“It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it works, and you don't know if it works unless you experiment with it.  In order to get good at everything you got to break it all up and pull it apart.  Find the common thread, that's how the styles will merge.”  -- Erik PaulsonMy guest on this episode is Erik Paulson who is an Encyclopedia of Martial Arts and the first American to win the World Light Heavyweight Shooto Championship in Japan.  He was trained by legendary instructors like Guro Dan Inosanto, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Gene Lebell, Yori Nakamura, Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie, Tim Tackett, Ajarn Chai, and Billy Robinson.  He is a multi-style Black Belt and master instructor of Jeet Kune Do, Kick Boxing, Savate, Shoot Fighting, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, and a 6'th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  He is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling and STX Kickboxing.  He runs the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, where he has trained MMA Fighters like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Cub Swanson, Sean Sherk, James Wilks, and Brock Lesnar. This episode is all about connection and seeking the common thread in all martial arts.  My key takeaway is that martial arts is a creative act.  We must be humble and open so that we can learn and absorb from all sources.  What we learn must be tested so that we know that we can make it work, and the only way to test it is to experiment with it.  Martial Arts is a creative process, of transforming knowledge, wisdom, to understanding.  Erik Paulson is a true genius of the game, his understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of martial arts sets him apart and allows him to mentor and guide his students toward excellence.  This is a special episode, filled with insight and old-school stories of Jeet Kune Do and the development of MMA from someone who has first-hand knowledge and experience.  Tune in for an unforgettable episode.

Welcome back mental heads to another episode of The Great Metal Debate podcast. It's Xander once again and today we will be talking about the new album Black Flame Eternal from Atlanta, Georgia's gothic black metallers Cloak. I have enjoyed their music ever since 2019 when my friend and fellow YouTuber Richard Metal Fan introduced me to their 2nd full-length The Burning Dawn which had just come out at the time. I found myself enjoying the music so much that I ordered their tape, CD and long sleeve shirt. Though it has been a while, I even revisited their 2017 debut To Venomous Depths to refresh on their earlier work before diving into this new album. "Ethereal Fire" is a killer opening track that sets the overall tone for the remainder of the album. It puts the group vocals to great use as they are timed very well. The stand alone drum beats at the beginning and end were also a very nice touch. Whenever a black metal band makes the Eoh sound. Many metalheads have coined phrased them as the Blasphemy Eoh's. "With Fury And Allegiance" has a few of those throughout the track but the trashy guitar sound and the vocal speed together remind me a little bit of Goatwhore. But I also like the calm slowed down part halfway through. "Shadowlands" begins with a very smooth guitar riff and even a very nice solo early on after the one minute mark. It really fits in with that melodic sound that I'm used to hearing from the two guitarists Max Brigham and Scott Taysom. I also really enjoy the spoken word section just after with the lyrics "For I have shed the blood. I have walked beyond the gates. And I have sworn, to you I bow." The first single that Season Of Mist released for this album was the track called "Invictus" which definitely sounds like a classic thrash metal riff until you hear the blackened style of vocals. I love how the lyrics "In the cold of night I watch it fall. Tot he morning star my spirit calls" are said as a chant but at the same time doesn't repeat. Three weeks later, a lyrical video for the song "Seven Thunders" was dropped. I won't spoil the lyrics for this one, you'll just have to check it out for yourself. I will say that they rhythm has a very black-n-roll kind of feel to it which I enjoy very much. Next we get the song "Eye Of The Abyss" which has a winding sound to the guitars but later on in the track we get an audibly groovy bass line laid down by Billy Robinson. Last month the band put out their 3rd single for this record called "The Holy Dark" which kicks off with a drum intro performed by Sean Bruneau. The sound mixing really highlighted his capabilities in this one. As a lead-in to the concluding song we have sort of a prelude called "Heavenless". It sounds like an instrumental because the spoken word is purposely faded. You can still look up the lyrics but the calming music does overpower Scott's voice. And then for the closer we come to the album title track "Black Flame Eternal". I can't wait to see them for the first time during their album release show on Saturday June 10th!

One of the most important figures in the history of professional wrestling died on the same year the promotion he founded celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. Antonio Inoki was a lightning rod for controversy and creativity within pro wrestling and even the wider world of politics. Although known for pushing the notion of pro wrestling as the "King of Sports" and engaging in matches with high-profile figures from legit combat, even most famously Muhammad Ali, and as a result being one of the pioneers of what we now know as MMA, he was still a great in-ring technical wrestling. Therefore the LMTYS hosts have chosen to discuss a match from 1975 that is oft-cited as one of his best wrestling matches, and winner of multiple Match of the Year awards in 1975. It's against another innovative and influential figure in wrestling and MMA, Billy Robinson. There is a link to all five episodes after Justin's original summary. In the next installment of their profile series on Antonio Inoki, Fumi Saito and Justin Knipper continued covering Inoki's full in-ring career, this time focusing on years 1974–1980. After Inoki's (and Seiji Sakaguchi's) NJPW and Giant Baba's AJPW established deals with television channels, the rivalry between the two companies began heating up. Fumi and Justin talked about the hot time it was for pro wrestling Japan during the mid-'70s, the influence of television and print media at the time. The two also went over Inoki's inventive and bloody December 1974 vs. IWA champion Strong Kobayashi, Inoki's year-long feud with Tiger Jeet Singh, his famous hour-long bout with Karl Gotch-trainee Billy Robinson, and his series of matches with Andre the Giant. They also talked about Vince McMahon Sr.'s involvement with and appearances for NJPW at around this time, which subsequently led to NJPW and the WWWF's 11-year working relationship. The partnership would also lead to Inoki's international breakout bout against Muhammed Ali in what many would call the world's first MMA fight, which Fumi and Justin also covered in detail towards the end of the show. On this week's show, Fumi Saito & Justin Knipper talked about the history of pro wrestling schools and pro wrestling “literacy” or education over the years. From Farmer Burns' mail-order wrestling manual to Verne Gagne's camps run by Billy Robinson in Minnesota; from the methods of important figures like Eddie Sharkey & Brad Rhenigans to the rise of wrestling schools like the Monster Factory and all the detail in between. How did the old generation of trainers react to so many schools opening up around the US in the '80s and '90s? Fumi & Justin went over that and much more in this one. Let Me Tell You About It Podcast

In our inaugural episode, we catch up with guitarist Lionel Loueke. For over 15 years, he has dazzled worldwide audiences with a unique instrumental wizardry. He is also featured prominently as a sideman in the ensembles of Herbie Hancock. Compositionally, Loueke's language on the guitar is built on strong, driving bass lines often juxtaposed with a percussive vocal styling first developed in his native country of Benin. As an improviser, he exerts a magical command of his instrument over shifting time signatures, harmonic progressions, and song structures. In our conversation, we learn that Loueke, early in his career, adopted a practice of choosing courage over fear. One proving ground happened after his first two years in the United States; he auditioned for the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz in 2001. The evaluating panel then included Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock and Terence Blanchard. Loueke not only entered the program, but his resume very quickly grew to include work with all three musicians. Loueke's latest album, Close Your Eyes, continues his momentum and imagination using the Great American Songbook as a vehicle. For our Vinyl Word album feature, we spotlight a Hancock classic masterpiece, Sextant.Produced by Billy Robinson

Let Me Tell You About It Podcast

Producer and emcee Large Professor embodies the culture of true Hip Hop. His head-nodding instrumentals rely on a precise sampling technique. This method flips excerpts from classic jazz, reggae, rock and soul songs into original, memorable instrumentals that stand on their own and have provided the perfect soundscapes for an amazing arsenal of lyricists. In his early 90's album, Breaking Atoms, Large Professor was the featured member of the group Main Source. This recording set the template for his work that continues into the present day with a list of icons that include Nas, A Tribe Called Quest, Slick Rick, Public Enemy, and Rakim. Large Professor's pursuit of Hip Hop has created an evolving legacy that extends far beyond the five boroughs that first championed his sound. In the Vinyl Word segment, we examine the work of pianist Gene Harris and organist Reuben Wilson as two instrumentalists whose recorded works of the late 1960s became cornerstones for the new grooves of Hip Hop. Produced by Billy Robinson

Let Me Tell You About It Podcast

Saxophonist Houston Person is a living legend and progenitor of the soulful sound of swinging music. After an intense and rewarding tenure with organist Johnny Hammond Smith in the early 1960's, Person made a call to Prestige Records which began his 50-plus year career as a solo recording artist. His albums over the years, which have included noted players such as Grant Green, Cedar Walton, Idris Muhammad, Curtis Fuller and Pepper Adams, have kept him in the ears of worldwide music fans. From his beginnings as leader, Person booked his own tours, hired bands, and managed his career independently, a practice that he continues to the present day. Our conversation with Person sheds light on his style on and off the bandstand; he blends decades of wisdom with charm and a direct approach to storytelling. He is the personification of soul. Our Vinyl Word segment is also dedicated to some classic moments in Person's recorded discography. Produced by Billy Robinson

Here is part two of Fumi & Justin's profile on Antonio Inoki. The two focused on Inoki's wrestling career in the late 1960s and early 1970s with JWA, when Inoki and Shohei “Giant” Baba formed a super-team in the wake of Rikidozan's passing, BI Platoon. They also covered Inoki's first big singles win a few years later when he beat Johnny Valentine for the UN championship, or the same title that's ⅓ of AJPW's Triple Crown today.  Additionally, Fumi & Justin talked in detail about the dissolution of JWA in the early '70s and the formation of both NJPW (Inoki + Karl Gotch) and AJPW (Baba + the Funk Brothers) in 1972, plus Inoki's historic 1975 “Broadway” match against Billy Robinson, the debut of Inoki's Octopus Hold, comparisons with Baba as a singles wrestler throughout the year, VHS and BETA-MAX talk and lots more. The next Write That Down! will cover Inoki's career from the late '70s into the 1980s, introducing new players into the mix, like Stan Hansen, Tiger Jeet Singh, Hulk Hogan, Bruiser Brody, and Andre the Giant. We'll also go into more detail on Inoki's unrecognized WWWF World Heavyweight Championship win over Bob Backlund.
