has taken over the world of MMA and combat sports. I can think of no better person to share his knowledge and depth of experience than one of the toughest men in the “First Family” of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie. Today, Rickson and I talk about managing fear, how to find a mission more important than your life, how to keep your identity secure although you may lose one element of who you are, the importance of a balanced approach to being a warrior, why base on the mats and off is so crucial, and the power of respecting and honoring your intuition. Rickson Gracie on the Nature of Competition in Jiu-Jitsu Rickson Gracie begins by highlighting a unique aspect of jiu-jitsu: the ability to compete intensely without causing injury. Unlike striking arts such as boxing, jiu-jitsu incorporates the concept of "tapping out," allowing practitioners to engage fully while maintaining safety. This dynamic foster a learning environment where losing is seen as an integral part of growth. Gracie also emphasizes the significance of being present, a practice that is central to jiu-jitsu. On the mat, practitioners must focus entirely on the moment, leaving behind external distractions. This mindfulness not only enhances performance but also translates to everyday life, fostering a sense of calm and clarity. Rickson Gracie on Engagement and Connection in Relationships The conversation then touches on the importance of genuine engagement in relationships. Gracie reflects on how technology has altered social interactions, often leading to superficial connections. He argues that martial arts training can help individuals reconnect with the essence of human interaction, fostering deeper connections through shared experiences and presence. Rickson Gracie on Finding and Fulfilling Your Purpose & Building Inner Strength Rickson Gracie discusses the concepts of purpose and service, highlighting that happiness is a dynamic process requiring effort and intention. He encourages listeners to identify their commitments and responsibilities, whether to family, work, or personal growth. Taking care of oneself is essential to being able to serve others effectively. On that note, Gracie opens up about his personal challenges, including his battle with Parkinson's disease. He approaches this new opponent with a strategic mindset, focusing on resilience and adaptability. He emphasizes the importance of understanding oneself and developing a strong sense of inner peace to navigate life's difficulties. Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the academy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American at the time to receive that honor. Sometimes you find yourself in the tropical paradise of Costa Rica, training jiu jitsu and spending time with close friends. These are some of my favorite trips, and I always enjoy sitting down and picking the brains of experts in their fields. As usual, we covered much more than just jiu jitsu, as these conversations often span life in general, and business. We definitely spent some time unpacking and discussing the recent multi-million dollar injury award to a white belt jiu jitsu student, and the potential impact on jiu jitsu academies worldwide. Henry Akins began training in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 1995 at the Rickson Gracie Acadamy on Pico blvd in West LA. Shortly after he started he became the secretary at the acadamy and was spending 70 hours a week there watching and participating in all of the classes. In 1997 the school moved to the Pacific Palisades where Henry trained and assisted main Instructor Luis Heredia and also participated and trained in all of the classes taught by Rickson. In Feb of 2004, because of his persistence and dedication to the fundamentals and philosophies of Jiu-Jitsu, Rickson Gracie presented Henry with a blackbelt, being only the third American at the time to receive that honor. Dan Hart is a Henry Akins blackbelt and owner of Alpha BJJ in Woodstock, IL. In addition to coaching both at his academy and seminars all over the world he is also an accomplished restauranteur and entrepreneur.
