Krav Maga instructor, Lewis Groves joins me to get into what Krav Maga really is, where it comes from, and how it's different from traditional martial arts or rule-bound sports. We talk about training for the street rather than the ring, the value of simplicity under pressure, and why so many martial arts end up in fantasyland. We also cover ego, humility, gender differences, strength vs. skill, and why most guys think they can fight — when they really can't. Black Belt Interviews

Mr Anslow began his martial arts journey around 1986 (whilst still at high school), dabbling in arts such as Shaolin Kung Fu, Wing Chun and even Ninjitsu. At college he studied both Judo and Fencing, before finally settling on Ch'ang Hon (ITF) Taekwon-do in early 1991 at Wembley Taekwon-Do School, under the instructorship of Master David Bryan (then a 5th degree) and Mr John Pepper, 2nd degree. During his formative years in Taekwon-do, he also got the opportunity to study some Jiu-Jitsu as well as training along side his friend (Dave Arnold), a Shotokan black belt, for many years. He graded to black belt in Taekwon-do in early 1994 under the B.U.T.F. and gained his 2nd degree in 1996. In 1999 he founded Rayners Lane Taekwon-do Academy, which ran in the same location until 2007, when the hall was demolished and we move into the newly built dojang (training hall), just a few hundred years away, continuing to run there ever since. In 2000 he graded to 3rd degree under Master Juan Mahai of the KTA (Korean Taekwondo Association), as well as winning a gold and silver medal at the AIMAA World Championships. In 2002, along with a couple of friends in the USA & Canada he founded IAOMAS (International Alliance of Martial Art Schools), which continues to flourish under the guidence of Mr Colin Wee, to this day. Stuart Anslow - Chief Instructor In 2003 he was inducted into Combat magazines 'Hall of Fame' & in 2004 he graded to 4th degree whilst in the USA, as well as 7 of his students becoming World Champions (2 as double world gold medallists) at the 2nd AIMAA World Championships. In 2005 he started writting his first book (Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-do Hae Sul, Vol. 1), which was released in 2006 to critical acclaim to Taekwon-Do students around the world. Also in 2005, he went from part-time instructor, to full-time instructor, establishing Harrow Martial Arts. Having written for and been interviewed in many martial arts magazines over the years, in early 2009 he started his own magazine; Totally Tae Kwon Do magazine, a global Tae Kwon Do magazine loved by all that read it, which he editted and ran free for 40 issues and is still going strong today. In 2010 he graded to 5th degree (along side fellow instructor Mr Vikram Gautam who was grading for 3rd degree) under legendary Taekwon-do pioneering Master, Willie Lim, 8th degree. Also in 2010 he released a further 3 books (The Encylopedia of Taekwon-Do Patterns, Vols. 1, 2 & 3), all of which were received extremely well and became top sellers Also in 2010 Mr Anslow was awarded a citation from Dr. Chungwon Choue, (then) President of the WTF (World Taekwondo Federation), South Korea, recognizing his 'outstanding contribution to the development of Taekwondo'. In 2012 he released the second volume of Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-do Hae Sul, which so many had been waiting for. Again, it was very well recieved. In 2013 he released his sixth book, From Creation To Unification, which is adored by many due to its in-depth historical contents regarding Taekwon-Do, in 2015 his first book (Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-do Hae Sul, Vol. 1) was released as a Spanish version as well and in 2017 he released his 7th book, 'Ch'ang Hon Taekwon-Do Hosinsul' which was a detailed look at the self-defence aspect of Taekwon-Do (known as Hosinsul). In 2022, as well as his daughter gaining her 1st Degree black belt, he graded for 6th Degree, under Master Hay Harris, 7th Degree (Himself a Master promoted by Grandmaster Willie Lim, 9th Dan) Over the years he has taught numerous seminars (both home and abroad) on the applications of Taekwon-do's patterns (as well as other aspects of the art, such as knife and gun defence) and in 2015 he travelled to South Korea with one of his senior students, where he not only got to experience the fantastic culture of Korea and many historically relevant places, but also taught Taekwon-do in the homeland of the art, over the course of 10 days. And he returned in 2018, with another of his students, Matthew Baxter. Mr Anslow has 4 lovely children and continues to run the Academy. To him, Taekwon-Do is not a hobby or a part-time job, its not even a full-time job; it his his career that he devotes his life to, both developing excellent students, whilst continuing to promote and develop that art he loves.

"We know we can't make it; we don't have the lifespan to know it all. But that's what makes us warriors—we still choose to walk the path, even knowing we'll never reach the end.”“The breath is the bridge—it's the control point for your body, your spirit, and your mind. Mastering it gives you the reins to navigate any challenge, on or off the mat.""One of the major speed bumps is the need to do something... the more you seek, the less you find." – Alan BakerWelcome back, today we have a truly inspiring guest—someone who has been a close friend and a powerful influence on my journey in the martial arts world. Joining me is Sifu Alan Baker. Alan is a professional martial artist, author, and tactical trainer with a deep commitment to the art, the lifestyle, and the warrior mindset.  He's a rare example of a complete martial artist, blending knowledge across styles— His expertise spans Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wing Chun, Jeet Kune Do, Kali, Keysi Fighting Method and more, making him a dynamic instructor with an emphasis on both the art and science of combat. As the founder of the Atlanta Martial Arts Center, Alan has built a reputation for bridging traditional martial arts, self-defense, and tactical training. In addition to running his academy, Alan is the creator of the Civilian Tactical (SeaTac) Program, designed to bring practical self-defense and personal protection training to civilians. His unique approach has been sought out by law enforcement agencies, military groups, and protection specialists. Alan is not only a martial artist but a lifelong student and advocate of the warrior mindset, integrating practices like Qigong and breath control into his teachings to help individuals develop balance, resilience, and focus. My Key Takeaway is that it is always about The Journey Over the Destination: Alan emphasizes that martial arts is a lifelong journey, where every accomplishment reveals new levels to explore. He believes in keeping a beginner's mindset, continuously seeking knowledge without the need to "arrive."  We also discuss the value of creating a personalized martial arts “system” for each practitioner, built upon foundational skills but continuously evolving based on individual experiences and needs.  We dive deep into the importance of creating martial arts communities, by creating martial arts academies that are sanctuaries, and places where students can feel safe, supported, and be able to discover their true selves.  In our conversation, we explore how martial arts goes beyond physical training, becoming a bridge to personal empowerment, resilience, and even healing. Alan shares insights into what it means to live with a warrior's mindset, the importance of the breath as the ‘bridge' to balance and focus, and how he sees each practitioner's journey as one of continual adaptation and self-expression.This episode is packed with wisdom, so whether you're a seasoned martial artist or just beginning your path, get ready to be inspired. Let's jump in!

A Martial Arts Odyssey from Bruce Lee to Wing Chun Mastery In this captivating episode, Peter Mogridge talks to Andrew Staton at the Doncaster UK Martial Arts Show. Peter, a seasoned martial artist with decades of experience, shares his incredible journey from being inspired by Bruce Lee to becoming a Wing Chun master under Grandmaster Samuel Kwok. Peter's martial arts adventure began in the 1970s, driven by the Bruce Lee craze that swept the world. Despite starting with Shotokan Karate, he eventually found his true calling in Wing Chun. His path was far from straightforward, involving stints in Aikido, Thai Boxing, and Wadoryu Karate, among others. Peter's dedication and passion for martial arts led him to train with notable figures like Sean Vieira and Nathan Lewis, becoming part of the renowned Bristol Death Squad. One of the highlights of Peter's journey is his close relationship with Grandmaster Samuel Kwok. After facing challenges with a previous Wing Chun club, Peter found a mentor and friend in Samuel Kwok, achieving Sifu status and travelling the world to teach and promote Wing Chun. Peter's insights into the philosophy and practical applications of Wing Chun are profound, emphasising its potential for self-improvement, peace, and flexibility. Peter also discusses his involvement in combat survival training, highlighting the importance of situational awareness and risk assessment in today's world. He shares valuable advice on avoiding conflict and the realities of knife defence, stressing the importance of running away rather than engaging. Beyond martial arts, Peter is active in close protection work and is setting up a new school overseas to train high-risk environment close protection operators. He is also working on a charity initiative to support military veterans. An inspiring and insightful conversation with Peter Mogridge, a martial artist who embodies dedication, resilience, and the spirit of continuous learning. BATMAN TO BRUCE LEE: George Fitzgerald's Martial Arts Journey George Fitzgerald: A Martial Arts Journey from Batman to Bruce Lee In our latest podcast episode, we had the pleasure of speaking with George Fitzgerald, a seasoned martial artist whose journey is nothing short of inspiring. From his early days of being inspired by Batman and Bruce Lee to mastering multiple martial arts disciplines, George's story is a testament to passion, dedication, and the eternal quest for mastery. Andrew Staton asks the questions; George's journey into martial arts began at a very young age. "From the age of four I've been a Batman fan and I used to see Batman in the comics doing this weird stuff called karate jiu jitsu," he recalls. The influence of iconic figures like Elvis Presley and Bruce Lee further fueled this early fascination with martial arts. At the age of twelve, after watching Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury," George knew that martial arts was his path in life. Over the years, George has trained in various martial arts disciplines, including judo, aikido, Wing Chun, Muay Thai, and Russian Sambo, among others. His dedication to martial arts is evident in his relentless pursuit of knowledge and mastery. "I just want to be the best martial artist I can be, so that then I can help anyone I teach to be the best martial artist they can be," he explains. One of the key philosophies that George holds dear is the effectiveness of martial arts in self-defence. "My number one premise of doing a martial art is, is this effective in self defence?" he states. This focus on practicality and real-world application has guided his training and teaching methods throughout his career. George's journey is also marked by his encounters with legendary martial artists such as Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, and Chuck Norris. His relationship with Joe Lewis, in particular, left a lasting impact. "Bruce Lee was the greatest martial arts teacher he ever knew, without a doubt," George shares, reflecting on Joe's admiration for Bruce Lee. Despite his extensive experience and numerous accolades, George remains humble and refers to himself as the "eternal white belt." This mindset of continuous learning and growth is what keeps him motivated and passionate about martial arts. "Even now, I'm kind of getting all animated. That's why I can't actually put my finger on what it is. It just makes me feel like, you know, let's get up and train now," he says with enthusiasm. As George continues to train and teach, he remains a beacon of inspiration for martial artists around the world. His story is a reminder that martial arts is not just about physical prowess but also about cultivating a warrior spirit and a lifelong commitment to self-improvement. SIFU George Fitzgerald is the former President, Founder & Master Instructor of the Tang Lung Combat Academy from 1989 – 2012. Among his many credentials, he is a qualified instructor under THREE of Bruce Lee's very best students! He has been studying and practicing formal Martial Arts for the last 50 years, starting in 1973 with Judo at age eleven. But his real introduction to the ‘fighting arts' was from the age of seven in the form of boxing and self-defence ‘tips' from his father – Bill Fitzgerald, a man who was definitely no stranger to ‘street survival' – in fact, he was known to many simply as ‘The Bouncer!' “Spiritual Growth is not necessarily found on a yoga mat, in the dojo, or in a meditation room, it's found in the space between your thoughts, it's found in the space between your decisions, it's found in the still point in the transition between stimulus and response.  If I can pause and master those transitions and come to center in those moments and choose something other than what I would have done, that is functional spirituality and growth in all aspects of my life. Now I become player number one, changing the code, changing the game, changing the trajectory, because I am consciously aware of what I used to do, and I am consciously aware of what's happening, and I take a moment to pause, and I choose something different.  And that's where that growth starts to happen.”—Harinder SinghThe Fantastic Budo Brothers have stepped in this week to interview me for this episode.  For those of you who don't know I will share a little of my background.  I am a Martial Artist, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Speaker, Author and High-Performance Coach.  I teach elite audiences and organizations "How to Master Their Center and Flow in Chaos”.  I specialize in training the trainers and have had the distinct honor of working with Black Belt School Owners, Military, Special Forces, Secret Service, and SWAT Teams.  I have shared my programs with over  150 Law Enforcement Agencies, Silicon Valley Business Leaders, and Professional Athletes across the globe.  As a profession I teach Jeet Kune Do, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Wing Chun, and the Filipino Martial Arts. I love Boxing, Wrestling and Savate and hold a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.  I am currently a Doctoral Candidate of Chinese Energetic Medicine and was honored to be inducted into the Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame in 2019.This episode is all about developing accurate perceptive awareness and fostering effective interactions.  My key takeaway is that martial arts teaches us so much more than punching, kicking, stabbing, and choking.  It teaches us essential skills of how to relax under pressure, slow down our perception of time, expand our awareness, read our opponents, and make conscious choices in chaos.  There is no experience that can be disassociated from your relationship to your center.  The ability to find your center, move from your center, keep your center under pressure, and recover your center after being knocked off is the key to personal and professional performance.  We dive deep into discovering how to know yourself and others, how to cultivate stillness in chaos, and the art of honestly express yourself.  We also define mastery, not as a destination but rather as the continuous change and transformation of the being.  I truly believe that martial arts are the greatest vehicle to develop our human potential, discover the cause of our ignorance, and unleash our superpowers of creativity, connectivity, and adaptability.  A big shout out to the Budo brothers for stepping in as guest interviewers and to all of you my listeners thank you for joining me on this journey.

David played Rugby League for many years up to NSW Cup (formerly Reserve Grade), but suffered 2 knee reconstructions at an early age, cutting short his Rugby League Career. David put this setback behind him and went on to train as a Professional Arm Wrestler, until an unfortunate accident occurred, which put the breaks on his dreams. He then went on to pursue Martial Arts. David received his Black Belt in Wing Chun, Purple belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, train in Submission wrestling, and has had several Cage Fights (MMA). In the last ten years David has studied many successful teams and individual athletes, from The All Blacks (Rugby Union), to Rafael Nadal (Tennis), Ronda Rousey (MMA, UFC) and many other successful teams and individuals. They all in their own way, follow a similar structure to the "5 Step System Towards Improved Vitality in the Workplace" that David has come up with to improve workplace relations, morale and profitability of your business.
