“It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it works, and you don't know if it works unless you experiment with it. In order to get good at everything you got to break it all up and pull it apart. Find the common thread, that's how the styles will merge.” -- Erik PaulsonMy guest on this episode is Erik Paulson who is an Encyclopedia of Martial Arts and the first American to win the World Light Heavyweight Shooto Championship in Japan. He was trained by legendary instructors like Guro Dan Inosanto, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Gene Lebell, Yori Nakamura, Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie, Tim Tackett, Ajarn Chai, and Billy Robinson. He is a multi-style Black Belt and master instructor of Jeet Kune Do, Kick Boxing, Savate, Shoot Fighting, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, and a 6'th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling and STX Kickboxing. He runs the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, where he has trained MMA Fighters like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Cub Swanson, Sean Sherk, James Wilks, and Brock Lesnar. This episode is all about connection and seeking the common thread in all martial arts. My key takeaway is that martial arts is a creative act. We must be humble and open so that we can learn and absorb from all sources. What we learn must be tested so that we know that we can make it work, and the only way to test it is to experiment with it. Martial Arts is a creative process, of transforming knowledge, wisdom, to understanding. Erik Paulson is a true genius of the game, his understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of martial arts sets him apart and allows him to mentor and guide his students toward excellence. This is a special episode, filled with insight and old-school stories of Jeet Kune Do and the development of MMA from someone who has first-hand knowledge and experience. Tune in for an unforgettable episode.

Chris Haueter, is an American martial arts athlete and coach. Chris is one of the BJJ Dirty Dozen (first 12 Non-Brazilian recipients of the BJJ black belt), he received his black belt from Rigan Machado in 1996, and is the first American black belt to compete in the Mundials De Jiu-Jitsu in Brazil, and the first American black belt to win a black belt match. Over the years Chris has won multiple Pan American, and superfight victories. He is also a highly respected JKD practitioner directly trained under Dan Inosanto. He has promoted more than 40 students to black belts and is best known for his innovative teaching style and conceptual coaching ability. He named new positions as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rapidly developed in the mid-1990s, coining the term "combat base" as it related to shooting platform. He spread BJJ to the UK and across the US in the late 1990s. https://mtntough.com/clearedhot https://allform.com/clearedhot https://grammarly.com/clearedhot https://betterhelp.com/clearedhot
After a short break (and an extended, three-week road trip across the USA), we return this week with Menamy Mitanes - Systema and BJJ Instructor at The Academy Beverly Hills and Systema Los Angeles. In this, Menamy's second appearance on the podcast, we delve beyond his personal story and get into the core training philosophies of the martial arts - about which Menamy is more than qualified to speak. With a pedigree that includes JKD and FMA (under Dan Inosanto), BJJ (under Rigan Machado), and Systema (under Martin Wheeler and Vladimir Vasiliev), Menamy is a truly prolific student and teacher of the martial arts. For context, this interview followed a weekend seminar Menamy taught in Greenville, South Carolina, attended by Glenn and several of the NC Systema Crew. Here, we get into:- core similarities (and differences) in approach: FMA, BJJ, and Systema - training for self defence versus training for competition- the dangers of "faith in tradition" and of "go hard or go home" approaches- why high-level external skill must (and can only) emerge from internal understanding Find out more about training with Menamy at www.systemalosangeles.com and www.theacademybeverlyhills.com, and follow Menamy on Facebook at www.facebook.com/SystemaLA Mentioned in this episode:Interview with George Saint-Pierre on the Lex Fridman podcast4-day East Coast Masterclass NC, with Martin Wheeler (Oct 21-24, 2021)
