“Spiritual Growth is not necessarily found on a yoga mat, in the dojo, or in a meditation room, it's found in the space between your thoughts, it's found in the space between your decisions, it's found in the still point in the transition between stimulus and response. If I can pause and master those transitions and come to center in those moments and choose something other than what I would have done, that is functional spirituality and growth in all aspects of my life. Now I become player number one, changing the code, changing the game, changing the trajectory, because I am consciously aware of what I used to do, and I am consciously aware of what's happening, and I take a moment to pause, and I choose something different. And that's where that growth starts to happen.”—Harinder SinghThe Fantastic Budo Brothers have stepped in this week to interview me for this episode. For those of you who don't know I will share a little of my background. I am a Martial Artist, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Speaker, Author and High-Performance Coach. I teach elite audiences and organizations "How to Master Their Center and Flow in Chaos”. I specialize in training the trainers and have had the distinct honor of working with Black Belt School Owners, Military, Special Forces, Secret Service, and SWAT Teams. I have shared my programs with over 150 Law Enforcement Agencies, Silicon Valley Business Leaders, and Professional Athletes across the globe. As a profession I teach Jeet Kune Do, Tai Chi, Qi Gong, Wing Chun, and the Filipino Martial Arts. I love Boxing, Wrestling and Savate and hold a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. I am currently a Doctoral Candidate of Chinese Energetic Medicine and was honored to be inducted into the Martial Arts Masters Hall of Fame in 2019.This episode is all about developing accurate perceptive awareness and fostering effective interactions. My key takeaway is that martial arts teaches us so much more than punching, kicking, stabbing, and choking. It teaches us essential skills of how to relax under pressure, slow down our perception of time, expand our awareness, read our opponents, and make conscious choices in chaos. There is no experience that can be disassociated from your relationship to your center. The ability to find your center, move from your center, keep your center under pressure, and recover your center after being knocked off is the key to personal and professional performance. We dive deep into discovering how to know yourself and others, how to cultivate stillness in chaos, and the art of honestly express yourself. We also define mastery, not as a destination but rather as the continuous change and transformation of the being. I truly believe that martial arts are the greatest vehicle to develop our human potential, discover the cause of our ignorance, and unleash our superpowers of creativity, connectivity, and adaptability. A big shout out to the Budo brothers for stepping in as guest interviewers and to all of you my listeners thank you for joining me on this journey.

“It doesn't matter where it comes from as long as it works, and you don't know if it works unless you experiment with it. In order to get good at everything you got to break it all up and pull it apart. Find the common thread, that's how the styles will merge.” -- Erik PaulsonMy guest on this episode is Erik Paulson who is an Encyclopedia of Martial Arts and the first American to win the World Light Heavyweight Shooto Championship in Japan. He was trained by legendary instructors like Guro Dan Inosanto, Benny “The Jet” Urquidez, Gene Lebell, Yori Nakamura, Rigan Machado, Rickson Gracie, Tim Tackett, Ajarn Chai, and Billy Robinson. He is a multi-style Black Belt and master instructor of Jeet Kune Do, Kick Boxing, Savate, Shoot Fighting, Filipino Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Wrestling, Catch Wrestling, and a 6'th degree Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He is the founder of Combat Submission Wrestling and STX Kickboxing. He runs the CSW Training Center in Fullerton, California, where he has trained MMA Fighters like Josh Barnett, Ken Shamrock, Cub Swanson, Sean Sherk, James Wilks, and Brock Lesnar. This episode is all about connection and seeking the common thread in all martial arts. My key takeaway is that martial arts is a creative act. We must be humble and open so that we can learn and absorb from all sources. What we learn must be tested so that we know that we can make it work, and the only way to test it is to experiment with it. Martial Arts is a creative process, of transforming knowledge, wisdom, to understanding. Erik Paulson is a true genius of the game, his understanding of the physical, mental, and spiritual aspects of martial arts sets him apart and allows him to mentor and guide his students toward excellence. This is a special episode, filled with insight and old-school stories of Jeet Kune Do and the development of MMA from someone who has first-hand knowledge and experience. Tune in for an unforgettable episode.

“People get hung up on the ranking as opposed to the teaching methodology. Upgrade your teaching methodology instead of getting more techniques. Instead of collecting new techniques connect the basic techniques so that you can make them look advanced.” -Apolo LadraMy guest this episode is Tuhon Apolo Ladra who has trained in the martial arts for over 40 years. He is a 7'th degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do, he has taught thousands of students and managed 57 schools. He is a master instructor of Pekti Tirsia Kali under Grand Tuhon Leo Gaje, and has been inducted int the Black Belt Magazine's Hall of Fame as “Weapons Instructor of the Year”. Tuhon Apolo is the founder of the iKali and the World Kali Association which is dedicated creating and standardizing curriculum and requirements for students, instructors and school owners while spreading the indigenous art of the Philippines, the Art of the Blade, worldwide. This episode is filled with insight. We discuss teaching and training methods that are designed to develop students and instructors and uplift the arts. We talk about Tuhon Apolo's traditional Tae Kwon Do roots and how he transitioned into building one of the largest Kali organizations in the world. My key takeaway is that continuing education on training methods is what will uplift the arts. Instead of chasing rankings and techniques, time and effort must be spent on developing your teaching ability so that you can create future high quality instructors. We also discuss the advantages of teaching by concepts and principles so that students can learn how to find their own unique expression of movement instead of trying to copy their instructors. Everyone has different attributes and limitations, empowerment lies and finding who you are and how you express yourself. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too.
“Fighting is a chess game. If you don't get your opponent within 3 moves, you are dead already.” —Darren Tibon My guest this episode is Grand Master Darren Tibon who was a personal student and graduate of Great Grand Master Angel Cabales' Serrada Escrima. Angel Cabales was known as the teacher of teachers and in 1967 was one of the first to commercially teach Filipino Martial Arts and he heavily influenced their spread across the United States. I am honored to sit down with GM Darren Tibon who is one of my personal teachers, the head of Angel's Disciples Stockton, and the founder of the Legacy Events, which were designed to unite Filipino Martial Artists of all Styles and Systems and preserve the Teachings of their Grand Masters. In this episode we discuss the history of Serrada Escrima and how it was developed by Angel Cabales. We also discuss Darren Tibon's private training with Angel Cabales and how he carries on the legacy today. My key takeaway is that High Performance in any art is directly related to the training method. The ability to teach the knowledge you have is the most important thing. We dive deep into drilling, flowing, and fighting strategy. We discuss how to read and setup your opponent, how to close the distance, how to generate power and control, how to build reflexes and counter your opponent's counters. Afterall Fighting is a Chess Match, and everything is an illusion. I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and I hope you do too.

Lynda Hatch was born with a hearing impairment that was discovered around 6 months of age. So, don't be shocked when you hear a male voice on this podcast! Her husband, David Hatch, graciously translates throughout the interview. Lynda wanted to make sure that listeners knew she was the one answering the questions and her husband is translating so you will on occasion hear her respond verbally before David translates. Lynda and David met early in her training years and they have practiced and taught together ever since. They have resided in Michigan for many years. Why did Lynda begin martial arts as a young woman at a time when women students were few and far between, anyway? She wanted to learn how to protect herself and she also experienced some bullying as a young girl (not for being deaf but for her red hair and religion!) which prompted her to seek out martial arts. Lynda began martial arts in the late 1960's. She earned her 1st degree black belt in Karate in April, 1977. She was the only female in a male-dominated karate club. She shares insights on how she learned martial arts during these years without any verbal cues like counting or not being able to hear an opponent's breath or movement during sparring. In 1985, Lynda and David met Guru Dan Inosanto (Guru Dan Inosanto has over 40 years' experience in the martial arts and is a world authority in Jeet Kune Do and Filipino Martial Arts) at a seminar and their training with him continued though seminars and private trainings. Lynda says that she learned to be a good instructor from those who trained her. She has a huge list of accomplishments and gives credit to Guru Dan Inosanto and Sifu Francis Fong, as well as others, for her accomplishments. We all know, though, that dedicated and determined martial artists put in the hard work and effort, which is exactly what Lynda did with the extra challenge of not hearing. Lynda wrote a chapter for my book, The Martial Arts Woman, where she shares how she overcame adversity in her life. Today we learn what ignites her passion and commitment to martial arts and more importantly, why being hearing impaired is not a setback, but simply an alternate path for her. Lynda shares a favorite quote which encapsulates who she is as a martial art woman. She says, "If it's going to be, it's up to me." Enjoy! This is a step outside my usual conversation but in another of my personal interests -- the martial arts. I've studied Brazilian Juijitsu, Kiukishin Karate and I have recently started the Filipino Martial Arts and Silat. I love the martial Arts but I notice that there hasbeen some critique of the FMA system that I find unfair. Here's my 2 cents. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/trunews365/message
Show # 269- Coffee with Rich | Matt Numrich Certified Executive Instructor Progressive Fighting Systems On today's Coffee with Rich, we will be joined by Matt Numrich. Matthew Numrich is a natural leader and teacher. He graduated from Concordia University Chicago with a Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Psychology and a Master's Degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology. In the beginning, he began studying martial arts and training under Sifu Paul Vunak (under Guru Dan Inosanto) in Bruce Lees's art of Jeet Kune Do. He founded his own studio in the Chicago suburbs shortly after being certified as one of only a handful of Full Instructors of JKD and the Filipino Martial Arts. He also holds a Certified Executive Instructor position under Progressive Fighting Systems, which is the “crème de la crème” in functional Jeet Kune Do. Mr. Numrich has also had the pleasure of training with some of the other elite JKD instructors such as Sifu Larry Hartsell (original student of Bruce Lee) and Thomas Cruse (past instructor of the Navy Seals). Mr. Numrich has written a manuscript on Jeet Kune Do (JKD), in addition to several articles in US and international martial arts magazines. In 2001, he completed the first JKD on DVD instructional series, which is now distributed around the world. Mr. Numrich was used as a public media resource after the attacks of 9/11, in addition to running several out-of-state seminars. In late 2003, he was invited to teach instructors of the Federal Air Marshal's Chicago O'Hare office . He also completed the Jeet Kune Do Self Defense Matrix, which is the perfect “at home” training companion and a great supplementary program for students at all levels. National publications and experts alike have hailed this program as “unique and groundbreaking” as it not only focuses on the content of JKD (what is taught), but the method (how it is taught), resulting in an incredible training tool. For more information on this, please go to: www.FearlessStreetFighter.com Within the last several years, Mr. Numrich completed many new self-defense programs, which focus on “average and untrained civilians” – as he saw this is where the need truly exists. Since then Mr. Numrich has concentrated on the Israeli art of Krav Maga and is currently a Level 5 Certified Krav Maga Instructor. He believes that Krav Maga Training is the most effective and efficient way to meet the most amount of civilian need in the area of self-defense. Mr. Numrich still teaches at his new academy in Phoenix, AZ, when most owners hand the instruction over to the “best student” in the class. His passion is using martial arts to increase the quality of his student's lives. Whether he is teaching character values to children, intense street fighting drills to men, or confidence-building self-defense techniques to women – Mr. Numrich is living his mission. His school has a pool of students that consists of police officers, security guards, military, other martial arts instructors, men, women, and children of all ages. His close-knit group of students creates an atmosphere of faster, more effective learning for all. The school has specialty instructors for different groups of students, including law enforcement organizations, security companies, young adults, children with learning disabilities (ADD/ADHD), and family members seeking proactive home/environment safety. In addition to teaching weekly at his PhxKravFit Krav Maga school, Mr. Numrich has helped create, and now trains people all over the world in escape and evasion techniques, as the Head Trainer of the Spy Black Belt program (for Instructors) and Spy Defense and Survival (for civilians, law enforcement and military). Matt currently lives in Phoenix with his wife Stephanie who heads up the Krav Maga Self Defense Training and Classes for Youth and their two sons and dogs. This episode we welcome back Cecil Burch of Immediate Action Combatives for a third time! Cecil holds the record for most appearances and said on the air that he would have to ensure that no one took his lead....hehe! - We do an After Action Review of the Immediate Action Jiu-Jitsu and Pugilism seminar we hosted in Tulsa OK 16-18 July 2021. The course was very transformative for all the students, frankly it had some of the same impactful learning experiences as Shivworks ECQC. Eric and Aaron speak on some hard learned lessons they experienced during the weekend, lessons that audience members may learn from as well. Also a very important discussion was on the value of simulation and force on force training with simple blue guns. We all loose sight of the fact that we do not have to use simunitions or UTM all the time to get value. Blue gun work has 80-90 percent of the value and is way easier and cheeper to implement. Per the discussion on the show please pick up the book Safe Force on Force Firearms Simulations By Ralf Mroz Cecil Burch is a like long martial artist training in a multitude of systems for over 40 years. This show with Roy Harris skips most of his (DEEP!) martial arts history and jumps into two things he's passionate about and equally stoked on: Teaching and Human Movement. Roy has the kind of resume you might build if you were writing a character for Hollywood that needed to be able to fight anybody, anywhere, with anything, but never needed to. He's known for his Jiu Jitsu courses, so we jump way into how he came up with his teaching style, what he thinks is important with teachers and students, and (of course) we can't avoid his love for Filipino Martial Arts. If you're looking to up your teaching game, or if you just want to hear about one more path to excellence, this show'll get you a little further down that road. Enjoy! NFH
