The Belgian Bruce Lee talks with Andrew Staton direct from the UK Martial Arts Show 2023 He reveals; How Bruce Lee inspired him to start training? How did he pioneer training on his own? How did he find his way into movies? As a teenager, Sifu Mark Stas started his martial arts training alone in his room, before joining his first ‘official' course in 1984 with Karate Shotokan which he practised for many years. Because he loved kicking techniques so much, it was suggested he practise Taekwondo and so switched to this Korean martial art. He competed successfully during his youth and participated at a World Championship in Italy. He got an introduction in Bruce Lee's Jun Fan, before discovering after a few months a Chinese martial art, which changed his life, thanks to the great fighter and instructor Sifu Salih Avci in Aachen (Germany). Convinced of the efficiency, he soon decided to live and study for many years in that country with the best European Wing Tsun schools. Training and teaching in the ML-MAF, his dedication and passion led him to create his Wing Flow System after more than 34 years of martial arts practice. His performance in Italy at one of the most important events, the First Festival dell Budo in Torino left not only the organisers in awe: his way of moving and his explosive movements took their breath away. His videos were discovered in 2016 and shared numerous times on social media all over the world. He was invited to different countries all over the world who were interested in his teachings. He received at the Martial Hero Award event with his Wing Flow System the most beautiful congratulation a martial artist could get from Peter Chin, who was the training partner of Bruce Lee and one of only four students who received the official certificate from Bruce Lee. This focus on practicality and real-world application has guided his training and teaching methods throughout his career. George's journey is also marked by his encounters with legendary martial artists such as Joe Lewis, Bill Wallace, and Chuck Norris. His relationship with Joe Lewis, in particular, left a lasting impact. "Bruce Lee was the greatest martial arts teacher he ever knew, without a doubt," George shares, reflecting on Joe's admiration for Bruce Lee. Despite his extensive experience and numerous accolades, George remains humble and refers to himself as the "eternal white belt." This mindset of continuous learning and growth is what keeps him motivated and passionate about martial arts. "Even now, I'm kind of getting all animated. That's why I can't actually put my finger on what it is. It just makes me feel like, you know, let's get up and train now," he says with enthusiasm. As George continues to train and teach, he remains a beacon of inspiration for martial artists around the world. His story is a reminder that martial arts is not just about physical prowess but also about cultivating a warrior spirit and a lifelong commitment to self-improvement. SIFU George Fitzgerald is the former President, Founder & Master Instructor of the Tang Lung Combat Academy from 1989 – 2012. Among his many credentials, he is a qualified instructor under THREE of Bruce Lee's very best students! He has been studying and practicing formal Martial Arts for the last 50 years, starting in 1973 with Judo at age eleven. But his real introduction to the ‘fighting arts' was from the age of seven in the form of boxing and self-defence ‘tips' from his father – Bill Fitzgerald, a man who was definitely no stranger to ‘street survival' – in fact, he was known to many simply as ‘The Bouncer!' WHEN SH*T HITS THE FAN Military Martial Arts Martial Arts Unveiled: The Realities of Conflict Management and Self-Defence In the latest episode of our podcast, we delve into the intricate world of martial arts with a focus on conflict management and self-defence. Our guests, Chris Chandler and Michael from the PolArm Academy, bring a wealth of experience and knowledge, challenging conventional perceptions of martial arts training. Founded in 2005, the PolArm Academy emerged from the necessity to address the unique challenges faced by British Transport Police on the London Underground. The absence of a reactionary gap due to noise and environmental constraints led to the development of a specialised training manual that emphasised legal and medical ramifications, a perspective often overlooked in traditional martial arts. Chris Chandler, with his extensive background in police training, highlights the critical importance of understanding the legal consequences of self-defence actions. "The legal and medical ramifications are something that gets overlooked all the time," Chris explains. In real-world scenarios, excessive force can lead to legal troubles, making it imperative for martial artists to balance effective self-defence with lawful conduct. The conversation takes an insightful turn as we explore behavioural detection, a skill honed by both Chris and Michael through rigorous training, including sessions at the FBI Academy. Understanding body language and pre-emptive indicators of aggression are crucial components of their curriculum. Chris elaborates, "Only 7% are words on communication skills. The rest is tone, pitch, aggression, and movement." Mick Tully, our host, shares his own experiences with conflict management, drawing parallels with the teachings of renowned martial artists like Geoff Thompson. The discussion underscores the evolution of martial arts from a purely physical discipline to one that incorporates psychological and behavioural elements. One of the standout moments of the episode is the emphasis on the mindset required for effective self-defence. Chris and Michael stress the importance of resilience and fitness, not just for seasoned martial artists but also for civilians. The PolArm Academy's approach includes "shock treatment" to simulate real-world stress and fatigue, preparing trainees for the unpredictability of actual confrontations. The episode also touches on the challenges faced by modern law enforcement officers, who must navigate the complexities of public perception and legal scrutiny. The proliferation of mobile phones and social media means that every action is potentially recorded and analysed, adding another layer of pressure to conflict situations. As the episode draws to a close, Mick reflects on the broader implications of martial arts training. It's not just about physical prowess but also about cultivating a mindset that can handle the ethical and psychological demands of self-defence. "If you want to be a badass, become a badass," Mick aptly summarises. Whether you're a martial artist, a law enforcement officer, or simply someone interested in self-defence, this episode offers a comprehensive look at the realities of conflict management. Tune in to gain valuable insights and rethink what it means to train for real-world scenarios. Interviewed by Mick Tully who is a JKD Instructor under Guro Dan Inosanto and Rick Faye. Jeet Kune Do: Yorkshire Irish Connection with Mick Shore Mick Shore talks to Andrew Staton about his journey through martial arts and his latest book Sticks & Stones & Other Shenanigans Growing up in S Yorkshire Growing up Irish Being bullied Inspired by Bruce Lee Learning Judo Lau Gar Escrima Pencak Silat Sayoc Kali Muay Thai Jeet Kune Do Larry Hartsell MMA BJJ Buy your copy here on Amazon.com or from your local bookstore or wherever you get your books. Mick Shore's book Sticks & Stones & Other Shenanigan's Sticks and Stones and other Shenanigans is the inspiring story of martial arts instructor extraordinaire Mick Shore, born in Doncaster in 1968 of Irish and Anglo-Indian heritage. “Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me” so the saying goes, but Mick Shore was to learn that names do indeed hurt. However, he never let anyone see him cry; instead, he used the hateful name-calling to make him stronger. Raw truths from the son of an Irishman, a former victim of bullying and an accomplished all-round martial artist in the world of martial arts. Did you know...? In the 18th Century, the faction fighters of Tipperary used to gather together in groups or “fighting factions” to battle each other over territory or land disputes. This fighting involved the use of bata or clubs and when the law prohibited the carrying of a club or gavel, the fighters extended these bata to the length of a walking cane to get around the new law. Often the bata had the end or knob filled with lead for greater striking power in combat and this later became known as a shillelagh. In these battles, the men would sometimes be accompanied by their wives as backup. These women would put stones into handkerchiefs and using these like a slingshot would throw them at the enemy. As a result, they were referred to as stone throwers or stone chuckers. The men and fighting women of Tipperary were fierce and the faction fighting spread throughout the south of Ireland with the last being held in 1887 in Cappawhite near Cashel, Co Tipperary, only a few miles from where Mick's family are from and where his father was born. Boudica Movie In Depth Interview Jesse V Johnson "Superbly crafted movie of Queen Boudica's epic fight back against the treacherous Roman Empire." BOUDICA is the bold, bloody story of the titular Celtic Queen. King Prasutagus rules over the Iceni people with his wife Boudica by his side. Prasutagus is betrayed and killed by Rome, leaving Boudica's kingdom without a male heir. The Romans seize her land, her property and abuse her and her children. Driven to the edge of madness and determined to avenge her husband's death, Boudica rallies the various tribes from the region and wages an epic war against the mighty Roman Empire. Starring Olga Kurylenko (Black Widow), Clive Standen (Vikings), Rita Tushingham (Last Night in Soho), (Harry Potter franchise) and James Faulkner (Game of Thrones), Boudica is written and directed by Jesse V. Johnson (Avengement). Director In-depth Interview We talked to the director Jesse V Johnson about his inspiration making the movie. Questions This is very different film to Avengement, Debt Collector, Hell Hath No Fury, How did you come to make this movie? Olga Kurylenko glows as the warrior queen did you create the movie with her in mind? Is there any sense that she is channelling the current war in her own Ukraine? It is beautifully, sumptuously shot with a definite nod to Gladiator in story and style was that intentional? You have an outstanding cast, (Clive Standen, Rita Tushingham, James Faulkner,) Nick Moran as the baddy is superb as the Roman general Catius Decianus. How did you get him to find his character almost wickedly enjoying the slaughter? How did you train the actors and choreograph the fight scenes? The Roman legionaries were impressive in their kit, did they come battle ready? How did you train the Britons to fight a shield wall? It is very different to a tank or RPG, so what was it like working a ballista into the fight action? Was the ancient sword that came alive in Boudica's hands a reference to King Arthur and the sword in the stone? The end fight scene has a Tarantino/ Peckinpahesque (Cross Of Iron (The Wild Bunch?)) violent glory, is that just me or were you channelling them? You shot in Suffolk. What was it like working on location on the earth where it actually happened? You're shooting in Italy right now… what are you making? What is next? "Every martial artist talks about stepping up in the face of evil, BOUDICA did it 2000 years ago" Based on legendary, historical events from 60/ 61 AD in a Britain barely conquered by the Roman Empire, the story of Boudica has inspired generations ever since. Boudica's battle speech "...Among the rest of mankind death frees even those who are in slavery to others; only in the case of the Romans do the very dead remain alive for their profit. Why is it that, though none of us has any money (how, indeed, could we, or where would we get it?), we are stripped and despoiled like a murderer's victims? And why should the Romans be expected to display moderation as time goes on, when they have behaved toward us in this fashion at the very outset, when all men show consideration even for the beasts they have newly captured?..." Recorded by Cassius Dio in about 200 AD, 140 years after the events noted in 60 AD. Availability BOUDICA is available on digital now. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Afghan Bruce Lee Abbas Alizada talks with Andrew Staton direct from the UK Martial Arts Show 2023 He reveals; How did he find out he looked like Bruce Lee? What was the first Bruce Lee film he saw? How he was discovered in Afghanistan? Was he already training in martial arts? He reveals he trains with Sifu Samuel Kwok in WING CHUN, who is a direct student of Ip Chun who was taught by his father Ip Man who famously taught Bruce Lee Abbas Alizada saw his first Bruce Lee movie as an eight-year-old in Afghanistan. However watching Fist of Fury, The Big Boss and Alizada's favourite, Enter the Dragon, was very dangerous. The Taliban a hardline Islamic regime that now rule Afghanistan have banned all television, music and cinema. “If caught I would have been punished,” said Alizada, now 29, “People were beaten and had their hands and feet chopped off.” But Alizada's connection to Lee did not stop at a love for martial arts and his movies. In 2014, Alizada shot to social media fame after friends posted photos of him on Facebook. His striking resemblance to Lee did not go unnoticed. “Afghanistan's Bruce Lee,” he said. “That's what people called me ... I was getting recognised in the street.” His looks now made him a target, as did his ethnicity. Alizada is a member of the Hazara group, one of Afghanistan's largest ethnic minority groups that has long faced violence and discrimination. “I was in danger – my training partner was killed by the Taliban.” He also feared for his wife who holds a brown belt in karate. “For women and girls life was difficult.” Under the Taliban, women are banned from many jobs, education and denied access to public parks and gyms. A British charity, along with Alizada's London-based lawyer Mahtab Aziz, helped Alizada and his family flee the war-torn country. It was a long and complicated process that included six months in Pakistan and time in Iran. One day he hopes to return to Afghanistan. “I love Kabul and I want my children to see their birth place,” he said. “I want to return when peace has returned … I believe the Taliban will be removed one day.” Interviewer Andrew Staton Filmed in 4K and directed by Matt Routledge With thanks to Bob Sykes, Paul Barnett and the UK Martial Arts Show.
